Heat transfer from a flat plate has been investigated when a cylinder array is located near the wall. Each cylinder in the cylinder array was positioned normal to the flow direction and parallel to the flat plate surface. Measurements of the heat transfer coefficient and the optimum value for the cylinder pitch and spacing between the cylinders and the flat plate surface were obtained. A comparison of the heat transfer mechanism in this flow system with that obtained previously for the case when a single cylinder is inserted in the boundary layer was made.  相似文献

We study flow and heat transfer to a cylinder in cross flow at Re = 3,900–80,000 by means of three-dimensional transient RANS (T-RANS) simulations, employing an RNG k − ε turbulence model. Both the case of a bare solid cylinder and that of a solid cylinder surrounded at some fixed distance by a thin porous layer have been studied. The latter configuration is a standard test geometry for measuring the insulating and protective performance of garments. In this geometry, the flow in the space between the solid cylinder and the porous layer is laminar but periodic, whereas the outer flow is transitional and characterized by vortex shedding in the wake of the cylinder. The results from the T-RANS simulations are validated against data from Direct Numerical Simulations and experiments. It is found that T-RANS is very well suited for simulating this type of flow. The transient nature of the flow underneath the porous layer is well reproduced, as well as the influence of vortex shedding on the heat transfer in the downstream stagnation zone. T-RANS results are found to be in much better agreement with DNS and experimental data than results from steady-state RANS.  相似文献

Extensive single point turbulence measurements made in the boundary layer on a mildly curved heated convex wall show that the turbulence heat fluxes and Stanton number are more sensitive to a change in wall curvature than the Reynolds stresses and skinfriction coefficient, and that downstream, as the flow adjusts to new curved conditions, the St/c f ratio of Reynolds analogy is appreciably lower than in plane wall flow for the same conditions. Details of the turbulence structure in unheated flow have been documented in an earlier paper; temperature field measurements now described comprise mean temperature distributions, the streamwise variation of wall heat flux, profiles of the temperature variance, transverse and streamwise heat fluxes, and triple correlations. Turbulent diffusion of heat flux is drastically reduced even by mild curvature; changes in the heat fluxes are of the same order as changes in the shear stress, that is, an order of magnitude greater than the ratio of boundary layer thickness to wall radius of curvature. The data include plane flow measurements taken in a developed boundary layer upstream of a change in wall curvature.  相似文献

An efficient hybrid uncorrelated wall plane waves–boundary element method (UWPW-BEM) technique is proposed to predict the flow-induced noise from a structure in low Mach number turbulent flow. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are used to estimate the turbulent boundary layer parameters such as convective velocity, boundary layer thickness, and wall shear stress over the surface of the structure. The spectrum of the wall pressure fluctuations is evaluated from the turbulent boundary layer parameters and by using semi-empirical models from literature. The wall pressure field underneath the turbulent boundary layer is synthesized by realizations of uncorrelated wall plane waves (UWPW). An acoustic BEM solver is then employed to compute the acoustic pressure scattered by the structure from the synthesized wall pressure field. Finally, the acoustic response of the structure in turbulent flow is obtained as an ensemble average of the acoustic pressures due to all realizations of uncorrelated plane waves. To demonstrate the hybrid UWPW-BEM approach, the self-noise generated by a flat plate in turbulent flow with Reynolds number based on chord Rec = 4.9 × 105 is predicted. The results are compared with those obtained from a large eddy simulation (LES)-BEM technique as well as with experimental data from literature.  相似文献

Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of flow over and heat transfer from a flat plate affected by free-stream fluctuations were performed. A contoured upper wall was employed to generate a favourable streamwise pressure gradient along a large portion of the flat plate. The free-stream fluctuations originated from a separate LES of isotropic turbulence in a box. In the laminar portions of the accelerating boundary layer flow the formation of streaks was observed to induce an increase in heat transfer by the exchange of hot fluid near the surface of the plate and cold fluid from the free-stream. In the regions where the streamwise pressure gradient was only mildly favourable, intermittent turbulent spots were detected which relaminarised downstream as the streamwise pressure gradient became stronger. The relaminarisation of the turbulent spots was reflected by a slight decrease in the friction coefficient, which converged to its laminar value in the region where the streamwise pressure gradient was strongest.  相似文献

