Recently, self-assembled lyotropic liquid crystals (LLCs) of lipids and water have attracted the attention of both scientific and applied research communities, due to their remarkable structural complexity and practical potential in diverse applications. The phase behavior of mixtures of glycerol monooleate (monoolein, GMO) was particularly well studied due to the potential utilization of these systems in drug delivery systems, food products, and encapsulation and crystallization of proteins. Among the studied lyotropic mesophases, reverse hexagonal LLC (H(II)) of monoolein/water were not widely subjected to practical applications since these were stable only at elevated temperatures. Lately, we obtained stable H(II) mesophases at room temperature by incorporating triacylglycerol (TAG) molecules into the GMO/water mixtures and explored the physical properties of these structures. The present feature article summarizes recent systematic efforts in our laboratory to utilize the H(II) mesophases for solubilization, and potential release and crystallization of biomacromolecules. Such a concept was demonstrated in the case of two therapeutic peptides-cyclosporin A (CSA) and desmopressin, as well as RALA peptide, which is a model skin penetration enhancer, and eventually a larger macromolecule-lysozyme (LSZ). In the course of the study we tried to elucidate relationships between the different levels of organization of LLCs (from the microstructural level, through mesoscale, to macroscopic level) and find feasible correlations between them. Since the structural properties of the mesophase systems are a key factor in drug release applications, we investigated the effects of these guest molecules on their conformations and the way these molecules partition within the domains of the mesophases. The examined H(II) mesophases exhibited great potential as transdermal delivery vehicles for bioactive peptides, enabling tuning the release properties according to their chemical composition and physical properties. Furthermore, we showed a promising opportunity for crystallization of CSA and LSZ in single crystal form as model biomacromolecules for crystallographic structure determination. The main outcomes of our research demonstrated that control of the physical properties of hexagonal LLC on different length scales is key for rational design of these systems as delivery vehicles and crystallization medium for biomacromolecules.  相似文献

Hydrated CaCl2, LiI, and MgCl2 salts induce self‐assembly in nonionic surfactants (such as C12H25(OCH2CH2)10OH) to form lyotropic liquid‐crystalline (LLC) mesophases that undergo a phase transition to a new type of soft mesocrystal (SMC) under ambient conditions. The SMC samples can be obtained by aging the LLC samples, which were prepared as thin films by spin‐coating, dip‐coating, or drop‐casting of a clear homogenized solution of water, salt, and surfactant over a substrate surface. The LLC mesophase exists up to a salt/surfactant mole ratio of 8, 10, and 4 (corresponding to 59, 68, and 40 wt % salt/surfactant) in the CaCl2, LiI, and MgCl2 mesophases, respectively. The SMC phase can transform back to a LLC mesophase at a higher relative humidity. The phase transformations have been monitored using powder X‐ray diffraction (PXRD), polarized optical microscopy (POM), and FTIR techniques. The LLC mesophases only diffract at small angles, but the SMCs diffract at both small and wide angles. The broad surfactant features in the FTIR spectra of the LLC mesophases become sharp and well resolved upon SMC formation. The unit cell of the mesophases expands upon SMC transformation, in which the expansion is largest in the MgCl2 and smallest in the CaCl2 systems. The POM images of the SMCs display birefringent textures with well‐defined edges, similar to crystals. However, the surface of the crystals is highly patterned, like buckling patterns, which indicates that these crystals are quite soft. This unusual phase behavior could be beneficial in designing new soft materials in the fields of phase‐changing materials and mesostructured materials, and it demonstrates the richness of the phase behavior in the salt–surfactant mesophases.  相似文献

In an attempt to form HII mesophases at room temperature we prepared lyotropic liquid crystals with two surfactants of the same lipophilic tails (glycerol monooleate, GMO, and oleyl lactate, OL) but differing in the size and charge of the headgroups.Increasing OL concentration significantly affected the hydration of the headgroups and subsequently the lipids packing. At low OL content the cubic mesophase was formed, while at higher OL contents the formation of hexagonal mesophase was favored. It was assumed that OL competed on the water binding, tuning the headgroups’ curvature and the packing parameter inducing the formation of reverse hexagonal mesophase. It was detected that cubic mesophase transformed upon heating to hexagonal structures. The hexagonal mesophases, which were formed both immediately after preparation and after aging, remained stable at elevated temperatures.α-Chymotrypsinogen was solubilized into the obtained LLCs at relatively high concentration (up to 1 wt%). The lattice parameter of the host LLCs exhibited a decrease as a function of the protein content. This process was assigned to partial dehydration of the GMO polar moieties in favor to CTA hydration.Generally speaking, the present study indicated that adding anionic to nonionic lipid is highly beneficial to gain additional compositional and structural characteristics of LLCs.  相似文献

