A local coloring of a graph G is a function c:V(G)→N having the property that for each set SV(G) with 2≤|S|≤3, there exist vertices u,vS such that |c(u)−c(v)|≥mS, where mS is the number of edges of the induced subgraph 〈S〉. The maximum color assigned by a local coloring c to a vertex of G is called the value of c and is denoted by χ?(c). The local chromatic number of G is χ?(G)=min{χ?(c)}, where the minimum is taken over all local colorings c of G. The local coloring of graphs was introduced by Chartrand et al. [G. Chartrand, E. Salehi, P. Zhang, On local colorings of graphs, Congressus Numerantium 163 (2003) 207-221]. In this paper the local coloring of Kneser graphs is studied and the local chromatic number of the Kneser graph K(n,k) for some values of n and k is determined.  相似文献

In a circular r-colouring game on G, Alice and Bob take turns colouring the vertices of G with colours from the circle S(r) of perimeter r. Colours assigned to adjacent vertices need to have distance at least 1 in S(r). Alice wins the game if all vertices are coloured, and Bob wins the game if some uncoloured vertices have no legal colour. The circular game chromatic number χcg(G) of G is the infimum of those real numbers r for which Alice has a winning strategy in the circular r-colouring game on G. This paper proves that for any graph G, , where is the game colouring number of G. This upper bound is shown to be sharp for forests. It is also shown that for any graph G, χcg(G)≤2χa(G)(χa(G)+1), where χa(G) is the acyclic chromatic number of G. We also determine the exact value of the circular game chromatic number of some special graphs, including complete graphs, paths, and cycles.  相似文献

Concise proofs for adjacent vertex-distinguishing total colorings   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Let G=(V,E) be a graph and f:(VE)→[k] be a proper total k-coloring of G. We say that f is an adjacent vertex- distinguishing total coloring if for any two adjacent vertices, the set of colors appearing on the vertex and incident edges are different. We call the smallest k for which such a coloring of G exists the adjacent vertex-distinguishing total chromatic number, and denote it by χat(G). Here we provide short proofs for an upper bound on the adjacent vertex-distinguishing total chromatic number of graphs of maximum degree three, and the exact values of χat(G) when G is a complete graph or a cycle.  相似文献

Equitable colorings of Kronecker products of graphs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
For a positive integer k, a graph G is equitably k-colorable if there is a mapping f:V(G)→{1,2,…,k} such that f(x)≠f(y) whenever xyE(G) and ||f−1(i)|−|f−1(j)||≤1 for 1≤i<jk. The equitable chromatic number of a graph G, denoted by χ=(G), is the minimum k such that G is equitably k-colorable. The equitable chromatic threshold of a graph G, denoted by , is the minimum t such that G is equitably k-colorable for kt. The current paper studies equitable chromatic numbers of Kronecker products of graphs. In particular, we give exact values or upper bounds on χ=(G×H) and when G and H are complete graphs, bipartite graphs, paths or cycles.  相似文献

Let α(G) and χ(G) denote the independence number and chromatic number of a graph G, respectively. Let G×H be the direct product graph of graphs G and H. We show that if G and H are circular graphs, Kneser graphs, or powers of cycles, then α(G×H)=max{α(G)|V(H)|,α(H)|V(G)|} and χ(G×H)=min{χ(G),χ(H)}.  相似文献

For graphs G and H, let GH denote their Cartesian sum. We investigate the chromatic number and the circular chromatic number for GH. It has been proved that for any graphs G and H, . It has been conjectured that for any graphs G and H, . We confirm this conjecture for graphs G and H with special values of χc(G) and χc(H). These results improve previously known bounds on the corresponding coloring parameters for the Cartesian sum of graphs.  相似文献

Let G be any graph, and also let Δ(G), χ(G) and α(G) denote the maximum degree, the chromatic number and the independence number of G, respectively. A chromatic coloring of G is a proper coloring of G using χ(G) colors. A color class in a proper coloring of G is maximum if it has size α(G). In this paper, we prove that if a graph G (not necessarily connected) satisfies χ(G)≥Δ(G), then there exists a chromatic coloring of G in which some color class is maximum. This cannot be guaranteed if χ(G)<Δ(G). We shall also give some other extensions.  相似文献

A well-established generalization of graph coloring is the concept of list coloring. In this setting, each vertex v of a graph G is assigned a list L(v) of k colors and the goal is to find a proper coloring c of G with c(v)∈L(v). The smallest integer k for which such a coloring c exists for every choice of lists is called the list chromatic number of G and denoted by χl(G).We study list colorings of Cartesian products of graphs. We show that unlike in the case of ordinary colorings, the list chromatic number of the product of two graphs G and H is not bounded by the maximum of χl(G) and χl(H). On the other hand, we prove that χl(G×H)?min{χl(G)+col(H),col(G)+χl(H)}-1 and construct examples of graphs G and H for which our bound is tight.  相似文献

