A combined analytical–numerical method based on a matching asymptotic algorithm is proposed for treating angular (sharp corner or wedge) singularities in the numerical solution of the Navier–Stokes equations. We adopt an asymptotic solution for the local flow around the angular points based on the Stokes flow approximation and a numerical solution for the global flow outside the singular regions using a finite‐volume method. The coefficients involved in the analytical solution are iteratively updated by matching both solutions in a small region where the Stokes flow approximation holds. Moreover, an error analysis is derived for this method, which serves as a guideline for the practical implementation. The present method is applied to treat the leading‐edge singularity of a semi‐infinite plate. The effect of various influencing factors related to the implementation are evaluated with the help of numerical experiments. The investigation showed that the accuracy of the numerical solution for the flow around the leading edge can be significantly improved with the present method. The results of the numerical experiments support the error analysis and show the desired properties of the new algorithm, i.e. accuracy, robustness and efficiency. Based on the numerical results for the leading‐edge singularity, the validity of various classical approximate models for the flow, such as the Stokes approximation, the inviscid flow model and the boundary layer theory of varying orders are examined. Although the methodology proposed was evaluated for the leading‐edge problem, it is generally applicable to all kinds of angular singularities and all kinds of finite‐discretization methods. The convective boundary-layer flow on an impermeable vertical surface in a fluid-saturated porous medium is considered where the flow results from the heat released by an exothermic catalytic reaction on the surface converting a reactive component within the convective fluid to an inert product. The reaction is modelled by first-order kinetics with an Arrhenius temperature dependence. Numerical solutions of the governing equations are obtained for a range of parameter values. These show, for large activation energies, that localized rapid changes in wall temperature and localized high reaction rates occur a little way from the leading edge. Asymptotic expansions, valid at large distances from the leading edge, are derived, the form that these expansions take is qualitatively different depending on whether or not reactant consumption is included in the model.

The effects of thermal radiation and thermal buoyancy on the steady, laminar boundary layer flow over a horizontal plate is investigated. The plate temperature is assumed to be inversely proportional to the square root of the distance from the leading edge. The set of similarity equations is solved numerically, and the solutions are given for some values of the radiation and buoyancy parameters for Prandtl number unity. It is found that dual solutions exist for negative values of the buoyancy parameter, up to certain critical values. Beyond these values, the solution does no longer exist. Moreover, it is found that there is no local heat transfer at the surface except in the singular point at the leading edge. The radiation parameter is found to increase the local Stanton number.

The mixed convection boundary-layer flow on a horizontal impermeable surface embedded in a saturated porous medium and driven by a local heat source is considered. Similarity solutions are obtained for specific outer flow variations and these are shown to have a solution only for parameter values greater than some critical value. When this is not the case the solution develops a singularity at a finite distance from the leading edge. The nature of this singularity is also discussed.

In calculating the flow about bodies with plane surfaces and sharp edges it is assumed that in the flow regimes with attached shock the latter may be defined in a section normal to the edge from the corresponding relations for the wedge [1, 2], The solution is taken corresponding to a weak shock on a wedge with supersonic velocity behind it. While in the plane case (wedge) this solution will be the only physically realizable solution, in the case of three-dimensional bodies, when there is a slip velocity along the leading edge, the realization of a second wedge solution with a strong shock is conceivable in the section normal to the leading edge if the total velocity behind the shock (with account for the slip velocity along the edge) is supersonic [3].Relative to the undisturbed stream velocity both of these solutions correspond to a weak shock. We present an example when the solution with a strong shock in the section normal to the edge is possible.

A study is made of the three-dimensional flow of a viscous gas around a flat plate with an inflection in the generator of the leading edge in the case of strong interaction between the exterior hypersonic flow and the boundary layer. Numerical solutions to the problem are obtained. It is shown that near points of inflection of the profile of the leading edge of a flat wing strong self-induced secondary flows can be formed together with associated local peaks of the heat fluxes and the friction.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 3, pp. 40–45, May–June, 1980.

