The steady Von Kármán flow and heat transfer of an electrically conducting non-Newtonian fluid is extended to the case where the disk surface admits partial slip. The fluid is subjected to an external uniform magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the disk. The constitutive equation of the non-Newtonian fluid is modeled by that for a Reiner–Rivlin fluid. The momentum equations give rise to highly non-linear boundary value problem. Numerical solutions for the governing non-linear equations are obtained over the entire range of the physical parameters. The effects of slip, magnetic parameter and non-Newtonian fluid characteristics on the velocity and temperature fields are discussed in detail and shown graphically. Emphasis has been laid to study the effects of viscous dissipation and Joule heating on the thermal boundary layer. It is interesting to find that the non-Newtonian cross-viscous parameter has an opposite effect to that of the slip and the magnetic parameter on the velocity and the temperature fields.

The steady flow and heat transfer arising due to the rotation of a non-Newtonian fluid at a larger distance from a stationary disk is extended to the case where the disk surface admits partial slip. The constitutive equation of the non-Newtonian fluid is modeled by that for a Reiner–Rivlin fluid. The fluid is subjected to an external uniform magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the disk. The momentum equation gives rise to a highly nonlinear boundary value problem. Numerical solution of the governing nonlinear equations are obtained over the entire range of the physical parameters. The effects of slip, non-Newtonian fluid characteristics and the magnetic interaction parameter on the momentum boundary layer and thermal boundary layer are discussed in detail and shown graphically. It is observed that slip has prominent effects on the velocity and temperature fields.

The fully developed electrically conducting micropolar fluid flow and heat transfer along a semi-infinite vertical porous moving plate is studied including the effect of viscous heating and in the presence of a magnetic field applied transversely to the direction of the flow. The Darcy-Brinkman-Forchheimer model which includes the effects of boundary and inertia forces is employed. The differential equations governing the problem have been transformed by a similarity transformation into a system of non-dimensional differential equations which are solved numerically by element free Galerkin method. Profiles for velocity, microrotation and temperature are presented for a wide range of plate velocity, viscosity ratio, Darcy number, Forchhimer number, magnetic field parameter, heat absorption parameter and the micropolar parameter. The skin friction and Nusselt numbers at the plates are also shown graphically. The present problem has significant applications in chemical engineering, materials processing, solar porous wafer absorber systems and metallurgy.

In this article, the flutter vibrations of fluid-conveying thin-walled nanotubes subjected to magnetic field is investigated. For modeling fluid structure interaction, the nonlocal strain gradient thin-walled Timoshenko beam model, Knudsen number and magnetic nanoflow are assumed. The Knudsen number is considered to analyze the slip boundary conditions between the fluid-flow and the nanotube's wall, and the average velocity correction parameter is utilized to earn the modified flow velocity of nano-flow. Based on the extended Hamilton's principle, the size-dependent governing equations and associated boundary conditions are derived. The coupled equations of motion are transformed to a general eigenvalue problem by applying extended Galerkin technique under the cantilever end conditions. The influences of nonlocal parameter, strain gradient length scale, magnetic nanoflow, longitudinal magnetic field, Knudsen number on the eigenvalues and critical flutter velocity of the nanotubes are studied.

A numerical solution is developed for the viscous, incompressible, magnetohydrodynamic flow in a rotating channel comprising two infinite parallel plates and containing a Darcian porous medium, the plates lying in the xz plane, under constant pressure gradient. The system is subjected to a strong, inclined magnetic field orientated to the positive direction of the y-axis (rotational axis, normal to the xz plane). The Navier–Stokes flow equations for a general rotating hydromagnetic flow are reduced to a pair of linear, viscous partial differential equations neglecting convective acceleration terms, for primary velocity (u′) and secondary velocity (v′) where these velocities are directed along the x and y axes. Only viscous terms are retained in the momenta equations. The model is non-dimensionalized and shown to be controlled by a number of dimensionless parameters. The resulting dimensionless ordinary differential equations are solved using a robust numerical method, Network Simulation Methodology. Full details of the numerics are provided. The present solutions are also benchmarked against the analytical solutions presented recently by Ghosh and Pop [Ghosh SK, Pop I. An analytical approach to MHD plasma behaviour of a rotating environment in the presence of an inclined magnetic field as compared to excitation frequency. Int J Appl Mech Eng 2006;11(4):845–856] for the case of a purely fluid medium (infinite permeability). We study graphically the influence of Hartmann number (Ha, magnetic field parameter), Ekman number (Ek, rotation parameter), Hall current parameter (Nh), Darcy number (Da, permeability parameter), pressure gradient (Np) and also magnetic field inclination (θ) on primary and secondary velocity fields. Additionally we investigate the effects of these multiphysical parameters on the dimensionless shear stresses at the plates. Both primary and secondary velocity are seen to be increased with a rise in Darcy number, owing to a simultaneous reduction in Darcian drag force. Primary velocity is seen to decrease with an increase in Hall current parameter (Nh) but there is a decrease in secondary velocity. The study finds important applications in magnetic materials processing, hydromagnetic plasma energy generators, magneto-geophysics and planetary astrophysics.

The interaction of an externally imposed magnetic and electric field on the laminar flow of a conducting fluid in a channel is studied using computational techniques. The Navier-Stokes equations and the equations describing the electromagnetic field are solved simultaneously in a single control volume-type computational fluid dynamic code, in a moderate Hartmann number and interaction parameter regime. The flow considered is two-dimensional, with an imposed magnetic field acting in the third dimension over the central region of the channel and decaying exponentially in the remainder. A pair of electrodes placed at right angles to the magnetic field exercises control over the resultant Lorentz force and hence the velocity profile shape. This configuration has application in direct-current electromagnetic pumps or, conversely, electromagnetic brakes. The initial parabolic flow profile acquires an M-shape / W-shape mode in the magnetic field fringe regions, corresponding to a pump / brake. A novel coupled procedure is described to model magnetohydrodynamic phenomena and is used to explore the effects of the Reynolds number, interaction parameter, and applied voltage on the pump / brake configuration.

The entrained flow and heat transfer of a non-Newtonian third grade fluid due to a linearly stretching surface with partial slip is considered. The partial slip is controlled by a dimensionless slip factor, which varies between zero (total adhesion) and infinity (full slip). Suitable similarity transformations are used to reduce the resulting highly nonlinear partial differential equations into ordinary differential equations. The issue of paucity of boundary conditions is addressed and an effective second order numerical scheme has been adopted to solve the obtained differential equations even without augmenting any extra boundary conditions. The important finding in this communication is the combined effects of the partial slip and the third grade fluid parameter on the velocity, skin-friction coefficient and the temperature field. It is interesting to find that the slip and the third grade fluid parameter have opposite effects on the velocity and the thermal boundary layers.

The aligned magnetic effects on a steady laminar, viscous, incompressible, conducting fluid down an open inclined channel bounded below by a bed of varying permeability has been studied when the free surface is exposed to atmospheric pressure. Beavers and Joseph slip condition at the interface of the free flow region and the fluid flow in the porous bed and the Darcy’s law in the porous medium have been used. The expressions for velocity, magnetic strength and the mass flow across the cross-section of the channel are obtained.
