When the follower's optimality conditions are both necessary and sufficient, the nonlinear bilevel program can be solved as a global optimization problem. The complementary slackness condition is usually the complicating constraint in such problems. We show how this constraint can be replaced by an equivalent system of convex and separable quadratic constraints. In this paper, we propose different methods for finding the global minimum of a concave function subject to quadratic separable constraints. The first method is of the branch and bound type, and is based on rectangular partitions to obtain upper and lower bounds. Convergence of the proposed algorithm is also proved. For computational purposes, different procedures that accelerate the convergence of the proposed algorithm are analysed. The second method is based on piecewise linear approximations of the constraint functions. When the constraints are convex, the problem is reduced to global concave minimization subject to linear constraints. In the case of non-convex constraints, we use zero-one integer variables to linearize the constraints. The number of integer variables depends only on the concave parts of the constraint functions.Parts of the present paper were prepared while the second author was visiting Georgia Tech and the University of Florida.  相似文献

The zero-one integer programming problem and its special case, the multiconstraint knapsack problem frequently appear as subproblems in many combinatorial optimization problems. We present several methods for computing lower bounds on the optimal solution of the zero-one integer programming problem. They include Lagrangean, surrogate and composite relaxations. New heuristic procedures are suggested for determining good surrogate multipliers. Based on theoretical results and extensive computational testing, it is shown that for zero-one integer problems with few constraints surrogate relaxation is a viable alternative to the commonly used Lagrangean and linear programming relaxations. These results are used in a follow up paper to develop an efficient branch and bound algorithm for solving zero-one integer programming problems.  相似文献

A bounded knapsack sharing problem is a maximin or minimax mathematical programming problem with one or more linear inequality constraints, an objective function composed of single variable continuous functions called tradeoff functions, and lower and upper bounds on the variables. A single constraint problem which can have negative or positive constraint coefficients and any type of continuous tradeoff functions (including multi-modal, multiple-valued and staircase functions) is considered first. Limiting conditions where the optimal value of a variable may be plus or minus infinity are explicitly considered. A preprocessor procedure to transform any single constraint problem to a finite form problem (an optimal feasible solution exists with finite variable values) is developed. Optimality conditions and three algorithms are then developed for the finite form problem. For piecewise linear tradeoff functions, the preprocessor and algorithms are polynomially bounded. The preprocessor is then modified to handle bounded knapsack sharing problems with multiple constraints. An optimality condition and algorithm is developed for the multiple constraint finite form problem. For multiple constraints, the time needed for the multiple constraint finite form algorithm is the time needed to solve a single constraint finite form problem multiplied by the number of constraints. Some multiple constraint problems cannot be transformed to multiple constraint finite form problems.  相似文献

This paper presents the use of surrogate constraints and Lagrange multipliers to generate advanced starting solutions to constrained network problems. The surrogate constraint approach is used to generate a singly constrained network problem which is solved using the algorithm of Glover, Karney, Klingman and Russell [13]. In addition, we test the use of the Lagrangian function to generate advanced starting solutions. In the Lagrangian approach, the subproblems are capacitated network problems which can be solved using very efficient algorithms.The surrogate constraint approach is implemented using the multiplier update procedure of Held, Wolfe and Crowder [16]. The procedure is modified to include a search in a single direction to prevent periodic regression of the solution. We also introduce a reoptimization procedure which allows the solution from thekth subproblem to be used as the starting point for the next surrogate problem for which it is infeasible once the new surrogate constraint is adjoined.The algorithms are tested under a variety of conditions including: large-scale problems, number and structure of the non-network constraints, and the density of the non-network constraint coefficients.The testing clearly demonstrates that both the surrogate constraint and Langrange multipliers generate advanced starting solutions which greatly improve the computational effort required to generate an optimal solution to the constrained network problem. The testing demonstrates that the extra effort required to solve the singly constrained network subproblems of the surrogate constraints approach yields an improved advanced starting point as compared to the Lagrangian approach. It is further demonstrated that both of the relaxation approaches are much more computationally efficient than solving the problem from the beginning with a linear programming algorithm.  相似文献

