Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene (DMB) in solution and on the surface of silica nanoparticles was investigated and PDMB-grafted silica nanoparticles (PDMB-g-SiO2 NPs) with different chain densities and molecular weights were prepared. The kinetic studies of DMB polymerization mediated by silica anchored RAFT agents at different graft densities were investigated and compared to the polymerization mediated by the corresponding free RAFT agent. The PDMB-g-SiO2 NPs were cured to prepare rubbery films and obtain matrix-free nanocomposites, which exhibited a good dispersion of silica nanoparticles and improved mechanical properties compared to the unfilled crosslinked rubber. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Mesoporous silica particles were grafted with thermoresponsive poly(ethyleneoxide‐b‐N‐vinylcaprolactam), PEO‐b‐PVCL. N‐vinylcaprolactam was first polymerized on particle surfaces using surface initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI‐ATRP) and then, the poly(ethyleneoxide) blocks were attached to the PVCL chain ends with click chemistry. The sizes, thermoresponsiviness, and colloidal stability of SiO2‐PVCL and SiO2‐PVCL‐b‐PEO particles and their aqueous dispersions were studied by scanning electron microscopy, turbidimetry, dynamic light scattering, zeta sizer, and microcalorimetry. The phase separation temperature of the PEO‐b‐PVCL grafted particles did not considerably differ from that of the SiO2‐PVCL particles. The zeta potential of the grafted particles was close to zero at room temperature but decreased strongly upon heating. The decrease is related to the collapse of the PVCL blocks and correspondingly, the exposure of the silica surface toward the aqueous phase. The colloidal stability of the particles could be enhanced by adding PEO blocks to the chain ends of the PVCL grafts. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. In this report, we synthesized poly(N‐vinyl imidazole) (PNVI) grafted silica nanoparticles (SiNP) by using RAFT polymerization through grafting‐from approach to demonstrate that the self‐assembled structure of SiNP is the key diving force in improving physical properties of SiNP based nanocomposites. In a multistep synthetic process, well‐defined PNVI chains with tunable molecular weights and surface chain densities were grown from the RAFT agent anchored SiNP surface using N‐vinyl imidazole (NVI) as a monomer. Spectroscopic and thermal analysis confirmed surface grafting of PNVI on SiNP surface and the amount of grafted PNVI chins were also quantified. The mean diameter of the PNVI grafted SiNP (PNVI‐g‐SiNP) particles altered between 50 and 100 nm with the variation of PNVI chain lengths. The present approach is metal‐catalyst free, straight forward, and provides PNVI functionalized SiNP in a simple manner in comparison to the reported methods. Further, these PNVI‐g‐SiNP particles were used as a nanofiller to prepare nanocomposites with Poly(4,4′‐diphenylether‐5,5′‐bibenzimidazole) (OPBI). These nanocomposites displayed significantly higher mechanical, proton conductivity and less acid leaching properties than the pristine OPBI. The anisotropic self‐assembled ordered structure formation of nanofillers in the nanocomposites believed to be the driving force for the enhanced physical properties. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of superhydrophobic poly(methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, MPTS‐b‐2,‐2,3,3,4,4,4‐heptafluorobutyl methacrylate, HFBMA)‐grafted silica hybrid nanoparticles (SiO2/PMPTS‐b‐PHFBMA) were prepared by two‐step surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI‐ATRP). Under the adopted polymerization conditions in our previous work, the superhydrophobic property was found to depend on the SI‐ATRP conditions of HFBMA. As a series of work, in this present study, the effects of polymerization conditions, such as the initiator concentration, the molar ratio of monomer and initiator, and the polymerization temperature on the SI‐ATRP kinetics and the interrelation between the kinetics and the surface properties of the nanoparticles were investigated. The results showed that the SI‐ATRP of HFBMA was well controlled. The results also showed that both the surface microphase separation and roughness of the hybrid nanoparticles could be strengthened with the increase of the molecular weight of polymer‐grafted silica hybrid nanoparticles. