The flow characteristics around an elliptic cylinder with an axis ratio of AR=2 located near a flat plate were investigated experimentally. The elliptic cylinder was embedded in a turbulent boundary layer whose thickness is larger than the cylinder height. For comparison, the same experiment was carried out for a circular cylinder having the same vertical height. The Reynolds number based on the height of the cylinder cross-section was 14000. The pressure distributions on the cylinder surface and on the flat plate were measured for various gap distances between the cylinder and the plate. The wake velocity profiles behind the cylinder were measured using hot-wire anemometry. In the near-wake region, the vortices are shed regularly only when the gap ratio is greater than the critical value of G/B=0·4. The critical gap ratio is larger than that of a circular cylinder. The variation of surface pressure distributions on the elliptic cylinder with respect to the gap ratio is much smaller than that on the circular cylinder. This trend is more evident on the upper surface than the lower one. The surface pressures on the flat plate recover faster than those for the case of the circular cylinder at downstream locations. As the gap ratio increases, the drag coefficient of the cylinder itself increases, but the lift coefficient decreases. For all gap ratios tested in this study, the drag coefficient of the elliptic cylinder is about half that of the circular cylinder. The ground effect of the cylinder at small gap ratio constrains the flow passing through the gap, and restricts the vortex shedding from the cylinder, especially in the lower side of the cylinder wake. This constraint effect is more severe for the elliptic cylinder, compared to the circular cylinder. The wall static pressure in the vicinity of drag reducing outer layer devices in flat wall turbulent boundary layers has been measured and compared with an inviscid theory. Symmetric and cambered airfoil devices have been examined at small angles of attack and very low chord Reynolds numbers. Airfoil devices impose a sequence of strong favorable and adverse pressure gradients on the boundary layer whose drag is to be reduced. At very small angles of attack (± 2°), this pressure field extends up to about three chord lengths downstream of the trailing edge of an airfoil device. Also examined are the pressures on the upper and lower surfaces of a symmetric airfoil device in the freestream and near the wall. The freestream pressure distribution around an airfoil section is altered by the wall proximity. The relevance of lift enhancement caused by wall proximity to drag reduction has been discussed. The pressure distributions on the flat wall beneath the symmetric airfoil devices are predicted well by the inviscid theory. However, the remaining pressure distributions are predicted only qualitatively, presumably because of strong viscous effects.  相似文献

Time-resolved surface pressure measurements are used to experimentally investigate characteristics of separation and transition over a NACA 0018 airfoil for the relatively wide range of chord Reynolds numbers from 50,000 to 250,000 and angles of attack from 0° to 21°. The results provide a comprehensive data set of characteristic parameters for separated shear layer development and reveal important dependencies of these quantities on flow conditions. Mean surface pressure measurements are used to explore the variation in separation bubble position, edge velocity in the separated shear layer, and lift coefficients with angle of attack and Reynolds number. Consistent with previous studies, the separation bubble is found to move upstream and decrease in length as the Reynolds number and angle of attack increase. Above a certain angle of attack, the proximity of the separation bubble to the location of the suction peak results in a reduced lift slope compared to that observed at lower angles. Simultaneous measurements of the time-varying component of surface pressure at various spatial locations on the model are used to estimate the frequency of shear layer instability, maximum root-mean-square (RMS) surface pressure, spatial amplification rates of RMS surface pressure, and convection speeds of the pressure fluctuations in the separation bubble. A power-law correlation between the shear layer instability frequency and Reynolds number is shown to provide an order of magnitude estimate of the central frequency of disturbance amplification for various airfoil geometries at low Reynolds numbers. Maximum RMS surface pressures are found to agree with values measured in separation bubbles over geometries other than airfoils, when normalized by the dynamic pressure based on edge velocity. Spatial amplification rates in the separation bubble increase with both Reynolds number and angle of attack, causing the accompanying decrease in separation bubble length. Values of the convection speed of pressure fluctuations in the separated shear layer are measured to be between 35 and 50% of the edge velocity, consistent with predictions of linear stability theory for separated shear layers.  相似文献

Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) can be difficult to control in the outdoor environment as they fly at relatively low speeds and are of low mass, yet exposed to high levels of freestream turbulence present within the Atmospheric Boundary Layer. In order to examine transient flow phenomena, two turbulence conditions of nominally the same longitudinal integral length scale (Lxx/c?=?1) but with significantly different intensities (Ti?=?7.2?% and 12.3?%) were generated within a wind tunnel; time-varying surface pressure measurements, smoke flow visualization, and wake velocity measurements were made on a thin flat plate airfoil. Rapid changes in oncoming flow pitch angle resulted in the shear layer to separate from the leading edge of the airfoil even at lower geometric angles of attack. At higher geometric angles of attack, massive flow separation occurred at the leading edge followed by enhanced roll up of the shear layer. This lead to the formation of large Leading Edge Vortices (LEVs) that advected at a rate much lower than the mean flow speed while imparting high pressure fluctuations over the airfoil. The rate of LEV formation was dependent on the angle of attack until 10° and it was independent of the turbulence properties tested. The fluctuations in surface pressures and consequently aerodynamic loads were considerably limited on the airfoil bottom surface due to the favorable pressure gradient.  相似文献

