This paper presents the decomposition theorem of rectangular beams and indicates that the general state of stress of beams can be decomposed into two parts: the interior state and the Papkovich–Fadle state (shortened form the P–F state). The refined theory of beams is derived by using Papkovich–Neuber solution (shortened form the P–N solution) and Lur’e method without ad hoc assumptions. It is shown that the displacements and stresses of the beam can be represented by the angle of rotation and the deflection of the neutral surface. Based on the refined beam theory, the exact equations for the beam without transverse surface loadings are derived and consist of two governing differential equations: the fourth-order equation and the transcendental equation. It is then proved that the refined beam theory and the decomposition beam theorem are equivalent, i.e., the fourth-order equation and the transcendental equation are equivalent to the interior state and the P–F state, respectively.

The large deflections of tapered functionally graded beams subjected to end forces are studied by using the finite element method. The material properties of the beams are assumed to vary through the thickness direction according to a power law distribution. A first order shear deformable beam element employed the exact polynomials to interpolate the transverse displacement and rotation, is formulated in the context of the co-rotational approach. The large deflection response of the beams is computed by using the arc-length control algorithm in combination with the Newton–Raphson iterative method. The numerical results show that the formulated element is capable to assess accurately the response of the beams by using just several elements. A parametric study is given to examine the influence of the material non-homogeneity, taper ratio as well as the aspect ratio on the large deflection behaviour of the beams.

Displacement field based on higher order shear deformation theory is implemented to study the static behavior of functionally graded metal–ceramic (FGM) beams under ambient temperature. FGM beams with variation of volume fraction of metal or ceramic based on power law exponent are considered. Using the principle of stationary potential energy, the finite element form of static equilibrium equation for FGM beam is presented. Two stiffness matrices are thus derived so that one among them will reflect the influence of rotation of the normal and the other shear rotation. Numerical results on the transverse deflection, axial and shear stresses in a moderately thick FGM beam under uniform distributed load for clamped–clamped and simply supported boundary conditions are discussed in depth. The effect of power law exponent for various combination of metal–ceramic FGM beam on the deflection and stresses are also commented. The studies reveal that, depending on whether the loading is on the ceramic rich face or metal rich face of the beam, the static deflection and the static stresses in the beam do not remain the same.

England (2006) [13] proposed a novel method to study the bending of isotropic functionally graded plates subject to transverse biharmonic loads. His method is extended here to functionally graded plates with materials characterizing transverse isotropy. Using the complex variable method, the governing equations of three plate displacements appearing in the expansions of displacement field are formulated based on the three-dimensional theory of elasticity for a transverse load satisfying the biharmonic equation. The solution may be expressed in terms of four analytic functions of the complex variable, in which the unknown constants can be determined from the boundary conditions similar to that in the classical plate theory. The elasticity solutions of an FGM rectangular plate with opposite edges simply supported under 12 types of biharmonic polynomial loads are derived as appropriate sums of the general and particular solutions of the governing equations. A comparison of the present results for a uniform load with existing solutions is made and good agreement is observed. The influence of boundary conditions, material inhomogeneity, and thickness to length ratio on the plate deflection and stresses for the load x2yq are studied numerically.

A finite element model is developed to study the large-amplitude free vibrations of generally-layered laminated composite beams. The Poisson effect, which is often neglected, is included in the laminated beam constitutive equation. The large deformation is accounted for by using von Karman strains and the transverse shear deformation is incorporated using a higher order theory. The beam element has eight degrees of freedom with the inplane displacement, transverse displacement, bending slope and bending rotation as the variables at each node. The direct iteration method is used to solve the nonlinear equations which are evaluated at the point of reversal of motion. The influence of boundary conditions, beam geometries, Poisson effect, and ply orientations on the nonlinear frequencies and mode shapes are demonstrated.

