With a shell of PVA–melamine–formaldehyde resin, microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate (VMFAPP) is prepared by in situ polymerization and characterized by FTIR and XPS. Microencapsulation gives VMFAPP better water resistance and flame retardance compared with APP in PP. Thermal stability and fire resistance behavior have been analyzed and compared. The LOI value of the PP/VMFAPP composite is higher than that of the PP/APP composite. The UL 94 ratings of most of the PP/VMFAPP composites are V‐0, whereas PP/APP gives no rating at the 30% additive level. The water resistant properties of the PP composites are studied. Results of the cone calorimeter experiment show that VMFAPP is an effective flame retardant in PP compared with APP. The thermal degradation behaviors of APP and VMFAPP have been studied using TG and dynamic FTIR. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

With a shell of starch-melamine-formaldehyde (SMF) resin, core/shell-like ammonium polyphosphate (SMFAPP) is prepared by in situ polymerization, and is characterized by SEM, FTIR and XPS. The shell leads SMFAPP a high water resistance and flame retardance compared with APP in polypropylene (PP). The flame retardant action of SMFAPP and APP in PP are studied using LOI, UL 94 test and cone calorimeter, and their thermal stability is evaluated by TG. The flame retardancy and water resistance of the PP/SMFAPP composite at the same loading is better than that of the PP/APP composite. UL 94 ratings of PP/SMFAPP can reach V-0 at 30 wt% loading. The flame retardant mechanism of SMFAPP was studied by dynamic FTIR, TG and cone calorimeter, etc.  相似文献

Ethyl cellulose, a widely used bio-degradable shell material, microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate (MAPP) was added to the bio-degradable poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) to improve its flame retardancy, compatibility, and thermal stability. The MAPP was well characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), water contact angle, and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. The SEM results indicate the improved dispersion of MAPP into PBS matrix and the formation of the strong interfacial adhesion between MAPP and PBS than APP. With the incorporation of MAPP and char-forming agent into PBS, the limiting oxygen index of the composite was increased to 35.5 %, and the sample can pass the UL-94 V-0 rating, while the un-microencapsulated counterpart cannot reach the rating. The cone calorimeter test showed that the peak heat release rate was decreased by 46.7 % and the burning time was also prolonged compared to the pure PBS. The increased melt flow index and rheology test indicated the increase of viscosity and the improvement of anti-dripping properties. Moreover, the mechanical properties and thermal stability of MAPP composite were also obviously enhanced after the microencapsulation by mechanical, dynamical mechanical thermal analysis, and TG analysis.  相似文献

Microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate (MAPP) with polyurethane resin has been prepared by in situ polymerization. The combination of MAPP and boron phosphate (BP) on the flammability properties of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) was studied by vertical burning (UL‐94) tests, limiting oxygen index tests, cone calorimetry (CONE), and microscale combustion calorimeter (MCC) whereas thermal stability was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis and real‐time Fourier transform infrared. Results showed that a suitable substitution of MAPP by BP could improve flame retardancy of the TPU/MAPP composites and TPU composites with MAPP/BP (15.5/2 wt%) achieving UL‐94 V‐0 rating. The CONE and MCC data showed synergistic effects between BP and MAPP in the composites. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

To improve the flame-retardant efficiency and water resistance of ammonium polyphosphate(APP), the UV-curable pentaerythritol triacrylate(PETA) was used to microencapsulate APP via the UV curing polymerization method. The prepared PETA-microencapsulated APP(PETA-APP) was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), and thermogravimetric(TG) analysis. PETA-APP was used as intumescent flame retardant(IFR) alone to flame retard polypropylene(PP). The water resistance of PP/PETA-APP composites was investigated, and the effect of PETA on the combustion behaviors of PP/APP composites was studied through limiting oxygen index(LOI), vertical burning test(UL-94) and cone calorimeter(CC) test, respectively. With 40 wt% of PETA-APP, the PP/PETA-APP system could achieve a LOI value of 30.0% and UL-94 V-0 rating after treatment in hot water for 168 h, while the LOI value of the system containing 40 wt% uncoated APP was only 19.2%, and it failed to pass the UL-94 rating. CC test results showed that the heat release rate(HRR), mass loss rate(MLR) and smoke production rate(SPR) of PP/PETAAPP system decreased significantly compared with PP/APP system, especially the peak of HRR was decreased by 51.4%. The mechanism for the improvement of flame reatardancy for PP/PETA-APP composites was discussed based on FTIR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) tests. All these results illustrated that simultaneous improvement of flame retardancy and water resistance for PP/APP was achieved through coating UV-curable PETA onto APP.  相似文献