An experimental investigation of a passively controlled open cavity with a length to depth ratio of six and freestream Mach number of 1.4 was conducted to investigate the mechanisms responsible for the observed surface pressure reductions. The passive control comes from placing a spanwise aligned cylinder in the boundary layer near the leading edge of the cavity. The two control configurations were isolated from previous experiments of the fluctuating surface pressure and correspond to a larger diameter rod near the top of the boundary layer and a smaller diameter rod placed near the wall. These were further analyzed using particle image velocimetry in an attempt to elicit the responsible mechanism for the flow control. The use of two-point statistics revealed the wall normal turbulent velocity correlation’s evolution became elongated in the wall normal direction. This suggests that the shear layer may be less-organized and consists of smaller-scale structures. The disturbance of the feedback receptivity loop is clearly demonstrated for the controlled configurations evidenced by weakened correlation signals between the aft wall sensor and positions on the cavity floor. The presence of the rod is shown to decrease the mean shear gradient, more effectively for the large rod placed at the top of the boundary layer, throughout the shear layer. The efficacy of the control leads to an initially thicker shear layer which spreads more rapidly and is clearly demonstrated by vorticity growth rates, mean, and turbulent flowfield statistics.  相似文献

Detailed distributions of heat flux in the region of shock wave and turbulent boundary layer interaction induced by a cylinder were measured in the shock tunnel. Oil flow patterns and Schlieren photographs were taken. Empirical relations were given for determining separation shock angle, peaks of heat flux and their locations on both cylinder leading edge and flat plate surface, and other characteristic parameters of the interaction region.  相似文献

Heat transfer from a flat plate has been investigated when a cylinder array is located near the wall. Each cylinder in the cylinder array was positioned normal to the flow direction and parallel to the flat plate surface. Measurements of the heat transfer coefficient and the optimum value for the cylinder pitch and spacing between the cylinders and the flat plate surface were obtained. A comparison of the heat transfer mechanism in this flow system with that obtained previously for the case when a single cylinder is inserted in the boundary layer was made.  相似文献

本文采用时间解析的二维粒子图像测速技术,对零压力梯度光滑以及汇聚和发散沟槽表面平板湍流边界层统计特性和流动结构进行了研究.结果表明在垂直于汇聚和发散沟槽表面的对称平面内,相对于光滑壁面,发散沟槽壁面使当地边界层厚度、壁面摩擦阻力、湍流脉动、雷诺应力等明显减小;而汇聚沟槽壁面对湍流边界层特性和流动结构的影响正好相反,汇聚沟槽使壁面流体有远离壁面向上运动的趋势,因而导致边界层厚度增加了约43%;同时,在汇聚沟槽表面情况下流向大尺度相干结构更容易形成,这对减阻是不利的.此外,顺向涡数量在湍流边界层的对数区均存在一个极大值,发散沟槽表面所对应的极大值位置更靠近沟槽壁面,而在汇聚沟槽表面则有远离壁面的趋势,由顺向涡诱导产生的较强的喷射和扫掠运动会在湍流边界层中产生较强的剪切作用,顺向涡数量的减少是发散沟槽壁面当地摩擦阻力降低的主要原因.  相似文献

Large Eddy Simulation of a Controlled Diffusion Compressor Cascade   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In this research a Controlled Diffusion (CD) compressor cascade stator blade is simulated at a Reynolds number of ??700,000, based on inflow velocity and chord length, using Large Eddy Simulation (LES). A wide range of flow inlet angles are computed, including conditions near the design angle, and at high negative and positive incidence. At all inlet angles the surface pressure distributions are well-predicted by the LES. Near the design angle the computed suction side boundary layer thickness agrees well with experimental data, whilst the pressure side boundary layer is poorly predicted due to the inability of LES to capture natural boundary layer transition on the present grid. A good estimation of the loss is computed near the design angle, whilst at both high positive and negative incidences the loss is less well predicted owing to discrepancies between the computed and experimental boundary layer thickness. At incidences above the design angle a laminar separation bubble forms near the leading edge of the suction surface, which undergoes a transition to turbulence. Similar behaviour is noted on the pressure surface at negative incidence. At high negative incidence contra-rotating vortex pairs are found to form around the leading edge in response to an unsteady stagnation line across the span of the blade. Such structures are not apparent in time-averaged statistical data due to their highly-transient nature.  相似文献