This work is concerned with the design of a leading edge for a flat-plate model used to study laminar and transitional boundary layers. For this study, the flow over the complete boundary-layer model, including leading edge, flat section, and trailing-edge flap, is modeled. The effect of important geometrical features of the leading edge on the resulting pressure distribution, starting from the well-known symmetric modified super ellipse, is investigated. A minimal pressure gradient on the measurement side of the plate is achieved using an asymmetrical configuration of modified super ellipses, with a thickness ratio of 7/24. An aerodynamic shape optimization is performed to obtain a novel leading edge shape that greatly reduces the length of the non-zero pressure gradient region and the adverse pressure gradient region compared to geometries defined by ellipses. Wind tunnel testing is used to validate the numerical solutions.

Computational results for flow past a two‐dimensional model of a ram‐air parachute with leading edge cut are presented. Both laminar (Re=104) and turbulent (Re=106) flows are computed. A well‐proven stabilized finite element method (FEM), which has been applied to various flow problems earlier, is utilized to solve the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in the primitive variables formulation. The Baldwin–Lomax model is employed for turbulence closure. Turbulent flow computations past a Clarck‐Y airfoil without a leading edge cut, for α=7.5°, result in an attached flow. The leading edge cut causes the flow to become unsteady and leads to a significant loss in lift and an increase in drag. The flow inside the parafoil cell remains almost stagnant, resulting in a high value of pressure, which is responsible for giving the parafoil its shape. The value of the lift‐to‐drag ratio obtained with the present computations is in good agreement with those reported in the literature. The effect of the size and location of the leading edge cut is studied. It is found that the flow on the upper surface of the parafoil is fairly insensitive to the configuration of the cut. However, the flow quality on the lower surface improves as the leading edge cut becomes smaller. The lift‐to‐drag ratio for various configurations of the leading edge cut varies between 3.4 and 5.8. It is observed that even though the time histories of the aerodynamic coefficients from the laminar and turbulent flow computations are quite different, their time‐averaged values are quite similar. The effect of sound on the flow around plates with semicircular or square leading edges and square trailing edges located in a low turbulence open jet has been studied. In all circumstances the length of the leading edge separation bubbles associated with square leading edge plates was found to oscillate. When sound was applied to the flow around these plates, the leading edge shear layers reattached closer to the leading edge and the oscillations in bubble length occurred at the applied sound frequency, generating patches of concentrated vorticity in the boundary layers. These vorticity patches moved downstream near the plate surface and then beyond the trailing edge to form vortex cores in a street with a Strouhal number equal to the applied sound value. Sometimes these vortex streets are unstable and break down into streets with Strouhal numbers approaching those observed without sound. These effects of sound were not observed in the flow around plates with semicircular leading edges. Without sound, square leading edge plates of intermediate length did not shed regular vortex streets.

In this study the flow around a winged-seed in auto-rotation is characterized using direct numerical simulations (DNS) at Reynolds number in the range 80–240, based on the descent speed and a characteristic chord length. In this range, the flow is approximately steady when observed from a reference frame fixed to the seed. For all cases, the flow structure consists of a wing tip vortex which describes a helical path, a vortex shed behind the nut of the seed and a stable leading edge vortex above the wing surface which merges with the tip vortex. With increasing Reynolds number, the leading edge vortex becomes more intense and gets closer to the wing surface. The simulation results also show the formation of a spanwise flow on the upper surface of the wing, moving fluid towards the wing tip in a region downstream and beneath the leading edge vortex. This spanwise flow is rather weak inside the core of the leading edge vortex, and the analysis of the streamlines show a very weak transport of vorticity along the vortex for the cases under consideration. The analysis of the flow suggests that the stabilization of the leading edge vortex is mainly due to non-inertial accelerations, although viscous effects may contribute, specially at lower Re. Furthermore, the leading edge vortex has been characterized by analysing the flow variables averaged along cross-sections of the vortex. While some quantities, like the spanwise velocity or the pressure inside the vortex, are rather insensitive to the threshold used to define the leading edge vortex, the same is not true for the circulation of the vortex or its averaged spanwise vorticity, due to the viscous nature of the vortex. Finally, it is observed that the spanwise vorticity scales with the angular rotation of the seed for the different Re.