An approach to the numerical solution of optimization problems with equality constraints violating the traditional constraint qualification is developed. According to this approach, an (overdetermined) defining system is constructed based on the Fritz John optimality conditions and the Gauss-Newton method is applied to this system. The assumptions required for the implementability and local superlinear convergence of the resulting algorithm are completely characterized in terms of the original problem.  相似文献

This paper presents a simulated annealing algorithm for resource constrained project scheduling problems with the objective of minimising makespan. In the search algorithm, a solution is represented with a priority list, a vector of numbers each of which denotes the priority of each activity. In the algorithm, a priority scheduling method is used for making a complete schedule from a given priority list (and hence a project schedule is defined by a priority list). The search algorithm is applied to find a priority list which corresponds to a good project schedule. Unlike most of priority scheduling methods, in the suggested algorithm some activities are delayed on purpose so as to extend search space. Solutions can be further improved by delaying certain activities, since non-delay schedules are not dominant in the problem (the set of non-delay schedules does not always include an optimal solution). The suggested algorithm is flexible in that it can be easily applied to problems with an objective function of a general form and/or complex constraints. The performance of the simulated annealing algorithm is compared with existing heuristics on problems prepared by Patterson and randomly generated test problems. Computational results showed that the suggested algorithm outperformed existing ones.  相似文献

Large practical linear and integer programming problems are not always presented in a form which is the most compact representation of the problem. Such problems are likely to posses generalized upper bound(GUB) and related structures which may be exploited by algorithms designed to solve them efficiently. The steps of an algorithm which by repeated application reduces the rows, columns, and bounds in a problem matrix and leads to the freeing of some variables are first presented. The ‘unbounded solution’ and ‘no feasible solution’ conditions may also be detected by this. Computational results of applying this algorithm are presented and discussed. An algorithm to detect structure is then described. This algorithm identifies sets of variables and the corresponding constraint relationships so that the total number of GUB-type constraints is maximized. Comparisons of computational results of applying different heuristics in this algorithm are presented and discussed.  相似文献

Multilevel programming is characterized as mathematical programming to solve decentralized planning problems. The models partition control over decision variables among ordered levels within a hierarchical planning structure of which the linear bilevel form is a special case of a multilevel programming problem. In a system with such a hierarchical structure, the high-level decision making situations generally require inclusion of zero-one variables representing ‘yes-no’ decisions. We provide a mixed-integer linear bilevel programming formulation in which zero-one decision variables are controlled by a high-level decision maker and real-value decision variables are controlled by a low-level decision maker. An algorithm based on the short term memory component of Tabu Search, called Simple Tabu Search, is developed to solve the problem, and two supplementary procedures are proposed that provide variations of the algorithm. Computational results disclose that our approach is effective in terms of both solution quality and efficiency.  相似文献

The so called dual parametrization method for quadratic semi-infinite programming (SIP) problems is developed recently for quadratic SIP problems with a single infinite constraint. A dual parametrization algorithm is also proposed for numerical solution of such problems. In this paper, we consider quadratic SIP problems with positive definite objective and multiple linear infinite constraints. All the infinite constraints are supposed to be continuously dependent on their index variable on a compact set which is defined by a number equality and inequalities. We prove that in the multiple infinite constraint case, the minimu parametrization number, just as in the single infinite constraint case, is less or equal to the dimension of the SIP problem. Furthermore, we propose an adaptive dual parametrization algorithm with convergence result. Compared with the previous dual parametrization algorithm, the adaptive algorithm solves subproblems with much smaller number of constraints. The efficiency of the new algorithm is shown by solving a number of numerical examples.  相似文献

