This paper considers the problem of interval scale data in the most widely used models of data envelopment analysis (DEA), the CCR and BCC models. Radial models require inputs and outputs measured on the ratio scale. Our focus is on how to deal with interval scale variables especially when the interval scale variable is a difference of two ratio scale variables like profit or the decrease/increase in bank accounts. We suggest the use of these ratio scale variables in a radial DEA model.  相似文献

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a method to estimate the relative efficiency of decision-making units (DMUs) performing similar tasks in a production system that consumes multiple inputs to produce multiple outputs. So far, a number of DEA models with interval data have been developed. The CCR model with interval data, the BCC model with interval data and the FDH model with interval data are well known as basic DEA models with interval data. In this study, we suggest a model with interval data called interval generalized DEA (IGDEA) model, which can treat the stated basic DEA models with interval data in a unified way. In addition, by establishing the theoretical properties of the relationships among the IGDEA model and those DEA models with interval data, we prove that the IGDEA model makes it possible to calculate the efficiency of DMUs incorporating various preference structures of decision makers.  相似文献

This paper develops a new radial super-efficiency data envelopment analysis (DEA) model, which allows input–output variables to take both negative and positive values. Compared with existing DEA models capable of dealing with negative data, the proposed model can rank the efficient DMUs and is feasible no matter whether the input–output data are non-negative or not. It successfully addresses the infeasibility issue of both the conventional radial super-efficiency DEA model and the Nerlove–Luenberger super-efficiency DEA model under the assumption of variable returns to scale. Moreover, it can project each DMU onto the super-efficiency frontier along a suitable direction and never leads to worse target inputs or outputs than the original ones for inefficient DMUs. Additional advantages of the proposed model include monotonicity, units invariance and output translation invariance. Two numerical examples demonstrate the practicality and superiority of the new model.  相似文献

Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a very effective method to evaluate the relative efficiency of decision-making units (DMUs). Since the data of production processes cannot be precisely measured in some cases, the uncertain theory has played an important role in DEA. This paper attempts to extend the traditional DEA models to a fuzzy framework, thus producing a fuzzy DEA model based on credibility measure. Following is a method of ranking all the DMUs. In order to solve the fuzzy model, we have designed the hybrid algorithm combined with fuzzy simulation and genetic algorithm. When the inputs and outputs are all trapezoidal or triangular fuzzy variables, the model can be transformed to linear programming. Finally, a numerical example is presented to illustrate the fuzzy DEA model and the method of ranking all the DMUs.  相似文献

The objective of the present paper is to propose a novel pair of data envelopment analysis (DEA) models for measurement of relative efficiencies of decision-making units (DMUs) in the presence of non-discretionary factors and imprecise data. Compared to traditional DEA, the proposed interval DEA approach measures the efficiency of each DMU relative to the inefficiency frontier, also called the input frontier, and is called the worst relative efficiency or pessimistic efficiency. On the other hand, in traditional DEA, the efficiency of each DMU is measured relative to the efficiency frontier and is called the best relative efficiency or optimistic efficiency. The pair of proposed interval DEA models takes into account the crisp, ordinal, and interval data, as well as non-discretionary factors, simultaneously for measurement of relative efficiencies of DMUs. Two numeric examples will be provided to illustrate the applicability of the interval DEA models.  相似文献

Efficiency could be not only the ratio of weighted sum of outputs to that of inputs but also that of weighted sum of inputs to that of outputs. When the previous efficiency measures the best relative efficiency within the range of no more than one, the decision-making units (DMUs) who get the optimum value of one perform best among all the DMUs. If the previous efficiency is measured within the range of no less than one, the DMUs who get the optimum value of one perform worst among all the DMUs. When the later efficiency is measured within the range of no more than one, the DMUs who get the optimum value of one perform worst among all the DMUs. If the later efficiency is measured within the range of no less than one, the DMUs who get the optimum value of one perform best among all the DMUs. This paper mainly studies an interval DEA model with later efficiency, in which efficiency is measured within the range of an interval, whose upper bound is set to one and the lower bound is determined by introducing a virtual ideal DMU, whose performance is definitely superior to any DMUs. The efficiencies, obtained from interval DEA model, turn out to be all intervals and are referred to as interval efficiencies, which combine the best and the worst relative efficiency in a reasonable manner to give an overall assessment of performances for all DMUs. Assessor's preference information on input and output weights is also incorporated into interval DEA model reasonably and conveniently. Through an example, some differences are found from the ranking results obtained from interval DEA model and bounded DEA model using the Hurwicz criterion approach to rank the interval efficiencies.

