Daily values of solar global ultraviolet (UV) B and UVA irradiation as well as erythemal irradiation have been parameterized to be estimated from pyranometer measurements of daily global and diffuse irradiation as well as from atmospheric column ozone. Data recorded at the Meteorological Observatory Potsdam (52 degrees N, 107 m asl) in Germany over the time period 1997-2000 have been used to derive sets of regression coefficients. The validation of the method against independent data sets of measured UV irradiation shows that the parameterization provides a gain of information for UVB, UVA and erythemal irradiation referring to their averages. A comparison between parameterized daily UV irradiation and independent values of UV irradiation measured at a mountain station in southern Germany (Meteorological Observatory Hohenpeissenberg at 48 degrees N, 977 m asl) indicates that the parameterization also holds even under completely different climatic conditions. On a long-term average (1953-2000), parameterized annual UV irradiation values are 15% and 21% higher for UVA and UVB, respectively, at Hohenpeissenberg than they are at Potsdam. Daily global and diffuse irradiation measured at 28 weather stations of the Deutscher Wetterdienst German Radiation Network and grid values of column ozone from the EPTOMS satellite experiment served as inputs to calculate the estimates of the spatial distribution of daily and annual values of UV irradiation across Germany. Using daily values of global and diffuse irradiation recorded at Potsdam since 1937 as well as atmospheric column ozone measured since 1964 at the same site, estimates of daily and annual UV irradiation have been derived for this site over the period from 1937 through 2000, which include the effects of changes in cloudiness, in aerosols and, at least for the period of ozone measurements from 1964 to 2000, in atmospheric ozone. It is shown that the extremely low ozone values observed mainly after the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991 have substantially enhanced UVB irradiation in the first half of the 1990s. According to the measurements and calculations, the nonlinear long-term changes observed between 1968 and 2000 amount to +4%, ..., +5% for annual global irradiation and UVA irradiation mainly because of changing cloudiness and + 14%, ..., +15% for UVB and erythemal irradiation because of both changing cloudiness and decreasing column ozone. At the mountain site, Hohenpeissenberg, measured global irradiation and parameterized UVA irradiation decreased during the same time period by -3%, ..., -4%, probably because of the enhanced occurrence and increasing optical thickness of clouds, whereas UVB and erythemal irradiation derived by the parameterization have increased by +3%, ..., +4% because of the combined effect of clouds and decreasing ozone. The parameterizations described here should be applicable to other regions with similar atmospheric and geographic conditions, whereas for regions with significantly different climatic conditions, such as high mountainous areas and arctic or tropical regions, the representativeness of the regression coefficients would have to be approved. It is emphasized here that parameterizations, as the one described in this article, cannot replace measurements of solar UV radiation, but they can use existing measurements of solar global and diffuse radiation as well as data on atmospheric ozone to provide estimates of UV irradiation in regions and over time periods for which UV measurements are not available.  相似文献

Diffuse solar UV radiation and implications for preventing human eye damage   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Ocular UV exposure is a function of both the direct and diffuse components of solar radiation. Broadband global and diffuse UV measurements were made in the morning, noon and afternoon. Thirty sets of measurements were made in summer and 50 in each of the other seasons at each of the periods in full sun. Corresponding sets were made in the shade of Australian evergreen trees: 42 trees in summer and 50 in each of the other seasons. The percentage diffuse UV was higher for the shorter 320-400 nm range (UVB) than for 280-320 nm (UVA). The percentage diffuse UVB ranged from 23 to 59%, whereas the percentage diffuse UVA ranged from 17 to 31%. The percentage diffuse UV was lower at noon than in the morning and afternoon with the difference more pronounced for the UVB. The average percentage diffuse UVB over all the measurements in the tree shade for the morning, noon and afternoon was 62, 58 and 71%, respectively, and the average percentage diffuse UVA was 52, 51 and 59%, respectively.  相似文献

