In situ generated aryl diazonium cations were synthesized in the electrochemical cell by reaction of the corresponding amines with NaNO2 in aqueous HCl. This paper reports a study of the formation of mixed layers from in situ generated aryl diazonium cations. Firstly, glassy carbon (GC) and gold electrode surfaces were modified with five single in situ generated aryl diazonium salts to obtain their corresponding reductive potential followed by the modification of GC and gold surfaces with eight binary mixed layers of in situ generated aryl diazonium salts. The difference between GC and gold surfaces in terms of in situ formation of two‐component aryl diazonium salt films was compared. The behavior of the mixed layers formed from in situ generated aryl diazonium salts relative to diazonium salts that were pre‐synthesized prior to surface modification was also investigated. Cyclic voltammetry and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the resulting modified GC and gold surfaces. It is found that for some aryl diazonium salts the potential at which reductive adsorption is achieved on gold and GC surfaces is significantly different. For the eight sets of binary mixed layers, the species with more anodic potential are more difficult to attach to the both GC and gold surfaces. The behavior of the mixed layers formed from in situ generated aryl diazonium salts and the pre‐synthesized diazonium salts is similar; which emphasizes the advantage of the in situ approach without any apparent difference in behavior to the presynthesized diazonium salts.  相似文献

The scope of this study is to modify a Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) sensor slide with isophthalic acid to evaluate the possible application on the detection of copper(II) ions in aqueous media by total internal reflection ellipsometry. A gold sensor surface was modified by an electrochemical diazonium reduction modification method. The modified surfaces are characterized with cyclic voltammetry (CV) and ellipsometry. Isophthalic acid monolayer modified gold slides were used for in situ detection of aqueous Cu(2+) solution with the SPR enhanced total internal reflection ellipsometry (SPRe-TIRE) technique. Layer formation, pH dependency of adsorption, sensor response of the SPRe-TIRE and isothermal kinetic parameters were examined. A high dependency on the number of CV cycles in the monolayer-multiple layer transition was observed. The suggested sensor gave a linear response over a wide range of Cu(2+) concentrations. It was also reported that adsorption on the SPRe-TIRE sensor gave Langmuir adsorption model behavior.  相似文献

4‐Nitrophenyl layers were grafted on gold and glassy carbon surfaces by electrochemical reductive adsorption of the corresponding diazonium salt. Electrochemical conversion efficiencies of 4‐nitrophenyl moieties to 4‐aminophenyl moieties on gold versus on glassy carbon in a protic medium were investigated using X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In total contrast to all previous comparative studies showing greater electrochemical reactivity of aryl diazonium salt‐derived layers on gold than on glassy carbon, a much lower rate of conversion to 4‐aminophenyl was observed on gold than on glassy carbon by both cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA) methods. The lower electron transfer rate during conversion observed on gold versus glassy carbon was proposed to be due to a mechanism related to the molecular structure rearrangement of 4‐nitrophenyl during the process on glassy carbon. However, whilst complete conversion of 4‐nitrophenyl to 4‐aminophenyl on gold by chronoamperometry was achieved, on glassy carbon complete reduction could not be achieved under the same conditions.  相似文献

In this paper we describe a novel methodology for grafting polymers via radical photopolymerization initiated on gold surfaces by aryl layers from diazonium salt precursors. The parent 4-(dimethylamino)benzenediazonium salt was electroreduced on a gold surface to provide 4-(dimethylamino)phenyl (DMA) hydrogen donor layers; free benzophenone in solution was used as a photosensitizer to strip hydrogen from the grafted DMA. This system permitted efficient surface initiation of photopolymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate. The resulting poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) grafts were found to be very adherent to the surface as they resist total failure after being soaked in the well-known paint stripper methyl ethyl ketone. The PHEMA grafts were reacted with 1,1'-carbonyldiimidazole to yield carbamate groups that are able to react readily with amino groups from proteins. The final surface consisted of protein-functionalized PHEMA grafts where bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein is specifically linked to the grafts by covalent bonds. We used X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to monitor the chemical changes at the gold surface all along the process from the neat gold to the end-protein-functionalized polymer grafts: the PHEMA graft thickness ranged from 7 to 27 nm, and the activation by 1,1'-carbonyldiimidazole reached 37% of the OH groups, which was sufficient for 90% surface coverage of the grafts by BSA. This work conclusively provides a new approach for bridging reactive and functional polymers to surfaces via aryl diazonium salts in a simple, fast, and efficient approach of importance in biomedical and other applications.  相似文献