The method of mergeable asymptotic expansions has recently been used effectively in investigations devoted to the study of boundary layer interaction with an external inviscid flow at high subcritical Reynolds numbers Re. The asymptotic analysis permits obtaining a limit pattern of the flow around a solid as Re þ, and determining the similarity and quantitative regularity laws which are in good agreement with experimental results. Thus by using the method of mergeable asymptotic expansions it is shown in [1–4] that near sites with high local curvature of the body contour and flow separation and attachment points, an interaction domain appears that has a small length on the order of Re-3/8. In this flow domain, which has a three-layer structure, the pressure distribution in a first approximation already depends on the change in boundary-layer displacement thickness, while the induced pressure gradient, in turn, influences the flow in the boundary layer. An analogous situation occurs in the neighborhood of the trailing edge of a flat plate where an interaction domain also appears [5, 6]. The flow in the neighborhood of the trailing edge of a flat plate around which a supersonic viscous gas flows was examined in [7]. Numerical results in this paper show that the friction stress on the plate surface remains positive everywhere in the interaction domain, and grows on approaching the trailing edge. The supersonic flow around the trailing edge of a flat plate at a small angle of attack was investigated in [8, 9], Supersonic flow of a viscous gas in the neighborhood of the trailing edge of a flat plate at zero angle of attack is examined in [10], but with different velocity values in the inviscid part of the flow on the upper and lower sides of the plate. In the present work, experimental tests are conducted to study boundary layer transition over a supercritical airfoil undergoing pitch oscillations using hot-film sensors. Tests have been undertaken at an incompressible flow. Three reduced frequencies of oscillations and two mean angles of attack are studied and the influences of those parameters on transition location are discussed. Different algorithms are examined on the hot-film signals to detect the transition point. Results show the formation of a laminar separation bubble near the leading edge and at relatively higher angles of attack which leads to the transition of the boundary layer. However, at lower angles of attack, the amplification of the peaks in voltage signal indicate the emergence of the vortical structures within the boundary layer, introducing a different transition mechanism. Moreover, an increase in reduced frequency leads to a delay in transition onset, postponing it to a higher angle of attack, which widens the hysteresis between the upstroke and downstroke motions. Rising the reduced frequency yields in weakening or omission of vortical disturbances ensuing the removal of spikes in the signals. Of the other important results observed, is faster movement of the relaminarization point in the higher mean angle of attack. Finally, a time–frequency analysis of the hot-film signals is performed to investigate evolution of spectral features of the transition due to the pitching motion. An asymmetry is clearly observed in frequency pattern of the signals far from the bubble zone towards the trailing edge; this may reflect the difference between the transition and relaminarization physics. Augmentation of heat transfer from a flat plate using a turbulence promoter has been studied. A circular cylinder 8 mm in diameter was placed in the turbulent boundary layer detached from the flat plate. It was located parallel to the plate and perpendicular to the flow direction. Clearance, c, between the cylinder and the flat plate was varied in nine steps: c=0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 11, 20 and 29.5 mm. Measurements were made of the local heat transfer coefficients, mean velocity profiles, turbulence intensity profiles, static pressure and skin friction. Experimental results showed that the heat transfer deterioration which occurs just downstream of the cylinder at c=0 mm can be removed by displacing the cylinder a small distance from the wall. The improvement in heat transfer is mainly due to the unsteadiness of the recirculating flow on the plate and the effect of intense turbulence arriving at the near wall region from the lower shear layer of the cylinder wake. Heat transfer augmentation is most effective when c=4 mm and becomes less effective when c is increased more than 6 mm. The enhancement disappears far downstream from the cylinder.  相似文献

An experimental investigation has been conducted to clarify fouling effects of geothermal water scale deposited onto a surface upon its forced convection heat transfer characteristics. Examined is an elliptic cylinder of an axis ratio 1∶3, on which particles of silica scale are uniformly distributed. Local and mean heat transfer characteristics were measured for angles of attack 0° and 90°. Subsequently the fouling resistance is estimated from those results. Mean and turbulent fluctuating velocities were also measured in order to correlate the heat transfer features with the velocity field in the near wake of the elliptic cylinder.  相似文献