Transmission electron microscopy of freeze fractured and replicated samples (TEM) and polarizing light microscopy (PLM) are used to investigate the defect structures of the thermotropic and lyotropic mesophases of the non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug fenoprofen sodium and of the thermotropic mesophase of the nonionic surfactant sucrose oleate (O1570). All mesophases have a layered, smectic structure. The thermotropic liquid crystal of feno-profen sodium is an interdigitated smectic A phase (smectic Ad) having the highest viscosity of the investigated samples. The thermotropic mesophase of the sugar ester is also of the type smectic A, likely to be of subtype smectic A2 (bilayered smectic structure). The lyotropic mesophase is of lamellar liquid crystalline nature and has a much lower viscosity than the thermotropic mesophases. In the PLM the lyotropic fenoprofen mesophase has a strong tendency to form a pseudoisotropic texture, indicating a strong tendency to form undisturbed layered structures. Other textures exhibited in the PLM are fan-shaped texture and maltese-cross texture. Confocal domains, cylinders, pits and peaks as well as screw dislocations are found in great number in the TEM. However, no greater regions of undisturbed lamellar arrangement in the lyotropic mesophase could be detected. The only texture of the thermotropic fenoprofen mesophase visible in the PLM is the fan-shaped texture, indicating confocal domains as predominant structural elements. However, no confocal domains (tori or Dupin cyclides) are found in the TEM. In the PLM the sugar–ester mesophase exhibited a fan-shaped texture, maltese crosses and oily streaks as dominant textures. In the TEM only a few +π and −π disclinations and imperfect confocal domains could be detected. The discrepancies in the appearance of defect structures and textures between the mesophases as well as the discrepancies in the findings in the PLM and in the TEM investigations are caused by the different sample preparation and the different viscosities of the mesophases. Crystallization of proteins is important for fundamental studies and biopharmaceutical development but remains largely an empirical science. Here, we report the use of organic salts that can form a class of unusual nonamphiphilic lyotropic liquid crystals to crystallize the protein lysozyme. Certain nonamphiphilic organic molecules with fused aromatic rings and two charges can assemble into stable thread-like noncovalent polymers that may further form liquid crystal phases in water, traditionally termed chromonic liquid crystals. Using five of these mesogenic molecules as additives to induce protein crystallization, we discover that molecules that can form liquid crystal phases in water are highly effective at inducing the crystal formation of lysozyme, even at concentrations significantly lower than that required for forming liquid crystal phases. This result reveals an example of inducing protein crystallization by the molecular assembly of the additives, and is consistent with a new mechanism by which the strong hydration of an assembly process provides a gradual means to compete for the water molecules to enable solvated proteins to form crystals.  相似文献

The stability of a variety of lyotropic liquid crystals formed by a number of polyoxyethylene nonionic surfactants in the room-temperature ionic liquid ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) is surveyed and reported. The pattern of self-assembly behaviour and mesophase formation is strikingly similar to that observed in water, even including the existence of a lower consolute boundary or cloud point. The only quantitative difference from water is that longer alkyl chains are necessary to drive the formation of liquid crystalline mesophases in EAN, suggesting that a rich pattern of "solvophobic" self-assembly should exist in this solvent.  相似文献

This study highlights the effects of amphiphile chain length and counter ions on the self-assembly and dielectric behaviour of non-aqueous lyotropic liquid crystals. Two-dimensional hexagonal mesophase is seen for short-chain length sodium dodecyl sulphate, while lamellar and multiwall lamellar mesophases are noticed for long-chain length cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monolaurate amphiphiles in the non-aqueous domains of ethylene glycol. A strong influence of amphiphile counter ions is seen on static dielectric constant, loss factor, relaxation frequency and relaxation time of these lyotropic mixtures. Refractive indices of these lyotropic phases are also highlighted.  相似文献