The total chromatic number χT(G) of a graph G is the least number of colors needed to color the vertices and the edges of G such that no adjacent or incident elements receive the same color. The Total Coloring Conjecture(TCC) states that for every simple graph G, χT(G)≤Δ(G)+2. In this paper, we show that χT(G)=Δ(G)+1 for all pseudo-Halin graphs with Δ(G)=4 and 5.  相似文献

For a connected graph G of order p≥2, a set SV(G) is a geodetic set of G if each vertex vV(G) lies on an x-y geodesic for some elements x and y in S. The minimum cardinality of a geodetic set of G is defined as the geodetic number of G, denoted by g(G). A geodetic set of cardinality g(G) is called a g-set of G. A connected geodetic set of G is a geodetic set S such that the subgraph G[S] induced by S is connected. The minimum cardinality of a connected geodetic set of G is the connected geodetic number of G and is denoted by gc(G). A connected geodetic set of cardinality gc(G) is called a gc-set of G. A connected geodetic set S in a connected graph G is called a minimal connected geodetic set if no proper subset of S is a connected geodetic set of G. The upper connected geodetic number is the maximum cardinality of a minimal connected geodetic set of G. We determine bounds for and determine the same for some special classes of graphs. For positive integers r,d and nd+1 with rd≤2r, there exists a connected graph G with , and . Also, for any positive integers 2≤a<bc, there exists a connected graph G such that g(G)=a, gc(G)=b and . A subset T of a gc-set S is called a forcing subset for S if S is the unique gc-set containing T. A forcing subset for S of minimum cardinality is a minimum forcing subset of S. The forcing connected geodetic number of S, denoted by fc(S), is the cardinality of a minimum forcing subset of S. The forcing connected geodetic number of G, denoted by fc(G), is fc(G)=min{fc(S)}, where the minimum is taken over all gc-sets S in G. It is shown that for every pair a,b of integers with 0≤ab−4, there exists a connected graph G such that fc(G)=a and gc(G)=b.  相似文献

By applying a discharging method, we give new lower bounds for the sizes of edge chromatic critical graphs for small maximum degrees. Furthermore, it is also proved that if G is a graph embeddable in a surface S with characteristic cS=−4 or −5 or −6, then G is class one if its maximum degree Δ≥10 or 11 or 12 respectively.  相似文献

LetG=(V, E) be an undirected graph andc any vector in ℤ V(G) +. Denote byχ(G c) (resp.η(G c)) the chromatic number (resp. fractional chromatic number) ofG with respect toc. We study graphs for whichχ(G c)−[η(G c)]⩽1. We show that for the class of graphs satisfyingχ(G c)=[η(G c)] (a class generalizing perfect graphs), an analogue of the Duplication Lemma does not hold. We also describe a 2-vertex cut decomposition procedure related to the integer decomposition property. We use this procedure to show thatχ(G c)=[η(G c)] for series-parallel graphs andχ(G c)⩽[η(G c)]+1 for graphs that do not have the 4-wheel as a minor. For every pair of vertices u,v in a graph, a u-v geodesic is a shortest path from u to v. For a graph G, let IG[u,v] denote the set of all vertices lying on a u-v geodesic. Let SV(G) and IG[S] denote the union of all IG[u,v] for all u,vS. A subset SV(G) is a convex set of G if IG[S]=S. A convex hull [S]G of S is a minimum convex set containing S. A subset S of V(G) is a hull set of G if [S]G=V(G). The hull number h(G) of a graph G is the minimum cardinality of a hull set in G. A subset S of V(G) is a geodetic set if IG[S]=V(G). The geodetic number g(G) of a graph G is the minimum cardinality of a geodetic set in G. A subset FV(G) is called a forcing hull (or geodetic) subset of G if there exists a unique minimum hull (or geodetic) set containing F. The cardinality of a minimum forcing hull subset in G is called the forcing hull number fh(G) of G and the cardinality of a minimum forcing geodetic subset in G is called the forcing geodetic number fg(G) of G. In the paper, we construct some 2-connected graph G with (fh(G),fg(G))=(0,0),(1,0), or (0,1), and prove that, for any nonnegative integers a, b, and c with a+b≥2, there exists a 2-connected graph G with (fh(G),fg(G),h(G),g(G))=(a,b,a+b+c,a+2b+c) or (a,2a+b,a+b+c,2a+2b+c). These results confirm a conjecture of Chartrand and Zhang proposed in [G. Chartrand, P. Zhang, The forcing hull number of a graph, J. Combin. Math. Combin. Comput. 36 (2001) 81-94].  相似文献