Optimization problems with constraints involving stochastic parameters that are required to be satisfied with a prespecified probability threshold arise in numerous applications. Such chance constrained optimization problems involve the dual challenges of stochasticity and nonconvexity. In the setting of a finite distribution of the stochastic parameters, an optimization problem with linear chance constraints can be formulated as a mixed integer linear program (MILP). The natural MILP formulation has a weak relaxation bound and is quite difficult to solve. In this paper, we review some recent results on improving the relaxation bounds and constructing approximate solutions for MILP formulations of chance constraints. We also discuss a recently introduced bicriteria approximation algorithm for covering type chance constrained problems. This algorithm uses a relaxation to construct a solution whose (constraint violation) risk level may be larger than the pre-specified threshold, but is within a constant factor of it, and whose objective value is also within a constant factor of the true optimal value. Finally, we present some new results that improve on the bicriteria approximation factors in the finite scenario setting and shed light on the effect of strong relaxations on the approximation ratios.  相似文献

Many engineering optimization problems frequently encounter discrete variables as well as continuous variables and the presence of nonlinear discrete variables considerably adds to the solution complexity. Very few of the existing methods can find a globally optimal solution when the objective functions are non-convex and non-differentiable. In this paper, we present a mixed-variable evolutionary programming (MVEP) technique for solving these nonlinear optimization problems which contain integer, discrete, zero-one and continuous variables. The MVEP provides an improvement in global search reliability in a mixed-variable space and converges steadily to a good solution. An approach to handle various kinds of variables and constraints is discussed. Some examples of mixed-variable optimization problems in the literature are tested, which demonstrate that the proposed approach is superior to current methods for finding the best solution, in terms of both solution quality and algorithm robustness.  相似文献

We define a class of monotone integer programs with constraints that involve up to three variables each. A generic constraint in such integer program is of the form axbyz+c, where a and b are nonnegative and the variable z appears only in that constraint. We devise an algorithm solving such problems in time polynomial in the length of the input and the range of variables U. The solution is obtained from a minimum cut on a graph with O(nU) nodes and O(mU) arcs where n is the number of variables of the types x and y and m is the number of constraints. Our algorithm is also valid for nonlinear objective functions.Nonmonotone integer programs are optimization problems with constraints of the type ax+byz+c without restriction on the signs of a and b. Such problems are in general NP-hard. We devise here an algorithm, relying on a transformation to the monotone case, that delivers half integral superoptimal solutions in polynomial time. Such solutions provide bounds on the optimum value that can only be superior to bounds provided by linear programming relaxation. When the half integral solution can be rounded to an integer feasible solution, this is a 2-approximate solution. In that the technique is a unified 2-approximation technique for a large class of problems. The results apply also for general integer programming problems with worse approximation factors that depend on a quantifier measuring how far the problem is from the class of problems we describe.The algorithm described here has a wide array of problem applications. An additional important consequence of our results is that nonmonotone problems in the framework are MAX SNP-hard and at least as hard to approximate as vertex cover.Problems that are amenable to the analysis provided here are easily recognized. The analysis itself is entirely technical and involves manipulating the constraints and transforming them to a totally unimodular system while losing no more than a factor of 2 in the integrality.  相似文献

Many real-life problems are over-constrained, so that no solution satisfying all their constraints exists. Soft constraints, with costs denoting how much the constraints are violated, are used to solve these problems. We use the edit-distance based SoftRegular constraint as an example to show that a propagation algorithm that sometimes underestimates the cost may guide the search to incorrect (non-optimal) solutions to an over-constrained problem. To compute correctly the cost for the edit-distance based SoftRegular constraint, we present a quadratic-time propagation algorithm based on dynamic programming and a proof of its correctness. We also give an improved propagation algorithm using an idea of computing the edit distance between two strings, which may also be applied to other constraints with propagators based on dynamic programming. The asymptotic time complexity of our improved propagator is always at least as good as the one of our quadratic-time propagator, but significantly better when the edit distance is small. Our propagators achieve domain consistency on the problem variables and bounds consistency on the cost variable. Our method can also be adapted for the violation measure of the edit-distance based Regular constraint for constraint-based local search.  相似文献