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. It is now well established that controlling the grafted chain lengths and densities on nanoparticle surfaces determines the effective interactions between particles, and their assembly. Here, we present unusual kinetic results for achieving grafted chain lengths longer than the free chains using reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and discuss the limitations to obtaining polymer grafting density higher than ~0.06 chains/nm2. We observe that surface initiated polymerization grows faster than the free chains in solution with high RAFT agent coverage (1.95 agents/nm2) on nanoparticles. The time‐dependence of graft density suggests that activation of the anchored chain transfer agent (CTA) is limited by the diffusion of macro‐radicals within growing grafts. Thus, radical transfer and exchange reactions become inefficient between grafts and free polymer, and convert the surface‐initiated RAFT mechanism to a free radical polymerization. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Positively charged nanoparticles (NPs) are very interesting for biomedical and pharmaceutical applications, such as nonviral gene delivery. Here, the synthesis of SiO2 nanoparticles with a covalently grafted poly(2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline) (PEtOx) shell (SiO2@PEtOx) is presented. PEtOx with a degree of polymerization of 20 and 38 is synthesized via microwave supported cationic ring‐opening polymerization and subsequently end‐functionalized with a triethoxysilyl linker for subsequent grafting to silica particles with hydrodynamic radii of 7, 31, and 152 nm. The resulting SiO2@PEtOx particles are characterized by using dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM, cryoTEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to determine changes in particle size. Thermal gravimetrical analysis is used to quantify the amount of polymer on the silica surface. Subsequent in situ transformation of SiO2@PEtOx particles into SiO2@P(EtOx‐stat‐EI) (poly(2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline‐stat‐ethylene imine) grafted silica particles) under acidic conditions inverts the surface charge from negative to positive according to ζ‐potential measurements. The P(EtOx‐stat‐EI) shell could be used for the deposition of Au NP afterward.

The immobilization of reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agents on silica for surface‐initiated RAFT polymerizations (SI‐RAFT) via the Z‐group approach was studied systematically in dependence of the functionality of the RAFT‐agent anchor group. Monoalkoxy‐, dialkoxy‐, and trialkoxy silyl ether groups were incorporated into trithiocarbonate‐type RAFT agents and bound to planar silica surfaces as well as to silica nanoparticles. The immobilization efficiency and the structure of the bound RAFT‐agent film varied strongly in dependence of the used solvent (toluene vs. 1,2‐dimethoxyethane) and the anchor group functionality, as evidenced by atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and UV/Vis spectroscopy. Surface‐initiated RAFT polymerizations using functionalized silica nanoparticles revealed that grafted oligomers, which often occur in SI‐RAFT, are not formed within the crosslinked structures that originate from the immobilization, and that RAFT‐agent films that show less aggregation during the immobilization are more efficient during SI‐RAFT in terms of polymer grafting density. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The hairy poly(methacrylic acid‐co‐divinylbenzene)‐g‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (P(MAA‐co‐DVB)‐g‐PNIPAm) nanocapsules with pH‐responsive P(MAA‐co‐DVB) inner shell and temperature‐responsive PNIPAm brushes were prepared by combined distillation–precipitation copolymerization and surface thiol‐ene click grafting reaction using 3‐(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate‐modified silica (SiO2‐MPS) nanospheres as a sacrificial core material. The well‐defined PNIPAm was synthesized by a reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The chain end was converted to a thiol by chemical reduction. The PNIPAm was integrated into the nanocapsules via thiol‐ene click reaction. The surface thiol‐ene click reaction conduced to tunable grafting density of PNIPAm brushes. The grafting densities decreased from 0.70 chains nm?2 to 0.15 chains nm?2 with increasing the molecular weight of grafted PNIPAm chains. Using water soluble doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX·HCl) as a model molecular, the tunable shell permeability of the nanocapsule was investigated in detail. The permeability constant can be tuned by controlling the thickness of the P(MAA‐co‐DVB) inner shell, the grafting density of PNIPAm brushes, and the environmental pH and temperature. The tunable shell permeability of these nanocapsules results in the release of the loaded guest molecules with manipulable releasing kinetics. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. The preparation of carboxylic acid‐coated silica nanoparticles was investigated. A monolayer of carboxylic acid residues with controllable graft density was anchored to the nanoparticle by a ring‐opening reaction with succinic anhydride. Poly(methacrylic acid) [poly(MAA)] grafted nanoparticles were prepared via a polymerization–deprotection strategy. Tert‐butyl methacrylate was polymerized from the surface of silica nanoparticles in a predictable manner and with excellent control over the molecular weight distribution. Subsequent removal of the tert‐butyl group resulted in poly (MAA) grafted nanoparticles. The polymer nanoparticles were also functionalized with dyes, which may be useful in tracking the particles in biological systems. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of the chain constraint on the glass‐transition temperature of polystyrene (pS) was studied in the context of polymer tethering to curved surfaces. The synthesis and characterization of silica‐graft‐polystyrene (SiO2‐g‐pS) hybrid nanoparticles is reported. Silica nanoparticles possessing covalently bound pS chains were prepared by the atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene from functionalized colloidal surfaces. These hybrid nanoparticles serve as interesting examples of spherical polymer brushes, as a high density of grafted pS was achieved on the inorganic colloid. The confirmation of a brushlike extension of immobilized chains in a good solvent was obtained with dynamic light scattering in toluene of SiO2‐g‐pS colloids possessing various molar masses of tethered pS. The solid‐state morphology of SiO2‐g‐pS ultrathin films was assessed with transmission electron microscopy, and this confirmed that the silica colloids were well‐dispersed in a matrix of the tethered polymer. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to study the effects of tethering and chain immobilization on the glass‐transition temperature of pS. The measured glass‐transition temperature of annealed bulk films of the hybrid nanoparticles was elevated with respect to the value for pure bulk pS. The enhancements ranged from 13 to 2 K for SiO2‐g‐pS brushes possessing tethered pS with number‐average molecular weights of 5230 and 32,670 g/mol, respectively. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization was used to produce poly(methyl acrylate) (pMA) loops grafted onto silica nanoparticles using doubly anchored bifunctional RAFT agents 1,4‐bis(3′‐trimethoxysilylpropyltrithiocarbonylmethyl)benzene (Z‐group approach) and 1,6‐bis(o,p‐2′‐trimethoxysilylethylbenzyltrithiocarbonyl)hexane (R‐group approach) as mediators. In both cases, molecular weights of the resulting surface‐confined polymer loops increased with monomer conversion, whereas the grafting density was significantly higher in the case of the R‐group supported RAFT polymerization due to mechanistic differences of the RAFT process at the surface. This result was evident from thermogravimetric analysis and supported by scanning electron microscopy. Polymer loops with molecular weights up to 53,000 g mol?1 were accessible with polydispersities of about 2.0 without and 1.5 with the addition of free RAFT agent. UV signals of the detached pMA loops measured via size exclusion chromatography were shifted to higher molecular weights compared with the corresponding RI signals, indicating branching reactions caused by the close proximity of growing radicals and polymer at the surface of the silica nanoparticles. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Silica–polystyrene core‐shell particles were successfully prepared by surface‐mediated reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of styrene monomer from the surfaces of the silica‐supported RAFT agents. Initially, macro‐RAFT agents were synthesized by RAFT polymerization of γ‐methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) in the presence of chain transfer agents (CTAs). Immobilization of CTAs onto the silica surfaces was then performed by reacting silica with macro‐RAFT agents via a silane coupling. Grafting of polymer onto silica forms core‐shell nanostructures and shows a sharp contrast between silica core and polymer shell in the phase composition. The thickness of grafted‐polymer shell and the diameter of core‐shell particles increase with the increasing ratio of monomer to silica. A control experiment was carried out by conventional free radical emulsion copolymerization of MPS‐grafted silica and styrene under comparable conditions. The resulting data provide further insight into the chemical composition of grafted‐polymers that are grown from the silica surface through RAFT process. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. cis‐Selective polymerizations of isoprene with the catalysts composed of η5‐C5H4(R)TiCl3 (1; R?H, 2 ; tert‐Bu) and methylaluminoxane were investigated. Both catalysts showed remarkable catalytic activities for the polymerization of isoprene. The polymerization activities were strongly affected by the substituent introduced on cyclopentadienyl ring. Introduction of bulky tert‐butyl group was found to be effective for enhancement of polymerization activity, but the cis‐content of polyisoprene prepared by the 2 /MAO catalyst was lower than that by 1 /MAO catalyst. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of amphiphilic silica/fluoropolymer nanoparticles of SiO2‐g‐P(PEGMA)‐b‐P(12FMA) were prepared by silica surface‐initiating atom transfer radical polymerization (SI‐ATRP) of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA) and poly dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (P12FMA). Their amphiphilic behavior, lower critical solution temperature (LCST), and surface properties as protein‐resistance coatings were characterized. The introduction of hydrophobic P(12FMA) block leads SiO2‐g‐P(PEGMA)‐b‐P(12FMA) to form individual spherical nanoparticles (~150 nm in water and ~170 nm in THF solution) as P(PEGMA)‐b‐P(12FMA) shell grafted on SiO2 core (~130 nm), to gain obvious lower LCST at 36–52 °C and higher thermostability at 290–320 °C than SiO2‐g‐P(PEGMA) (LCST = 78–90 °C, Td = 220 °C). The water‐casted SiO2‐g‐P(PEGMA)‐b‐P(12FMA) films obtain much rougher surface (125.3–178.4 nm) than THF‐casted films (11.5–16.9 nm) and all SiO2‐g‐P(PEGMA) films (26.8–31.3 nm). Therefore, the water‐casted surfaces exhibit obvious higher water adsorption amount (Δf = ?494 ~ ?426 Hz) and harder adsorbed layer (viscoelasticity of ΔD/Δf = ?0.28 ~ ?0.36 × 10?6/Hz) than SiO2‐g‐P(PEGMA) films, but present loser adsorbed layer than THF‐casted films (ΔD/Δf = ?0.29 ~ ?0.63 × 10?6/Hz). While, the introduction of P(12FMA) segments does not show obviously reduce in the protein‐repelling adsorption of SiO2‐g‐P(PEGMA)‐b‐P(12FMA) films (△f = ?15.7 ~ ?22.3 Hz) compared with SiO2‐g‐P(PEGMA) films (△f = ?8.3 ~ ?11.3 Hz) and no obvious influence on water adsorption of ancient stone. Therefore, SiO2‐g‐P(PEGMA)‐b‐P(12FMA) is suggested to be used as protein‐resistance coatings. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2016 , 54, 381–393 相似文献

Surface‐initiated reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (SI‐RAFT) polymerization of N‐[3‐(dimethylamino)propyl]methacrylamide (DMAPMA) on the silicon wafer was conducted in attempt to create controllable cationic polymer films. The RAFT agent‐immobilized substrate was prepared by the silanization of hydroxyl groups on silicon wafer with 3‐aminopropylthriethoxysilane (APTS) and by the amide reaction of amine groups of APTS with ester groups of 4‐cyano‐4‐((thiobenzoyl) sulfanyl) pentanoic succinimide ester (CPSE); followed by the RAFT polymerization of DMAPMA using a “free” RAFT agent, that is, 4‐cyanopentanoic acid dithiobenzoate (CPAD) and an initiator, that is, 4,4′‐azobis‐4‐cyanopentanoic acid (CPA). The formation of homogeneous tethered poly(N‐[3‐(dimethylamino)propyl]methacrylamide) [poly(DMAPMA)] brushes, whose thickness can be tuned by reaction time varying, is evidenced by using the combination of grazing angle attenuated total reflectance‐Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and water contact‐angle measurements. The calculation of grafting parameters from the number‐average molecular weight, M n (g/mol) and ellipsometric thickness, h (nm) values indicated the synthesis of densely grafted poly(DMAPMA) films and allowed us to predict a polymerization time for forming a “brush‐like” conformation for the chains. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The silica–polyvinyl imidazole core–shell nanoparticles (silica/PVI NPs) with controlled shell thickness and narrow distribution size were fabricated via “grafting‐to” method. First, O‐ethyl xanthate terminated PVI with various chain lengths was produced via the reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization using O‐ethyl‐S‐phenyl dithiocarbonate (EPDC) as RAFT agent. Next, three synthesized PVI of different molecular weights (3.4, 6.6, and 11 kg/mol) were successfully grafted to the methacrylate modified silica NPs from solution by radical mediated grafting‐to method. These core–shell NPs were then characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X‐ray photoelectron spectrum measurements (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Polyvinyl imidazole molecular weight, reaction time, polymer concentration, and reaction temperature were all used to control the grafting reaction for PVI grafting densities and shell thicknesses. The highest grafting density obtained was close to 1.2 chains/nm2 and was achieved for 3.4 kg/mol PVI at 80°C. The prepared silica/PVINP displayed efficient antifouling properties and stability in concentrated sodium chloride aqueous solutions over a broad pH range for a period of at least 7 days. A facile method to prepare shape memory polymers crosslinked by SiO2 is described. A series of biodegradable shape memory networks were obtained through thiol‐ene reaction triggered by UV irradiation between surface‐thiol‐modified SiO2 nanoparticles and end‐acrylate poly (ε‐caprolactone) (PCL). The highly selective thiol‐ene reaction ensured a uniform distribution of PCL chains between crosslinkers, contributing