In this paper, we present a variable selection procedure by combining basis function approximations with penalized estimating equations for semiparametric varying-coefficient partially linear models with missing response at random. The proposed procedure simultaneously selects significant variables in parametric components and nonparametric components. With appropriate selection of the tuning parameters, we establish the consistency of the variable selection procedure and the convergence rate of the regularized estimators. A simulation study is undertaken to assess the finite sample performance of the proposed variable selection procedure.

We propose a two-stage model selection procedure for the linear mixed-effects models. The procedure consists of two steps: First, penalized restricted log-likelihood is used to select the random effects, and this is done by adopting a Newton-type algorithm. Next, the penalized log-likelihood is used to select the fixed effects via pathwise coordinate optimization to improve the computation efficiency. We prove that our procedure has the oracle properties. Both simulation studies and a real data example are carried out to examine finite sample performance of the proposed fixed and random effects selection procedure. Supplementary materials including R code used in this article and proofs for the theorems are available online.

Variable selection methods using a penalized likelihood have been widely studied in various statistical models. However, in semiparametric frailty models, these methods have been relatively less studied because the marginal likelihood function involves analytically intractable integrals, particularly when modeling multicomponent or correlated frailties. In this article, we propose a simple but unified procedure via a penalized h-likelihood (HL) for variable selection of fixed effects in a general class of semiparametric frailty models, in which random effects may be shared, nested, or correlated. We consider three penalty functions (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator [LASSO], smoothly clipped absolute deviation [SCAD], and HL) in our variable selection procedure. We show that the proposed method can be easily implemented via a slight modification to existing HL estimation approaches. Simulation studies also show that the procedure using the SCAD or HL penalty performs well. The usefulness of the new method is illustrated using three practical datasets too. Supplementary materials for the article are available online.

The generalized information criterion (GIC) proposed by Rao and Wu [A strongly consistent procedure for model selection in a regression problem, Biometrika 76 (1989) 369-374] is a generalization of Akaike's information criterion (AIC) and the Bayesian information criterion (BIC). In this paper, we extend the GIC to select linear mixed-effects models that are widely applied in analyzing longitudinal data. The procedure for selecting fixed effects and random effects based on the extended GIC is provided. The asymptotic behavior of the extended GIC method for selecting fixed effects is studied. We prove that, under mild conditions, the selection procedure is asymptotically loss efficient regardless of the existence of a true model and consistent if a true model exists. A simulation study is carried out to empirically evaluate the performance of the extended GIC procedure. The results from the simulation show that if the signal-to-noise ratio is moderate or high, the percentages of choosing the correct fixed effects by the GIC procedure are close to one for finite samples, while the procedure performs relatively poorly when it is used to select random effects.

Partially linear regression models with fixed effects are useful tools for making econometric analyses and normalizing microarray data. Baltagi and Li (2002) [7] proposed a computation friendly difference-based series estimation (DSE) for them. We show that the DSE is not asymptotically efficient in most cases and further propose a weighted difference-based series estimation (WDSE). The weights in it do not involve any unknown parameters. The asymptotic properties of the resulting estimators are established for both balanced and unbalanced cases, and it is shown that they achieve a semiparametric efficient boundary. Additionally, we propose a variable selection procedure for identifying significant covariates in the parametric part of the semiparametric fixed-effects regression model. The method is based on a combination of the nonconcave penalization (Fan and Li, 2001 [13]) and weighted difference-based series estimation techniques. The resulting estimators have the oracle property; that is, they can correctly identify the true model as if the true model (the subset of variables with nonvanishing coefficients) were known in advance. Simulation studies are conducted and an application is given to demonstrate the finite sample performance of the proposed procedures.

Generalized linear mixed-effect models are widely used for the analysis of correlated non-Gaussian data such as those found in longitudinal studies. In this article, we consider extensions with nonparametric fixed effects and parametric random effects. The estimation is through the penalized likelihood method, and our focus is on the efficient computation and the effective smoothing parameter selection. To assist efficient computation, the joint likelihood of the observations and the latent variables of the random effects is used instead of the marginal likelihood of the observations. For the selection of smoothing parameters and correlation parameters, direct cross-validation techniques are employed; the effectiveness of cross-validation with respect to a few loss functions are evaluated through simulation studies. Real data examples are presented to illustrate potential applications of the methodology. Open-source R code is demonstrated in the Appendix.

This article considers a semiparametric varying-coefficient partially linear binary regression model. The semiparametric varying-coefficient partially linear regression binary model which is a generalization of binary regression model and varying-coefficient regression model that allows one to explore the possibly nonlinear effect of a certain covariate on the response variable. A Sieve maximum likelihood estimation method is proposed and the asymptotic properties of the proposed estimators are discussed. One of our main objects is to estimate nonparametric component and the unknowen parameters simultaneously. It is easier to compute, and the required computation burden is much less than that of the existing two-stage estimation method. Under some mild conditions, the estimators are shown to be strongly consistent. The convergence rate of the estimator for the unknown smooth function is obtained, and the estimator for the unknown parameter is shown to be asymptotically efficient and normally distributed. Simulation studies are carried out to investigate the performance of the proposed method.