In the last decade, aryldiazonium salts have attracted interest as coupling partners in cross-coupling reactions mediated by gold. Initially, the presence of a photocatalyst and a light source was needed to achieve gold oxidation with these electrophiles. However, recently, it has been shown that in some instances just heating, light irradiation, or the addition of certain bases and/or nucleophiles is enough. In this review, the transformations developed so far using aryldiazonium salts as electrophiles are summarized with special emphasis on mechanistic studies. The information gained by different authors, indicates that the specific steps of gold oxidation with aryldiazonium salts depends upon the activation mode of the diazonium salt.  相似文献

Low impedance, antifouling coatings on gold electrodes based on three new zwitterionic phenyl phosphorylcholine (PPC)‐based layers namely 1) reductively adsorbed PPC diazonium salt, 2) dithiocarbamate PPC SAM and 3) lipoamide PPC SAM (PPC coupled to α‐lipoic acid) were evaluated. The layers were assessed for their ability to limit nonspecific adsorption of proteins to electrode surface with some significant differences observed compared with previously studied PPC diazonium salts reductively adsorbed on glassy carbon. Fluorescence microscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results suggest that protein adsorption is sensitive to the difference in the structure of the PPC molecules and the charge neutrality of the layers. The lipoamide PPC SAM was shown to be the most effective at resisting nonspecific protein adsorption and this layer was as effective as the ‘gold standard’ of oligo(ethylene oxide) SAMs on gold and PPC diazonium salts reductively adsorbed on glassy carbon.  相似文献

A comparison of the reductive adsorption behavior of 4‐sulfophenyl diazonium salt and subsequent electrochemical reactivity on gold relative to carbon was studied with some significant differences observed. The ability of the 4‐sulfophenyl layer adsorbed onto gold to block access of the redox probe ferricyanide to the underlying electrodes, as determined via cyclic voltammetry was inferior to the same layers formed on glassy carbon electrodes thus indicating a more open, porous layer formed on gold. More significantly, the 4‐sulfophenyl layers are shown to be far less electrochemically stable on gold than on glassy carbon. Electrochemical and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) evidence suggests the instability is due to cleavage of the bond between sulfonate functional group and phenyl ring. These results provide further evidence that although aryl diazonium salt layers are relatively stable on gold surfaces compared with alkanethiol based self‐assembled monolayer (SAMs), the stability is not as high as is observed on carbon.  相似文献

The electrochemical grafting process of 4-nitrobenzene and 4-methoxybenzene (anisole) from diazonium salt solutions has been investigated in situ by monitoring the current density, the band bending, and the nonradiative surface recombination during grafting at different potentials and different concentrations of the diazonium salt in the solution. Ex situ infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry has been used to inspect the Si surface species before and after the grafting process. The band bending decreases with either increasing concentration of diazonium salt or when the redox potential of the diazonium compound (anisole) is nearer to the competing H+/H2 couple. The surface recombination increases at more cathodic potentials if an electron donor group is present at the phenyl ring (nitrobenzene) and vice versa for the electron acceptor group (anisole). The influence of side reactions can be reduced by use of moderate concentration and moderate or strong cathodic potential, depending on the redox potential of the diazonium compound.  相似文献

Functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) using diazonium salts allows modification of their optical and electronic properties for a variety of applications, ranging from drug-delivery vehicles to molecular sensors. However, control of the functionalization process remains a challenge, requiring molecular-level understanding of the adsorption of diazonium ions onto heterogeneous, charge-mobile SWCNT surfaces, which are typically decorated with surfactants. In this paper, we combine molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, experiments, and equilibrium reaction modeling to understand and model the extent of diazonium functionalization of SWCNTs coated with various surfactants (sodium cholate, sodium dodecyl sulfate, and cetyl trimethylammonium bromide). We show that the free energy of diazonium adsorption, determined using simulations, can be used to rank surfactants in terms of the extent of functionalization attained following their adsorption on the nanotube surface. The difference in binding affinities between linear and rigid surfactants is attributed to the synergistic binding of the diazonium ion to the local "hot/cold spots" formed by the charged surfactant heads. A combined simulation-modeling framework is developed to provide guidance for controlling the various sensitive experimental conditions needed to achieve the desired extent of SWCNT functionalization.  相似文献