Abstract— The amount of solar radiation intercepted by an object depends on the orientation of the object with respect to the sun and the angular distribution of the diffuse component of solar radiation, which is commonly considered to be approximately isotropic. The angular distribution of the diffuse UV, visible and near-infrared insolation was measured at several solar zenith angles between 32° and 68° under cloudless skies at Lauder, New Zealand (45S), and shown to be anisotropic. The diffuse solar UV radiation increases markedly with solar elevation and is a large proportion of the total UV irradiance. The diffuse visible light and infrared radiation are small components of the total irradiance and almost independent of solar elevation. The angular distribution of erythemal UV radiation was tabulated and is available on request.  相似文献

The optical properties of the waters of five different stations, three located in the Messina Strait and two near the Strait (open sea), were analysed. Direct spectral measurements of the downward solar irradiance (290 - 800 nm) at different depths (0.5 m, 7 m, 10 m, 13 m, 20 m) were made using a cosine sensor connected to a spectroradiometer. Water samples were collected in the surface layer and their absorption spectra were analysed. The natural fluorescence profiles, along the water column, were determined using a fluorometer (SBE 911plus - Sea Teach). The spectral attenuation coefficient (K(lambda)), the variation of K(lambda) in different wavelength ranges (deltaK(deltalambda)), the wavelength corresponding to minimum value of K(lambda), the spectral depths of penetration of both 1% and 10% of the sub-surface irradiance values (P(lambda)), the depths of 1% of penetration of UVB, UVA and PAR, the depth ranges of the maxim concentration of Chl a and superficial CDOM were measured at each station. The maximum solar UVB penetration was about 65% of the photic zone and the maximum UVA penetration was nearly 100% (data of the Ionic sea station). Thus, a large part of the photic zone was exposed to UV radiation sufficient to cause a possible reduction in the photosynthetic activity of phytoplankton. The spectral penetration of solar radiation, especially UVB radiation, was significantly different in the three stations of the Strait with respect to the two stations studied in the open sea. This shows that variations in the spectral attenuation along the water column can be used as an indicator of properties of the water body.  相似文献

This study compared biological responses of normal human fibroblasts (NHF1) to three sources of ultraviolet radiation (UVR), emitting UVC wavelengths, UVB wavelengths, or a combination of UVA and UVB (solar simulator; emission spectrum, 94.3% UVA and 5.7% UVB). The endpoints measured were cytotoxicity, intra‐S checkpoint activation, inhibition of DNA replication and mutagenicity. Results show that the magnitude of each response to the indicated radiation sources was best predicted by the density of DNA cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPD). The density of 6‐4 pyrimidine–pyrimidone photoproducts was highest in DNA from UVC‐irradiated cells (14% of CPD) as compared to those exposed to UVB (11%) or UVA–UVB (7%). The solar simulator source, under the experimental conditions described here, did not induce the formation of 8‐oxo‐7,8‐dihydroguanine in NHF1 above background levels. Taken together, these results suggest that CPD play a dominant role in DNA damage responses and highlight the importance of using endogenous biomarkers to compare and report biological effects induced by different sources of UVR.  相似文献

The horizontal photon flux density of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and flux density of ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation were measured in the vicinity of isolated single trees during the summer of 1996. Measurements were made under shade and sunlit conditions along a transect aligned with the solar disk and the tree trunk. Flux density measurements were normalized by the flux density at a reference location away from the tree. Results showed (1) a more rapid decline in the flux density of UVA and UVB radiation than PAR with decreasing distance to the tree trunk on both the sunlit and shaded side of a tree and (2) more rapid changes in the flux density of UVB radiation UVA radiation, and PAR with distance from the tree on the sunlit side of the tree than the shaded side of the tree. The UVB/PAR ratio was found to increase in the shadow of a tree with increasing distance from the tree to between 4 and 6 for the conditions of the study. The potential for detrimental effects by UVB flux density under conditions of the high ratio may be mitigated by sunflecks at a given location over the course of a day.  相似文献

