Depending on the relative positions of voids and on the loading conditions, shear loading components can play an important role in the void coalescence process leading to ductile fracture. Yet, most void coalescence criteria including the original criterion of Thomason, and its various extensions/improvements, take only normal loads into account and neglect the contribution from shear loads to coalescence. Shear can affect both the stress/strain at the onset of coalescence and the direction of deformation localization. In this paper, first, the predictive capabilities of different coalescence criteria without shear effect are critically assessed and the expressions involved in the original Thomason criterion are fine-tuned by comparing with 3D finite element calculations performed on a unit cell containing a spheroidal void. Then, the improved Thomason criterion is theoretically extended—by using limit load analysis—to incorporate the effect of shear. The predictions of this new coalescence criterion are in good agreement with the results produced by 3D finite element calculations, for both loadings involving or not a shear component.  相似文献

The effect of void size on void growth in single crystals with uniformly distributed cylindrical voids is studied numerically using a finite deformation strain gradient crystal plasticity theory with an intrinsic length parameter. A plane strain cell model is analyzed for a single crystal with three in-plane slip systems. It is observed that small voids allow much larger overall stress levels than larger voids for all the stress triaxialities considered. The amount of void growth is found to be suppressed for smaller voids at low stress triaxialities. Significant differences are observed in the distribution of slips and on the shape of the deformed voids for different void sizes. Furthermore, the orientation of the crystalline lattice is found to have a pronounced effect on the results, especially for the smaller void sizes.

Void growth and coalescence in fcc single crystals were studied using crystal plasticity under uniaxial and biaxial loading conditions and various orientations of the crystalline lattice. A 2D plane strain unit cell with one and two cylindrical voids was employed using three-dimensional 12 potentially active slip systems. The results were compared to five representative orientations of the tensile axis on the stereographic triangle. For uniaxial tension conditions, the void volume fraction increase under the applied load is strongly dependent on the crystallographic orientation with respect to the tensile axis. For some orientations of the tensile axis, such as [1 0 0] or [1 1 0], the voids exhibited a growth rate twice as fast compared with other orientations ([1 0 0], [2 1 1]). Void growth and coalescence simulations under uniaxial loading indicated that during deformation along some orientations with asymmetry of the slip systems, the voids experienced rotation and shape distortion, due mainly to lattice reorientation. Coalescence effects are shown to diminish the influence of lattice orientation on the void volume fraction increase, but noteworthy differences are still present. Under biaxial loading conditions, practically all differences in the void volume fraction for different orientations of the tensile axes during void growth vanish. These results lead to the conclusion that at microstructural length scales in regions under intense biaxiality/triaxiality conditions, such as crack tip or notched regions, the plastic anisotropy due to the initial lattice orientation has only a minor role in influencing the void growth rate. In such situations, void growth and coalescence are mainly determined by the stress triaxiality, the magnitude of accumulated strain, and the spatial localization of such plastic strains.  相似文献

Recent experimental evidence points to limitations in characterizing the critical strain in ductile fracture solely on the basis of stress triaxiality. A second measure of stress state, such as the Lode parameter, is required to discriminate between axisymmetric and shear-dominated stress states. This is brought into the sharpest relief by the fact that many structural metals have a fracture strain in shear, at zero stress triaxiality, that can be well below fracture strains under axisymmetric stressing at significantly higher triaxiality. Moreover, recent theoretical studies of void growth reveal that triaxiality alone is insufficient to characterize important growth and coalescence features. As currently formulated, the Gurson Model of metal plasticity predicts no damage change with strain under zero mean stress, except when voids are nucleated. Consequently, the model excludes shear softening due to void distortion and inter-void linking. As it stands, the model effectively excludes the possibility of shear localization and fracture under conditions of low triaxiality if void nucleation is not invoked. In this paper, an extension of the Gurson model is proposed that incorporates damage growth under low triaxiality straining for shear-dominated states. The extension retains the isotropy of the original Gurson Model by making use of the third invariant of stress to distinguish shear dominated states. The importance of the extension is illustrated by a study of shear localization over the complete range of applied stress states, clarifying recently reported experimental trends. The extension opens the possibility for computational fracture approaches based on the Gurson Model to be extended to shear-dominated failures such as projectile penetration and shear-off phenomena under impulsive loadings.  相似文献

A micromechanics model based on the theoretical framework of plastic localization into a band introduced by Rice is developed. The model consists of a planar band with a square array of equally sized cells, with a spherical void located in the centre of each cell. The periodic arrangement of the cells allows the study of a single unit cell for which fully periodic boundary conditions are applied. The micromechanics model is applied to analyze failure by ductile rupture in experiments on double notched tube specimens subjected to combined tension and torsion carried out by the present authors. The stress state is characterized in terms of the stress triaxiality and the Lode parameter. Two rupture mechanisms can be identified, void coalescence by internal necking at high triaxiality and void coalescence by internal shearing at low triaxiality. For the internal necking mechanism, failure is assumed to occur when the deformation localizes into a planar band and is closely associated with extensive void growth until impingement of voids. For the internal shearing mechanism, a simple criterion based on the attainment of a critical value of shear deformation is utilized. The two failure criteria capture the transition between the two rupture mechanisms successfully and are in good agreement with the experimental result.  相似文献