The applicability and versatility of the recently communicated procedure for the grafting of conducting carbon substrates by diaryliodonium salts is expanded. We have found that several types of organic arylic layers can be formed on the carbon surface and that the chemical functionalities of the thus formed layers can be varied extensively over electron withdrawing (for example, -NO2) to electron donating (for example, -OMe) groups. A comparative study involving the grafting of aryldiazonium salts reveals that, despite the two approaches being similar, iodonium salts exhibit spontaneous grafting to a significantly lower extent. Nevertheless, the grafted layer becomes less accessible to proton transport as visualized from a greater reluctance toward the reduction of surface-confined nitro groups to amino groups in acidic medium. Employment of unsymmetrical iodonium salts opens up the interesting possibility of forming organic films consisting of a mixture of two different aryl groups. Alternatively, such composite layers may be prepared by selecting iodonium and diazonium salts with comparable reduction properties. Analysis of the surfaces is carried out by means of cyclic voltammetry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ToF-SIMS (time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry). The ToF-SIMS analysis primarily serves to provide unambiguous evidence for the covalent attachment of the organic layers to the surface.  相似文献

The properties of Si(111) surfaces grafted with benzene derivatives were investigated using ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The investigated materials were nitro-, bromo-, and methoxybenzene layers (-C(6)H(4)-X, with X = NO(2), Br, O-CH(3)) deposited from diazonium salt solutions in a potentiostatic electrochemical process. The UPS spectra of the valence band region are governed by the molecular orbital density of states of the adsorbates, which is modified from the isolated state in the gas phase due to molecule-molecule and molecule-substrate interaction. Depending on the adsorbate, clearly different emission features are observed. The analysis of XPS intensities clearly proves multilayer formation for bromo- and nitrobenzene in agreement with the amount of charge transferred during the grafting process. Methoxybenzene forms only a sub-monolayer coverage. The detailed analysis of binding energy shifts of the XPS emissions for determining the band bending and the secondary electron onset in UPS spectra for determining the work function allow one to discriminate between surface dipole layers--changing the electron affinity--and band bending, affecting only the work function. Thus, complete energy band diagrams of the grafted Si(111) surfaces can be constructed. It was found that silicon surface engineering can be accomplished by the electrochemical grafting process using nitrobenzene and bromobenzene: silicon-derived interface gap states are chemically passivated, and the adsorbate-related surface dipole effects an increase of the electron affinity.  相似文献

Redox grafting of aryldiazonium salts containing redox units may be used to form exceptionally thick covalently attached conducting films, even in the micrometers range, in a controlled manner on glassy carbon and gold substrates. With the objective to investigate the mechanism of this process in detail, 1-anthraquinone (AQ) redox units were immobilized on these substrates by electroreduction of 9,10-dioxo-9,10-dihydroanthracene-1-diazonium tetrafluoroborate. Electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance was employed to follow the grafting process during a cyclic voltammetric sweep by recording the frequency change. The redox grafting is shown to have two mass gain regions/phases: an irreversible one due to the addition of AQ units to the substrate/film and a reversible one due to the association of cations from the supporting electrolyte with the AQ radical anions formed during the sweeping process. Scanning electrochemical microscopy was used to study the relationship between the conductivity of the film and the charging level of the AQ redox units in the grafted film. For that purpose, approach curves were recorded at a platinum ultramicroelectrode for AQ-containing films on gold and glassy carbon surfaces using the ferro/ferricyanide redox system as redox probe. It is concluded that the film growth has its origin in electron transfer processes occurring through the layer mediated by the redox moieties embedded in the organic film.  相似文献