Spatial measurements of the diffusely scattered sky radiance at a seaside resort under clear sky and slightly overcast conditions have been used to calculate the sky radiance distribution across the upper hemisphere. The measurements were done in the summer season when solar UV radiation is highest. The selected wavelengths were 307, 350 and 550 nm representing the UVB, UVA and VIS band. Absolute values of radiance differ considerably between the wavelengths. Normalizing the measured values by use of direct solar radiance made the spatial distributions of unequal sky radiance comparable. The results convey a spatial impression of the different distributions of the radiance at the three wavelengths. Relative scattered radiance intensity is one order of magnitude greater in UVB than in VIS, whereas in UVA lies roughly in between. Under slightly overcast conditions scattered radiance is increased at all three wavelengths by about one order of magnitude. These measurements taken at the seaside underline the importance of diffuse scattered radiance. The effect of shading parts of the sky can be estimated from the distribution of sky radiance. This knowledge might be useful for sun seekers and in the treatment of people staying at the seaside for therapeutic purposes.  相似文献

Ultraviolet radiation can inhibit immune responses locally as well as systemically. Such effects have been measured in animals and humans exposed to ultraviolet B (wavelength 280-315 nm) (UVB) and ultraviolet A (315-400 nm) (UVA). The precise wavelength dependence is important for the identification of possible molecular targets and for assessments of risk of different artificial UV sources and solar UV. In such analyses, it is commonly assumed that radiation energy from each wavelength contributes to the effect independent of the other wavelengths. Here we show that this assumption does not hold good. In the present study, it was investigated whether exposure to broadband UVA or longwave ultraviolet A 1 (340-400 nm) (UVA 1) prior to the standard immunosuppressive UVB protocol might modulate the immunosuppressive effects induced by UVB. Preexposure to broadband UVA or longwave UVA 1, 1 day prior to the standard immunosuppressive UVB protocol, inhibited the UVB-induced suppression of delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) to Listeria monocytogenes significantly. This effect was not associated with restoring the number of interleukin (IL-12)-positive cells in the spleen. Since isomerization of trans-urocanic acid (UCA) into the immunosuppressive cis-UCA isomer plays a crucial role in UVB-induced immunomodulation, in a second set of experiments it was investigated whether immunosuppression induced by cis-UCA might also be downregulated by preexposure to UVA. Animals were exposed to broad-band UVA or longwave UVA 1 prior to application of an immunosuppressive dose of cis- or trans-UCA as a control. Both UVA and UVA 1 appear to inhibit the cis-UCA-induced systemic immunosuppression (DTH and IL-12) to L. monocytogenes. These studies clearly show that UVA radiation modulates both UVB and cis-UCA-induced immunomodulation. In general, our studies indicate that both broadband UVA and longwave UVA 1 could induce modulation of UVB and cis-UCA-induced immunomodulation. As sunlight contains both UVA and UVB radiation the balance between these two radiations apparently determines the net immunomodulatory effect.  相似文献

This study determined the sensitivity of vaccinia virus, an orthopox virus commonly used as a surrogate for variola virus (etiological agent of smallpox), exposed to UVB radiation emitted by a solar simulator, or to direct natural sunlight. The data obtained indicate that: (1) the virucidal effect of natural sunlight can be mimicked adequately by an artificial light source with similar spectral characteristics in the UVB, (2) viral sensitivity to UVB or to solar radiation can be correlated with experimental data previously obtained with UVC, (3) the correlation factor between virus inactivation by solar radiation (measured at 300 ± 5 nm) and by UVC (254 nm) is between 33 and 60, and (4) the sensitivity of viruses either dry on glass surfaces or in liquid suspension is similar when in the presence of similar amounts of cellular debris and growth media. The findings reported in this study should assist in estimating the threat posed by the persistence of virus during epidemics or after an accidental or intentional release.  相似文献

UV radiation measured on normal-to-the-sun-oriented surfaces can show significantly higher global UV irradiance values compared to measurements on horizontal receivers. The direct component is amplified by the inverse cosine of the zenith angle, but over surfaces with high local albedo this accounts for only about half of the signal rise of global irradiance. The signal rise of the diffuse component, however, is strongly related to local albedo and solar elevation, which is demonstrated by 2 years of measurements of direct, diffuse, global, reflected and global normal-to-the-sun erythemal effective UV irradiance (UVery). Global UVery signal rises, on normal-to-the-sun-oriented versus horizontal receivers, of up to 65% were measured on fresh snow and solar elevation angles below 30 degrees. An empirical expression has been deduced from the measurements relating the ratio of normal-to-the-sun versus horizontal measurements of global UVery to surface albedo and solar elevation. This allows one to calculate the maximum global UVery irradiance levels which are to be expected on normal-to-the-sun-oriented surfaces with respect to horizontal measurements or model calculations.  相似文献

