Remarks on the bondage number of planar graphs   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The bondage number b(G) of a nonempty graph G is the cardinality of a smallest set of edges whose removal from G results in a graph with domination number greater than the domination number γ(G) of G. In 1998, J.E. Dunbar, T.W. Haynes, U. Teschner, and L. Volkmann posed the conjecture b(G)Δ(G)+1 for every nontrivial connected planar graph G. Two years later, L. Kang and J. Yuan proved b(G)8 for every connected planar graph G, and therefore, they confirmed the conjecture for Δ(G)7. In this paper we show that this conjecture is valid for all connected planar graphs of girth g(G)4 and maximum degree Δ(G)5 as well as for all not 3-regular graphs of girth g(G)5. Some further related results and open problems are also presented.  相似文献

For any natural number k, a graph G is said to be pancyclic mod k if it contains a cycle of every length modulo k. In this paper, we show that every K1,4-free graph G with minimum degree δ(G)k+3 is pancyclic mod k and every claw-free graph G with δ(G)k+1 is pancyclic mod k, which confirms Thomassen's conjecture (J. Graph Theory 7 (1983) 261–271) for claw-free graphs.  相似文献

A minimum clique-transversal set MCT(G) of a graph G=(V,E) is a set SV of minimum cardinality that meets all maximal cliques in G. A maximum clique-independent set MCI(G) of G is a set of maximum number of pairwise vertex-disjoint maximal cliques. We prove that the problem of finding an MCT(G) and an MCI(G) is NP-hard for cocomparability, planar, line and total graphs. As an interesting corollary we obtain that the problem of finding a minimum number of elements of a poset to meet all maximal antichains of the poset remains NP-hard even if the poset has height two, thereby generalizing a result of Duffas et al. (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 58 (1991) 158–164). We present a polynomial algorithm for the above problems on Helly circular-arc graphs which is the first such algorithm for a class of graphs that is not clique-perfect. We also present polynomial algorithms for the weighted version of the clique-transversal problem on strongly chordal graphs, chordal graphs of bounded clique size, and cographs. The algorithms presented run in linear time for strongly chordal graphs and cographs. These mark the first attempts at the weighted version of the problem.  相似文献

Let G be a connected graph with v(G) 2 vertices and independence number (G). G is critical if for any edge e of G:

1. (i) (Ge) > (G), if e is not a cut edge of G, and

2. (ii) v(Gi) − (Gi) < v(G) − (G), I = 1, 2, if e is a cut edge and G1, G2 are the two components of Ge.

Recently, Katchalski et al. (1995) conjectured that: if G is a connected critical graph, then with equality possible if and only if G is a tree. In this paper we establish this conjecture.  相似文献

The cell rotation graph D(G) on the strongly connected orientations of a 2-edge-connected plane graph G is defined. It is shown that D(G) is a directed forest and every component is an in-tree with one root; if T is a component of D(G), the reversions of all orientations in T induce a component of D(G), denoted by T, thus (T,T) is called a pair of in-trees of D(G); G is Eulerian if and only if D(G) has an odd number of components (all Eulerian orientations of G induce the same component of D(G)); the width and height of T are equal to that of T, respectively. Further it is shown that the pair of directed tree structures on the perfect matchings of a plane elementary bipartite graph G coincide with a pair of in-trees of D(G). Accordingly, such a pair of in-trees on the perfect matchings of any plane bipartite graph have the same width and height.  相似文献

An L(2,1)-coloring of a graph G is a coloring of G's vertices with integers in {0,1,…,k} so that adjacent vertices’ colors differ by at least two and colors of distance-two vertices differ. We refer to an L(2,1)-coloring as a coloring. The span λ(G) of G is the smallest k for which G has a coloring, a span coloring is a coloring whose greatest color is λ(G), and the hole index ρ(G) of G is the minimum number of colors in {0,1,…,λ(G)} not used in a span coloring. We say that G is full-colorable if ρ(G)=0. More generally, a coloring of G is a no-hole coloring if it uses all colors between 0 and its maximum color. Both colorings and no-hole colorings were motivated by channel assignment problems. We define the no-hole span μ(G) of G as ∞ if G has no no-hole coloring; otherwise μ(G) is the minimum k for which G has a no-hole coloring using colors in {0,1,…,k}.

