The acoustic effects of the laryngeal cavity on the vocal tract resonance were investigated by using vocal tract area functions for the five Japanese vowels obtained from an adult male speaker. Transfer functions were examined with the laryngeal cavity eliminated from the whole vocal tract, volume velocity distribution patterns were calculated, and susceptance matching analysis was performed between the laryngeal cavity and the vocal tract excluding the laryngeal cavity (vocal tract proper). It was revealed that the laryngeal cavity generates one of the formants of the vocal tract, which is the fourth in the present study. At this formant, the resonance of the laryngeal cavity (the 1/4 wavelength resonance) induces the open-tube resonance of the vocal tract proper (the 3/2 wavelength resonance). At the other formants, on the other hand, the vocal tract proper acts as a closed tube, because the laryngeal cavity has only a small contribution to generating these formants and the effective closed end of the whole vocal tract is the junction between the laryngeal cavity and the vocal tract proper.  相似文献

Irregularities in voiced speech are often observed as a consequence of vocal fold lesions, paralyses, and other pathological conditions. Many of these instabilities are related to the intrinsic nonlinearities in the vibrations of the vocal folds. In this paper, bifurcations in voice signals are analyzed using narrow-band spectrograms. We study sustained phonation of patients with laryngeal paralysis and data from an excised larynx experiment. We present a comprehensive, functional analysis of clinical voice data derived from both high-speed digital imaging (HSDI) of the larynx and simultaneously acquired acoustic recordings. The goals of this study are to: (1) correlate dynamic characteristics of the vocal folds derived from direct laryngeal imaging with indirectly acquired acoustic measurements; (2) define the advantages of using a combined imaging/acoustic approach for the analysis of voice condition; and (3) identify new quantitative measures to evaluate the regularity of the vocal fold vibration and the complexity of the vocal output -- these measures will be key to successful diagnosis of vocal abnormalities. Image- and acoustic-based analyses are performed using an analytic phase plot approach previously introduced by our group (referred to as 'Nyquist' plot). Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) spectral analyses are performed on the same data for a comparison. Clinical HSDI and acoustic recordings from subjects having normal and specific voice pathologies, including muscular tension dysphonia (MTD) and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) were analyzed using the Nyquist plot approach. The results of these analyses show that a combined imaging/acoustic analysis approach provides better characterization of the vibratory behavior of the vocal folds as it correlates with vocal output and pathology.  相似文献

SUMMARY: Laryngeal electromyography (EMG) functions routinely as a prognostic tool in the evaluation of vocal fold paralysis, as a guide for therapeutic injections into the laryngeal muscles, and more recently as an assessment tool in the evaluation of vocal fold paresis. This study investigates the clinical utility of laryngeal EMG as a diagnostic aid in the evaluation of movement disorders of the larynx in patients complaining of dysphonia. A retrospective chart review of all laryngeal EMGs performed at a tertiary laryngology referral center over a 13-month period was performed. All laryngeal EMGs were performed to evaluate laryngeal motion abnormalities in dysphonic patients. Thirty-seven laryngeal EMGs were completed during this study period. Analysis of the data revealed that the medical treatment plan changed as a result of findings on laryngeal EMG in 10/37 patients (27.0%); laryngeal EMG guided and/or confirmed the course of treatment in 12/37 patients (32.4%) and did not change the treatment plan in 15/37 patients (40.5%). Laryngeal EMG is a useful diagnostic tool that, in this study, contributed significantly to and helped guide the evaluation and management of motion disorders in the larynx of dysphonic patients.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to observe and document variations in configuration and movement of the lower vocal tract and selected laryngeal structures in a sample of normal speakers. Ten men and ten women, ranging in age from 21 to 33 years, judged to have normal voices, were examined fiber-optically. Each subject engaged in a set protocol of phonatory and nonphonatory tasks and all examinations were videotaped. Judges reviewed these recordings with special attention to the following structures: pharyngeal wall, epiglottis, pyriform sinuses, ventricular folds, true vocal folds and the arytenoid complex. Extensive variability among these normals was observed anatomically and physiologically.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to quantitatively analyze the degree of erythema visible in the larynges of normal subjects and of patients with symptoms of chronic posterior laryngitis. Video-documented examinations of laryngoscopy were digitized and then analyzed using computer image analysis software that allowed quantification of average color values, hue, saturation, and brightness from digitized color images. Documented laryngoscopic images from 7 normal subjects and 64 patients complaining of chronic laryngitis symptoms were examined, and additional patient examinations which were obtained and documented during treatment for reflux laryngitis were analyzed. Analysis was made of five different areas of each laryngeal image: the right and left vocal folds, the right and left vocal processes, and the posterior arytenoid mucosa. Data analysis showed that average color value ratings of redness for the patients with chronic laryngitis were significantly (p <0 .0561) greater than the average values for normal subjects for the vocal folds. Color values for redness of the posterior laryngeal structures and vocal folds in the patients who were treated for reflux laryngitis were significantly (p < 0.05) reduced over time and correlated with the clinical response to treatment. The data suggest that computer color analysis of documented video-laryngoscopy examinations can provide quantitative data on degree of erythema and may be useful as a quantitative means of diagnosis and documentation of treatment outcome for reflux laryngitis.  相似文献