The increasing intensity of global competition has led organizations to utilize various types of performance measurement tools for improving the quality of their products and services. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a methodology for evaluating and measuring the relative efficiencies of a set of decision making units (DMUs) that use multiple inputs to produce multiple outputs. All the data in the conventional DEA with input and/or output ratios assumes the form of crisp numbers. However, the observed values of data in real-world problems are sometimes expressed as interval ratios. In this paper, we propose two new models: general and multiplicative non-parametric ratio models for DEA problems with interval data. The contributions of this paper are fourfold: (1) we consider input and output data expressed as interval ratios in DEA; (2) we address the gap in DEA literature for problems not suitable or difficult to model with crisp values; (3) we propose two new DEA models for evaluating the relative efficiencies of DMUs with interval ratios, and (4) we present a case study involving 20 banks with three interval ratios to demonstrate the applicability and efficacy of the proposed models where the traditional indicators are mostly financial ratios.  相似文献

Conventional DEA models assume deterministic, precise and non-negative data for input and output observations. However, real applications may be characterized by observations that are given in form of intervals and include negative numbers. For instance, the consumption of electricity in decentralized energy resources may be either negative or positive, depending on the heat consumption. Likewise, the heat losses in distribution networks may be within a certain range, depending on e.g. external temperature and real-time outtake. Complementing earlier work separately addressing the two problems; interval data and negative data; we propose a comprehensive evaluation process for measuring the relative efficiencies of a set of DMUs in DEA. In our general formulation, the intervals may contain upper or lower bounds with different signs. The proposed method determines upper and lower bounds for the technical efficiency through the limits of the intervals after decomposition. Based on the interval scores, DMUs are then classified into three classes, namely, the strictly efficient, weakly efficient and inefficient. An intuitive ranking approach is presented for the respective classes. The approach is demonstrated through an application to the evaluation of bank branches.  相似文献

The conventional data envelopment analysis (DEA) measures the relative efficiencies of a set of decision making units (DMUs) with exact values of inputs and outputs. For imprecise data, i.e., mixtures of interval data and ordinal data, some methods have been developed to calculate the upper bound of the efficiency scores. This paper constructs a pair of two-level mathematical programming models, whose objective values represent the lower bound and upper bound of the efficiency scores, respectively. Based on the concept of productive efficiency and the application of a variable substitution technique, the pair of two-level nonlinear programs is transformed to a pair of ordinary one-level linear programs. Solving the associated pairs of linear programs produces the efficiency intervals of all DMUs. An illustrative example verifies the idea of this paper. A real case is also provided to give some interpretation of the interval efficiency. Interval efficiency not only describes the real situation in better detail; psychologically, it also eases the tension of the DMUs being evaluated as well as the persons conducting the evaluation.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate DEA with interval input-output data. First we show various extensions of efficiency and that 25 of them are essential. Second we formulate the efficiency test problems as mixed integer programming problems. We prove that 14 among 25 problems can be reduced to linear programming problems and that the other 11 efficiencies can be tested by solving a finite sequence of linear programming problems. Third, in order to obtain efficiency scores, we extend SBM model to interval input-output data. Fourth, to moderate a possible positive overassessment by DEA, we introduce the inverted DEA model with interval input-output data. Using efficiency and inefficiency scores, we propose a classification of DMUs. Finally, we apply the proposed approach to Japanese Bank Data and demonstrate its advantages.  相似文献

This paper is drawn from the use of data envelopment analysis (DEA) in helping a Portuguese bank to manage the performance of its branches. The bank wanted to set targets for the branches on such variables as growth in number of clients, growth in funds deposited and so on. Such variables can take positive and negative values but apart from some exceptions, traditional DEA models have hitherto been restricted to non-negative data. We report on the development of a model to handle unrestricted data in a DEA framework and illustrate the use of this model on data from the bank concerned.  相似文献

Input and output data, under uncertainty, must be taken into account as an essential part of data envelopment analysis (DEA) models in practice. Many researchers have dealt with this kind of problem using fuzzy approaches, DEA models with interval data or probabilistic models. This paper presents an approach to scenario-based robust optimization for conventional DEA models. To consider the uncertainty in DEA models, different scenarios are formulated with a specified probability for input and output data instead of using point estimates. The robust DEA model proposed is aimed at ranking decision-making units (DMUs) based on their sensitivity analysis within the given set of scenarios, considering both feasibility and optimality factors in the objective function. The model is based on the technique proposed by Mulvey et al. (1995) for solving stochastic optimization problems. The effect of DMUs on the product possibility set is calculated using the Monte Carlo method in order to extract weights for feasibility and optimality factors in the goal programming model. The approach proposed is illustrated and verified by a case study of an engineering company.  相似文献

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is popularly used to evaluate relative efficiency among public or private firms. Most DEA models are established by individually maximizing each firm's efficiency according to its advantageous expectation by a ratio. Some scholars have pointed out the interesting relationship between the multiobjective linear programming (MOLP) problem and the DEA problem. They also introduced the common weight approach to DEA based on MOLP. This paper proposes a new linear programming problem for computing the efficiency of a decision-making unit (DMU). The proposed model differs from traditional and existing multiobjective DEA models in that its objective function is the difference between inputs and outputs instead of the outputs/inputs ratio. Then an MOLP problem, based on the introduced linear programming problem, is formulated for the computation of common weights for all DMUs. To be precise, the modified Chebychev distance and the ideal point of MOLP are used to generate common weights. The dual problem of this model is also investigated. Finally, this study presents an actual case study analysing R&D efficiency of 10 TFT-LCD companies in Taiwan to illustrate this new approach. Our model demonstrates better performance than the traditional DEA model as well as some of the most important existing multiobjective DEA models.  相似文献