The large-amplitude free vibration analysis of functionally graded beams is investigated by means of a finite element formulation. The Von-Karman type nonlinear strain–displacement relationships are employed where the ends of the beam are constrained to move axially. The effects of the transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia are included based upon the Timoshenko beam theory. The material properties are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction according to the power-law distribution. A statically exact beam element which devoid the shear locking effect with displacement fields based on the first order shear deformation theory is used to study the geometric nonlinear effects on the vibrational characteristics of functionally graded beams. The finite element method is employed to discretize the nonlinear governing equations, which are then solved by the direct numerical integration technique in order to obtain the nonlinear vibration frequencies of functionally graded beams with different boundary conditions. The influences of power-law exponent, vibration amplitude, beam geometrical parameters and end supports on the free vibration frequencies are studied. The present numerical results compare very well with the results available from the literature where possible. Some new results for the nonlinear natural frequencies are presented in both tabular and graphical forms which can be used for future references.

In this article, large deflection and rotation of a nonlinear beam subjected to a coplanar follower static loading is studied. It is assumed that the angle of inclination of the force with respect to the deformed axis of the beam remains unchanged during deformation. The governing equation of this problem is solved analytically for the first time using a new kind of analytic technique for nonlinear problems, namely, the homotopy analysis method (HAM). The present solution can be used in wide range of load and length for beams under large deformations. The results obtained from HAM are compared with those results obtained by fourth order Range Kutta method. Finally, the load‐displacement characteristics of a uniform cantilever under a follower force normal to the deformed beam axis are presented. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, the static response is presented for a simply supported functionally graded hybrid beam subjected to a transverse uniform load. Material properties of the beam are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. By varying the fiber volume fraction within a symmetric laminated beam and combining two fiber types to create a hybrid functionally graded material (FGM) can offer desirable increases in axial and bending stiffness. The equations governing the hybrid FGM beams are determined using the principle of virtual work (PVW) arising from the higher order shear deformation theories. Numerical results on the transverse deflection, axial and shear stresses in a moderately thick hybrid FGM beam under uniform distributed load are discussed in depth. The effect of power-law exponent on the deflection and stresses are also commented.

A simple C0 isoparametric finite element formulation based on a set of higher-order displacement models for the analysis of symmetric and asymmetric multilayered composite and sandwich beams subjected to sinusoidal loading is presented. These theories do not require the usual shear correction coefficients which are generally associated with the Timoshenko theory. The four-noded Lagrangian cubic element with kinematic models having four, five and six degrees of freedom per node is used. A computer algorithm is developed which incorporates realistic prediction of transverse interlaminar stresses from equilibrium equations. By comparing the results obtained with the elasticity solution and the CPT (classical laminated plate theory) it is shown that the present higher-order theories give a much better approximation to the behaviour of laminated composite beams, both thick and thin. In addition numerical results for unsymmetric sandwich beams are presented which may serve as benchmark for future investigations.

As the deflection of a buried beam subjected to ground settlement is not consistent with the ground displacement, an analytical model is introduced in this study for a buried beam on a tensionless foundation subjected to differential settlement. The buried beam is divided into three segments: the left semi-infinite foundation beam, the right semi-infinite foundation beam, and the middle finite beam separated from the ground. Based on the theory of semi-infinite foundation beams, equations for the response of left and right semi-infinite segment beams are given. Explicit equations are proposed for the response of the middle segment beam; these are combined with the continuous conditions at the segment junctions, and the physical implications of the equation parameters are illustrated. The analytical approach taken in this study is then compared with, and verified against, the methods used in the existing literature. The mechanical state of a buried beam subjected to ground settlement is closely related to the foundation stiffness factor, the flexural stiffness of the beam, the characteristics of the ground settlement, and the vertical earth pressure. When the deformation coefficient is relatively large or ground settlement is relatively narrow, the buried beam may be in the partial contacting state. With an increase in the width and amplitude of ground settlement curve, the foundation stiffness factor, and the different vertical earth pressure between the ground settlement and non-settlement areas, the bending moment and shearing force of buried beams increase.

Analysis of deformation and bending moment distributions along sections of the bottom plate of a large unanchored cylindrical liquid storage tank with appreciable out-of-plane localized differential edge settlement is considered. The analysis uses approximate simple slender beam bending theory to model localized edge settlements of the plate and takes into account the effects of foundation compliance, initial settlement shape, shell and hydrostatic loadings and the shell-bottom plate junction stiffness. The obtained model is solved, in the elastic range, using a combined analytical–numerical procedure for the deflection and bending moment distributions along the beam. The obtained approximate solutions were displayed graphically for selected values of system parameters: edge settlement amplitude, plate thickness, foundation stiffness, and hydrostatic load. The maximum allowable edge displacement amplitudes based on the plate yielding stress predicted by the present study are compared for the selected values of system parameters with those recommended in the API standard 653.

