In this paper, we investigate the normwise, mixed, and componentwise condition numbers and their upper bounds for the Moore–Penrose inverse of the Kronecker product and more general matrix function compositions involving Kronecker products. We also present the condition numbers and their upper bounds for the associated Kronecker product linear least squares solution with full column rank. In practice, the derived upper bounds for the mixed and componentwise condition numbers for Kronecker product linear least squares solution can be efficiently estimated using the Hager–Higham Algorithm. In many linear parameter estimation problems, one can use the mixed least squares–total least squares (MTLS) approach to solve them. This paper is devoted to the perturbation analysis of the MTLS problem. Firstly, we present the normwise, mixed, and componentwise condition numbers of the MTLS problem, and find that the normwise, mixed, and componentwise condition numbers of the TLS problem and the LS problem are unified in the ones of the MTLS problem. In the analysis of the first‐order perturbation, we first provide an upper bound based on the normwise condition number. In order to overcome the problems encountered in calculating the normwise condition number, we give an upper bound for computing more effectively for the MTLS problem. As two estimation techniques for solving the linear parameter estimation problems, interesting connections between their solutions, their residuals for the MTLS problem, and the LS problem are compared. Finally, some numerical experiments are performed to illustrate our results.  相似文献

We prove duality results for adjoint operators and product norms in the framework of Euclidean spaces. We show how these results can be used to derive condition numbers especially when perturbations on data are measured componentwise relatively to the original data. We apply this technique to obtain formulas for componentwise and mixed condition numbers for a linear function of a linear least squares solution. These expressions are closed when perturbations of the solution are measured using a componentwise norm or the infinity norm and we get an upper bound for the Euclidean norm.   相似文献

Summary We consider a general class of structured matrices that includes (possibly confluent) Vandermonde and Vandermonde-like matrices. Here the entries in the matrix depend nonlinearly upon a vector of parameters. We define, condition numbers that measure the componentwise sensitivity of the associated primal and dual solutions to small componentwise perturbations in the parameters and in the right-hand side. Convenient expressions are derived for the infinity norm based condition numbers, and order-of-magnitude estimates are given for condition numbers defined in terms of a general vector norm. We then discuss the computation of the corresponding backward errors. After linearising the constraints, we derive an exact expression for the infinity norm dual backward error and show that the corresponding primal backward error is given by the minimum infinity-norm solution of an underdetermined linear system. Exact componentwise condition numbers are also derived for matrix inversion and the least squares problem, and the linearised least squares backward error is characterised.  相似文献

The standard approaches to solving an overdetermined linear system Ax ≈ b find minimal corrections to the vector b and/or the matrix A such that the corrected system is consistent, such as the least squares (LS), the data least squares (DLS) and the total least squares (TLS). The scaled total least squares (STLS) method unifies the LS, DLS and TLS methods. The classical normwise condition numbers for the LS problem have been widely studied. However, there are no such similar results for the TLS and the STLS problems. In this paper, we first present a perturbation analysis of the STLS problem, which is a generalization of the TLS problem, and give a normwise condition number for the STLS problem. Different from normwise condition numbers, which measure the sizes of both input perturbations and output errors using some norms, componentwise condition numbers take into account the relation of each data component, and possible data sparsity. Then in this paper we give explicit expressions for the estimates of the mixed and componentwise condition numbers for the STLS problem. Since the TLS problem is a special case of the STLS problem, the condition numbers for the TLS problem follow immediately from our STLS results. All the discussions in this paper are under the Golub-Van Loan condition for the existence and uniqueness of the STLS solution. One of the most successful methods for solving the least‐squares problem minxAx?b2 with a highly ill‐conditioned or rank deficient coefficient matrix A is the method of Tikhonov regularization. In this paper, we derive the normwise, mixed and componentwise condition numbers and componentwise perturbation bounds for the Tikhonov regularization. Our results are sharper than the known results. Some numerical examples are given to illustrate our results. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Under the Golub-Van Loan condition for the existence and uniqueness of the scaled total least squares (STLS) solution, a first order perturbation estimate for the STLS solution and upper bounds for condition numbers of a STLS problem have been derived by Zhou et al. recently. In this paper, a different perturbation analysis approach for the STLS solution is presented. The analyticity of the solution to the perturbed STLS problem is explored and a new expression for the first order perturbation estimate is derived. Based on this perturbation estimate, for some STLS problems with linear structure we further study the structured condition numbers and derive estimates for them. Numerical experiments show that the structured condition numbers can be markedly less than their unstructured counterparts.  相似文献

Classical condition numbers are normwise: they measure the size of both input perturbations and output errors using some norms. To take into account the relative of each data component, and, in particular, a possible data sparseness, componentwise condition numbers have been increasingly considered. These are mostly of two kinds: mixed and componentwise. In this paper, we give explicit expressions, computable from the data, for the mixed and componentwise condition numbers for the computation of the Moore-Penrose inverse as well as for the computation of solutions and residues of linear least squares problems. In both cases the data matrices have full column (row) rank.