A technique has been developed to obtain a quantitative measure of correlation between electromyographic (EMG) activity of various laryngeal muscles, subglottal air pressure, and the fundamental frequency of vibration of the vocal folds (Fo). Data were collected and analyzed on one subject, a native speaker of American English. The results show that an analysis of this type can provide a useful measure of correlation between the physiological and acoustical events in speech and, furthermore, can yield detailed insights into the organization and nature of the speech production process. In particular, based on these results, a model is suggested of Fo control involving laryngeal state functions that seems to agree with present knowledge of laryngeal control and experimental evidence.  相似文献

Our purpose was to study the occurrence of vocal fold nodules under conditions of habitual vocal abuse associated with increased laryngeal muscle tension, to identify the existence of a relationship between vocal nodules and laryngeal morphology. We studied one group of 30 subjects with vocal nodules, 18 to 50 years old, who were compared with two control groups, one of females and one of males, consisting of 30 subjects each. The parameters evaluated were: type of vocal folds coaptation, glottic proportion (GP) and abduction angle (AA), obtained by videotelelaryngoscopy. In the nodules group, the larynges presented a mean value of GP similar to that of the female group, both of which were lower than the mean GP value of the male group. On the other hand, the mean AA was lower than the one in the female group, and closer to the one in the male group. We concluded that vocal nodules were present only in larynges with a predominantly young female morphology, with functional limitations of abduction.  相似文献

In Reinke's space of human vocal fold, type III collagen forms a three dimensional network and this contains numerous minute chambers in between these fibers. These compartments are occupied by glycosaminoglycans and glycoproteins. In laryngeal fold lesions, such as Reinke's edema and vocal fold polyps, proteoglycan (PG)/hyaluronic acid (HA) components of extracellular matrix increased. We investigated the size and quantity of the minute chambers within Reinke's space, filled with PG/HA with the aid of transmission electron microscopy. Eight vocal fold polyps and 10 mucosal biopsies (as control group) were all evaluated by light microscopy and electron microscopy. We detected that PG/HA in extracellular matrix had been increased in vocal fold lesions when compared with control group, by Alcian Blue-pH 2.5 stain. The mean volume of the chambers in Reinke's space of normal larynx was measured as 0.040233 µm2 whereas the mean volume of these chambers in vocal fold polyps was measured as 6.420221 µm2. The difference between the volumes of these chambers in vocal fold polyps and in control group was statistically significant (P = 0.001). Within these chambers PG/HA were found and PG/HA filling these chambers were increased in vocal fold polyps. We think proteoglycan and glycosaminoglycans, especially HA, play an important role in determining biochemical properties of vocal fold lesions.  相似文献

