Boussinesq models describe the phase‐resolved hydrodynamics of unbroken waves and wave‐induced currents in shallow coastal waters. Many enhanced versions of the Boussinesq equations are available in the literature, aiming to improve the representation of linear dispersion and non‐linearity. This paper describes the numerical solution of the extended Boussinesq equations derived by Madsen and Sørensen (Coastal Eng. 1992; 15 :371–388) on Cartesian cut‐cell grids, the aim being to model non‐linear wave interaction with coastal structures. An explicit second‐order MUSCL‐Hancock Godunov‐type finite volume scheme is used to solve the non‐linear and weakly dispersive Boussinesq‐type equations. Interface fluxes are evaluated using an HLLC approximate Riemann solver. A ghost‐cell immersed boundary method is used to update flow information in the smallest cut cells and overcome the time step restriction that would otherwise apply. The model is validated for solitary wave reflection from a vertical wall, diffraction of a solitary wave by a truncated barrier, and solitary wave scattering and diffraction from a vertical circular cylinder. In all cases, the model gives satisfactory predictions in comparison with the published analytical solutions and experimental measurements. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A simple method is proposed for treating curved or irregular boundaries in Cartesian grid shallow flow models. It directly evaluates fictional values in ‘ghost’ cells adjacent to boundary cells and requires no interpolation or generation of cut cells. The boundary treatment is implemented in a dynamically adaptive quadtree grid‐based solver of the hyperbolic shallow water equations and validated against several test cases with analytical or alternative numerical solutions. The method is easy to code, accurate, and demonstrably effective in dealing with irregular computational domains in shallow flow simulations. Results are presented for still water in a basin of complicated geometry, steady hydraulic jump in an open channel with a converging sidewall, wind‐induced circulation in a circular shallow lake, and shock wave diffraction in a channel containing a contraction and expansion. An innovative computational model, developed to simulate high‐Reynolds number flow past circular cylinders in two‐dimensional incompressible viscous flows in external flow fields is described in this paper. The model, based on transient Navier–Stokes equations, can solve the infinite boundary value problems by extracting the boundary effects on a specified finite computational domain, using the projection method. The pressure is assumed to be zero at infinite boundary and the external flow field is simulated using a direct boundary element method (BEM) by solving a pressure Poisson equation. A three‐step finite element method (FEM) is used to solve the momentum equations of the flow. The present model is applied to simulate high‐Reynolds number flow past a single circular cylinder and flow past two cylinders in which one acts as a control cylinder. The simulation results are compared with experimental data and other numerical models and are found to be feasible and satisfactory. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A numerical study on the laminar vortex shedding and wake flow due to a porous‐wrapped solid circular cylinder has been made in this paper. The cylinder is horizontally placed, and is subjected to a uniform cross flow. The aim is to control the vortex shedding and drag force through a thin porous wrapper around a solid cylinder. The flow field is investigated for a wide range of Reynolds number in the laminar regime. The flow in the porous zone is governed by the Darcy–Brinkman–Forchheimer extended model and the Navier–Stokes equations in the fluid region. A control volume approach is adopted for computation of the governing equations along with a second‐order upwind scheme, which is used to discretize the convective terms inside the fluid region. The inclusion of a thin porous wrapper produces a significant reduction in drag and damps the oscillation compared with a solid cylinder. Dependence of Strouhal number and drag coefficient on porous layer thickness at different Reynolds number is analyzed. The dependence of Strouhal number and drag on the permeability of the medium is also examined. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this work, an approach is proposed for solving the 3D shallow water equations with embedded boundaries that are not aligned with the underlying horizontal Cartesian grid. A hybrid cut‐cell/ghost‐cell method is used together with a direction‐splitting implicit solver: Ghost cells are used for the momentum equations in order to prescribe the correct boundary condition at the immersed boundary, while cut cells are used in the continuity equation in order to conserve mass. The resulting scheme is robust, does not suffer any time step limitation for small cut cells, and conserves fluid mass up to machine precision. Moreover, the solver displays a second‐order spatial accuracy, both globally and locally. Comparisons with analytical solutions and reference numerical solutions on curvilinear grids confirm the quality of the method. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Many environmental applications of shallow water flow modelling can be characterized as only slowly varying and everywhere sub‐critical. A simplified finite volume model is therefore developed that is capable of describing pertinent shallow water flow processes more efficiently than the usual Godunov/ Riemann characteristics approaches. The model is tested against a number of analytical and numerical solutions to the governing equations. The model reproduces accurately flow round a circular bend, flow over topography, flow up an initially dry beach and floodwave propagation down a meandering river reach, with mass conservative solutions. We present numerical results for in‐line and cross‐flow vibrations of a circular cylinder, which is immersed in a uniform flow and is elastically supported by damper‐spring systems to compute vibrations of a rigid cylinder. In the case of a circular cylinder with a low Scruton number, it is well‐known that two types of self‐excited vibrations appear in the in‐line direction in the range of low reduced velocities. On the other hand, a cross‐flow vibration of the circular cylinder can be excited in the range of high reduced velocities. Therefore, we compute the flow‐induced vibrations of the circular cylinder in the wide range of the reduced velocities at low and high Scruton numbers and discuss about excitation mechanisms in the in‐line and cross‐flow directions. This paper describes an adaptive quadtree grid‐based solver of the depth‐averaged shallow water equations. The model is designed to approximate flows in complicated large‐scale shallow domains while focusing on important smaller‐scale localized flow features. Quadtree grids are created automatically by recursive subdivision of a rectangle about discretized boundary, bathymetric or flow‐related seeding points. It can be fitted in a fractal‐like sense by local grid refinement to any boundary, however distorted, provided absolute convergence to the boundary is not required and a low level of stepped boundary can be tolerated. Grid information is stored as a tree data structure, with a novel indexing system used to link information on the quadtree to a finite volume discretization of the governing equations. As the flow field develops, the grids may be adapted using a parameter based on vorticity and grid cell size. The numerical model is validated using standard benchmark tests, including seiches, Coriolis‐induced set‐up, jet‐forced flow in a circular reservoir, and wetting and drying. Wind‐induced flow in the Nichupté Lagoon, México, provides an illustrative example of an application to flow in extremely complicated multi‐connected regions. This paper presents details of a second‐order accurate, Godunov‐type numerical model of the two‐dimensional shallow water equations (SWEs) written in matrix form and discretized using finite volumes. Roe's flux function is used for the convection terms and a non‐linear limiter is applied to prevent unwanted spurious oscillations. A new mathematical formulation is presented, which inherently balances flux gradient and source terms. It is, therefore, suitable for cases where the bathymetry is non‐uniform, unlike other formulations given in the literature based on Roe's approximate Riemann solver. The model is based on hierarchical quadtree (Q‐tree) grids, which adapt to inherent flow parameters, such as magnitude of the free surface gradient and depth‐averaged vorticity. Validation tests include wind‐induced circulation in a dish‐shaped basin, two‐dimensional frictionless rectangular and circular dam‐breaks, an oblique hydraulic jump, and jet‐forced flow in a circular reservoir. It is well known from a lot of experimental data that fluid forces acting on two tandem circular cylinders are quite different from those acting on a single circular cylinder. Therefore, we first present numerical results for fluid forces acting on two tandem circular cylinders, which are mounted at various spacings in a smooth flow, and second we present numerical results for flow-induced vibrations of the upstream circular cylinder in the tandem arrangement. The two circular cylinders are arranged at close spacing in a flow field. The upstream circular cylinder is elastically placed by damper-spring systems and moves in both the in-line and cross-flow directions. In such models, each circular cylinder is assumed as a rigid body. On the other hand, we do not introduce a turbulent model such as the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) or Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) models into the numerical scheme to compute the fluid flow. Our numerical procedure to capture the flow-induced vibration phenomena of the upstream circular cylinder is treated as a fluid-structure interaction problem in which the ideas of weak coupling is taken into consideration.  相似文献

A high‐order difference method based multiphase model is proposed to simulate nonlinear interactions between water wave and submerged coastal structures. The model is based on the Navier–Stokes equations using a constrained interpolation profile (CIP) method for the flow solver, and employs an immersed boundary method (IBM) for the treatment of wave–structure interactions. A more accurate interface capturing scheme, the volume of fluid/weighed line interface calculation (VOF/WLIC) scheme, is adopted as the interface capturing method. A series of computations are performed to verify the application of the model for simulations of fluid interaction with various structures. These problems include flow over a fixed cylinder, water entry of a circular cylinder and solitary waves passing various submerged coastal structures. Computations are compared with the available analytical, experimental and other numerical results and good agreement is obtained. The results of this study demonstrate the accuracy and applications of the proposed model to simulate the nonlinear flow phenomena and capture the complex free surface flow.