In this paper void coalescence is regarded as the result of localization of plastic flow between enlarged voids. We obtain the failure criterion for a representative material volume (RMV) in terms of the macroscopic equivalent strain (Ec) as a function of the stress triaxiality parameter (T) and the Lode angle (θ) by conducting systematic finite element analyses of the void-containing RMV subjected to different macroscopic stress states. A series of parameter studies are conducted to examine the effects of the initial shape and volume fraction of the primary void and nucleation, growth, and coalescence of secondary voids on the predicted failure surface Ec(T, θ). As an application, a numerical approach is proposed to predict ductile crack growth in thin panels of a 2024-T3 aluminum alloy, where a porous plasticity model is used to describe the void growth process and the expression for Ec is calibrated using experimental data. The calibrated computational model is applied to predict crack extension in fracture specimens having various initial crack configurations and the numerical predictions agree very well with experimental measurements.  相似文献

State of the art ductile fracture models often rely on simple power laws to describe the strain hardening of the matrix material. Power laws do not distinguish between the two main stages of hardening observed in polycrystals, referred to as stage III and stage IV hardening, and which emerge from the evolution of the dislocation substructure. The aim of this study is to couple a physics based strain hardening law including these two stages to a micromechanics based ductile damage model. One of the main motivations is that, the stage IV constant hardening rate stage, occurring only at large strain, will be attained in most ductile failure problems if not at the overall level of deformation, at least locally around the growing voids. Furthermore, proper modelling of the stage III involving dislocation storage and recovery terms and the transition to stage IV provides a link with the underlying physical mechanisms of deformation and with the microstructure. First, in order to evaluate the effects of the stage III and stage IV hardening on void growth and coalescence, an extensive parametric study is performed on two-dimensional (2D) axisymmetric finite element (FE) unit cell calculations, using a Kocks-Mecking type hardening law. The cell calculations demonstrate that accounting for the stage IV hardening can have a profound effect on delaying void coalescence and increasing the ductility. The magnitude of the recovery term during stage III has also a significant effect on the void growth rate. Then, the Kocks-Mecking law is incorporated into the Gologanu-Leblond-Devaux (GLD) porous plasticity model supplemented by two different versions of the Thomason void coalescence criterion. The predictions of the damage model are in good agreement with the results of the FE calculations in terms of the stress-strain curves, the evolution of void shape and porosity, as well as the strain value at the onset of void coalescence.  相似文献

A phenomenological anisotropic damage progression formulation for porous ductile metals with second phases is described through mechanisms of void nucleation, growth and coalescence. The model is motivated from fracture mechanisms and microscale physical observations. To describe the creation of new pores, the decohesion at the particle–matrix interface and the fragmentation of second phase particles, the void-crack nucleation equation is related to several microstructural parameters (fracture toughness, length scale parameter, particle size, volume and fraction of second phase), the plastic strain level, and the stress state. Nucleation is represented by a general symmetric second rank tensor, and its components are proportional to the absolute value of the plastic strain rate components. Based on the Rice and Tracey model, void growth is a scalar function of the trace of damage tensor and the positive triaxiality. Like nucleation, coalescence is a second rank tensor governed by the plastic strain rate tensor and the stress state. The coalescence threshold is related to the void length scale for void impingement and void sheet mechanisms. The coupling of damage with the Bammann–Chiesa–Johnson (BCJ) plasticity model is written in the thermodynamic framework and derives from the concept of effective stress assuming the hypothesis of energy equivalence. A full-implicit algorithm is used for the stress integration and the determination of the consistent tangent operator. Finally, macroscale correlations to cast A356 AL alloy and wrought 6061-T6 AL alloy experimental data are completed with predictive void-crack evolution to illustrate the applicability of the anisotropic damage model.  相似文献

The main aim of this paper is to opens out the meso-mechanism of void growth and coalescence in the matrix materials with graded strain-hardening exponent distribution. For this end, detailed finite element computations of a representative cylindrical cell containing a spherical void have been carried out. According to the FE analyses, significant effects of the strain-hardening exponent gradient (SEG) in the matrix on the void growth and coalescence are revealed: (1) In the homogeneous materials, the void growth and coalescence are slightly dependent on the strain-hardening exponent, however, the SEG distribution in the matrix can increase remarkably the void growth rate and decrease seriously the void coalescence strain. (2) The critical void shapes in the homogeneous materials are mainly governed by the macroscopic stress triaxiality, but due to earlier plastic flow localization in the softer matrix layer, the SEG distribution in the matrix has very significant effects on the deformed void shapes, especially when the stress triaxiality is lower. (3) When the triaxial stress levels are lower, in the homogeneous materials, the shape change mode of the void evolution is dominate so the void growth rate is very low; however, the SEG distribution in the matrix can bring the volume change mode out, as a result of increasing the void growth rate. (4) Comparisons of the numerical results with the existing damage model indicate that the classic damage model cannot give satisfying prediction to the void growth in both the homogeneous strain-hardening matrix and the SEG materials. On the basis of large numbers of numerical computations, a new damage model, which can uniformly describe the void growing in the homogeneous and plasticity gradient materials, is suggested. A mass of element computations have validated that the new damage model can give satisfying agreement with the FE results of cell model.  相似文献

