In this paper, we present a new clustering method that involves data envelopment analysis (DEA). The proposed DEA-based clustering approach employs the piecewise production functions derived from the DEA method to cluster the data with input and output items. Thus, each evaluated decision-making unit (DMU) not only knows the cluster that it belongs to, but also checks the production function type that it confronts. It is important for managerial decision-making where decision-makers are interested in knowing the changes required in combining input resources so it can be classified into a desired cluster/class. In particular, we examine the fundamental CCR model to set up the DEA clustering approach. While this approach has been carried for the CCR model, the proposed approach can be easily extended to other DEA models without loss of generality. Two examples are given to explain the use and effectiveness of the proposed DEA-based clustering method.  相似文献

In this paper, we use data envelopment analysis (DEA) to estimate how well regions in Serbia utilize their resources. Based on data for four inputs and four outputs we applied an output-oriented CCR DEA model and it appears that 17 out of 30 regions are efficient. For each inefficient unit, DEA identifies the sources and level of inefficiency for each input and output. An output-oriented set of targets is determined for 13 inefficient regions. In addition, the possibilities of combining DEA and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) in evaluating performance are explored. The efficient regions are ranked using a cross efficiency matrix and an output-oriented version of Andersen–Petersen’s DEA model and the results are analyzed and compared.  相似文献

This study discusses nine desirable properties that a measure of technical efficiency (TE) needs to satisfy from the perspective of production economics and optimization. Seven data envelopment analysis (DEA) models are theoretically compared from a viewpoint of nine TE criteria. All the seven DEA models suffer from a problem of multiple projections even though a unique projection for efficiency comparison is one of the nine desirable properties. Furthermore, all the DEA models violate the property on aggregation of inputs and outputs. Thus, the seven DEA models do not satisfy all desirable TE properties. In addition, the comparison provides us with the following guidelines: (a) The additive model violates all desirable TE properties. (b) Russell measure and SBM (=ERGM) perform as well as RAM as a non-radial measure. If we are interested in strict monotonicity, the two models outperform the other DEA models including RAM. In contrast, if we are interested in translation invariance, RAM is better than Russell measure and SBM (=ERGM). (c) The radial measures (CCR and BCC) have the property of linear homogeneity. (d) The CCR model is useful for measuring a frontier shift among different periods. (e) If a data set contains a negative value, RAM becomes a DEA model to handle the negative value because it has the property of translation invariance. After examining the desirable TE properties, this study proposes a new approach to deal with an occurrence of multiple projections. The proposed approach includes a test to examine an occurrence of multiple projections, a mathematical expression of a projection set, and a selection process of a unique reference set as the largest one covering all the possible reference sets.  相似文献

An underlying assumption in DEA is that the weights coupled with the ratio scales of the inputs and outputs imply linear value functions. In this paper, we present a general modeling approach to deal with outputs and/or inputs that are characterized by nonlinear value functions. To this end, we represent the nonlinear virtual outputs and/or inputs in a piece-wise linear fashion. We give the CCR model that can assess the efficiency of the units in the presence of nonlinear virtual inputs and outputs. Further, we extend the models with the assurance region approach to deal with concave output and convex input value functions. Actually, our formulations indicate a transformation of the original data set to an augmented data set where standard DEA models can then be applied, remaining thus in the grounds of the standard DEA methodology. To underline the usefulness of such a new development, we revisit a previous work of one of the authors dealing with the assessment of the human development index on the light of DEA.  相似文献

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a non-parametric approach based on linear programming that has been widely applied for evaluating the relative efficiency of a set of homogeneous decision-making units (DMUs) with multiple inputs and outputs. The original DEA models use positive input and output variables that are measured on a ratio scale, but these models do not apply to the variables in which negative data can appear. However, with the widespread use of interval scale data and undesirable data, the emphasis has been directed towards the simultaneous consideration of the positive and negative data in DEA models. In this paper, using the slacks-based measure, we propose an extended model to evaluate the efficiency of DMUs, even if some variables are measured on an interval scale and some on a ratio scale. Moreover, the extended model allows for the presence of all interval-scale variables, which are capable of taking both negative and positive values.  相似文献

Returns to scale in multiplicative models in data envelopment analysis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
One class of models introduced in DEA is called multiplicative models, in which, as shown by Banker and Maindiratta (Manag. Sci. 32:126–135, 1986), the piecewise linear frontiers usually employed in DEA are replaced by a frontier that is piecewise Cobb-Douglas(=log  linear). Banker and Maindiratta (Manag. Sci. 32:126–135, 1986) introduced a model to identify the most productive scale size pattern, and Banker et al. (Eur. J. Oper. Res. 154:345–362, 2004) presented a two-stage method for the identification of returns to scale (RTS) in multiplicative models. In this paper it is shown that both the RTS situation and the MPSS pattern could be determined by a single model in one step. The new method is important in the computational point of view.  相似文献