Homopolymer grafts from α-tert-butoxy-ω-vinylbenzyl-polyglycidol (PGL) were prepared on gold and stainless steel (SS) substrates modified by 4-benzoyl-phenyl (BP) moieties derived from the electroreduction of the parent salt 4-benzoyl benzene diazonium tetrafluoroborate. The grafted BP aryl groups efficiently served to surface-initiate photopolymerization (SIPP) of PGL. In similar conditions, SIPP of hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) permitted the production of PHEMA grafts as model surfaces. Water contact angles were found to be 66°, 15°, and 0° for SS-BP, SS-PHEMA, and SS-PPGL, respectively. The spontaneous spreading of water drops on SS-PPGL was invariably observed with 1.5 μL water drops. PPGL thus appears as a superhydrophilic polymer. Resistance to nonspecific adsorption of proteins of PPGL and PHEMA grafts on gold was evaluated by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) using antibovine serum albumin (anti-BSA). The results conclusively show that PPGL-grafts exhibit enhanced resistance to anti-BSA adsorption compared to the well-known hydrophilic PHEMA. PPGL grafts were further modified with BSA through the carbonyldiimidazole activation of the OH groups providing immunosensing surfaces. The so-prepared PPGL-grafted BSA hybrids specifically interacted with anti-BSA in PBS as compared to antimyoglobin. It is clear that the superhydrophilic character of PPGL grafts opens new avenues for biomedical applications where surfaces with dual functionality, namely, specific protein grafting together with resistance to biofouling, are required.  相似文献

Thick conductive layers containing anthraquinone moieties are covalently immobilized on gold using redox grafting of the diazonium salt of anthraquinone (i.e., 9,10-dioxo-9,10-dihydroanthracene-1-diazonium tetrafluoroborate). This grafting procedure is based on using consecutive voltammetric sweeping and through this exploiting fast electron transfer reactions that are mediated by the anthraquinone redox moieties in the film. The fast film growth, which is followed by infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ellipsometry, and coverage calculation, results in a mushroom-like structure. In addition to varying the number of sweeps, layer thickness control can easily be exerted through appropriate choice of the switching potential and sweep rate. It is shown that the grafting of the diazonium salt is essentially a diffusion-controlled process but also that desorption of physisorbed material during the sweeping process is essentially for avoiding blocking of the film due to clogging of the electrolyte channels in the film. In general, sweep rates higher than 0.5 V s(-1) are required if thick, porous, and conducting films should be formed.  相似文献

Hexagonally structured mesoporous carbons C15 and CMK-5 and cubically structured carbon C48 were synthesized using ordered silica SBA-15 and MCM-48 as templates and carbon precursors of different structures. The surfaces of these ordered carbons were chemically functionalized by employing an approach, in which the selected diazonium compounds were in situ generated and reacted with the carbon frameworks of the mesoporous carbons. The aromatic organic molecules containing chlorine, ester, and alkyl groups were covalently attached to the surface of these ordered mesoporous carbons. The presence of functional groups on the modified carbons was confirmed with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and nitrogen adsorption. The BET-specific surface area and the pore width of ordered carbons were significantly reduced, whereas the primary structure of these ordered carbons and their unit cells were intact. Basically, the density of grafted functional groups is related to the specific surface area of the sample, particularly the surface area of mesopores. The surface functionalization reaction takes place only on the external surface of carbon C15, while it occurs on both of the internal and external surface of CMK-5 carbon with the nanopipe structure. The presence of the micropores in CMK-5 carbon should be responsible for its lower grafting density because the small micropores are inaccessible in the reaction. It was also proposed that the preferred adsorption/reaction in C48 may be related to the observed unsymmetrical degradation of the XRD patterns for the functionalized C48 samples. The chemical modification process considerably reduced the primary mesopores in these ordered carbons by approximately 1-1.5 nm, affording carbons with micropores in the cases of C15 and C48, and mixed micropores and small mesopores in the case of CMK-5. A grafting density of approximately 0.9-1.5 micromol/m(2) was achieved under current research.  相似文献

We present in situ observations of adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) on citrate-stabilized gold nanospheres. We implemented scattering correlation spectroscopy as a tool to quantify changes in the nanoparticle brownian motion resulting from BSA adsorption onto the nanoparticle surface. Protein binding was observed as an increase in the nanoparticle hydrodynamic radius. Our results indicate the formation of a protein monolayer at similar albumin concentrations as those found in human blood. Additionally, by monitoring the frequency and intensity of individual scattering events caused by single gold nanoparticles passing the observation volume, we found that BSA did not induce colloidal aggregation, a relevant result from the toxicological viewpoint. Moreover, to elucidate the thermodynamics of the gold nanoparticle-BSA association, we measured an adsorption isotherm which was best described by an anticooperative binding model. The number of binding sites based on this model was consistent with a BSA monolayer in its native state. In contrast, experiments using poly(ethylene glycol)-capped gold nanoparticles revealed no evidence for adsorption of BSA.  相似文献