Finite element (FE) calculations of a cylindrical cell containing a spherical hole have been performed under large strain conditions for varying triaxiality with three different constitutive models for the matrix material, i.e. rate independent plastic material with isotropic hardening, visco-plastic material under both isothermal and adiabatic conditions, and porous plastic material with a second population of voids nucleating strain controlled. The “mesoscopic” stress-strain and void growth responses of the cell are compared with predictions of the modified Gurson model in order to study the effects of varying triaxiality and strain rate on the critical void volume fraction. The interaction of two different sizes of voids was modelled by changing the strain level for nucleation and the stress triaxiality. The study confirms that the void volume fraction at void coalescence does not depend significantly on the triaxiality if the initial volume fraction of the primary voids is small and if there are no secondary voids. The strain rate does not affect fc either. The results also indicate that a single internal variable, f, is not sufficient to characterize the fracture processes in materials containing two different size-scales of void nucleating particles.  相似文献

One of the major drawbacks of the Gurson-type of porous plasticity models is the inability of these models to predict material failure under low stress triaxiality, shear dominated conditions. This study addresses this issue by combining the damage mechanics concept with the porous plasticity model that accounts for void nucleation, growth and coalescence. In particular, the widely adopted Gurson–Tvergaard–Needleman (GTN) model is extended by coupling two damage parameters, representing the volumetric damage (void volume fraction) and the shear damage, respectively, into the yield function and flow potential. The effectiveness of the new model is illustrated through a series of numerical tests comparing its performance with existing models. The current model not only is capable of predicting damage and fracture under low (even negative) triaxiality conditions but also suppresses spurious damage that has been shown to develop in earlier modifications of the GTN model for moderate to high triaxiality regimes. Finally the modified GTN model is applied to predict the ductile fracture behavior of a beta-treated Zircaloy-4 by coupling the proposed damage modeling framework with a recently developed J2J3 plasticity model for the matrix material. Model parameters are calibrated using experimental data, and the calibrated model predicts failure initiation and propagation in various specimens experiencing a wide range of triaxiality and Lode parameter combinations.  相似文献

Micromechanics of coalescence in ductile fracture   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Significant progress has been recently made in modelling the onset of void coalescence by internal necking in ductile materials. The aim of this paper is to develop a micro-mechanical framework for the whole coalescence regime, suitable for finite-element implementation. The model is defined by a set of constitutive equations including a closed form of the yield surface along with appropriate evolution laws for void shape and ligament size. Normality is still obeyed during coalescence. The derivation of the evolution laws is carefully guided by coalescence phenomenology inferred from micromechanical unit-cell calculations. The major implication of the model is that the stress carrying capacity of the elementary volume vanishes as a natural outcome of ligament size reduction. Moreover, the drop in the macroscopic stress accompanying coalescence can be quantified for many initial microstructures provided that the microstructure state is known at incipient coalescence. The second part of the paper addresses a more practical issue, that is the prediction of the acceleration rate δ in the Tvergaard-Needleman phenomenological approach to coalescence. For that purpose, a Gurson-like model including void shape effects is used. Results are presented and discussed in the limiting case of a non-hardening material for different initial microstructures and various stress states. Predicted values of δ are extremely sensitive to stress triaxiality and initial spacing ratio. The effect of initial porosity is significant at low triaxiality whereas the effect of initial void shape is emphasized at high triaxiality.  相似文献

The effects of void size and hardening in a hexagonal close-packed single crystal containing a cylindrical void loaded by a far-field equibiaxial tensile stress under plane strain conditions are studied. The crystal has three in-plane slip systems oriented at the angle 60° with respect to one another. Finite element simulations are performed using a strain gradient crystal plasticity formulation with an intrinsic length scale parameter in a non-local strain gradient constitutive framework. For a vanishing length scale parameter the non-local formulation reduces to a local crystal plasticity formulation. The stress and deformation fields obtained with a local non-hardening constitutive formulation are compared to those obtained from a local hardening formulation and to those from a non-local formulation. Compared to the case of the non-hardening local constitutive formulation, it is shown that a local theory with hardening has only minor effects on the deformation field around the void, whereas a significant difference is obtained with the non-local constitutive relation. Finally, it is shown that the applied stress state required to activate plastic deformation at the void is up to three times higher for smaller void sizes than for larger void sizes in the non-local material.