Inverse data envelopment analysis (InDEA) is a well-known approach for short-term forecasting of a given decision-making unit (DMU). The conventional InDEA models use the production possibility set (PPS) that is composed of an evaluated DMU with current inputs and outputs. In this paper, we replace the fluctuated DMU with a modified DMU involving renewal inputs and outputs in the PPS since the DMU with current data cannot be allowed to establish the new PPS. Besides, the classical DEA models such as InDEA are assumed to consider perfect knowledge of the input and output values but in numerous situations, this assumption may not be realistic. The observed values of the data in these situations can sometimes be defined as interval numbers instead of crisp numbers. Here, we extend the InDEA model to interval data for evaluating the relative efficiency of DMUs. The proposed models determine the lower and upper bounds of the inputs of a given DMU separately when its interval outputs are changed in the performance analysis process. We aim to remain the current interval efficiency of a considered DMU and the interval efficiencies of the remaining DMUs fixed or even improve compared with the current interval efficiencies.  相似文献

Conventional data envelopment analysis (DEA) assists decision makers in distinguishing between efficient and inefficient decision making units (DMUs) in a homogeneous group. Standard DEA models can not provide more information about efficient units. Super-efficiency DEA models can be used in ranking the performance of efficient DMUs and overcome this obstacle. Because of the possible infeasibility, the use of super efficiency models has been restricted. This research proposes a methodology to determine a distance-based measure of super-efficiency. The proposed methodology overcomes the infeasibility problem of the existing ranking methodologies. The applicability of the proposed model is illustrated in the context of the analysis of gas companies?? performance.  相似文献

While traditional data envelopment analysis (DEA) models assess the relative efficiency of similar, independent decision making units (DMUs) centralized DEA models aim at reallocating inputs and outputs among the units setting new input and output targets for each one. This system point of view is appropriate when the DMUs belong to a common organization that allocates their inputs and appropriates their outputs. This intraorganizational perspective opens up the possibility that greater technical efficiency for the organization as a whole might be achieved by closing down some of the existing DMUs. In this paper, we present three centralized DEA models that take advantage of this possibility. Although these models involve some binary variables, we present efficient solution approaches based on Linear Programming. We also present some numerical results of the proposed models for a small problem from the literature.  相似文献

Cross-efficiency evaluation in data envelopment analysis (DEA) has been developed under the assumption of constant returns to scale (CRS), and no valid attempts have been made to apply the cross-efficiency concept to the variable returns to scale (VRS) condition. This is due to the fact that negative VRS cross-efficiency arises for some decision-making units (DMUs). Since there exist many instances that require the use of the VRS DEA model, it is imperative to develop cross-efficiency measures under VRS. We show that negative VRS cross-efficiency is related to free production of outputs. We offer a geometric interpretation of the relationship between the CRS and VRS DEA models. We show that each DMU, via solving the VRS model, seeks an optimal bundle of weights with which its CRS-efficiency score, measured under a translated Cartesian coordinate system, is maximized. We propose that VRS cross-efficiency evaluation should be done via a series of CRS models under translated Cartesian coordinate systems. The current study offers a valid cross-efficiency approach under the assumption of VRS—one of the most common assumptions in performance evaluation done by DEA.  相似文献

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) performance evaluation can be implemented from either optimistic or pessimistic perspectives. For an overall performance evaluation from both perspectives, bounded DEA models are introduced to evaluate decision making units (DMUs) in terms of interval efficiencies. This paper reveals unreachability of efficiency and distortion of frontiers associated with the existing bounded DEA models. New bounded DEA models against these problems are proposed by integrating the archetypal optimistic and pessimistic DEA models into a model with bounded efficiency. It provides a new way of deriving empirical estimates of efficiency frontiers in tune with that identified by the archetypal models. Without distortion of frontiers, all DMUs reach interval efficiencies in accordance with that determined by the archetypal models. A unified evaluation and classification result is derived and the efficiency relationships between DMUs are preserved. It is shown that the newly proposed models are more reliable for overall performance evaluation in practice, as illustrated empirically by two examples.  相似文献

Super-efficiency data envelopment analysis (DEA) model is obtained when a decision making unit (DMU) under evaluation is excluded from the reference set. Because of the possible infeasibility of super-efficiency DEA model, the use of super-efficiency DEA model has been restricted to the situations where constant returns to scale (CRS) are assumed. It is shown that one of the input-oriented and output-oriented super-efficiency DEA models must be feasible for a any efficient DMU under evaluation if the variable returns to scale (VRS) frontier consists of increasing, constant, and decreasing returns to scale DMUs. We use both input- and output-oriented super-efficiency models to fully characterize the super-efficiency. When super-efficiency is used as an efficiency stability measure, infeasibility means the highest super-efficiency (stability). If super-efficiency is interpreted as input saving or output surplus achieved by a specific efficient DMU, infeasibility does not necessary mean the highest super-efficiency.  相似文献