The mixture of two surfactants (C12EO10-CTAB and C12EO10-SDS) forms lyotropic liquid-crystalline (LLC) mesophases with [Zn(H2O)6](NO3)2 in the presence of a minimum concentration of 1.75 H2O per C12EO10. The metal ion/C12EO10 mole ratio can be increased up to 8.0, which is a record high metal ion density in an LLC mesophase. The metal ion concentration can be increased in the medium by increasing the CTAB/C12EO10 or SDS/C12EO10 mole ratio at the expense of the stability of the LLC mesophase. The structure and some thermal properties of the new mesophase have been investigated using XRD, POM, FTIR, and Raman techniques.  相似文献

This small angle X-ray scattering study of the lyotropic phases in the binary tetramethylammonium perfluorodecanoate/water system shows that there are no classical lyotropic mesophases present. Much of the liquid crystal region is taken up with a random mesh intermediate phase, Mh1(0) and a phase with rhombohedral symmetry which is probably a rhombohedral mesh intermediate phase, Mh1(R3m). This behaviour is unusual since previously these mesh phases have been associated with hydrocarbon surfactants or diblock copolymer melts. All the mesophases found have non-uniform interfacial curvature and a sufficiently strong inter-layer interaction to ensure the long range correlation of structures in some phases.  相似文献

Mesophases II
In the continuation of a review of the classification, properties and applications of mesophases, the general features of thermodynamic data of thermotropic liquid–crystalline phase transitions are surveyed. The orientation of molecules in liquid–crystalline mesophases is discussed in relation to the electrical properties. Some applications of mesophases are outlined. After surveys of both the structural classes of lyotropic mesophases and the properties of plastic crystals in cubic phases, the thermodynamic, structural and other properties of all mesophases-are summarily considered in relation to the present state of the knowledge in this field.  相似文献

The kinetics of phase transitions including a transition between mesophases were studied for a main-chain thermotropic polyester by means of DSC and depolarizing transmittance techniques. The isothermal process of these transitions was found to be described by the Avrami equation to high conversions. The Avrami exponents n are about 2,4, 5.3 and 2.2 for liquid crystallization, transition between mesophases and crystallization from mesophase respectively. The liquid crystallization from isotropic liquid phase occurs at very low undercoolings with high transformation rate. This behavior is explained as the results of the smaller value of the surface free energy for mesophase than that for crystallites which is evidenced by the very weak temperature dependence of liquid crystallization rate.  相似文献

The triangular phase diagram of the system dodecyltri-methylammonium hydroxide (DTAOH)–dodecanephosphonic acid (H2DP)–water was studied by several techniques. The DTAOH-rich zone could not be studied because DTAOH decomposed when it was dried. Pure H2DP only forms lamellar mesophases with water. The inclusion of DTAOH in the system produces the appearance of cubic and hexagonal mesophases. The gradual increase in DTAOH proportion lead to the gradual reduction in the existence of the lamellar mesophase domain, and increase of the hexagonal liquid crystal domain. At high DTAOH content, the lamellar mesophase disappeared. This behavior was explained by the gradual destruction of the hydrogen-bonded structure in the polar headgroup layer of liquid crystal aggregates. H2DP-rich anhydrous crystals were triclinic. The formation of a nematic chromonic mesophase in aqueous solutions of quaternized poly(ethylene imine) has been found using polythermal polarization microscopy. The reaction kinetics of O-(para-nitrophenyl) O,O-dimethyl thiophosphate hydrolysis has been studied by spectrophotometry, and a comparative analysis of the effects of lyotropic liquid crystals constructed as hexagonal and chromonic mesophases on this kinetics has been performed. It has been found that the hydrolysis of the substrate in a nematic chromonic mesophase is accelerated due to the concentration of the reactants.  相似文献

We demonstrate the dual magnetic and light responsive nature of hybrid mesophases constituted by Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticles dispersed in lipid-based lyotropic liquid crystals (LC). When subjected to an external magnetic field in the mesophase isotropic state, the nanoparticles aggregate and orient along the magnetic field direction, and upon cooling the system through the disorder-order transition the aggregates drive the orientation of the mesophase via heterogeneous nucleation; furthermore, order-disorder transitions in the lipidic mesophase can be triggered by Fe(3)O(4)-induced photothermal effect under visible light exposure. Both the orientational order and the photothermal effect of the hybrid mesophase can be tuned by the nanoparticle content, offering a general route for controlled assembly of complex fluids with combined magnetic and light responsiveness.  相似文献

