A variety of rigorous inequalities for critical exponents is proved. Most notable is the low-temperature Josephson inequalitydv +2 2–. Others are 1 1 +v, 1 1 , 1,d 1 + 1/ (for d),dv, 3 + (for d), 4 , and 2m 2m+2 (form 2). The hypotheses vary; all inequalities are true for the spin-1/2 Ising model with nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic pair interactions.NSF Predoctoral Fellow (1976–1979). An unorthodox cosmology is based on a notion of standpoint, distinguishing past from future, realized through Hilbert-space representation of the complex conformai group for 3+1spacetime and associated coherent states. Physical (approximate) symmetry attaches to eight-parameter complex Poincaré displacements, interpretable as growth of standpoint age (one parameter), boost of matter energy-momentum in standpoint rest frame (three parameters) and displacement of matter location in a compact U(1)O(4)/O(3) spacetime attached to standpoint (four parameters). An initial condition (at big bang) is characterized by a huge dimensionless parameter that breaks dilation invariance. Four major length scales are recognized, called Planck, particle, lab, and Hubble, with separations controlled by ; all physical concepts, including spacetime, depend on wideness of scale separation.  相似文献

No Heading The uncertainty in the measured fluorescence decay lifetimes of 30 nm particles of YAG:Cc was used to evaluate the predictions of a novel form of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle suggested by de Sabbata and Sivaram, T t h/k. The worst-case uncertainty in temperature of 4.5 °K (as derived from the relationship between temperature and lifetime) and the measured uncertainty in decay lifetime, 0.45 ns, yielded an internal estimate of T t = 2.0 × 10–9 °K s, which is 263 times larger than /k = 7.6 × 10–12 °K s. An external estimate of T t = 4.5 × 1011 °K s (which is = 6 times /k) is derived from the independently measured uncertainty in the temperature of the sample and the experimentally determined uncertainty in lifetime. These results could be low by a factor of 5.6 if signal averaging must be taken into account. If valid, the findings are consistent with the predictions of this version of the uncertainty principle and they imply the existence of a type of thermal quantum limit.  相似文献

We study the time evolution of a three dimensional quantum particle under the action of a time-dependent point interaction fixed at the origin. We assume that the strength of the interaction (t) is a periodic function with an arbitrary mean. Under very weak conditions on the Fourier coefficients of (t), we prove that there is complete ionization as t, starting from a bound state at time t=0. We investigate the Finkelstein-Misner geons for a non-simply-connected space-time manifold (M, g 0). We use relations between different Lorentzian structures unequivalent tog 0 and topological properties ofM given by the Morse theory. It implies that to some pieces of geons we have to associate Wheeler's worm-holes. Geons that correspond to time-orientable Lorentz structures are related tog 0 by Morse functions that describe the attaching of a handle of index one. In the case of geons associated to time-nonorientable Lorentzian structures, appropriate handles are related to loops along which the notion of time reverses. If we assume electromagnetic properties of geons, then only four species, v, e, p, m, of different geons can exist and geon m has to decay according to mv+p+e.  相似文献