Applications of traditional data envelopments analysis (DEA) models require knowledge of crisp input and output data. However, the real-world problems often deal with imprecise or ambiguous data. In this paper, the problem of considering uncertainty in the equality constraints is analyzed and by using the equivalent form of CCR model, a suitable robust DEA model is derived in order to analyze the efficiency of decision-making units (DMUs) under the assumption of uncertainty in both input and output spaces. The new model based on the robust optimization approach is suggested. Using the proposed model, it is possible to evaluate the efficiency of the DMUs in the presence of uncertainty in a fewer steps compared to other models. In addition, using the new proposed robust DEA model and envelopment form of CCR model, two linear robust super-efficiency models for complete ranking of DMUs are proposed. Two different case studies of different contexts are taken as numerical examples in order to compare the proposed model with other approaches. The examples also illustrate various possible applications of new models.  相似文献

The determination of a single efficient decision making unit (DMU) as the most efficient unit has been attracted by decision makers in some situations. Some integrated mixed integer linear programming (MILP) and mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) data envelopment analysis (DEA) models have been proposed to find a single efficient unit by the optimal common set of weights. In conventional DEA models, the non-Archimedean infinitesimal epsilon, which forestalls weights from being zero, is useless if one utilizes the well-known two-phase method. Nevertheless, this approach is inapplicable to integrated DEA models. Unfortunately, in some proposed integrated DEA models, the epsilon is neither considered nor determined. More importantly, based on this lack some approaches have been developed which will raise this drawback. In this paper, first of all some drawbacks of these models are discussed. Indeed, it is shown that, if the non-Archimedean epsilon is ignored, then these models can neither find the most efficient unit nor rank the extreme efficient units. Next, we formulate some new models to capture these drawbacks and hence attain assurance regions. Finally, a real data set of 53 professional tennis players is applied to illustrate the applicability of the suggested models.  相似文献

The Charnes, Cooper and Rhodes (CCR) DEA model and its linear forms maximise the efficiency of the assessed decision making unit (DMU) and, at the same time, the ratio of this efficiency to the maximum efficiency taken across all the DMUs, the latter naturally always being equal to one. It has been shown recently that, in the presence of absolute weight bounds, these models may not maximise the ratio of these efficiencies, a fact that may cause problems with the interpretation and use of the optimal primal and dual solutions. For example, an inefficient DMU may have greater efficiency than its target unit for some weights. This paper investigates the problem in greater detail; it shows that, in the linear DEA model maximising the total virtual output of the assessed DMU, the problem occurs only if upper bounds are imposed on the output weights. A similar result is established for the model that minimises the total virtual input.  相似文献

Robustness of the efficient DMUs in data envelopment analysis   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
By means of modified versions of CCR model based on evaluation of a decision making unit (DMU) relative to a reference set grouped by all other DMUs, sensitivity analysis of the CCR model in data envelopment analysis (DEA) is studied in this paper. The methods for sensitivity analysis are linear programming problems whose optimal values yield particular regions of stability. Sufficient and necessary conditions for upward variations of inputs and for downward variations of outputs of an (extremely) efficient DMU which remains efficient are provided. The approach does not require calculation of the basic solutions and of the inverse of the corresponding optimal basis matrix. The approach is illustrated by two numerical examples.  相似文献

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a method to estimate the relative efficiency of decision-making units (DMUs) performing similar tasks in a production system that consumes multiple inputs to produce multiple outputs. So far, a number of DEA models with interval data have been developed. The CCR model with interval data, the BCC model with interval data and the FDH model with interval data are well known as basic DEA models with interval data. In this study, we suggest a model with interval data called interval generalized DEA (IGDEA) model, which can treat the stated basic DEA models with interval data in a unified way. In addition, by establishing the theoretical properties of the relationships among the IGDEA model and those DEA models with interval data, we prove that the IGDEA model makes it possible to calculate the efficiency of DMUs incorporating various preference structures of decision makers.  相似文献

In data envelopment analysis (DEA) efficient decision making units (DMUs) are of primary importance as they define the efficient frontier. The current paper develops a new sensitivity analysis approach for the basic DEA models, such as, those proposed by Charnes, Cooper and Rhodes (CCR), Banker, Charnes and Cooper (BCC) and additive models, when variations in the data are simultaneously considered for all DMUs. By means of modified DEA models, in which the specific DMU under examination is excluded from the reference set, we are able to determine what perturbations of the data can be tolerated before efficient DMUs become inefficient. Our approach generalises the usual sensitivity analysis approach developed in which perturbations of the data are only applied to the test DMU while all the remaining DMUs remain fixed. In our framework data are allowed to vary simultaneously for all DMUs across different subsets of inputs and outputs. We study the relations of the infeasibility of modified DEA models employed and the robustness of DEA models. It is revealed that the infeasibility means stability. The empirical applications demonstrate that DEA efficiency classifications are robust with respect to possible data errors, particularly in the convex DEA case.  相似文献