Solar ultraviolet (UV) light within 280–320 nm (UVB) is the primary cause for virus inactivation in the atmosphere. Only the effect of the direct component has been previously evaluated. We developed a simple regression model to estimate the inactivation of a virus due to direct (unscattered), diffuse (scattered) and total (direct + diffuse) components of solar UV (daily integrated irradiances). The model predicts the maximum number of radiation-days a virus will survive at a given altitude above the ground in rural and urban environments under clear skies. We explored the effect of several environmental variables: visibility, altitude and ground reflectivity. We found that the effect of diffuse radiation on virus inactivation was larger than the direct component. The diffuse irradiance increased with ground albedo (mainly due to reflection of the direct attenuated solar off the ground) and decreased with increased visibility (proportional to aerosol loading in the atmosphere). The diffuse component increased with altitude, but the ratio of diffuse to the total decreased with increased altitude, highlighting the importance of the diffuse component of UV near the ground. Our model may help public health studies in predicting and understanding the effect of environmental parameters on the survival of germs.  相似文献

Sheets of polysulphone film have been extensively used as detectors to monitor solar UVB radiation. The advantages of polysulphone detectors are that they are small in size, they have good thermal stability and they are sensitive to UVB radiation. The principal disadvantage of polysulphone detectors is that their spectral sensitivity includes part of the short-wavelength UVA. In this study, we investigate the spectral sensitivity of the polysulphone detector with a series of monochromatic (+/- 2 nm) excitations. We then compare the polysulphone-effective solar radiation with the erythemally effective solar radiation by comparing solar UVB data obtained with polysulphone films with those obtained with a spectroradiometer. From polysulphone data on the seasonal variation of solar UVB radiation, we estimate the corresponding fluctuations of the absorption of the ozone layer. We show that the spectral sensitivity of the polysulphone film is closer to the erythema action spectrum than that indicated by earlier data and that polysulphone detectors can be used to predict the erythema risk of solar UVB. Measurements on solar UVB with polysulphone films and with a spectroradiometer were found to be strongly correlated (R2 > 0.95). Finally, polysulphone-based measurements provide a good measure of the fluctuations of the stratospheric ozone layer.  相似文献

SOLAR UVB-ALBEDO OF VARIOUS SURFACES   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Abstract— Measurements of the albedo of various surfaces in open grounds show significant differences for solar UVB radiation and total solar radiation (0.3–3μm). Above grassland, that albedo for solar UVB radiation is significantly smaller than that for total solar radiation (UVB: 1.3%, total: 20.7%); contrary to that, the albedo for UVB radiation is significantly higher above new dry snow (UVB: 94.4%, total: 87.0%). Consequences resulting therefrom are being quantitatively discussed with respect to the solar radiant exposure of individuals standing outdoors. Keratitis Solaris, for example, hardly occurs in snow-free terrain, even at high solar irradiance in summer; it occurs, however, in snow-covered terrain, in spite of low solar irradiance in winter and spring.  相似文献

The objective of this communication is to present the calculated ratio between UVA and UVB irradiance from sunrise to sunset and under a number of weather conditions. UVA plays an important role in the sun spectrum and a lot of attention has been paid lately regarding the protection of people from UVA. Solar spectra were collected in Kuwait City located at 29.3oNorth latitude (similar to that of Houston, TX) over a period of 8 months and under various weather conditions. Spectra were collected from 260 nm to 400 nm in 2 nm increments for solar elevation angles from 10o to 90o using a calibrated Optronics Laboratories OL‐742 Spectroradiometer. The measurements reported in this study the ratio of UVA (320–400 nm) to UVB (280–320 nm) in solar terrestrial radiation remains essentially constant and equal to 20 for the part of the day when the solar elevation is greater than 60o. Consequently the value of the ratio of solar UVA/UVB should be considered as equal to 20 for studies in photobiology and photomedicine. When the wavelength limiting the range of UVA and UVB is 315 nm (i.e. UVB: 280–315 nm and UVA: 315–400 nm) the ratio of UVA to UVB becomes equal to 41.  相似文献