Structural redundancies in mathematical programming models are nothing uncommon and nonlinear programming problems are no exception. Over the past few decades numerous papers have been written on redundancy. Redundancy in constraints and variables are usually studied in a class of mathematical programming problems. However, main emphasis has so far been given only to linear programming problems. In this paper, an algorithm that identifies redundant objective function(s) and redundant constraint(s) simultaneously in multi-objective nonlinear stochastic fractional programming problems is provided. A solution procedure is also illustrated with numerical examples. The proposed algorithm reduces the number of nonlinear fractional objective functions and constraints in cases where redundancy exists.  相似文献

A media model that selects and schedules advertisements over time subject to a budgetary constraint is formulated as a large-scale, zero-one, integer programming model. A solution to the model by means of standard optimization techniques is infeasible or impractical, because of its complex structure. Consequently, several computationally efficient alternative solution approaches are developed and evaluated. These are shown to provide good (often optimal) solutions to the model and also appear to have a wide range of applicability to other media models and optimization problems with similar structures.  相似文献

A minimization problem with convex separable objective function subject to a convex separable inequality constraint of the form “less than or equal to” and bounds on the variables (box constraints) is considered. Necessary and sufficient condition is proved for a feasible solution to be an optimal solution to this problem. A branch and bound algorithm is presented for the problem of schedulingn jobs on a single machine to minimize tardiness. The algorithm uses a dual problem to obtain a good feasible solution and an extremely sharp lower bound on the optimal objective value. To derive the dual problem we regard the single machine as imposing a constraint for each time period. A dual variable is associated with each of these constraints and used to form a Lagrangian problem in which the dualized constraints appear in the objective function. A lower bound is obtained by solving the Lagrangian problem with fixed multiplier values. The major theoretical result of the paper is an algorithm which solves the Lagrangian problem in a number of steps proportional to the product ofn 2 and the average job processing time. The search for multiplier values which maximize the lower bound leads to the formulation and optimization of the dual problem. The bounds obtained are so sharp that very little enumeration or computer time is required to solve even large problems. Computational experience with 20-, 30-, and 50-job problems is presented.  相似文献

This paper addresses integer programming problems under probabilistic constraints involving discrete distributions. Such problems can be reformulated as large scale integer problems with knapsack constraints. For their solution we propose a specialized Branch and Bound approach where the feasible solutions of the knapsack constraint are used as partitioning rules of the feasible domain. The numerical experience carried out on a set covering problem with random covering matrix shows the validity of the solution approach and the efficiency of the implemented algorithm.  相似文献

Consider the problem of finding an integer matrix that satisfies given constraints on its leading partial row and column sums. For the case in which the specified constraints are merely bounds on each such sum, an integer linear programming formulation is shown to have a totally unimodular constraint matrix. This proves the polynomial-time solvability of this case. In another version of the problem, one seeks a zero-one matrix with prescribed row and column sums, subject to certain near-equality constraints, namely, that all leading partial row (respectively, column) sums up through a given column (respectively, row) are within unity of each other. This case admits a polynomial reduction to the preceding case, and an equivalent reformulation as a maximum-flow problem. The results are developed in a context that relates these two problems to consistent matrix rounding.  相似文献

The QUAD01 program described here implements an implicit-enumeration algorithm for quadratic zero-one programming devised by Pierre Hansen just over twenty years ago. The present author's implementation is written in the C programming language and uses an efficient linked-list structure to store and manipulate constraint and objective data. This use, together with the increased speed of modern microcomputers and improved optimisation of generated code, has led to a marked reduction in running times compared with the original implementation (in FORTRAN) by Hansen. Further reductions of running times have been obtained by incorporating dynamic ordering of constraints into QUAD01. Problems having up to 50–100 variables and 100–200 constraints have been solved; some results are reported here.  相似文献