In this paper, we study the properties of the simultaneous and componentwise splines for the varying coefficient model with repeatedly measured (longitudinal) dependent variable and time invariant covariates. The proposed simultaneous smoothing spline estimators are mainly obtained from the penalized least squares with adjustment for the variations of covariates in the penalized terms. We do this mainly to avoid the penalized terms being influenced by the scales of the covariates and the random smoothing parameters appearing in the estimators, which complicates the derivation of the asymptotic properties of the estimators. It is shown in this study that our estimators have smaller variances than the componentwise ones. Through a Monte Carlo simulation and two empirical examples, the simultaneous smoothing splines are all found to be more accurate in the variances.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the problem of estimating the matrix of regression coefficients in a multivariate linear regression model in which the design matrix is near singular. Under the assumption of normality, we propose empirical Bayes ridge regression estimators with three types of shrinkage functions, that is, scalar, componentwise and matricial shrinkage. These proposed estimators are proved to be uniformly better than the least squares estimator, that is, minimax in terms of risk under the Strawderman's loss function. Through simulation and empirical studies, they are also shown to be useful in the multicollinearity cases.  相似文献

In this paper, we settle Higham’s conjecture for the LU factorization of diagonally dominant tridiagonal matrices. We establish a strong componentwise perturbation bound for the solution of a diagonally dominant tridiagonal linear system, independent of the traditional condition number of the coefficient matrix. We then accurately and efficiently solve the linear system by the GTH-like algorithm without pivoting, as suggested by the perturbation result.  相似文献

In this paper, the authors investigate the condition number with their condition numbers for weighted Moore-Penrose inverse and weighted least squares solution of $\mathop {\min }\limits_x ||Ax - b||_M $ , whereA is a rank-deficient complex matrix in ?m × n andb a vector of lengthm in ?m,x a vector of length n in ?n. For the normwise condition number, the sensitivity of the relative condition number itself is studied, the componentwise perturbation is also investigated.  相似文献

Summary F.L. Bauer has treated in several papers [1, 3, 4] the condition related to the solution of linear equations and to the algebraic eigenvalue problem. We study the condition for the linear least squares problem with linear equality constraints (problem LSE). A perturbation theory of problem LSE is presented and three condition numbers are defined. Problem LSE includes the linear least squares problem (problem LS). There are examples with identical solution of problem LSE and of problem LS. Sometimes the condition of problem LSE is better and sometimes the condition of problem LS is better. Several numerical tests illustrate the theory.

Time series data with periodic trends like daily temperatures or sales of seasonal products can be seen in periods fluctuating between highs and lows throughout the year. Generalized least squares estimators are often computed for such time series data as these estimators have minimum variance among all linear unbiased estimators. However, the generalized least squares solution can require extremely demanding computation when the data is large. This paper studies an efficient algorithm for generalized least squares estimation in periodic trended regression with autoregressive errors. We develop an algorithm that can substantially simplify generalized least squares computation by manipulating large sets of data into smaller sets. This is accomplished by coining a structured matrix for dimension reduction. Simulations show that the new computation methods using our algorithm can drastically reduce computing time. Our algorithm can be easily adapted to big data that show periodic trends often pertinent to economics, environmental studies, and engineering practices.  相似文献

The perturbation analysis of weighted and constrained rank‐deficient linear least squares is difficult without the use of the augmented system of equations. In this paper a general form of the augmented system is used to get simple perturbation identities and perturbation bounds for the general linear least squares problem both for the full‐rank and rank‐deficient problem. Perturbation identities for the rank‐deficient weighted and constrained case are found as a special case. Interesting perturbation bounds and condition numbers are derived that may be useful when considering the stability of a solution of the rank‐deficient general least squares problem. Consider a minimization problem of a convex quadratic function of several variables over a set of inequality constraints of the same type of function. The duel program is a maximization problem with a concave objective function and a set of constrains that are essentially linear. However, the objective function is not differentiable over the constraint region. In this paper, we study a general theory of dual perturbations and derive a fundamental relationship between a perturbed dual program and the original problem. Based on this relationship, we establish a perturbation theory to display that a well-controlled perturbation on the dual program can overcome the nondifferentiability issue and generate an ε-optimal dual solution for an arbitrarily small number ε. A simple linear program is then constructed to make an easy conversion from the dual solution to a corresponding ε-optimal primal solution. Moreover, a numerical example is included to illustrate the potential of this controlled perturbation scheme.  相似文献