Large‐eddy simulation (LES) and Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes simulation (RANS) with different turbulence models (including the standard k?ε, the standard k?ω, the shear stress transport k?ω (SST k?ω), and Spalart–Allmaras (S–A) turbulence models) have been employed to compute the turbulent flow of a two‐dimensional turbulent boundary layer over an unswept bump. The predictions of the simulations were compared with available experimental measurements in the literature. The comparisons of the LES and the SST k?ω model including the mean flow and turbulence stresses are in satisfied agreements with the available measurements. Although the flow experiences a strong adverse pressure gradient along the rear surface, the boundary layer is unique in that intermittent detachment occurring near the wall. The numerical results indicate that the boundary layer is not followed by mean‐flow separation or incipient separation as shown from the numerical results. The resolved turbulent shear stress is in a reasonable agreement with the experimental data, though the computational result of LES shows that its peak is overpredicted near the trailing edge of the bump, while the other used turbulence models, except the standard k?ε, underpredicts it. Analysis of the numerical results from LES confirms the experimental data, in which the existence of internal layers over the bump surface upstream of the summit and along the downstream flat plate. It also demonstrates that the quasi‐step increase in skin friction is due to perturbations in pressure gradient. The surface curvature enhances the near‐wall shear production of turbulent stresses, and is responsible for the formation of the internal layers. The aim of the present work is to examine the response and prediction capability of LES with the dynamic eddy viscosity model as a sub‐grid scale to the complex turbulence structure with the presence of streamline curvature generated by a bumpy surface. Aiming to reduce the computational costs with focus on the mean behavior of the non‐equilibrium turbulent boundary layer of flow over the bump surface, the present investigation also explains the best capability of one of the used RANS turbulence models to capture the driving mechanism for the surprisingly rapid return to equilibrium over the trailing flat plate found in the measurements. Finite-volume, semi-elliptic computations are reported of the three-dimensional flow around a 90° square-sectioned bend for which detailed laser-Doppler measurements have been reported by Taylor et al.1 While the standard k- eddy-viscosity model has been used in the main flow region, in place of the usual “wall functiond”, the mixing-length hypothesis has been employed to resolve the flow in the layer immediately adjacent to the wall. The scheme is successful in predicting the details of the primary and secondary flow fields both within the bend and downstream thereof.  相似文献

This study accurately predicts the cases of turbulent flow around a surface‐mounted two‐dimensional rib with varying lengths. The numerical method employs a differencing scheme for integrating the elliptic Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes equations and the continuity equation. A two‐equation k–ε turbulence model is employed to simulate the turbulent transport quantities and close the solving problem. The near‐wall regions of the separated sides of the rib are resolved by a near‐wall model of a two‐layer approach instead of the wall function approximation. Computations for flow over a surface‐mounted rectangular rib are conducted for the variations in the rib lengths. Results indicate that upstream of the obstacle, the length of the recirculating region remains unchanged with varying rib lengths; while the downstream length of the recirculating region is a strong function of rib length and changes nearly linearly for the varying lengths of B/H=0.1 to B/H=4.0. Reattachment on top of the rib, owing to its increasing length, affects the downstream boundary layer development. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Thermal convection for an incompressible Herschel-Bulkley fluid along an annular duct, whose inner cylinder is rotating and outer is at rest, is analyzed numerically and experimentally. The outer cylinder is heated at constant heat flux density and the inner one is assumed adiabatic. The first part of this study deals with the effect of the rheological behavior of the fluid and that of the rotation of the inner cylinder on the flow field and heat transfer coefficient. All the physical properties are assumed constant and the flow is assumed fully developed. The critical Rossby number Roc = (R1Ω/Ud)c, for which the dimension of the plug flow is reduced to zero is determined with respect to the flow behavior index, the radius ratio and the Herschel-Bulkley number for axial flow. The rotation of the inner cylinder induces a decrease of the axial velocity gradient at the outer cylinder thereby reducing the heat transfer between the heated wall and the fluid. The second part of this study introduces the variation of the consistency K with temperature and analyzes the evolution of the flow pattern and heat transfer coefficient along the heating zone. Two cases are distinguished depending on the Rossby number: (i) Ro < Roc, the plug flow dimension increases along the heating zone; (ii) Ro < Roc, the decrease of K with temperature leads to the reappearance of the plug flow. For high angular velocities, it is possible to have a plug zone attached to the outer cylinder. Finally, a correlation is proposed for the Nusselt number. It shows clearly that the effect of thermodependency of K on the heat transfer becomes more important with increasing rotational velocity of the inner cylinder.  相似文献

The flow characteristics around an inclined elliptic cylinder located near a flat plate were investigated experimentally. The axis ratio of the elliptic cylinder was AR=2. The pressure distributions along the surface of the cylinder and the flat plate were measured by varying the angle of attack of the elliptic cylinder. The velocity profiles behind the cylinder were measured using hot-wire anemometry. When the angle of attack varies, the peak pressure location on the windward cylinder surface moves towards the rear edge of the cylinder, while that on the leeward surface moves towards the front edge of the cylinder. The vortex-shedding frequency also gradually decreases, defining a critical angle of attack for each gap ratio. The location of the minimum pressure on the flat plate surface moves downstream for positive angles of attack, while it moves upstream for negative angles of attack. Negative angles of attack cause a greater disturbance in the boundary layer near the wall compared to positive angles of attack. This shows that the separated wall shear layer from the boundary layer and the lower shear layer of the cylinder wake are strongly merged compared to other cases.  相似文献