Let n denote the number of vertices of G, and let Δ be the maximum degree of vertices of G. Prior work shows that all non-star trees with Δ3 are full-colorable, all graphs G with n=λ(G)+1 are full-colorable, μ(G)λ(G)+ρ(G) if G is not full-colorable and nλ(G)+2, and G has a no-hole coloring if and only if nλ(G)+1. We prove two extremal results for colorings. First, for every m1 there is a G with ρ(G)=m and μ(G)=λ(G)+m. Second, for every m2 there is a connected G with λ(G)=2m, n=λ(G)+2 and ρ(G)=m.  相似文献

For an integer l0, define to be the family of graphs such that if and only if for any edge subset XE(G) with |X|l, G has a spanning eulerian subgraph H with XE(H). The graphs in are known as supereulerian graphs. Let f(l) be the minimum value of k such that every k-edge-connected graph is in . Jaeger and Catlin independently proved f(0)=4. We shall determine f(l) for all values of l0. Another problem concerning the existence of eulerian subgraphs containing given edges is also discussed, and former results in [J. Graph Theory 1 (1977) 79–84] and [J. Graph Theory 3 (1979) 91–93] are extended.  相似文献

Let the coboxicity of a graph G be denoted by cob(G), and the threshold dimension by t(G). For fixed k≥3, determining if cob(G)≥k and t(G)≤k are both NP-complete problems. We show that if G is a comparability graph, then we can determine if cob(G)≤2 in polynomial time. This result shows that it is possible to determine if the interval dimension of a poset equals 2 in polynomial time. If the clique covering number of G is 2, we show that one can determine if t(G)≤2 in polynomial time. Sufficient conditions on G are given for cob(G)≤2 and for t(G)≤2.  相似文献

An edge uv of a graph G is called a wing if there exists a chordless path with vertices u, v, x, y and edges uv, vx, xy. The wing-graph W(G) of a graph G is a graph having the same vertex set as G; uv is an edge in W(G) if and only if uv is a wing in G. A graph G is saturated if G is isomorphic to W(G). A star-cutset in a graph G is a non-empty set of vertices such that GC is disconnected and some vertex in C is adjacent to all the remaining vertices in C. V. Chvátal proposed to call a graph unbreakable if neither G nor its complement contain a star-cutset. We establish several properties of unbreakable graphs using the notions of wings and saturation. In particular, we obtain seven equivalent versions of the Strong Perfect Graph Conjecture.

Let σ={σi|i∈I} be some partition of the set of all primes P, G a finite group and σ(G)={σi|σiπ(G)≠∅}. A set H of subgroups of G is said to be a complete Hall σ-set of G if every member≠1 of H is a Hall σi-subgroup of G for some σiσ and H contains exactly one Hall σi-subgroup of G for every σiσ(G). A subgroup H of G is said to be:σ-semipermutable in G with respect to H if HHix=HixH for all xG and all HiH such that (|H|,|Hi|)=1; σ-semipermutable in G if H is σ-semipermutable in G with respect to some complete Hall σ-set of G. We study the structure of G being based on the assumption that some subgroups of G are σ-semipermutable in G.  相似文献

A total cover of a graph G is a subset of V(G)E(G) which covers all elements of V(G)E(G). The total covering number 2(G) of a graph G is the minimum cardinality of a total cover in G. In [1], it is proven that 2(G)[n/2] for a connected graph G of order n. Here we consider the extremal case and give some properties of connected graphs which have a total covering number [n/2]. We prove that such a graph with even order has a 1-factor and such a graph with odd order is factor-critical.  相似文献

The metric dimension dim(G)of a graph G is the minimum number of vertices such that every vertex of G is uniquely determined by its vector of distances to the chosen vertices. The zero forcing number Z(G)of a graph G is the minimum cardinality of a set S of black vertices(whereas vertices in V(G)\S are colored white)such that V(G)is turned black after finitely many applications of"the color-change rule":a white vertex is converted black if it is the only white neighbor of a black vertex. We show that dim(T)≤Z(T)for a tree T,and that dim(G)≤Z(G)+1 if G is a unicyclic graph;along the way,we characterize trees T attaining dim(T)=Z(T).For a general graph G,we introduce the"cycle rank conjecture".We conclude with a proof of dim(T)-2≤dim(T+e)≤dim(T)+1 for e∈E(T).  相似文献