A versatile and simple method is introduced for formation of maleimide-functionalized surfaces using maleimide-activated aryl diazonium salts. We show for the first time electrodeposition of N-(4-diazophenyl)maleimide tetrafluoroborate on gold and carbon electrodes which was characterized via voltammetry, grazing angle FTIR, and ellipsometry. Electrodeposition conditions were used to control film thickness and yielded submonolayer-to-multilayer grafting. The resulting phenylmaleimide surfaces served as effective coupling agents for electrode functionalization with ferrocene and the redox-active protein cytochrome c. The utility of phenylmaleimide diazonium toward formation of a diazonium-activated conjugate, followed by direct electrodeposition of the diazonium-modified DNA onto the electrode surface, was also demonstrated. Effective electron transfer was obtained between immobilized molecules and the electrodes. This novel application of N-phenylmaleimide diazonium may facilitate the development of bioelectronic devices including biofuel cells, biosensors, and DNA and protein microarrays.  相似文献

We have prepared and isolated the monodiazonium salt of nickel (II) tetraphenylporphyrin and grafted the corresponding complex to glassy carbon, pyrolysed photoresist film, gold and indium tin oxide surfaces via reduction of the diazonium moiety. Characterisations of the films by voltammetry, UV–vis spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy depth profiling confirm that the metallated porphyrin is intact in the film and is stably attached to the surface with well-behaved, but highly solvent-dependent electrochemistry. Under the grafting conditions used, the films appear to have close to monolayer thickness with the porphyrin macrocycles oriented predominantly upright on the surface.  相似文献

Platinum phases of general formula [Pt(n-), M+, MX] can be electrogenerated from cathodic polarization in dry dimethylformamide containing a supporting electrolyte, MX. The reaction of these electrogenerated Pt phases as reducing agent with aryldiazonium salts was investigated for preparing controlled metal-organic interfaces and characterizing the reactivity of the "reduced platinum phases". In a two-step process, the "reduced platinum phase" locally reacts with aryldiazonium salts, leading to the attachment of aryl groups onto the metal surface in the previously modified areas. Detailed experiments using cyclic voltammetry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and in situ electrochemical atomic force microscopy (EC-AFM) were carried out to follow the reaction in solution with the example of NaI as supporting electrolyte (MX = NaI). These studies demonstrate the irreversible attachment of aryl groups onto the platinum electrode. Comparison between the direct electroreduction of aryldiazonium compounds (4-nitrophenyl- and 4-bromophenyldiazonium) on a platinum electrode and their reaction with [Pt2-, Na+, NaI] suggests that a similar general mechanism is responsible for the grafting. However in the second case, no applied potential is required to stimulate the binding thanks to the reductive properties of [Pt2-, Na+, NaI]. Competitive reduction of the organic layer and growth of the layer were observed and analyzed as a function of the injected charge used to initially produce [Pt2-, Na+, NaI]. Similar reactions are highly probable with other MX salts owing to the redox properties observed for this type of platinum phase ([Pt(n-), M+, MX]).  相似文献

Nanoparticles of gold on TiO2 are highly chemoselective for the reduction of substituted nitroaromatics, such as nitrostyrene. By combining kinetics and in situ IR spectroscopy, it has been found that there is a preferential adsorption of the reactant on the catalyst through the nitro group. IR studies of nitrobenzene, styrene, and nitrostyrene adsorption, together with quantum chemical calculations, show that the nitro and the olefinic groups adsorb weakly on the Au(111) and Au(001) surfaces, and that although a stronger adsorption occurs on low-coordinated atoms in gold nanoparticles, this adsorption is not selective. On the other hand, an energetically and geometrically favored adsorption through the nitro group occurs on the TiO2 support and in the interface between the gold nanoparticle and the TiO2 support. Such preferential adsorption is not observed with nanoparticles of gold on silica which, contrary to the Au/TiO2 catalyst, is not chemoselective for the reduction of substituted nitroaromatic compounds. Therefore, the high chemoselectiviy of the Au/TiO2 catalyst can be attributed to a cooperation between the gold nanoparticle and the support that preferentially activates the nitro group.  相似文献