Acoustic effects of the time-varying glottal area due to vocal fold vibration on the laryngeal cavity resonance were investigated based on vocal tract area functions and acoustic analysis. The laryngeal cavity consists of the vestibular and ventricular parts of the larynx, and gives rise to a regional acoustic resonance within the vocal tract, with this resonance imparting an extra formant to the vocal tract resonance pattern. Vocal tract transfer functions of the five Japanese vowels uttered by three male subjects were calculated under open- and closed-glottis conditions. The results revealed that the resonance appears at the frequency region from 3.0 to 3.7 kHz when the glottis is closed and disappears when it is open. Real spectra estimated from open- and closed-glottis periods of vowel sounds also showed the on-off pattern of the resonance within a pitch period. Furthermore, a time-domain acoustic analysis of vowels indicated that the resonance component could be observed as a pitch-synchronized rise-and-fall pattern of the bandpass amplitude. The cyclic nature of the resonance can be explained as the laryngeal cavity acting as a closed tube that generates the resonance during a closed-glottis period, but damps the resonance off during an open-glottis period.  相似文献

Coupling between the vocal folds is one of the nonlinear mechanisms allowing regulation and synchronization of mucosal vibration. The purpose of this study was to establish that modulations such as diplophonia and abnormalities observed in vocal signals that may be observed in some cases of laryngeal pathology can be considered as nonlinear behavior due to the persistence of some physical interaction (coupling). An experimental model using excised porcine larynx was designed to create tension asymmetry between the vocal folds and to obtain vocal signals with modulations. Signals were analyzed by spectral analysis and the phase portrait method. Results were compared with computer-generated synthetic signals corresponding to nonlinear combinations of sinusoid signals. Under these conditions, evidence of nonlinear behavior was detected in 85% of experimental signals. These findings were interpreted as a demonstration of vocal fold interaction. Based on these findings, the authors conclude that (1) coupling must be taken into account in physical models of laryngeal physiology, and that (2) methods of nonlinear dynamics may be used for objective voice analysis.  相似文献

Vocal process avulsion is a rare condition in which laryngeal trauma causes a separation of the vocal process from the body of the arytenoid cartilage. Typically symptoms are dysphonia and shortness of breath during phonation. Strobovideolaryngoscopy, laryngeal electromyography, and laryngeal computed tomography are helpful in establishing this important and sometimes elusive diagnosis. Several treatment modalities have been reported with varying success. We report four new cases, review four cases reported previously by the senior author, and suggest approaches to diagnosis and optimal treatment of vocal process avulsion.  相似文献

In this study, we evaluated the relationship between laryngeal function measures and glottal gap ratio and normalized measures of supraglottic behaviors in patients with unilateral vocal fold paresis (UVFP). Thirty-one patients were found to have unilateral vocal fold paresis by videoendoscopy and laryngeal electromyography, and 13 controls participated in this study. Patients with UVFP demonstrated significantly larger glottal gap ratios (p = 0.016) than control subjects. The nonparalyzed or contralateral vocal fold was associated with significantly more static false vocal fold compression (p = 0.03) compared with the paralyzed vocal fold or with the controls. Patients with unilateral vocal fold paresis were divided into subgroups: those with normal or abnormal maximum phonation time, flow, or pressure measures. Smaller glottal gap ratios were identified in patients with normal maximum phonation times and flow measures. Greater false vocal fold activity was identified in unilateral vocal fold paresis patients with normal laryngeal function measures than in unilateral vocal fold paresis patients with abnormal measures. These findings suggest that some patients with documented unilateral paresis and glottal incompetence can compensate for vocal fold weakness such that their acoustic and aerodynamic measures are normal.  相似文献

Students admitted to the solo singing education at the University of Music Dresden, Germany have been submitted to a detailed physical examination of a variety of factors with relevance to voice function since 1959. In the years 1959–1991, this scheme of examinations included X-ray profiles of the singers' vocal tracts. This material of 132 X-rays of voice professionals was used to investigate different laryngeal morphological measures and their relation to vocal fold length. Further, the study aimed to investigate if there are consistent anatomical differences between singers of different voice classifications. The study design used was a retrospective analysis. Vocal fold length could be measured in 29 of these singer subjects directly. These data showed a strong correlation with the anterior-posterior diameter of the subglottis and the trachea as well as with the distance from the anterior contour of the thyroid cartilage to the anterior contour of the spine. These relations were used in an attempt to predict the 132 singers' vocal fold lengths. The results revealed a clear covariation between predicted vocal fold length and voice classification. Anterior-posterior subglottic-tracheal diameter yielded mean vocal fold lengths of 14.9, 16.0, 16.6, 18.4, 19.5, and 20.9 mm for sopranos, mezzo-sopranos, altos, tenors, baritones, and basses, respectively. The data support the assumption that there are consistent anatomical laryngeal differences between singers of different voice classifications, which are of relevance to pitch range and timbre of the voice.  相似文献