High levels of ultraviolet‐B (UVB) radiation can negatively affect aquatic animals. Macrobrachium olfersi is a prawn that lives in clear freshwaters and during the breeding season, females carry eggs in an external brood pouch. Therefore, we hypothesize that eggs are also exposed to environmental UVB radiation. The aim of this study was to investigate whether UVB radiation induces DNA damage and compromises cell cycle in embryos of M. olfersi. In laboratory, UVB irradiance (310 mW. cm?2) that embryos receive in the natural environment was simulated. After irradiation, embryos were kept under different light conditions in order to recognize the presence of cell repair. UVB radiation induces DNA damage, specifically thymine dimers. After 48 h of UVB exposure, a significant decrease in the level of these dimers was observed in embryos kept under visible light while it remained constant in the dark. Moreover, under visible light and darkness, a decrease in proliferation was observed after 48 h of irradiation. An increase in PCNA expression and decrease in p53 expression were observed after, respectively, 1 and 48 h of exposure. Our results showed that UVB radiation disturbs the cell cycle and induces DNA damage in M. olfersi embryos. However, under visible light these embryos showed successful DNA repair.  相似文献

The effect of cloud cover on the amount of solar UV radiation that reaches pedestrians under tree cover was evaluated with a three-dimensional canopy radiation transport model. The spatial distribution of UVB irradiance at the base of a regular array of spherical tree crowns was modeled under the full range of sky conditions. The spatial mean relative irradiance (I), and erythemal irradiance of the entire below-canopy domain and the spatial mean relative irradiance and erythemal irradiance in the shaded regions of the domain were determined for solar zenith angles from 15° to 60°. The erythemal UV irradiance under skies with 50% or less cloud cover was not remarkably different from that under clear skies. In the shade, the actual irradiance was greater under partly cloudy than under clear skies. The mean ultraviolet protection factor for tree canopies under skies with 50% or less cloud cover was nearly equivalent to that for clear sky days. Regression equations of spatially averaged Ir . as a function of cloud cover fraction, solar zenith angle and canopy cover were used to predict the variation in erythemal irradiance in different land uses across Baltimore, MD.  相似文献

In order to study the heat effect of mixing of fresh waters (winter rains in the form of floods) with Dead Sea water, the heats of mixing of Dead Sea water with distilled water at 25°C have been measured. On the basis of these experimental data, the heats of dilution of fresh water in Dead Sea water and Dead Sea water in fresh water have been calculated. By considering the isothermal cycle of the dilution of Dead Sea water, the partial heat of evaporation of water from Dead Sea water was found to be ca. 24585 kJ-(kgH2O)–1 at 25°C.  相似文献

