The optimal general lower bound in order to guarantee the existence of such diagonals is determined, as well as their minimal number for given number of positive elements. If the permanent is restricted to matrices having a given zero pattern confined to one row or to one column, the permanent achieves a local minimum at those matrices with that zero pattern which are closest to Jnn. We determine the number of alternating parity sequences that are subsequences of an increasing m-tuple of integers. For this and other related counting problems we find formulas that are combinations of Fibonacci numbers. In this paper, we investigate the ordering on a semiring of monotone doubly stochastic transition matrices in Shorrocks’ sense. In Markov chain models in finance and healthcare a transition matrix over a certain time interval is needed but only a transition matrix over a longer time interval may be available. The problem arises of determining a stochastic pth root of a stochastic matrix (the given transition matrix). By exploiting the theory of functions of matrices, we develop results on the existence and characterization of matrix pth roots, and in particular on the existence of stochastic pth roots of stochastic matrices. Our contributions include characterization of when a real matrix has a real pth root, a classification of pth roots of a possibly singular matrix, a sufficient condition for a pth root of a stochastic matrix to have unit row sums, and the identification of two classes of stochastic matrices that have stochastic pth roots for all p. We also delineate a wide variety of possible configurations as regards existence, nature (primary or nonprimary), and number of stochastic roots, and develop a necessary condition for existence of a stochastic root in terms of the spectrum of the given matrix.  相似文献

In this paper, we analyze the relation between some classes of matrices with variants of the diagonal dominance property. We establish a sufficient condition for a generalized doubly diagonally dominant matrix to be invertible. Sufficient conditions for a matrix to be strictly generalized diagonally dominant are also presented. We provide a sufficient condition for the invertibility of a cyclically diagonally dominant matrix. These sufficient conditions do not assume the irreducibility of the matrix.  相似文献

We show that infinite locally finite doubly stochastic matrices are particular limits of sequences of finite doubly stochastic matrices and reciprocally. Thereby, we define the parity in the set of infinite locally finite doubly stochastic matrices. In particular, convexity and stability properties of the even matrix of this set are investigated, as well as the differences between the finite case and the infinite case. The set of n×n orthostochastic matrices with the topology induced by the Euclidean matric is shown to be compact and path-connected. For n<3, the set of orthostochastic matrices is identical to the set of doubly stochastic matrices. In this paper, it is shown that for n3 the orthostochastic matrices are not everywhere dense in the set of doubly stochastic matrices, thus answering a question of L. Doubly nonnegative matrices arise naturally in many setting including Markov random fields (positively banded graphical models) and in the convergence analysis of Markov chains. In this short note, we settle a recent conjecture by C.R. Johnson et al. [Charles R. Johnson, Brian Lins, Olivia Walch, The critical exponent for continuous conventional powers of doubly nonnegative matrices, Linear Algebra Appl. 435 (9) (2011) 2175–2182] by proving that the critical exponent beyond which all continuous conventional powers of n-by-n   doubly nonnegative matrices are doubly nonnegative is exactly n−2n2. We show that the conjecture follows immediately by applying a general characterization from the literature. We prove a stronger form of the conjecture by classifying all powers preserving doubly nonnegative matrices, and proceed to generalize the conjecture for broad classes of functions. We also provide different approaches for settling the original conjecture.  相似文献