It has been proposed that some posets of quantum logic could be embedded into lattices in order to recover the lattice structure avoiding the introduction of ad hoc axioms. We consider here the embedding s of any posetS into the complete lattice s of its closed ideals (normal embedding ofS) and show that s can be characterized (up to a lattice isomorphism) either by means of a density property or by means of a minimality property. Both of these suggest that the normal embedding satisfies some intuitive conditions which make it preferable with respect to other possible embeddings ofS. We consider the poset of all the effects associated to yes-no experiments and briefly comment on the application of the normal embedding in this case. Quite often the compatibility of the EPR correlations with the relativity theory has been questioned; it has been stated that the first in time of two correlated measurements instantaneously collapses the other subsystem; it has been suggested that a causal asymmetry is built into the Feynman propagator. However, the EPR transition amplitude, as derived from the S matrix, is Lorentz andCPT invariant; the correlation formula is symmetric in the two measurements irrespective of their time ordering, so that the link of the correlations is the Feynman zigzag, and that causality isCPT invariant at the microlevel; finally, although the Feynman propagator has theP andCT symmetries, no causal asymmetry follows from that. As for Stapp's views concerning process and becoming, and his Whiteheadean concept of an advancing front, I object that they belong to factlike macrophysics, and are refuted at the microlevel by the EPR phenomenology, which displays direct Fokker-like space-time connections. The reason for this is a radical one. The very blending of a space-time picture and of a probability calculus is a paradox. The only adequate paradigm is one denying objectivity to space-time—but this, of course, is also required by the complementary of the x and the k pictures, which only look compatible at the macrolevel. Therefore, the classical objectivity must yield in favor of intersubjectivity. Only the macroscopic preparing and measuring devices have factlike objectivity; the transition of the quantal system takes place beyond both thex and thek 4-spaces. Then, the intrinsic symmetries between retarded and advanced waves, and statistical prediction and retrodiction, entails that the future has no less (but no more) existence than the past. It is the future that is significant in creative process, the elementary forms of which should be termed precognition or psychokinesis—respectively symmetric to the factlike taboos that we can neither know into the future nor act into the past. It is gratifying that Robert Jahn, at the Engineering School of Princeton University, is conducting (after others) conclusive experiments demonstrating low level psychokinesis—a phenomenon implied by the very symmetry of the negentropy-information transition. So, what pierces the veil of maya is the (rare) occurrence of paranormal phenomena. The essential severance between act and potentia is not a spacelike advancing front, but the out of and the into factlike space-time. Finally, I do not feel that an adequate understanding of the EPR phenomenology requires going beyond the present status of relativistic quantum mechanics. Rather, I believe that the potentialities of this formalism have not yet been fully exploited.  相似文献

For the Ising model with nearest neighbour interaction it is shown that the spin correlations A B - A B decrease exponentially asd(A, B) in a pure phase when the temperature is well belowT c. This is used to prove that the free energyF(,h) is infinitely differentiable in and has one sided derivatives inh of all orders forh=0. The bounds are also used to prove that the central limit theorem holds for several variables such as e.g. the total energy and the total magnetization of the system, the limit distribution being gaussian with variances determined by the second derivatives ofF(,h).  相似文献

Bohr's 1930 derivation of the uncertainty relation c 2 m th bears a close relationship to Einstein's 1913 derivation of the gravitational redshift via the equivalence principle. A rewording of Bohr's argument is presented here, not taking the last step of acceleration as equivalent to a uniform gravity field, thus yielding a derivation of the formula c 2 m th, avoiding Treder's 1971 objection.  相似文献

The phase transition for a spin in a magnetic fieldB coupled to acoustic phonons by a coupling constant is studied. The caseB1 with an upper cutoff of unity for the phonons is studied systematically by using an adiabatic canonical transformation. In leading order the transition line is at =2/B=1. In the normal phase (<1) the ground-state energy is –B/2 plus a function of that is given explicitly as the solution of a pair theory. In the broken symmetry phase (>1) the energy is the classical energy plus the same function of =1/2. It is found that the first derivatives of the energy with respect to and with respect toB have finite jumps across the transition line. Quantum fluctuations in both phases are treated. Higher-order terms are a series of powers of 1/B times functions of . The case of a small transverse fieldB is also studied. The sharp transition disappears and is replaced by rapid variation in a region of order (B1/B)2/3 about =1.  相似文献

The symmetric spin-boson model without external field is treated for any type of coupling to the boson bath and any initial bath density matrix. With initially fully aligned spin (z (0)= =1), the proof is given that a partial relaxation (z (+) t1<) implies that there is no asymptotic-time (up-and-down) symmetry breaking (i.e. that z (+)=0). For the problem of a particle (interacting with free bosons) in a symmetric double well without spatial symmetry breaking before the infinite time limit, this means that att + the particle distribution becomes symmetric (irrespective of the full initial asymmetry) unless the particle fully remains (att + ) in Ihe starting well.  相似文献