well‐defined network architecture with enhanced mechanical and shape‐memory properties. Thiol‐functionalized silica nanoparticle was characterized by using FTIR and XPS analysis, and 1H NMR spectra was used to confirm the successful modification of terminal hydroxyl group of PCL diol. Surface‐modified silica particles were found well dispersible in acrylate‐capped PCL supported by SEM. Thermal and crystalline behaviors of the obtained polymers were analyzed by DSC and XRD, and DMA measurement proved good mechanical property. The shape memory behavior and tensile strength was somewhat tunable by the length of PCL. Acceptably, sample SiO2‐SMP2k presented 99% recovery ratio and 97% shape fixity, and its relatively high tensile strength showed an attractive potential for biomedical application. Finally, a possible molecular mechanism accounting for the shape memory property was illustrated. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Phys. 2017 , 55, 692–701 相似文献

Silicic acid produced from sodium metasilicate hydrate and metallocene polyethylene–octene elastomer (POE) were chosen as the ceramic precursor and the continuous phase, respectively, for preparation of new hybrids by an in situ sol–gel process. To obtain a better hybrid, the acrylic acid‐grafted polyethylene–octene elastomer (POE‐g‐AA) prepared in our laboratory and used as the continuous phase was also investigated. Characterizations of POE/SiO2 and POE‐g‐AA/SiO2 composites were performed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 29Si solid‐state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometry, X‐ray diffractometry, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry analysis, and an Instron mechanical tester. The POE‐g‐AA/SiO2 hybrid could give the positive effect on the properties of POE/SiO2 hybrid because the carboxylic acid groups of acrylic acid should act as coordination sites for the silica phase to form chemical bonds. The result of 29Si solid‐state NMR spectra showed that Si atom coordination around SiO4 units is predominantly Q3 and Q4. Also, the POE‐g‐AA/SiO2 hybrid with 15 wt % SiO2 gave the maximum values of tensile strength and glass‐transition temperature because excess particles might cause the separation between the organic and inorganic phases when the silica content was beyond this point. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymerization‐induced self‐assembly (PISA) has become the preferred method of preparing self‐assembled nano‐objects based on amphiphilic block copolymers. The PISA methodology has also been extended to the realization of colloidal nanocomposites, such as polymer–silica hybrid particles. In this work, we compare two methods to prepare nanoparticles based on self‐assembly of block copolymers bearing a core‐forming block with a reactive alkoxysilane moiety (3‐(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate, MPS), namely (i) RAFT emulsion polymerization using a hydrophilic macroRAFT agent and (ii) solution‐phase self‐assembly upon slow addition of a selective solvent. Emulsion polymerization under both ab initio and seeded conditions were studied, as well the use of different initiating systems. Effective and reproducible chain extension (and hence PISA) of MPS via thermally initiated RAFT emulsion polymerization was compromised due to the hydrolysis and polycondensation of MPS occurring under the reaction conditions employed. A more successful approach to block copolymer self‐assembly was achieved via polymerization in a good solvent for both blocks (1,4‐dioxane) followed by the slow addition of water, yielding spherical nanoparticles that increased in size as the length of the solvophobic block was increased. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymer chains of PMMA were grown from nano titania (n‐TiO2) by the reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization process. The mechanism and kinetics of MMA polymerization from both solution and “grafted from” n‐TiO2 were studied. The RAFT agent, 4‐cyano‐4‐(dodecylsulfanylthiocarbonyl) sulfanyl pentanoic acid, with an available carboxyl group was used to anchor onto the n‐TiO2 surface, with the S?C(SC12H25) moiety used for subsequent RAFT polymerization of MMA to form n‐TiO2/PMMA nanocomposites. The functionalization of n‐TiO2 was determined by FTIR, XPS, partitioning studies, and thermal analysis. The livingness of the polymerization was verified using NMR and GPC, while the dispersion of the inorganic filler in the polymer was studied using electron microscopy, FTIR, and thermal analysis. The monomer conversion and molecular weight kinetics were explored for the living RAFT polymerization, both in solution and grafted from n‐TiO2, with first‐order kinetics being observed in both cases. Increased graft density on n‐TiO2 led to a lower rate of polymerization. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 3926–3937, 2008 相似文献