Let G be a graph embedded in a surface of characteristic zero with maximum degree Δ. The edge-face chromatic number χef(G) of G is the least number of colors such that any two adjacent edges, adjacent faces, incident edge and face have different colors. In this paper, we prove that χef(G)≤Δ+1 if Δ≥13, χef(G)≤Δ+2 if Δ≥12, χef(G)≤Δ+3 if Δ≥4, and χef(G)≤7 if Δ≤3.  相似文献

Given a set D of a cyclic group C, we study the chromatic number of the circulant graph G(C,D) whose vertex set is C, and there is an edge ij whenever ijD∪−D. For a fixed set D={a,b,c:a<b<c} of positive integers, we compute the chromatic number of circulant graphs G(ZN,D) for all N≥4bc. We also show that, if there is a total order of D such that the greatest common divisors of the initial segments form a decreasing sequence, then the chromatic number of G(Z,D) is at most 4. In particular, the chromatic number of a circulant graph on ZN with respect to a minimum generating set D is at most 4. The results are based on the study of the so-called regular chromatic number, an easier parameter to compute. The paper also surveys known results on the chromatic number of circulant graphs.  相似文献

This paper deals with b-colorings of a graph G, that is, proper colorings in which for each color c, there exists at least one vertex colored by c such that its neighbors are colored by each other color. The b-chromatic numberb(G) of a graph G is the maximum number of colors for which G has a b-coloring. It is easy to see that every graph G has a b-coloring using χ(G) colors. We say that G is b-continuous iff for each k, χ(G)?k?b(G), there exists a b-coloring with k colors. It is well known that not all graphs are b-continuous. We call b-spectrumSb(G) of G to be the set of integers k for which there is a b-coloring of G by k colors. We show that for any finite integer set I, there exists a graph whose b-spectrum is I and we investigate the complexity of the problem of deciding whether a graph G is b-continuous, even if b-colorings using χ(G) and b(G) colors are given.  相似文献

In this article, we consider the circular chromatic number χc(G) of series‐parallel graphs G. It is well known that series‐parallel graphs have chromatic number at most 3. Hence, their circular chromatic numbers are at most 3. If a series‐parallel graph G contains a triangle, then both the chromatic number and the circular chromatic number of G are indeed equal to 3. We shall show that if a series‐parallel graph G has girth at least 2 ⌊(3k − 1)/2⌋, then χc(G) ≤ 4k/(2k − 1). The special case k = 2 of this result implies that a triangle free series‐parallel graph G has circular chromatic number at most 8/3. Therefore, the circular chromatic number of a series‐parallel graph (and of a K4‐minor free graph) is either 3 or at most 8/3. This is in sharp contrast to recent results of Moser [5] and Zhu [14], which imply that the circular chromatic number of K5‐minor free graphs are precisely all rational numbers in the interval [2, 4]. We shall also construct examples to demonstrate the sharpness of the bound given in this article. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Graph Theory 33: 14–24, 2000  相似文献

When we wish to compute lower bounds for the chromatic number χ(G) of a graph G, it is of interest to know something about the ‘chromatic forcing number’ fχ(G), which is defined to be the least number of vertices in a subgraph H of G such that χ(H) = χ(G). We show here that for random graphs Gn,p with n vertices, fχ(Gn,p) is almost surely at least (12?ε)n, despite say the fact that the largest complete subgraph of Gn,p has only about log n vertices.  相似文献

A maximum independent set of vertices in a graph is a set of pairwise nonadjacent vertices of largest cardinality α. Plummer [Some covering concepts in graphs, J. Combin. Theory 8 (1970) 91-98] defined a graph to be well-covered, if every independent set is contained in a maximum independent set of G. Every well-covered graph G without isolated vertices has a perfect [1,2]-factor FG, i.e. a spanning subgraph such that each component is 1-regular or 2-regular. Here, we characterize all well-covered graphs G satisfying α(G)=α(FG) for some perfect [1,2]-factor FG. This class contains all well-covered graphs G without isolated vertices of order n with α?(n-1)/2, and in particular all very well-covered graphs.  相似文献

The packing chromatic number χρ(G) of a graph G is the smallest integer k such that the vertex set of G can be partitioned into packings with pairwise different widths. Several lower and upper bounds are obtained for the packing chromatic number of Cartesian products of graphs. It is proved that the packing chromatic number of the infinite hexagonal lattice lies between 6 and 8. Optimal lower and upper bounds are proved for subdivision graphs. Trees are also considered and monotone colorings are introduced.  相似文献