N,N'-diundecenoylbenzene-1,4-diamine (DUBDA), an amide with long symmetric aliphatic chains, is shown to exhibit monotropic thermotropic liquid crystallinity as well as lyotropic liquid crystallinity in highly polar solvents on the basis of differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, temperature-variable FTIR, and X-ray diffraction analysis. There are obvious differences between the two mesophases in terms of molecular stacking and driving force, although the two mesophases originate from the same molecule. In addition, a possible lamellar model for the lyotropic mesophase is proposed.  相似文献

Derivatives of relatively electron rich 1,5-dialkoxynaphthalene (Dan) donors and relatively electron deficient 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic diimide (Ndi) acceptors have been exploited in the folding and self-assembly of a variety of complex molecular systems in solution. Here, we report the use of Dan and Ndi derivatives to direct assembly of extended columns with alternating face-centered stacked structure in the solid state. A variety of 1:1 Dan:Ndi mixtures produced mesophases that were found to be stable over temperature ranges extending up to 110 degrees C. Analysis of these mesophases indicates mixtures with soft/plastic crystal phases and a few mixtures with the thermodynamic properties of true liquid crystals, all composed of alternating donor-acceptor columns within. Importantly, a correspondence was found between the clearing and crystallization points of the mesophase mixtures and the melting/clearing points of the component Ndi and Dan units, respectively. This correspondence enables the predictable tuning of mesophase phase transition temperatures. The study of sterically hindered derivatives led to a set of mixtures in which a dramatic and sudden color change (deep red to yellow) was observed upon crystallization of the mesophase due to a phase separation of the component donor and acceptor units.  相似文献

The correlation of molecular diffusion coefficients obtained via a novel two-dimensional pulsed gradient spin-echo (PGSE) NMR method has been shown to reveal detailed structural information on the mesophases of lyotropic liquid crystals. A four-component system containing both nonionic (pentaethylene glycol monododecyl ether) and ionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate) surfactants, water, and decane was prepared and left to equilibrate. In the temperature region around 309 K, a lamellar mesophase forms. A two-dimensional Laplace inverse transformation was performed on the (gammadeltag)2(delta - delta/3) domain data to separate any multiexponential behavior that resulted from local anisotropy. The results of the double PGSE experiment with contiguous gradient pulse pairs, applied both collinearly and orthogonally, clearly show the presence of local anisotropic self-diffusion of the water molecules and suggest a preferred orientation of the lamellae. Information about defects/domain size was obtained by the insertion of a mixing time (t(m)') between the successive gradient pulse pairs. This work highlights the value of this new NMR correlation method in the study of surfactant systems.  相似文献

Ionic liquid crystals based on congruent ion pairs composed of mesogenic cations and anions of similar shape provide an attractive tool for the tuning of mesophase properties. Here, the effect of the number and symmetry of lipophilic side chains and the type of head group on the phase type and thermal mesophase properties was probed by the synthesis and investigation of two series of novel guanidinium and imidazolium sulphonates and compared with the corresponding iodides. Their mesomorphic properties were examined via differential scanning calorimetry, optical polarising microscopy and X-ray diffraction. While derivatives bearing only one alkoxy chain in either cation or anion with up to three alkoxy chains in total within the ion pairs display smectic A mesophases, hexagonal columnar mesophases were observed for all other compounds with four or five alkoxy chains totally irrespective of the head group. However, with increasing steric bulk, i.e. with a total of six alkoxy chains, the symmetry of the aryl moiety in the anion as well as the type of head group becomes relevant, resulting in hexagonal columnar or plastic phases for guanidinium sulphonates with symmetrical anions, while those with unsymmetrical anions were non-mesomorphic. In contrast, the corresponding imidazolium sulphonates displayed cubic phases for the combinations of symmetrical cation/symmetrical anion and symmetrical cation/unsymmetrical anion. If both ions are unsymmetrically substituted, the imidazolium sulphonate displayed a hexagonal columnar phase. The results further demonstrate the utility of the congruent ion pairs for tailor-made ionic liquid crystals.  相似文献