In this paper, effect of random variation in system properties on bending response of geometrically linear laminated composite plates subjected to transverse uniform lateral pressure and thermal loading is examined. System parameters such as the lamina material properties, expansion of thermal coefficients, lamina plate thickness and lateral load are modeled as basic random variables. The basic formulation is based on higher order shear deformation theory to model the system behavior of the composite plate. A C0 finite element method in conjunction with the first order perturbation technique procedure developed earlier by authors for the plate subjected to lateral loading is employed to obtain the second order response statistics (mean and variance) of the transverse deflection of the plate. Typical numerical results for the second order statistics of the transverse central deflection of geometrically linear composite plates with temperature independent and dependent material properties subjected to uniform temperature and combination of uniform and linearly varying temperature distribution are obtained for various combinations of geometric parameters, uniform lateral pressures, staking sequences and boundary conditions. The performance of the stochastic laminated composite model is demonstrated through comparison of mean transverse central deflection with those results available in literature and standard deviation of the deflection with an independent Monte Carlo simulation.

By using mathematical similarity and load equivalence between the governing equations, bending solutions of FGM Timoshenko beams are derived analytically in terms of the homogenous Euler–Bernoulli beams. The deflection, rotational angle, bending moment and shear force of FGM Timoshenko beams are expressed in terms of the deflection of the corresponding homogenous Euler–Bernoulli beams with the same geometry, the same loadings and end constraints. Consequently, solutions of bending of the FGM Timoshenko beams are simplified as the calculation of the transition coefficients which can be easily determined by the variation law of the gradient of the material properties and the geometry of the beams if the solutions of corresponding Euler–Bernoulli beam are known. As examples, solutions are given for the FGM Timoshenko beams under S–S, C–C, C–F and C–S end constraints and arbitrary transverse loadings to illustrate the use of this approach. These analytical solutions can be as benchmarks in the further investigations of behaviors of FGM beams.

In this article, homotopy analysis method (HAM) is employed to investigate non-linear large deformation of Euler–Bernoulli beams subjected to an arbitrary distributed load. Constitutive equations of the problem are obtained. It is assumed that the length of the beam remains constant after applying external loads. Different auxiliary parameters and functions of the HAM and the extra auxiliary parameter, which is applied to initial guess of the solution, are employed to procure better convergence rate of the solution. The results of the solution are obtained for two different examples including constant cross sectional beam subjected to constant distributed load and periodic distributed load. Special base functions, orthogonal polynomials e.g. Chebyshev expansion, are employed as a tool to improve the convergence of the solution. The general solution, presented in this paper, can be used to attain the solution of the beam under arbitrary distributed load and flexural stiffness. Ultimately, it is shown that small deformation theory overestimates different quantities such as bending moment, shear force, etc. for large deflection of the beams in comparison with large deformation theory. Finally, it is concluded that solution of small deformation theory is far from reality for large deflection of straight Euler–Bernoulli beams.

This work addresses a static analysis of functionally graded material (FGM) plates using higher order shear deformation theory. In the theory the transverse shear stresses are represented as quadratic through the thickness and hence it requires no shear correction factor. The material property gradient is assumed to vary in the thickness direction. Mori and Tanaka theory (1973) [1] is used to represent the material property of FGM plate at any point. The thermal gradient across the plate thickness is represented accurately by utilizing the thermal properties of the constituent materials. Results have been obtained by employing a C° continuous isoparametric Lagrangian finite element with seven degrees of freedom for each node. The convergence and comparison studies are presented and effects of the different material composition and the plate geometry (side-thickness, side–side) on deflection and temperature are investigated. Effect of skew angle on deflection and axial stress of the plate is also studied. Effects of material constant n on deflection and the temperature distribution are also discussed in detail.