A series of intumescent flame-retardant epoxy resins (IFR-EPs) were prepared only by adding a 5 wt% total loading of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and metal compounds. All the samples could achieve V-0 rating and did not generate dripping during UL-94 testing. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) values of the samples with 4.83 wt% APP and 0.17 wt% CoSA increase from 27.1 to 29.4, compared with epoxy resin containing 5 wt% APP. The samples also showed excellent water resistance of flame retardancy in 30 °C and 70 °C water for 168 h. The LOI results show that the composition of metal compounds (metal ions and ligands/anions) and the mass ratios of APP to metal compounds affect the flame retardancy of the samples. TG results indicate that the catalytic effect of CoSA on the decomposition of both APP and the epoxy resins containing APP is better than that of CuSAO. The fire behavior of epoxy resin and epoxy resins containing APP with/without CoSA were investigated by cone calorimeter. Cone calorimeter parameters of the samples such as HRR, THR, TSP and COP indicate that the addition of APP and CoSA improves the fire safety of epoxy resin significantly, and CoSA shows an obvious catalytic effect.  相似文献

The influence of microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate (MFAPP) on flame retardancy, thermal properties and water resistance of epoxy (EP) composite were investigated by LOI, UL-94, DSC, TG, microscale combustion calorimeter (MCC) and TG-FTIR. The results of DSC show that the shell outside MFAPP can increase its compatibility in EP. EP/MFAPP containing only 9 wt% MFAPP can pass V-0 in the UL-94 test, while neat EP cannot pass any rating. Due to the presence of shell, water treatment show few effects on the flame retardancy of EP/MFAPP, while LIO values of EP/APP decrease remarkably after treatment. The presence of MFAPP can reduce the heat release rate and total heat release of EP significantly in MCC test. The reason is that MFAPP can stimulate the dehydration of EP at low temperature and retard the release of pyrolysis gas at high temperature. Moreover, a char formed via the reaction of EP and MFAPP has excellent thermal stability and can prevent underlying materials from further combustion during a fire.  相似文献

Synergistic effect was observed between expandable graphite (EG) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) on flame retarded polylactide (PLA) in this paper using limiting oxygen index (LOI), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray spectroscopy (XPS) and cone calorimeter tests etc. In the experiments, PLA composites with 15 wt% of APP/EG(1:3) combinations showed a LOI value of 36.5 and V-0 rating in UL-94 tests, greatly improved flame retardant properties from composites with APP or EG alone. Results from TGA and cone calorimeter demonstrated that APP/EG combination could retard the degradation of polymeric materials above the temperature of 520 °C by promoting the formation of a compact char layer. This char layer protects the matrix effectively from heat penetrating inside and prevents its further degradation, resulting in lower weight loss rate and better flame retarded performance.  相似文献

In this paper, a halogen-free flame retardant with two different functional components was prepared via a simple method. The novelty of this work is the combination of acid source and char-forming agent in one compound simultaneously. And the advantage of this method lies in effectively avoiding the mixture of several components for composites during thermal processing and improving the flame retardancy of polymers. Besides, the chemical structure of modified ammonium phosphate (MAPP) was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction spectra (XRD), respectively. The results indicate that thermal decomposition process of APP after modification is obviously changed. When polypropylene (PP) is composited with 30 phr MAPP, the limiting oxygen index value can reach 28.5 % and pass vertical burning tests (UL-94) V-1 rating. Simultaneously, thermal gravimetric analysis demonstrates that the introduction of diethanolamine can improve the char-forming rate and char residue of PP/APP composites. Except that, the thermal pyrolysis of MAPP detected by FTIR spectra deduces that the char-forming process happens at 350–400 °C. The analysis on char residue after combustion indicates that the cross-linking bonds of P–O–C groups appear. At last, a potential condensed mechanism was primarily proposed.  相似文献