The process of laminar to turbulent transition induced by a von Karman vortex street wake, was studied for the case of a flat plate boundary layer. The boundary layer developed under zero pressure gradient conditions. The vortex street was generated by a cylinder positioned in the free stream. An X-type hot-wire probe located in the boundary layer, measured the streamwise and normal to the wall velocity components. The measurements covered two areas; the region of transition onset and development and the region where the wake and the boundary layer merged producing a turbulent flow. The evolution of Reynolds stresses and rms-values of velocity fluctuations along the transition region are presented and discussed. From the profiles of the Reynolds stress and the mean velocity profile, a ‘negative' energy production region along the transition region, was identified. A quadrant splitting analysis was applied to the instantaneous Reynolds stress signals. The contributions of the elementary coherent structures to the total Reynolds stress were evaluated, for several x-positions of the near wall region. Distinct regions in the streamwise and normal to the wall directions were identified during the transition.  相似文献

Most of the fundamental studies of the use of air‐jet vortex generators (AJVGs) have concentrated on their potential ability to inhibit boundary layer separation on aerofoils. However, AJVGs may be of use in controlling or enhancing certain features of internal duct flows. For example, they may be of use in controlling the boundary layer at the entrance to engine air intakes, or as a means of increasing mixing and heat transfer. The objective of this paper is to analyse the flow field in the proximity of an air‐jet vortex generator array in a duct by using two local numerical models, i.e. a simple flat plate model and a more geometrically faithful sector model. The sector model mirrors the circular nature of the duct's cross‐section and the centre line conditions on the upper boundary. The flow was assumed fully turbulent and was solved using the finite volume, Navier–Stokes Code CFX 4 (CFDS, AEA Technology, Harwell) on a non‐orthogonal, body‐fitted, grid using the k–ε turbulence model and standard wall functions. Streamwise, vertical and cross‐stream velocity profiles, circulation and peak vorticity decay, peak vorticity paths in cross‐stream and streamwise direction, cross‐stream vorticity profiles and cross‐stream wall shear stress distributions were predicted. Negligible difference in results was observed between the flat plate and the sector model, since the produced vortices were small relative to the duct diameter and close to the surface. The flow field was most enhanced, i.e. maximum thinning of the boundary layer, with a configuration of 30° pitch and 75° skew angle. No significant difference in results could be observed between co‐ and counter‐rotating vortex arrays. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The flow in the boundary layer in the vicinity of the stagnation point of a flat plate is examined. The outer stream consists of turbulent flow of the jet type, directed normally to the plate. Assumptions concerning the connection between the pulsations in velocity and temperature in the boundary layer and the average parameters chosen on the basis of experimental data made it possible to obtain an isomorphic solution of the boundary layer equations. Equations are obtained for the friction and heat transfer at the wall in the region of gradient flow taking into account the effect of the turbulence of the impinging stream. It is shown that the friction at the wall is insensitive to the turbulence of the impinging stream, while the heat transfer is significantly increased with an increase in the pulsations of the outer flow. These properties are confirmed by the results of experimental studies [1–4].Translated from Zhurnal Prikladnoi Mekhaniki i Tekhnicheskoi Fiziki, No. 5, pp. 83–87, September–October, 1973.  相似文献

The mixed convection in a horizontal fluid layer which is generated by uniform heating from below and by rotation of one of the boundaries of the layer was studied experimentally. The region occupied by the fluid is a cylinder of radius320 mm and height45 mm. Either the upper or the lower boundary together with the side wall rotates. For Rayleigh numbersRa≃2·10 7, in a broad range of Reynolds numbers, based on experimental data we constructed mean-temperature profiles along the normal to the upper boundary and with a uniform step over the radius. In addition, we obtained data on the radial thermal stratification of the fluid, the integral flow through the fluid layer, and information on temperature fluctuations. The complicated character of the dependence of the heat transfer on the Reynolds number was shown. The obtained dependences of the heat transfer and temperature inhomogeneity on Reynolds numbers was explained qualitatively. Transitions occurring after the onset of spiral vortex flow in a wide concentric annular gap of radius ratio 0.8, formed by a stationary outer cylinder and a rotatable inner cylinder, have been studied experimentally. By isothermal heating of the annular surface, it was possible to consider diabatic as well as adiabatic conditions. At an axial Reynolds number of 500 and for a range of Taylor numbers up to 107, power spectra and auto-correlograms were taken at two radial positions near to the inner and outer annular surfaces; these are compared with previous results taken at mid-gap under adiabatic conditions. Measurements of turbulence intensity across the gap were made also. Probability histograms and signal traces for diabatic flow near to the outer annular surface are presented. It has been shown that the vortex transitions affect the thermal boundary layer and, consequently, the heat transfer rates at the outer surface. A positive radial thermal gradient was seen to have little effect on the flow. The imposed axial flow was shown to be stabilising under adiabatic conditions but destabilising under diabatic conditions.  相似文献