In many applications of widely recognized technique, DEA, finding the most efficient DMU is desirable for decision maker. Using basic DEA models, decision maker is not able to identify most efficient DMU. Amin and Toloo [Gholam R. Amin, M. Toloo, Finding the most efficient DMUs in DEA: an improved integrated model. Comput. Ind. Eng. 52 (2007) 71–77] introduced an integrated DEA model for finding most CCR-efficient DMU. In this paper, we propose a new integrated model for determining most BCC-efficient DMU by solving only one linear programming (LP). This model is useful for situations in which return to scale is variable, so has wider range of application than other models which find most CCR-efficient DMU. The applicability of the proposed integrated model is illustrated, using a real data set of a case study, which consists of 19 facility layout alternatives.  相似文献

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) and multiple objective linear programming (MOLP) can be used as tools in management control and planning. The existing models have been established during the investigation of the relations between the output-oriented dual DEA model and the minimax reference point formulations, namely the super-ideal point model, the ideal point model and the shortest distance model. Through these models, the decision makers’ preferences are considered by interactive trade-off analysis procedures in multiple objective linear programming. These models only consider the output-oriented dual DEA model, which is a radial model that focuses more on output increase. In this paper, we improve those models to obtain models that address both inputs and outputs. Our main aim is to decrease total input consumption and increase total output production which results in solving one mathematical programming model instead of n models. Numerical illustration is provided to show some advantages of our method over the previous methods.  相似文献

Network data envelopment analysis (DEA) models the internal structures of decision-making units (DMUs). Unlike the standard DEA model, multiplier-based network DEA models are often highly non-linear and cannot be converted into linear programs. As such, obtaining a non-linear network DEA's global optimal solution is a challenge because it corresponds to a nonconvex optimization problem. In this paper, we introduce a conic relaxation model that searches for the global optimum to the general multiplier-based network DEA model. We reformulate the general network DEA models and relax the new models into second order cone programming (SOCP) problems. In comparison with linear relaxation models, which is potentially applicable to general network DEA structures, the conic relaxation model guarantees applicability in general network DEA, since McCormick envelopes involved are ensured to be finite. Furthermore, the conic relaxation model avoids unnecessary linear relaxations of some nonlinear constraints. It generates, in a more convenient manner, feasible approximations and tighter upper bounds on the global optimal overall efficiency. Compared with a line-parameter search method that has been applied to solve non-linear network DEA models, the conic relaxation model keeps track of the distances between the optimal overall efficiency and its approximations. As a result, it is able to determine whether a qualified approximation has been achieved or not, with the help of a branch and bound algorithm. Hence, our proposed approach can substantially reduce the computations involved.  相似文献

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) has been proven as an excellent data-oriented performance evaluation method when multiple inputs and outputs are present in a set of peer decision-making units (DMUs). Several efficiency measures have been proposed in the DEA literature, see, for instances, radial efficiency measure of Charnes et al. (CCR)(A. Charnes. W.W. Cooper, and E. Rhodes, 1978. Measuring the efficiency of decision making units. Eur. J. Oper. Res. 2, 429–444), Russell graph measure (J.T. Russell, and R. Sirvant. 1999. An enhanced DEA Russell graph efficiency measure. Eur. J. Oper. Res. 115, pp. 596–607) and slack-based measure of Tone (K. Tone, 2001. A slack-based measure of efficiency in DEA. Eur. J. Oper. Res. 130, p. 498–509). In this article, we will propose an Euclidean distance-based measure of efficiency. Then, in order to discriminate the performance of efficient DMUs, an alternative super-efficiency DEA model is proposed. The applicability of the models developed is illustrated in the context of the analysis of gas companies performance.  相似文献

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is one of often used modeling tools for efficiency and performance evaluation of decision making units. Ratio DEA (DEA-R) is a group of novel mathematical models that combines standard DEA methodology and ratio analysis. The efficiency score given by standard DEA CCR model is less than or equal to that given by DEA-R model. In case of single input or single output the efficiency scores in CCR and DEA-R models are identical. The paper deals with DEA-R models without explicit inputs, i.e. models where only pure outputs or index data are taken into account. A basic DEA-R model without explicit inputs is formulated and a relation between output-oriented DEA models without explicit inputs and output-oriented DEA-R models is analyzed. Central resource allocation and slack-based measure models within DEA-R framework are examined. Finally they are used for projections of decision making units on the efficient frontier. The results of the proposed models are applied for efficiency evaluation of 15 units (Chinese research institutes) and they are discussed.  相似文献

It has recently been demonstrated that incorporating weight bounds and other non-homogeneous restrictions in DEA models may lead to underestimation of the maximum relative efficiency of decision making units. This paper suggests a way of avoiding this by replacing the objective function in DEA models by the relative efficiency of the assessed unit and converting the resulting models to linear forms. An alternative approach based on incorporating weight restrictions in the recently introduced maximin DEA model is also considered. It is shown that imposing weight bounds in the maximin model is equivalent to imposing bounds on ratios of individual weights.  相似文献

This paper is drawn from the use of data envelopment analysis (DEA) in helping a Portuguese bank to manage the performance of its branches. The bank wanted to set targets for the branches on such variables as growth in number of clients, growth in funds deposited and so on. Such variables can take positive and negative values but apart from some exceptions, traditional DEA models have hitherto been restricted to non-negative data. We report on the development of a model to handle unrestricted data in a DEA framework and illustrate the use of this model on data from the bank concerned.  相似文献