A graph G is said to be n-factor-critical if GS has a 1-factor for any SV(G) with |S|=n. In this paper, we prove that if G is a 2-connected n-factor-critical graph of order p with , then G is hamiltonian with some exceptions. To extend this theorem, we define a (k,n)-factor-critical graph to be a graph G such that GS has a k-factor for any SV(G) with |S|=n. We conjecture that if G is a 2-connected (k,n)-factor-critical graph of order p with , then G is hamiltonian with some exceptions. In this paper, we characterize all such graphs that satisfy the assumption, but are not 1-tough. Using this, we verify the conjecture for k2.  相似文献

E.H. Spanier (1992) has constructed, for a cohomology theory defined on a triangulated space and locally constant on each open simplex, a spectral sequence whose E2-term consists of certain simplicial cohomology groups, converging to the cohomology of the space. In this paper we study a closed G-fibration ƒ: YX, where G is a finite group. We show that if the base-G-spaceX is equivariantly triangulated and Y is paracompact, then Spanier's spectral sequence yields an equivariant Serre spectral sequence for ƒ. The main point here is to identify the equivariant singular cohomology groups of X with appropriate simplicial cohomology groups of the orbit space X/G.

Given a graph G and a positive integer k, denote by G[k] the graph obtained from G by replacing each vertex of G with an independent set of size k. A graph G is called pseudo-k Hamiltonian-connected if G[k] is Hamiltonian-connected, i.e., every two distinct vertices of G[k] are connected by a Hamiltonian path. A graph G is called pseudo Hamiltonian-connected if it is pseudo-k Hamiltonian-connected for some positive integer k. This paper proves that a graph G is pseudo-Hamiltonian-connected if and only if for every non-empty proper subset X of V(G), |N(X)|>|X|. The proof of the characterization also provides a polynomial-time algorithm that decides whether or not a given graph is pseudo-Hamiltonian-connected. The characterization of pseudo-Hamiltonian-connected graphs also answers a question of Richard Nowakowski, which motivated this paper.  相似文献

Subgraph distances in graphs defined by edge transfers   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
For two edge-induced subgraphs F and H of the same size in a graph G, the subgraph H can be obtained from F by an edge jump if there exist four distinct vertices u, v, w, and x in G such that uv ε E(F), wx ε E(G) - E(F), and H = F - uv + wx. The subgraph F is j-transformed into H if H can be obtained from F by a sequence of edge jumps. Necessary and sufficient conditions are presented for a graph G to have the property that every edge-induced subgraph of a fixed size in G can be j-transformed into every other edge-induced subgraph of that size. The minimum number of edge jumps required to transform one subgraph into another is called the jump distance. This distance is a metric and can be modeled by a graph. The jump graph J(G) of a graph G is defined as that graph whose vertices are the edges of G and where two vertices of J(G) are adjacent if and only if the corresponding edges of G are independent. For a given graph G, we consider the sequence {{Jk(G)}} of iterated jump graphs and classify each graph as having a convergent, divergent, or terminating sequence.  相似文献

Let G be a graph with a nonempty edge set, and with rank rk(G), term rank Rk(G), and chromatic number χ(G). We characterize Rk(G) as being the maximum number of colors in certain proper colorings of G. In particular, we observe that χ(G)Rk(G), with equality holding if and only if (besides isolated vertices) G is either complete or a star. For a twin-free graph G, we observe the bound and we show that this bound is sharp.  相似文献

Let G be a graph with vertex set V (G), edge set E(G) and maximum degree Δ respectively. G is called degree-magic if it admits a labelling of the edges by integers {1, 2, …,|E(G)|} such that for any vertex v the sum of the labels of the edges incident with v is equal to (1+|E(G)|)/2·d(v), where d(v) is the degree of v. Let f be a proper edge coloring of G such that for each vertex vV (G),|{e:eEv, f(e) ≤ Δ/2}|=|{e:eEv, f(e) > Δ/2}|, and such an f is called a balanced edge coloring of G. In this paper, we show that if G is a supermagic even graph with a balanced edge coloring and m ≥ 1, then (2m + 1)G is a supermagic graph. If G is a d-magic even graph with a balanced edge coloring and n ≥ 2, then nG is a d-magic graph. Results in this paper generalise some known results.  相似文献
