We theoretically study the synchronization between collective oscillations exhibited by two weakly interacting groups of nonidentical phase oscillators with internal and external global sinusoidal couplings of the groups. Coupled amplitude equations describing the collective oscillations of the oscillator groups are obtained by using the Ott-Antonsen ansatz, and then coupled phase equations for the collective oscillations are derived by phase reduction of the amplitude equations. The collective phase coupling function, which determines the dynamics of macroscopic phase differences between the groups, is calculated analytically. We demonstrate that the groups can exhibit effective antiphase collective synchronization even if the microscopic external coupling between individual oscillator pairs belonging to different groups is in-phase, and similarly effective in-phase collective synchronization in spite of microscopic antiphase external coupling between the groups.

The collective phase response to a macroscopic external perturbation of a population of interacting nonlinear elements exhibiting collective oscillations is formulated for the case of globally coupled oscillators. The macroscopic phase sensitivity is derived from the microscopic phase sensitivity of the constituent oscillators by a two-step phase reduction. We apply this result to quantify the stability of the macroscopic common-noise-induced synchronization of two uncoupled populations of oscillators undergoing coherent collective oscillations.

We study the transition to phase synchronization in two diffusively coupled, nonidentical Chua oscillators. In the experiments, depending on the used parameterization, we observe several distinct routes to phase synchronization, including states of either in-phase, out-of-phase, or antiphase synchronization, which may be intersected by an intermediate desynchronization regime with large fluctuations of the frequency difference. Furthermore, we report the first experimental evidence of an anomalous transition to phase synchronization, which is characterized by an initial enlargement of the natural frequency difference with coupling strength. This results in a maximal frequency disorder at intermediate coupling levels, whereas usual phase synchronization via monotonic decrease in frequency difference sets in only for larger coupling values. All experimental results are supported by numerical simulations of two coupled Chua models.

The dynamic behavior of coupled chaotic oscillators is investigated. For small coupling, chaotic state undergoes a transition from a spatially disordered phase to an ordered phase with an orientation symmetry breaking. For large coupling, a transition from full synchronization to partial synchronization with translation symmetry breaking is observed. Two bifurcation branches, one in-phase branch starting from synchronous chaos and the other antiphase branch bifurcated from spatially random chaos, are identified by varying coupling strength epsilon. Hysteresis, bistability, and first-order transitions between these two branches are observed.

Synaptically coupled neurons show in-phase or antiphase synchrony depending on the chemical and dynamical nature of the synapse. Deterministic theory helps predict the phase differences between two phase-locked oscillators when the coupling is weak. In the presence of noise, however, deterministic theory faces difficulty when the coexistence of multiple stable oscillatory solutions occurs. We analyze the solution structure of two coupled neuronal oscillators for parameter values between a subcritical Hopf bifurcation point and a saddle node point of the periodic branch that bifurcates from the Hopf point, where a rich variety of coexisting solutions including asymmetric localized oscillations occurs. We construct these solutions via a multiscale analysis and explore the general bifurcation scenario using the lambda-omega model. We show for both excitatory and inhibitory synapses that noise causes important changes in the phase and amplitude dynamics of such coupled neuronal oscillators when multiple oscillatory solutions coexist. Mixed-mode oscillations occur when distinct bistable solutions are randomly visited. The phase difference between the coupled oscillators in the localized solution, coexisting with in-phase or antiphase solutions, is clearly represented in the stochastic phase dynamics.

A living coupled oscillator system was constructed by a cell patterning method with a plasmodial slime mold, in which parameters such as coupling strength and distance between the oscillators can be systematically controlled. Rich oscillation phenomena between the two-coupled oscillators, namely, desynchronizing and antiphase/in-phase synchronization were observed according to these parameters. Both experimental and theoretical approaches showed that these phenomena are closely related to the time delay effect in interactions between the oscillators.