In this article, oyster shell powder (OSP) was used as fire safety agent with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) in thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composites. The synergistic fire safety improvement between OSP and APP was intensively investigated using limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94, smoke density test (SDT), and cone calorimeter test (CCT). There is a good synergistic effect of reducing the fire hazards when OSP was used with APP in TPU. The peak heat release rate (pHRR) of the sample with 2.0‐wt% OSP and 8.0‐wt% APP decreased to 86.8 kW/m2 from 175.7 kW/m2 of the sample with only 10.0‐wt% APP. The SDT results showed that the luminous flux of sample OSP2/APP8 was up to 28.9% at the end of experiment with flame, which was much higher than that of pure TPU (1.5%). The thermal stability and thermal decomposition of TPU composites were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis/Fourier infrared spectrum analysis (TG‐IR). The result revealed the inert gasses (including CO2 and water vapor) produced by the reaction between OSP and APP. A char formed on the surface of composites, hindered the flame spread, reduced the release of combustible gas, and restricted the precursor of smoke into combustion zone.  相似文献

APP@ETA, as a new type of flame retardant, was prepared by chemically modifying ammonium polyphosphate (APP) with ethanolamine (ETA) and applied to thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) in this study. Then, the smoke suppression properties and flame‐retardant effects of APP@ETA in TPU composites were evaluated using smoke density test, cone calorimeter test, etc. And, the thermal degradation properties of flame‐retardant TPU composites were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis/infrared spectrometry. The smoke density test results indicated that APP@ETA could obviously improve the luminous flux of TPU composites in the test with or without flame. The cone calorimeter test results showed that total smoke release, smoke production rate and smoke factor of the composites with APP@ETA were significantly decreased than those of the composites with APP. For example, when the loading of APP@ETA or APP was 12.5 wt%, the total smoke release of the sample with APP@ETA decreased to 3.5 m2/m2 from 6.0 m2/m2, which was much lower than that of the sample with APP, reduced by 41.7%. The thermogravimetric analysis results demonstrated that APP@ETA could decrease the initial decomposition temperature and improve the thermal stability at high temperature for TPU composites. The synergistic effect between a char forming agent (CFA) and microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate (MAPP) on the thermal and flame retardancy of polypropylene (PP) are investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 test, cone calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron micrograph (SEM), and water resistance test. The results of cone calorimetry show that heat release rate peak (PHRR), total heat release (THR), and the mass loss of PP with 30 wt% intumescent flame retardant (IFR, CFA/MAPP = 1:2) decreases remarkably compared with that of pure PP. The HRR, THR, and mass loss decrease, respectively from 1140 to 100 kW/m2, from 96 to 16.8 MJ/m2, and from 100 to 40%. The PP composite with CFA/MAPP = 1:2 has the best water resistance, and it can still obtain a UL‐94 V‐0 rating after 168 hr soaking in water. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, a new type of flame retardant (AF‐Fe) based on para‐aramid fiber (AF) which was modified with iron diethyl phosphinate was applied for thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer (TPU). The flame‐retardant properties of TPU were tested using cone calorimeter test, smoke density test, and thermogravimetric analysis/infrared spectrometry. The cone calorimeter test showed that AF‐Fe can greatly reduce the heat release rate, total heat release, smoke factor, and other parameters of TPU composites compared with the sample of TPU/AF. For example, the pHRR of the composite with 1.0 wt% AF‐Fe was reduced by 15.19% compared with the sample with the same content of pure AF. In addition, the smoke factor of TPU/AFFe3 was reduced by 50.52% and 15.63% compared with TPU0 and TPU/AF respectively. The results of smoke density test showed that the luminous flux of TPU/AFFe3 was increased by 79.26% compared with the sample of TPU/AF. The TG results revealed that the sample with TPU/AFFe3 had lower weight loss rate and higher char residue content at 700°C compared with the sample of TPU/AF.  相似文献