We investigate in detail the passive control of vortex-induced vibrations of a freely oscillating circular cylinder using a non-linear energy sink consisting of a secondary system having linear damping and an essential non-linear cubic stiffness. The loads on the cylinder are calculated using a direct numerical simulation of the incompressible flow over the cylinder using a parallel computational fluid dynamics code. A strongly coupled fluid structure control numerical model is used to determine the responses of the cylinder and the sink as well as the flow. We vary the sink parameters (mass and damping) and determine their effects on the response of the coupled system. We find multiple stable responses of the coupled system for different mass ratios and damping coefficient of the sink, depending on the initial conditions.  相似文献

This work investigates a high‐order numerical method which is suitable for performing large‐eddy simulations, particularly those containing wall‐bounded regions which are considered on stretched curvilinear meshes. Spatial derivatives are represented by a sixth‐order compact approximation that is used in conjunction with a tenth‐order non‐dispersive filter. The scheme employs a time‐implicit approximately factored finite‐difference algorithm, and applies Newton‐like subiterations to achieve second‐order temporal and sixth‐order spatial accuracy. Both the Smagorinsky and dynamic subgrid‐scale stress models are incorporated in the computations, and are used for comparison along with simulations where no model is employed. Details of the method are summarized, and a series of classic validating computations are performed. These include the decay of compressible isotropic turbulence, turbulent channel flow, and the subsonic flow past a circular cylinder. For each of these cases, it was found that the method was robust and provided an accurate means of describing the flowfield, based upon comparisons with previous existing numerical results and experimental data. Incompressible high-Reynolds-number flows around a circular cylinder are analyzed by direct integration of the Navier-Stokes equations using finite-difference method. A generalized coordinate system is used so that a sufficient number of grid points are distributed in the boundary layer and the wake. A numerical scheme which suppresses non-linear instability for calculations of high-Reynolds-number flows is developed. The computation of an impulsively started flow at Re = 1200 is compared with corresponding experimental observations, and excellent agreements are obtained.A series of computations are carried out on the flow around a circular cylinder with surface roughness. The height of the roughness in these computations is 0.5% of the diameter. The range of Reynolds numbers is from 103 to 105; no turbulence model is employed. Sharp reduction of drag coefficient is observed near Re = 2 × 104, which indicates that the critical Reynolds number is captured in the present computation.  相似文献

An algorithm for a time accurate incompressible Navier–Stokes solver on an unstructured grid is presented. The algorithm uses a second order, three‐point, backward difference formula for the physical time marching. For each time step, a divergence free flow field is obtained based on an artificial compressibility method. An implicit method with a local time step is used to accelerate the convergence for the pseudotime iteration. To validate the code, an unsteady laminar flow over a circular cylinder at a Reynolds number of 200 is calculated. The results are compared with available experimental and numerical data and good agreements are achieved. Using the developed unsteady code, an interaction of a Karman vortex street with an elliptical leading edge is simulated. The incident Karman vortex street is generated by a circular cylinder located upstream. A clustering to the path of the vortices is achieved easily due to flexibility of an unstructured grid. Details of the interaction mechanism are analysed by investigating evolutions of vortices. Characteristics of the interactions are compared for large‐ and small‐scale vortex streets. Different patterns of the interaction are observed for those two vortex streets and the observation is in agreement with experiment. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A multi‐entropy‐level lattice Boltzmann model for two‐dimensional sound wave equation in the small perturbation flows is presented. In this model, we used higher‐order moment method, multi‐scale technique and the Chapman–Enskog expansion, and multi‐entropy‐level to obtain sound wave equation with isentropic equation. As numerical examples, the Doppler effects in the sound wave propagation, the sound scattering from circular cylinder are simulated. The numerical results show that this model can be used to simulate sound wave propagation. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Finite difference solutions have been obtained by the perturbation method to investigate the influence of shear thinning and elasticity on the flow around an inclined circular cylinder of finite length in a uniform flow. In this numerical analysis a generalized upper-convected Maxwell model, in which the viscosity changes according to the Cross model, has been used. The local flow over the cylinder is only slightly deflected. However, in the wake flow behind the cylinder the particle path is remarkably influenced by the axial flow and rapidly flows up parallel to the cylinder's axis. Then it gradually rejoins direction of the incoming flow. It is found that viscoelastic fluids are prone to flow axially in the vicinity of the cylinder. The numerical predictions generally agree with the flow visualization results. The numerical solutions also demonstrate that elasticity has a strong effect on the velocity profile especially around both ends of the cylinder; elasticity increases the asymmetric profiles of both circumferential velocity and axial velocity with respect to equal to 90° and decreases a difference in the circumferential velocity between the windward end and the leeward end.For non-Newtonian fluids, the length of the wake flow is influenced by not only the Reynolds number but also the cylinder diameter and it is larger for the cylinder with the smaller diameter at the same Reynolds number.Partly presented at the 9th Australasian Fluid Mechanics Conference, University of Auckland, New Zealand, 8–12 December, 1986  相似文献