This study investigated changes in maximum phonation time andacoustic and perceptual measures of voice following topical anesthesia and laryngeal endoscopy with the flexible endoscope. Forty-four females, aged 18–33 years and with normal voices, performed four vocal tasks: (a) 3-second /i/ prolongation, (b) maximum phonation time on /i/, (c) stepwise scale-singing, and (d) reading a standard passage. Subjects performed these tasks prior to anesthesia, after anesthesia, and again during laryngeal endoscopy. Voice samples were analyzed for jitter, shimmer, harmonic-to-noise ratio, speaking fundamental frequency, maximum phonational frequency range, maximum phonation time, harshness, and breathiness. Results demonstrated significant reductions in maximum phonational frequency range following anesthesia and, during laryngeal endoscopy, reductions in maximum phonation time and increases in speaking fundamental frequency, minimum fundamental frequency on scale-singing, and breathiness. Clinicians using laryngeal endoscopy for evaluation and management of vocal dysfunction should, therefore, consider the possible effects of these procedures on vocal functioning.  相似文献

Our objective is to study the vocal and laryngeal effect as well as the negative signs and sensations related to the voiced tongue vibration technique (VTVT), regarding the time of performance (from 0 to 7 minutes). Thirty adults (15 men and 15 women) with no vocal complaints nor laryngeal disorders were involved. All subjects underwent laryngostroboscopic and auditory perceptual analysis and answered about the existence of uncomfortable sensations that occurred during the exercise (1, 3, 5, and 7 minutes) and postexercise. For the auditory perceptual analysis, the female group presented better outcomes in the third minute of exercise, whereas in general the male group showed no modification because of performance time. Some men presented a significant change in the parameters involved from the fifth minute on. Men and women showed a gradual increase of undesirable sensations. It is extremely important that the performance time of the VTVT is properly prescribed to provide the expected results, without causing undue injuries to the vocal system. Therefore, we suggest this technique should be recommended for 3 and 5 minutes for women and men, respectively.  相似文献

This study examined speech breathing patterns during reading bywomen with bilateral vocal fold nodules judged as mildly dysphonic and by women without vocal nodules. Although it might be predictable that the speech breathing patterns of individuals with laryngeal dysfunction will differ from those without laryngeal dysfunction, there is a lack of empirical data to support such assumptions.The results of the current study indicated that glottal airflow was greaterduring reading for the women with vocal nodules and that a larger volume of air was expended both per syllable and per breath group during reading. The rate of speech did not significantly differ between the two groups of women. There was no significant difference for the average duration of the breath groups and no significant difference for the number of syllables spoken per breath group. Additionally, both groups of women demonstrated a similar pattern of inspiratory pause location during the reading. The results suggest that speech breathing patterns associated with dysphonia be examined independently to distinguish specifically the nature of the interaction between the laryngeal dysfunction and the speech breathing pattern. Certainly, more information on how the severity of a voice disorder influences speech breathing is necessary.  相似文献

This study evaluates the laryngoscopic findings and voice characteristics of male contact granuloma patients before and after voice therapy and at a follow-up about 9 years later. Pre- and posttherapy recordings as well as follow-up recordings were made for 19 granuloma patients. Pretherapy revealed the most salient perceptual voice characteristics were low pitch, monotony, and a high degree of vocal fry and hyperfunction. Interjudge reliability for these traits was high. Immediately following therapy the healed patients (n = 10) had a decrease in hyperfunction, vocal fry, and monotony, while the unhealed patients (n = 9) had an increase in hyperfunction and vocal fry decreased only marginally. Monotony decreased significantly in this group. As regards the acoustic analyses, no significant differences were found in mean fundamental frequency (F0) or perturbation. At the follow-up assessment 4 patients had granuloma while 15 had normal laryngeal status. Perceptually their voice characteristics resembled those pretherapy independently of the laryngeal findings. The results suggest that reduced hyperfunction and decreased vocal fry may create better circumstances for the healing process at the posterior glottis.  相似文献