In this work, ammonium polyphosphate (APP) was microencapsulated by UV‐curable epoxy acrylate (EA) resin. The resulting novel EA‐microencapsulated APP (EA‐APP) was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, granulometry, and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. EA‐APP was used to flame retard polypropylene (PP). The water solubility of EA‐APP and the water resistance of PP/EA‐APP systems were investigated. The thermal stability and combustion behaviors of PP/EA‐APP composites were studied through TG and cone calorimeter (CC) tests, respectively. The water resistance test showed that the EA shell could significantly improve the water resistance of PP/APP. TG data illustrated that the char residue of EA‐APP greatly increased by 149% compared with uncoated APP, and the thermal stability of PP/EA‐APP composite was improved because of the microencapsulation of APP, with an increment of 248% for the char residue compared with PP/APP. CC test results indicated that the peak value of heat release rate, the total heat release, and the peak of smoke production rate of PP/EA‐APP decreased in comparison with PP/APP. The mechanism for the improvement of flame retardancy in CC test was discussed based on the experimental results. EA resin containing a large number of hydroxyl groups might promote the dehydration reaction in EA‐APP, which facilitated the formation of char residue and the stabilization of APP. Consequently, the flame‐retardant efficiency for APP was improved because of the presence of EA shell. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A novel ionic liquid containing phosphorus ([PCMIM]Cl) was synthesized and characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and 31P NMR. Moreover, a new intumescent flame retardant (IFR) system, which was composed of [PCMIM]Cl and ammonium polyphosphate (APP), was used to impart flame retardancy and dripping resistance to polypropylene (PP). The flammability and thermal behaviors of intumescent flame‐retarded PP (PP/IFR) composites were evaluated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 test, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and cone calorimeter test. It was found that there was an obvious synergistic effect between [PCMIM]Cl and APP. When the weight ratio of [PCMIM]Cl and APP was 1:5 and the total amount of IFR was kept at 30 wt%, LOI value of PP/IFR composite reached 31.8, and V‐0 rating was obtained. Moreover, both the peak heat release rate and the peak mass loss rate of PP/IFR composites decreased significantly relative to PP and PP/APP composite from cone calorimeter analysis. The TGA curves suggested that [PCMIM]Cl had good ability of char formation, and when combined with APP, it could greatly promote the char formation of PP/IFR composites, hence improved the flame retardancy. Additionally, the rheological behaviors and mechanical properties of PP/IFR composites were also investigated, and it was found that [PCMIM]Cl could also serve as an efficient lubricant and compatibilizer between APP and PP, endowing the materials with satisfying processability and mechanical properties.

The flame retardancy mechanisms of poly(1,4‐butylene terephthalate) (PBT) containing microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate (MAPP) and melamine cyanurate (MC) were investigated via pyrolysis analysis (thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), real‐time Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), TG‐IR), cone calorimeter test, combustion tests (limited oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94), and residue analysis (scanning electron microscopy (SEM)). A loading of 20 wt% MC to PBT gave the PBT composites an LOI of 26%, V‐2 classification in UL‐94 test and a high peak heat release rate (HRR) in cone calorimeter test. Adding APP to PBT/MC composites did not improve their flame retardancy. In comparison with the addition of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) to PBT, MAPP with silica gel shell and MAPP with polyurethane shell both promoted the intumescent char‐forming and improved the flame retardancy of PBT through different mechanisms in the presence of MC. These two halogen‐free PBT composites with V‐0 classification according to UL‐94 test were obtained; their LOI were 32 and 33%, respectively. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

It is mainly studied that the smoke-suppression properties and synergistic flame-retardant effect of hollow glass microsphere (HM) in flame retardant thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composites based on ammonium polyphosphate (APP) as a flame-retardant. Also, the smoke suppression properties and flame-retardant effect were investigated by smoke density test (SDT), cone calorimeter test (CCT), limiting oxygen index, and thermogravimetric analysis, separately. The char residues left after CCT were examined by scanning electron microscopy. The data of SDT shows that HM could effectively decrease smoke production of TPU composites. The results of CCT reveal that the system of APP/HM could reduce heat release rate, smoke production rate, and total smoke release. It is shown that APP/HM is a good system with smoke-suppression and synergistic flame-retardant properties in flame-retardant TPU composites.  相似文献