We investigate the existence, properties and approach to stationary non-equilibrium states of infinite harmonic crystals. For classical systems these stationary states are, like the Gibbs states, Gaussian measures on the phase space of the infinite system (analogues results are true for quantum systems). Their ergodic properties are the same as those of the equilibrium states: e.g. for ordered periodic crystals they are Bernoulli. Unlike the equilibrium states however they are not stable towards perturbations in the potential.We are particularly concerned here with states in which there is a non-vanishing steady heat flux passing through every point of the infinite system. Such superheat-conducting states are of course only possible in systems in which Fourier's law does not hold: the perfect harmonic crystal being an example of such a system. For a one dimensional system, we find such states (explicitely) as limits, whent, of time evolved initial states i in which the left and right parts of the infinite crystal are in equilibrium at different temperatures, L L R –1 , and the middle part is in an arbitrary state. We also investigate the limit of these stationary (t) states as the coupling strength between the system and the reservoirs goes to zero. In this limit we obtain a product state, where the reservoirs are in equilibrium at temperatures L –1 and R –1 and the system is in the unique stationary state of the reduced dynamics in the weak coupling limit.On leave of absence from the Fachbereich Physik der Universität München. In general relativity, conservation of energy and momentum is expressed by an equation of the form /x= 0, where –gT represents the total energy, momentum, and stress. This equation arises from the divergence formula dV v = (/x v )d 4 d. Here we show that this formula fails to account properly for the system of basis vectors e(x). We obtain the (invariant) divergence formula e dV v = e (/x v + )d 4 d. Conservation of energy and momentum is therefore expressed by the covariant equation (/x v ) + = 0. We go on to calculate the variation of the action under uniform displacements in space-time. This calculation yields the covariant equation of conservation, as well as the fully symmetric energy tensor . Finally, we discuss the transfer of energy and momentum, within the context of Einstein's theory of gravitation.  相似文献

Using the random phase approximation and analytical calculation we show that a higher surface plasma mode can exist near a plane metal-vacuum interface provided the oscillation is sufficiently localized. This conclusion is confirmed for the infinite potential barrier model of the surface where a mode with long-wavelength frequency p in sodium is predicted.  相似文献

The paper considers the wave equation, with constant or variable coefficients in n , with odd n3. We study the asymptotics of the distribution t of the random solution at time t as t . It is assumed that the initial measure 0 has zero mean, translation-invariant covariance matrices, and finite expected energy density. We also assume that 0 satisfies a Rosenblatt- or Ibragimov–Linnik-type space mixing condition. The main result is the convergence of t to a Gaussian measure as t , which gives a Central Limit Theorem (CLT) for the wave equation. The proof for the case of constant coefficients is based on an analysis of long-time asymptotics of the solution in the Fourier representation and Bernstein's room-corridor argument. The case of variable coefficients is treated by using a version of the scattering theory for infinite energy solutions, based on Vainberg's results on local energy decay.  相似文献

A practical method is described for determining the symmetry groups of the differential equations of physics via a discussion of all possible operators in space of coordinates {x} and derivatives {/x}. Two classes ofn-dimensional lattice sums are shown to exhibit a weak form of a phase transition in their asymptotic properties. Both classes depend on two parameters such that the leading term in an asymptotic limit of one parameter is independent of the structure of the lattice in one domain of the second parameter and dependent on the structure in an adjacent domain, with a boundary point, or transition temperature, between the two domains.  相似文献

We consider a variant of the problem of directed polymers on a disordered lattice, in which the disorder is geometrical in nature. In particular, we allow a finite probability for each bond to be absent from the lattice. We show, through the use of numerical and scaling arguments on both Euclidean and hierarchical lattices, that the model has two distinct scaling behaviors, depending upon whether the concentration of bonds on the lattice is at or above the directed percolation threshold. We are particularly interested in the exponents and, defined by ft and xt , describing the free-energy and transverse fluctuations, respectively. Above the percolation threshold, the scaling behavior is governed by the standard random energy exponents (=1/3 and =2/3 in 1+1 dimensions). At the percolation threshold, we predict (and verify numerically in 1+1 dimensions) the exponents=1/2 and =v/v, where v and v are the directed percolation exponents. In addition, we predict the absence of a free phase in any dimension at the percolation threshold.  相似文献