UV Index information is currently recommended as a vehicle to raise public awareness about the risk of sun-exposure. It remains unknown to what extent this information can change personal sun-protective behavior. The aim of the study was to analyze the effects of UV-Index (UV-I) information provided by low cost, commercially available UV-I sensors on major indicators of sun-tanning behavior. A randomized-controlled trial was carried out on 94 healthy volunteers aged 21-23 years. After the exclusion of subjects with photosensitive disorders (n=3), 91 subjects were randomized in two arms after stratification based on phototype and sex. Both arms received a diary to be filled every day with a log of intentional sun-exposure during summer. Subjects in the intervention group also received a commercially available UV-I sensor. The UV-I sensors were switched on and the UV-value was recorded in 77% of days with sun-exposure. During days of sun-exposure, subjects randomized to the intervention group had longer average time of sun-exposure (227.7 vs 208.7 min per day, P=0.003), also between noon and 4 pm (P<0.001), and less frequently adopted sun protective measures than controls (hat [6.4%vs 10.2%, P=0.007], sunglasses [23.9%vs 30.8%, P=0.003], sunscreen [41.4%vs 47.2%, P=0.02]) and they experienced more frequent sunburns (27.8%vs 21.5%, P=0.004). The odd ratio of sunburns was 1.60 for subjects in the intervention group compared with controls (after adjustment for sex, sunscreen use and skin type). The mean UV-I value recorded by volunteers was lower (5.6 [SD+/-0.9]) than that (7.3 [SD+/-0.46]) recorded by a professional instrument in the same period at the same latitude. Poststudy laboratory tests showed that the sensor was able to detect only about 60% of the solar diffuse radiation. The use of UV-I sensors changed the sun protective behavior of sunbathers in the direction of less use of sun protective measures. One possible explanation is that the low cost UV-meters may have functioned incorrectly and under-reported UV exposure. This may have led to an underestimation of UV-I values, erroneously reassuring subjects and causing a less protective sunbathing behavior. Another hypothesis relies on a cognitive pitfall in the subjects' dealing with intermediate UV-I values, as they may have been discouraged in the use of sunscreen as they did not feel that they had yet been exposed to very harmful UV radiation.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to develop a qunatitiative risk assessment of lowered resistance to Infections in humans due to (solar) ultraviolet B (UVB) exposure. We followed the steps for risk assessment as defined by the U. S. National Academy of Sciences: (1) hazard identification, (2) dose-response assessment, (3) exposure assessment, and (4) risk characterization. For step 1, the suppressory effects of UVB radiation on the immune system have been reviewed, suplemented with new data, and analyzed. Experiments on UV-induced immunosuppression cannot be performed with humans for ethical reasons, but herpes simplex virus infection appears to be the human paradigm. Thus, UVB radiation appears to be a potential hazard to immunologic functions, Step 2 is crucial, but dose-response relationships for infections have never been measured in humans. We used our earlier doseresponse rat data for suppression of lymphocyte stimulation and computed that the UVB dose resulting in a 50% reduction of lymphocyte stimulation by Listeria monocytogenes is 6.800 J/m2. Using mixed skin lymphocyte response assays we found that humans are 3.8 times less sensitive than rats (interspeices variation (IEVI). To account for the 2.5 percentile of most susceptible individuals in a population, and additional factor (intraspecies varations (IAV) was introduced (0.5 for humans). Using these data, we computed that 13.100 J/m2 of UVB radiation emitted by FS40 lamps would suppress 50% of the proliferative response of lymphocytes to L. monocytogenes in most sensitive skin type 2 humans. In step 3, we assumed the action spectrum for the responses analyzed by us as indentical to an action spectrum for suppression of contact hypersensitivity that is available in the literature. This led us to step 4, where we calculated that approximately 100 min of solar exposure at around noon in Italy or Spain would suppress the resistance to infections by L. monocytogenes in the most sensitive humans.  相似文献

Abstract— Photoinhibition of photosynthesis was investigated in the Mediterranean green alga Halimeda tuna measuring pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) chlorophyll fluorescence and oxygen evolution in situ under solar radiation. Exposure to solar radiation at the surface caused a drastic decline in the photosynthetic quantum yield accompanied by a decline in the photochemical quenching, while the nonphotochemical quenching dramatically increased. The algae recovered from these effects within a few hours indicating that these are mainly due to reversible photoinhibition and only to a smaller extent to nonreversible photodamage. Individuals harvested from deeper waters were more affected than those from shallower waters. Photoinhibition occurs in this alga even in its natural habitat when the sun is at high angles as shown by measuring the fluorescence parameters at hourly intervals during the course of the day. Photoinhibition was less pronounced when the short wavelength band was increasingly removed from solar radiation using cut-off filters. After exposure of thalli to solar radiation at the water surface, oxygen production decreased drastically within 30 min; this inhibition was even more pronounced in algae harvested from deeper waters. Oxygen measurements at different depths showed optimal photosynthesis at a depth of 1 m. Also for photosynthetic oxygen production inhibited by high solar irradiance at least partial recovery could be observed within several hours. Despite the fact that UVB accounts for a very small fraction of solar radiation, it has a considerable effect on photosynthesis, whereas UVA seems to contribute only little to photoinhibition in H. tuna.  相似文献
