Elementary operators on self-adjoint operators

Let H be a Hilbert space and let A and B be standard ∗-operator algebras on H. Denote by As and Bs the set of all self-adjoint operators in A and B, respectively. Assume that and are surjective maps such that M(AM^∗(B)A)=M(A)BM(A) and M^∗(BM(A)B)=M^∗(B)AM^∗(B) for every pair A∈As, B∈Bs. Then there exist an invertible bounded linear or conjugate-linear operator and a constant c∈{−1,1} such that M(A)=cTAT^∗, A∈As, and M^∗(B)=cT^∗BT, B∈Bs.     

Hahn-Banach extension operators and spaces of operators

On operators commuting with Toeplitz operators modulo the compact operators

We prove that an operator on H² of the disc commutes modulo the compacts with all analytic Toeplitz operators if and only if it is a compact perturbation of a Toeplitz operator with symbol in H^∞ + C. Consequently, the essential commutant of the whole Toeplitz algebra is the algebra of Toeplitz operators with symbol in QC. The image in the Calkin algebra of the Toeplitz operators with symbol in H^∞ + C is a maximal abelian algebra. These results lead to a characterization of automorphisms of the algebra of compact perturbations of the analytic Toeplitz operators.     

Elementary operators on algebras of unbounded operators

Summary Structural results about elementary operators of length one, local elementary operators and injectivity preserving maps are proved. These are generalizations of results concerning algebras of bounded operators on Banach spaces to algebras of unbounded operators on Hilbert spaces.     

Homogeneous operators and homogeneous integral operators

We introduce and study in a general setting the concept of homogeneity of an operator and, in particular, the notion of homogeneity of an integral operator. In the latter case, homogeneous kernels of such operators are also studied. The concept of homogeneity is associated with transformations of a measure—measure dilations, which are most natural in the context of our general research scheme. For the study of integral operators, the notions of weak and strong homogeneity of the kernel are introduced. The weak case is proved to generate a homogeneous operator in the sense of our definition, while the stronger condition corresponds to the most relevant specific examples—classes of homogeneous integral operators on various metric spaces—and allows us to obtain an explicit general form for the kernels of such operators. The examples given in the article—various specific cases—illustrate general statements and results given in the paper and at the same time are of interest in their own way.     

On operators commuting with Toeplitz operators modulo the finite rank operators

Let X be a bounded linear operator on the Hardy space H² of the unit disk. We show that if is of finite rank for every inner function θ, then X=T_?+F for some Toeplitz operator T_? and some finite rank operator F on H². This solves a variant of an open question where the compactness replaces the finite rank conditions.     

Nilpotent operators similar to irreducible operators

We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the nilpotent operators to be similiar to irreducible operators, and give an answer to D. A. Herrero Conjectures for nilpotent operators.     

Normal operators similar to irreducible operators

A complete characterization of normal operators which are similar to irreducible operators and some related results are given.     

Integrable operators and the squares of Hankel operators

Integrable operators arise in random matrix theory, where they describe the asymptotic eigenvalue distribution of large self-adjoint random matrices from the generalized unitary ensembles. This paper gives sufficient conditions for an integrable operator to be the square of a Hankel operator, and applies the condition to the Airy, associated Laguerre, modified Bessel and Whittaker functions.     

Rank one operators and norm of elementary operators

Let A be a standard operator algebra acting on a (real or complex) normed space E. For two n-tuples A = (A₁, … , A_n) and B = (B₁, … , B_n) of elements in A, we define the elementary operator R_A,B on A by the relation for all X in A. For a single operator A∈A, we define the two particular elementary operators L_A and R_A on A by L_A(X) = AX and R_A(X) = XA, for every X in A. We denote by d(R_A,B) the supremum of the norm of R_A,B(X) over all unit rank one operators on E. In this note, we shall characterize: (i) the supremun d(R_A,B), (ii) the relation , (iii) the relation d(L_A − R_B) = ∥A∥ + ∥B∥, (iv) the relation d(L_AR_B − L_BR_A) = 2∥A∥ + ∥B∥. Moreover, we shall show the lower estimate d(L_A − R_B) ? max{sup_λ∈V(B)∥A − λI∥, sup_λ∈V(A)∥B − λI∥} (where V(X) is the algebraic numerical range of X in A).     

Compactness properties of operators dominated by AM-compact operators

We study several properties about the problem of domination in the class of positive AM-compact operators, and we obtain some interesting consequences on positive compact operators. Also, we give a sufficient condition under which a Banach lattice is discrete.