Experimental investigations in fluid flow and heat transfer have been carried out to study the effect of wall proximity due to flow separation around a square prism at Reynolds number 2.6 × 104, blockage ratio 0.1, different height-ratios and various angles of attack. The static pressure distribution has been measured on all faces of the square prism. The results have been presented in the form of pressure coefficient, drag coefficient for various height-ratios. The pressure distribution shows positive values on the front face whereas on the rear face negative values of the pressure coefficient have been observed. The positive pressure coefficient for different height-ratios does not vary too much but the negative values of pressure coefficient are higher for all points on the surface as the bluff body approaches towards the upper wall of the wind tunnel. The drag coefficient decreases with the increase in angle of attack as the height-ratio decreases. The maximum value of drag coefficient has been observed at an angle of attack nearly 50° for the square prism at all height-ratios. The heat transfer experiments have been carried out under constant heat flux condition. Heat transfer coefficient are determined from the measured wall temperature and ambient temperature and presented in the form of Nusselt number. Both local and average Nusselt numbers have been presented for various height-ratios. The variation of local Nusselt number has been shown with non-dimensional distance for different angles of attack. The variation of average Nusselt number has also been shown with different angles of attack. The local as well as average Nusselt number decreases as the height-ratio decreases for all non-dimensional distance and angle of attack, respectively, for the square prism. The average Nusselt number for the square prism varies with the angle of attack. But there is no definite angle of attack at which the value of average Nusselt number is either maximum or minimum.  相似文献

The interaction of a plane shear layer with a thin flat plate located in the nonlinear region of the shear layer has been investigated experimentally. The shear layer's velocity ratio is 0.375, and its Reynolds number is ΔUθ0/μ = 625. It is found that for different angles of attack of the plate, the mixing layer is deflected toward the slower stream. In addition, the plate attenuates turbulent fluctuations of the shear layer structures.  相似文献

The flow fields behind elliptic cylinders adjacent to a free surface were investigated experimentally in a circulating water channel. A range of cylinder aspect ratios (AR=2, 3, 4) were considered, while the cross-sectional area of the elliptical cylinder was kept constant. The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of cylinder aspect ratio and a free surface on the flow structure in the near-wake behind elliptic cylinders. For each elliptic cylinder, the flow structure was analyzed for various values of the submergence depth of the cylinder beneath the free surface. The flow fields were measured using a single-frame double-exposure PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) system. For each experimental condition, 350 instantaneous velocity fields were obtained and ensemble-averaged to obtain the mean velocity field and spatial distribution of the mean vorticity statistics. The results show that near-wake can be classified into three typical flow patterns: formation of a Coanda flow, generation of substantial jet-like flow, and attachment of this jet flow to the free surface. The general flow structure observed behind the elliptic cylinders resembles the structure previously reported for a circular cylinder submerged near a free surface. However, the wake width and the angle of downward deflection of the shear layer developed from the lower surface of the elliptic cylinder differ from those observed for a circular cylinder. These trends are enhanced as cylinder aspect ratio is increased. In addition, the free surface distortion is also discussed in the paper.  相似文献

The steady laminar boundary layer flow along a flat plate is studied taking into account the variation of fluid viscosity and fluid Prandtl number with temperature. In the forced convection case the plate moves with constant velocity and its temperature varies in power law with x. In the mixed convection case the plate temperature is constant and the fluid moves upwards due to an external free stream and due to buoyancy forces. The results are obtained with the direct numerical solution of the boundary layer equations. The study concerns the wall heat transfer, the wall shear stress and velocity and temperature profiles across the boundary layer. The results of the present work are different from those existing in the literature, which have been obtained with the assumption of constant Pr number.  相似文献

The receptivity of a supersonic (M = 6) boundary layer on a flat plate to acoustic disturbances is investigated on the basis of a numerical solution of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations. Numerical results obtained for fast and slow acoustic waves impinging on the plate at zero angle agree qualitatively with asymptotic theory. Calculations carried out for other angles of incidence of the acoustic waves reveal new features of the perturbation field in the neighborhood of the leading edge of the plate. It is shown that, due to visco-inviscid interaction, the shock formed near the leading edge may significantly affect the acoustic field and the receptivity.  相似文献

Measurements of the drag caused by turbulent boundary layer mean wall shear stress on cylinders at small angles of attack and high length Reynolds numbers (8×106<ReL<6×107) are presented. The use of a full-scale, high-speed towing tank enabled the development of turbulent boundary layers on cylinders made of stainless steel, aluminum, titanium, and polyvinyl chloride. The diameter of all cylinders in this experiment was 12.7 mm; two cylinder lengths, 3.05 m and 6.10 m, were used, corresponding to aspect ratio values L/a=480 and 960, respectively. Materials of various densities were towed at critical angles, resulting in linear cylinder geometry for tow speeds ranging from 2.6 m/s to 20.7 m/s and angles between 0° and 12°. Towing angles were measured with digital photography, and streamwise drag was measured with a strut-mounted load cell at the tow point. The measured tangential drag was very sensitive to small increases in angle at all tow speeds. A momentum thickness length scale is proposed to scale the tangential drag coefficient. The effects of the cross-flow resulting from the small angles of tow have a significant effect on the tangential drag coefficient values. A scaling for the orthogonal force on the cylinders was determined and provides a correction to published normal drag coefficient values for pure cross-flow. The presence of the axial turbulent boundary layer has a significant effect on these orthogonal forces.  相似文献