An experimental study on heat transfer enhancement for a turbulent natural convection boundary layer in air along a vertical flat plate has been performed by inserting a long flat plate in the spanwise direction (simple heat transfer promoter) and short flat plates aligned in the spanwise direction (split heat transfer promoter) with clearances into the near-wall region of the boundary layer. For a simple heat transfer promoter, the heat transfer coefficients increase by a peak value of approximately 37% in the downstream region of the promoter compared with those in the usual turbulent natural convection boundary layer. It is found from flow visualization and simultaneous measurements of the flow and thermal fields with hot- and cold-wires that such increase of heat transfer coefficients is mainly caused by the deflection of flows toward the outer region of the boundary layer and the invasion of low-temperature fluids from the outer region to the near-wall region with large-scale vortex motions riding out the promoter. However, heat transfer coefficients for a split heat transfer promoter exhibit an increase in peak value of approximately 60% in the downstream region of the promoter. Flow visualization and PIV measurements show that such remarkable heat transfer enhancement is attributed to longitudinal vortices generated by flows passing through the clearances of the promoter in addition to large-scale vortex motions riding out the promoter. Consequently, it is concluded that heat transfer enhancement of the turbulent natural convection boundary layer can be substantially achieved in a wide area of the turbulent natural convection boundary layer by employing multiple column split heat transfer promoters. It may be expected that the heat transfer enhancement in excess of approximately 40% can be accomplished by inserting such promoters.  相似文献

The effect of jet inclination of the local heat transfer under an obliquely impinging round air jet striking on isothermal circular cylinder is experimentally investigated. The circumferential heat transfer distribution as well as axial Nusselt number is measured. The considered parameters are jet Reynolds number in range of 3800–40,000, and jet inclination angle, ranging from 90 to 20. The experiments are carried out for nozzle sizes, d=3, 5 and 7 mm, and separation distance from 7 to 30 of the nozzle diameter. The output results indicated that the point of maximum heat transfer along the x-axis is shifted upstream and the local heat transfer distribution changed as a function of jet inclination. The magnitude of the shift was found to be significantly higher than that observe for a flat plate. The increasing inclination caused increasing asymmetry around the point of maximum heat transfer, with the upstream side of heat transfer profile dropping off more rapidly than the downstream side. Correlations of both the magnitude and shift of maximum heat transfer point are presented. The surface average heat transfer rate is calculated and compared with the normal impingement. A solution of the coupled nonstationary boundary-value problem of turbulent flow around a flat heat-conducting plate of finite thickness having local regions with volume heat sources is given. For modeling the heat transfer in the boundary layer, thek-ε turbulence model is used. It is shown that the thermal conductivity of the plate material significantly affects the surface distributions of both temperature and local friction. Moscow. In this study, we propose a new Low-Reynolds-Number (LRN)one-equation model, which is derived from an LRN two-equation(k-ε) model. The derivation of the transport equation, in principle, is based on the assumption that the turbulent structure parameter remains constant. However, the relation for the turbulent structure parameter a 1(=|− |/k) is modified to account for near-wall turbulence. As a result, the present one-equation model contains a term which takes the near-wall limiting behavior explicitly into account. Thus, the present model provides the correct wall-limiting behavior of turbulence in the vicinity of the wall and can be applied to the analysis of heat transfer. The validity of the present model is tested in channel flows, boundary layer flows with and without pressure gradient, plane wall jet, and flow with separation and reattachment. The calculated results showed good agreement with the direct numerical simulation (DNS) and experimental data. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

A study was made to see if it is possible to enhance the heat transfer in the downstream region of a backward-facing step, where heat transfer is normally deteriorated, by the insertion of a cylinder near the top corner of the step. Cylinder size and streamwise position of the cylinder were kept constant but the cross-stream position of the cylinder was changed in three steps. Results of the heat transfer experiment, flow visualization, and measurement of the averaged and fluctuating flow fields were reported. When the cylinder was mounted at a position, a little higher than the top surface of the step, a jet-like flow pattern emerged in the averaged velocity profile beneath the cylinder and the recirculating flow was intensified. Therefore, the velocity of recirculating flow near the wall is increased at some streamwise positions. Additionally, the velocity fluctuation was intensified not only in the shear layer between the jet-like flow and the recirculating flow regions but also in the near wall region, resulting in the effective augmentation of heat transfer in this case. Therefore, it is concluded that the mounting of a cylinder is effective in the enhancement of deteriorated heat transfer in the recirculating flow region, if its is mounted in a proper position.  相似文献