We show that chaotic bursting activity observed in coupled neural oscillators is a kind of chaotic itinerancy. In neuronal systems with phase deformation along the trajectory, diffusive coupling induces a dephasing effect. Because of this effect, an antiphase synchronized solution is stable for weak coupling, while an in-phase solution is stable for very strong coupling. For intermediate coupling, a chaotic bursting activity is generated. It is a mixture of three different states: an antiphase firing state, an in-phase firing state, and a nonfiring resting state. As we construct numerically the deformed torus manifold underlying the chaotic bursting state, it is shown that the three unstable states are connected to give rise to a global chaotic itinerancy structure. Thus we claim that chaotic itinerancy provides an alternative route to chaos via torus breakdown.

The effect of noise on phase synchronization in small sets and larger populations of weakly coupled chaotic oscillators is explored. Both independent and correlated noise are found to enhance phase synchronization of two coupled chaotic oscillators below the synchronization threshold; this is in contrast to the behavior of two coupled periodic oscillators. This constructive effect of noise results from the interplay between noise and the locking features of unstable periodic orbits. We show that in a population of nonidentical chaotic oscillators, correlated noise enhances synchronization in the weak coupling region. The interplay between noise and weak coupling induces a collective motion in which the coherence is maximal at an optimal noise intensity. Both the noise-enhanced phase synchronization and the coherence resonance numerically observed in coupled chaotic R?ssler oscillators are verified experimentally with an array of chaotic electrochemical oscillators.

Experimental observations of time-delay-induced amplitude death in two coupled nonlinear electronic circuits that are individually capable of exhibiting limit-cycle oscillations are described. The existence of multiply connected death islands in the parameter space of coupling strength and time delay for coupled identical oscillators is established. The existence of such regions was predicted earlier on theoretical grounds [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 5109 (1998); Physica (Amsterdam) 129D, 15 (1999)]. The experiments also reveal the occurrence of multiple frequency states, frequency suppression of oscillations with increased time delay, and the onset of both in-phase and antiphase collective oscillations.

We study phase synchronization in oscillator networks through phase reduced method. The dynamics of networks is reduced to phase equations by this method. Analysing the phase equations through the master stability function method, one obtains that the oscillators with identical frequency can be in-phase synchronized by weak balanced coupling. Similarly, the problem of frequency synchronization of oscillators with different frequencies is transformed to the existence of a locally asymptotically stable equilibrium of the phase error system.

The effect of stirring in an inhomogeneous oscillatory medium is investigated. We show that the stirring rate can control the macroscopic behavior of the system producing collective oscillations (synchronization) or complete quenching of the oscillations (oscillator death). We interpret the homogenization rate due to mixing as a measure of global coupling and compare the phase diagrams of stirred oscillatory media and of populations of globally coupled oscillators.

We study the emergence of collective synchronization in large directed networks of heterogeneous oscillators by generalizing the classical Kuramoto model of globally coupled phase oscillators to more realistic networks. We extend recent theoretical approximations describing the transition to synchronization in large undirected networks of coupled phase oscillators to the case of directed networks. We also consider the case of networks with mixed positive-negative coupling strengths. We compare our theory with numerical simulations and find good agreement.

Recently, the phase-flip bifurcation has been described as a fundamental transition in time-delay coupled, phase-synchronized nonlinear dynamical systems. The bifurcation is characterized by a change of the synchronized dynamics from being in-phase to antiphase, or vice versa; the phase-difference between the oscillators undergoes a jump of pi as a function of the coupling strength or the time delay. This phase-flip is accompanied by discontinuous changes in the frequency of the synchronized oscillators, and in the largest negative Lyapunov exponent or its derivative. Here we illustrate the phenomenology of the bifurcation for several classes of nonlinear oscillators, in the regimes of both periodic and chaotic dynamics. We present extensive numerical simulations and compute the oscillation frequencies and the Lyapunov spectra as a function of the coupling strength. In particular, our simulations provide clear evidence of the phase-flip bifurcation in excitable laser and Fitzhugh-Nagumo neuronal models, and in diffusively coupled predator-prey models with either limit cycle or chaotic dynamics. Our analysis demonstrates marked jumps of the time-delayed and instantaneous fluxes between the two interacting oscillators across the bifurcation; this has strong implications for the performance of the system as well as for practical applications. We further construct an electronic circuit consisting of two coupled Chua oscillators and provide the first formal experimental demonstration of the bifurcation. In totality, our study demonstrates that the phase-flip phenomenon is of broad relevance and importance for a wide range of physical and natural systems.

