An approach of calculating the coupling losses in a coaxial (or annular) waveguide laser resonator is developed by which the computational time is considerably reduced. Computations of the coupling losses for some TE modes of an annular waveguide, as a function of mirror curvature and position, are presented in the limit of large mirror aperture. It is shown that there exist three special configurations to provide low coupling losses. The resonator properties are discussed. The calculating results are useful for design of annular waveguide laser resonators. 相似文献

In a previous paper by the author (Ref. 1), FIR laser resonators with aperture coupling were shown to have resonance effect at the frequency that could be used to enhance the efficiency of the laser. This paper studies this effect over a wide range of laser parameters such as coupling aperture, cavity length and Fresnel Number. Ultra-compact microring resonators, made of high index contrast (HIC)-silicon on insulator (SOI) materials, have become key optical devices in integrated photonics systems. Both computer simulations and actual experiments have showed that coupling loss was a significant contributor to the total losses in ultra-compact microring resonators. In this paper, a computable model derived from step approximation method was present to theoretically determine the coupling loss. Excellent matching results between the model and literatures were achieved. The proposed model can be applied to evaluate the coupling loss for microring resonators with various geometries and guide the design of low loss optical devices based on ultra-compact microring resonators. 相似文献

Dielectric shielded nanoscale patch laser resonators are introduced. Low-index dielectric shield layers surrounding a high-index core are shown to significantly reduce both metal and radiation losses. Structures suitable for both optical and electrical pumping and smaller than the vacuum wavelength in all three dimensions are shown to have a low enough threshold gain to lase at room temperature. Shifting the gain medium core provides control over the radiation pattern of the resonator and enables coupling of the laser light into a waveguide, opening opportunities for chipscale integration. 相似文献

Considering the polarization state of the mode, these losses are generated due to a polarization mismatch at the disc surfaces. Measurements of the polarization of the output beam from a laser containing tilted discs were compared with computer simulations. The losses were calculated for resonators containing discs deviating slightly from the ideal orientation in a random manner, in order to predict the alignment requirements for a multidisc system. A numerical calculation procedure and various large-signal numerical solutions are presented for degenerate four-wave mixing in optical Kerr media, and for phase conjugate resonators using degenerate four-wave mixing. The solutions presented take full account of nonlinear refractive index changes, pump depletion, signal saturation, distributed losses, and possible external mirrors with laser gain. We find that including the nonlinear index change generally causes little change in the reflectivity or power output of degenerate four-wave mixing devices, at least with symmetric pumping. The optimum power output from a phase conjugate resonator with and without a laser gain medium is calculated. The results provide some theoretical guidance for designing phase conjugate resonators. 相似文献

This paper presents the design and test of asymmetric quasioptical resonators for gyrotron applications, where most of the diffraction output coupling comes from the smaller of two mirrors. A computer code based on scalar diffraction theory is used to calculate the resonator losses and the electric field near the mirrors. Resonators with mirror separations approaching confocal have reduced side lobes in the diffraction patterns, which should allow for better power transmission and focusing. Cold tests have been performed at 94 and 141 GHz to measure the quality factor of the asymmetric resonators as a function of mirror separation and mirror misalignment. Typical resonator parameters include 65 cm mirror separation, 1-3% output coupling and 85% of the losses from the small mirror. A half-symmetric resonator with one flat and one curved mirror has also been investigated. The calculated values of Q are in reasonably good agreement with the cold test measurements. 相似文献

A numerical analysis of laser resonators with aberrations is presented. The analysis shows that aberrations lead to large diffraction losses of laser resonators which are laid out to produce diffraction-limited beam quality. The gain calculated for a laser with ring and Fabry-Perot resonators respectively is given in a general formulation which shows clearly the influence of the spatially inhomogeneous saturation due to the standing wave pattern and the resulting Bragg scattering. When selecting a single mode in a Fabry-Perot resonator, the losses necessary to quench the modes are equal to those losses which the selected mode suffers due to the self-induced Bragg grating in the active medium. In a unidirectional ring laser, the losses only need exceed the gain of additional separate gain reservoirs of the modes. Also possible reasons are dealt with which cause stable bidirectional operation in a ring laser with homogeneously broadened gain. 相似文献

Unstable resonators have been widely used in high-power gas lasers as well as solid-state lasers. The phase and the spatial distribution of intensity of these lasers are very important in some applications such as material processing. In this paper, unstable resonators with three different geometries have been characterized numerically and the results have been compared and evaluated. Based on the Fresnel-Kirchhoff integral, the two-dimensional phase and intensity have been calculated for three different positive branch unstable resonators. The results show that the resonators with rectangular geometry have the best performance for near-field as well as far-field intensity, which is more suitable for material processing. The calculations also show that the maximum output power can be extracted from the rectangular resonator with spherical surface, while the circular resonator with spherical surface has minimum output power. The results also show that the laser has a higher divergence for the cylindrical resonator in compare with those for the circular and rectangular resonators. 相似文献
