Remarks on a parameter estimation for von Mises–Fisher distributions

We point out an error in the proof of the main result of the paper of Tanabe et al. (Comput Stat 22:145–157, 2007) concerning a parameter estimation for von Mises–Fisher distributions, we correct the proof of the main result and we present a short alternative proof.     

A correction to and improvement of ‘Strong approximations of some biometric estimates under random censorship’

Summary In the proof of the main result of the original paper there is an error. Instead of repairing that proof to get just the original result, at the critical spot we improve the proof and obtain a much better result. In particular, we approximate the product-limit and empirical cumulative hazard processes by suitable copies of the corresponding limiting Gaussian processes with rates of approximation that on appropriate fixed half lines reduce to the rates of Komlós, Major and Tusnády for the uncensored empirical process.

Convex combinations of nilpotent triangular norms

In this paper we deal with the open problem of convex combinations of continuous triangular norms stated by Alsina, Frank, and Schweizer [C. Alsina, M.J. Frank, B. Schweizer, Problems on associative functions, Aequationes Math. 66 (2003) 128-140, Problems 5 and 6]. They pose a question whether a non-trivial convex combination of triangular norms can ever be a triangular norm. The main result of this paper gives a negative answer to the question for any pair of continuous Archimedean triangular norms with different supports. With the help of this result we show that a non-trivial convex combination of nilpotent t-norms is never a t-norm. The main result also gives an alternative proof to the result presented by Ouyang and Fang [Y. Ouyang, J. Fang, Some observations about the convex combination of continuous triangular norms, Nonlinear Anal., 68 (11) (2008) 3382-3387, Theorem 3.1]. In proof of the main theorem we utilize the Reidmeister condition known from the web geometry.     

On a conjecture on the symmetric means

In this paper, we study some inequalities involving the symmetric means. The main result is a proof of a conjecture of Alzer et al.     

Global existence of weak solutions for a system of non-linear Boltzmann equations in semiconductor physics

In this paper we give a proof of the global existence of weak solutions for the semiconductor Boltzmann equation. This equation rules the evolution of the distribution function of carriers in the kinetic model of semiconductors. The main tool for the proof consists of a recent compactness result on velocity averages of solutions of transport equations. This result needs a L²-estimate of the electric field, which is obtained from the energy estimate, using the original regularization procedure of the problem, proposed in this paper.     

Monotonic solutions of a perturbed quadratic fractional integral equation

We present an existence theorem for monotonic solutions of a perturbed quadratic fractional integral equation in C[0,1]. The concept of a measure of noncompactness and a fixed point theorem due to Darbo are the main tools in carrying out our proof. Finally, we give an example for indicating the natural realizations of our abstract result presented in the paper.

A variational approach to difference equations

In this paper, we are concerned with the existence of at least three distinct solutions for nonlinear difference equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The proof of the main result is based on variational methods. We also provide an example in order to illustrate the main results.     

An existence result for gradient-type systems with a nondifferentiable term on unbounded strips

In this paper we study the existence of nontrivial solutions for a class of gradient-type systems on strip-like domains where the nonlinear term is not necessarily continuously differentiable. The proof of the main result is based on a nonsmooth version of the Mountain Pass Theorem which involves the Cerami compactness condition and on the Principle of Symmetric Criticality for locally Lipschitz functions.     

Positive solutions of Neumann problems with singularities

In this paper, we study the existence of positive solutions to second order singular equations with Neumann boundary conditions. The proof of the main result relies on a nonlinear alternative principle of Leray-Schauder, together with a truncation technique.

In this paper,we present a more simple and much shorter proof for the main result in the paper " An negative answer to a conjecture on the self-similar sets satisfying the open set condition",which was published in the journal Analysis in Theory and Applications in 2009.

Caflisch[1，2]在Euler方程存在光滑解的假设下，证明了Boltzmann方程存在一个解，且该解在平均自由程趋于零的极限下与Euler解一致．不幸的是Caflisch的证明有错误，其关键的引理6．1的结论太弱，不足以完成主要定理的证明．事实上，Caflisch在证明主要定理时，使用了比引理6．1更强的结论，但并未说明．本文改进了Caflisch的一个重要不等式；加强了原引理6．1的结论，并在修正了原主要定理证明过程中的其它错误后完成了它的证明．     

On a Result of Pointed Representations of finite Dimensional Simple Lie Algebras

There have been a great many of studies on the pointed representations of fi-nite-dimensional sanple Lie algebras.cf.[1][2]etc.In this paper we give a new proof of animpottant Lemma,and from this we derive our main result:Irreducible pointed modules of finite-dimesional simple Lie algebras are all Harish-Chandra modules.     

New proof of a characterization of geodetic graphs

In [3], the present author used a binary operation as a tool for characterizing geodetic graphs. In this paper a new proof of the main result of the paper cited above is presented. The new proof is shorter and simpler.     

A Sahlqvist theorem for distributive modal logic

In this paper we consider distributive modal logic, a setting in which we may add modalities, such as classical types of modalities as well as weak forms of negation, to the fragment of classical propositional logic given by conjunction, disjunction, true, and false. For these logics we define both algebraic semantics, in the form of distributive modal algebras, and relational semantics, in the form of ordered Kripke structures. The main contributions of this paper lie in extending the notion of Sahlqvist axioms to our generalized setting and proving both a correspondence and a canonicity result for distributive modal logics axiomatized by Sahlqvist axioms. Our proof of the correspondence result relies on a reduction to the classical case, but our canonicity proof departs from the traditional style and uses the newly extended algebraic theory of canonical extensions.     

The Monge problem in $ {\mathbb{R}^d} $: Variations on a theme

In a recent paper, the authors proved that, under natural assumptions on the first marginal, the Monge problem in \mathbbR^d {\mathbb{R}^d} for the cost given by a general norm admits a solution. Although the basic idea of the proof is simple, it involves some complex technical results. Here we will give a proof of the result in the simpler case of a uniformly convex norm, and we will also use very recent results by Ahmad, Kim, and McCann. This allows us to reduce the technical burdens while still giving the main ideas of the general proof. The proof of the density of the transport set in the particular case considered in this paper is original. Bibliography: 22 titles.     

Linear Time Algorithms for Parallel Machine Scheduling

This paper addresses linear time algorithms for parallel machine scheduling problems. We introduce a kind of threshold algorithms and discuss their main features. Three linear time threshold algorithm classes DT, PT and DTm are studied thoroughly. For all classes, we study their best possible algorithms among each class. We also present their application to several scheduling problems, The new algorithms are better than classical algorithms in time complexity and/or worst-case ratio. Computer-aided proof technique is used in the proof of main results, which greatly simplifies the proof and decreases case by case analysis.