We investigate the dynamics of systems of many coupled phase oscillators with heterogeneous frequencies. We suppose that the oscillators occur in M groups. Each oscillator is connected to other oscillators in its group with "attractive" coupling, such that the coupling promotes synchronization within the group. The coupling between oscillators in different groups is "repulsive," i.e., their oscillation phases repel. To address this problem, we reduce the governing equations to a lower-dimensional form via the ansatz of Ott and Antonsen, Chaos 18, 037113 (2008). We first consider the symmetric case where all group parameters are the same, and the attractive and repulsive coupling are also the same for each of the M groups. We find a manifold L of neutrally stable equilibria, and we show that all other equilibria are unstable. For M?≥?3, L has dimension M?-?2, and for M?=?2, it has dimension 1. To address the general asymmetric case, we then introduce small deviations from symmetry in the group and coupling parameters. Doing a slow/fast timescale analysis, we obtain slow time evolution equations for the motion of the M groups on the manifold L. We use these equations to study the dynamics of the groups and compare the results with numerical simulations.

We examine the dynamics of two time-delay coupled Nishio-Inaba circuits exhibiting limit-cycle motion. By numerically solving the governing delay-differential equations, we show that the delay coupled Nishio-Inaba circuits undergo a phase-flip transition. Our results reveal that depending on the strength of coupling and the amount of time-delay, the relative phase between the oscillators changes from in-phase to anti-phase and vice versa, and the pattern repeats with increasing delay. We also verify our numerical predictions using OrCAD PSpice circuit simulation.

We study chaos synchronization experimentally in a modulated globally coupled three-mode laser with different modal gains subjected to self-mixing Doppler-shifted feedback, which can apply the loss modulation to individual modes at Doppler-shift frequencies. Depending on the pump power, different forms of collective chaos synchronizations were found to appear when the laser was modulated at the highest relaxation oscillation frequency, reflecting the change in cross-saturation coefficient among modes. In the present experiment, each pair of modes exhibited phase, lag, or generalized synchronization collectively according to the inherent antiphase dynamics, where these types of synchronization have already been demonstrated in two coupled chaotic oscillators in different physical systems. Information flows among oscillating modes which are established in different forms of collective chaos synchronizations were characterized by information-circulation analysis of the experimental time series. The order parameter dynamics of a mean-field model is frequently investigated in macroscopic cumulant dynamics, from which a bifurcation can be predicted qualitatively. In this Letter, for quantitatively investigating the long-time order parameter dynamics, a semi-analytic method is proposed based on approximate nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations. Applying the new method to the mean-field model of periodically driven overdamped bistable oscillators with colored noise, we exhibit the bifurcation behavior and the nonlinear stochastic resonance of the order parameter by tuning noise intensity or coupling coefficient, and the accuracy of the new method are verified by direct simulation. Our observations disclose some new properties about the order parameter dynamics of the mean-field model. For example, the periodic signal shifts the critical coupling coefficient to a larger value, while the nonzero correlation time of the colored noise shifts it to a lower value. Our observation also discloses that there is no quantitatively corresponding relation between the resonant peak and the critical bifurcation parameter of the Gaussian moment system.

We consider the behavior of Stuart-Landau oscillators as generic limit-cycle oscillators when they are interacting with delay. We investigate the role of amplitude and phase instabilities in producing symmetry-breaking/restoring transitions. Using analytical and numerical methods we compare the dynamics of one oscillator with delayed feedback, two oscillators mutually coupled with delay, and two delay-coupled elements with self-feedback. Taking only the phase dynamics into account, no chaotic dynamics is observed, and the stability of the identical synchronization solution is the same in each of the three studied networks of delay-coupled elements. When allowing for a variable oscillation amplitude, the delay can induce amplitude instabilities. We provide analytical proof that, in case of two mutually coupled elements, the onset of an amplitude instability always results in antiphase oscillations, leading to a leader-laggard behavior in the chaotic regime. Adding self-feedback with the same strength and delay as the coupling stabilizes the system in the transverse direction and, thus, promotes the onset of identically synchronized behavior.
