Internal plasticization of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) using thermal azide‐alkyne Huisgen dipolar cycloaddition between azidized PVC and electron‐poor acetylenediamides incorporating a branched glutamic acid linker resulted in incorporation of four plasticizing moieties per attachment point on the polymer chain. A systematic study incorporating either alkyl or polyethylene glycol esters provided materials with varying degrees of plasticization, with depressed Tg values ranging from ?1 °C to 62 °C. Three interesting trends were observed. First, Tg values of PVC bearing various internal plasticizers were shown to decrease with increasing chain length of the plasticizing ester. Second, branched internal plasticizers bearing triethylene glycol chains had lower Tg values compared to those with similar length long‐chain alkyl groups. Finally, thermogravimetric analysis of these internally plasticized PVC samples revealed that these branched internal plasticizers bearing alkyl chains are more thermally stable than similarity branched plasticizers bearing triethylene glycol units. These internal tetra‐plasticizers were synthesized and attached to PVC‐azide in three simple synthetic steps. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Two novel phosphorus‐functionalized aromatic diamines, 1,1‐bis(4‐aminophenyl)‐1‐(6‐oxido‐6H‐dibenz <c,e> <1,2> oxaphosphorin‐6‐yl)ethane ( 1 ) and bis(4‐aminophenyl)‐(6‐oxido‐6H‐dibenz <c,e> <1,2> oxaphosphorin‐6‐yl)phenylmethane ( 2 ), were prepared from 9,10‐dihydro‐oxa‐10‐phosphaphenanthrene‐10‐oxide, 4‐aminoacetophenone, or 4‐aminobenzophenone in excess aniline using p‐toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate as catalyst by an efficient, one‐pot procedure. The effect of electron withdrawing/donating groups on the stabilization of the resulting carbocation seems critical for the success of the process and was discussed in detail. Based on diamines ( 1–2 ), a series of new polyimides, (5a–5d) and (6a–6d) , were prepared, respectively. Polyimides (5a–5d) are flexible and creasable. In contrast, polyimides (6a–6d) are brittle because of the structure rigidity, according to the analysis based on the NMR temperature‐dependent spectra of ( 2 ). Polyimides 5 displaying high Tg (318–392 °C), high moduli (3.39–4.49 GPa), low coefficient of thermal expansion (42–50 ppm/°C), and moderate thermal stability (Td 5 wt % at 426–439 °C), are excellent high‐Tg and flame‐retardant materials. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The bulk free‐radical polymerization of 2‐[(N,N‐dialkylamino)methyl]‐1,3‐butadiene with methyl, ethyl, and n‐propyl substituents was studied. The monomers were synthesized via substitution reactions of 2‐bromomethyl‐1,3‐butadiene with the corresponding dialkylamines. For each monomer the effects of the polymerization initiator, initiator concentration, and reaction temperature on the final polymer structure, molecular weight, and glass‐transition temperature (Tg) were examined. Using 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile as the initiator at 75 °C, the resulting polymers displayed a majority of 1,4 microstructures. As the temperature was increased to 100 and 125 °C using t‐butylperacetate and t‐butylhydroperoxide, the percentage of the 3,4 microstructure increased. Differential scanning calorimetry indicated that all of the Tg values were lower than room temperature. The Tg values were higher when the majority of the polymer structure was 1,4 and decreased as the percentage of the 3,4 microstructure increased. The Diels–Alder side products found in the polymer samples were characterized using NMR and gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry methods. The polymerization temperature and initiator concentration were identified as the key factors that influenced the Diels–Alder dimer yield. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Styrene and 4‐vinylbenzocyclobutene (vinyl‐BCB) random copolymers were prepared by free radical polymerization and studied for suitability as a dielectric material for microelectronic applications. The percentage of vinyl‐BCB in the copolymer was varied from 0 to 26 mol % to optimize the physical and mechanical properties of the cured copolymer as well as the cost. Copolymer in which 22 mol % of vinyl‐BCB was incorporated along with styrene produced a thermoset polymer which, after cure, did not show a Tg before decomposition at about 350 °C. The polymeric material has a very low dielectric constant, dissipation factor, and water uptake. The fracture toughness of the copolymer was improved with the addition of 20 wt % of a star‐shaped polystyrene‐block‐polybutadiene. Blends of the poly(styrene‐co‐vinyl‐BCB) with the thermoplastic elastomer provided material that maintained high Tg of the cured copolymer with only a slight decrease in thermal stability. The crosslinked styrenic polymer and toughened blends possess many properties that are desirable for high frequency‐high speed mobile communication applications. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A polycarbosilane having lactose‐derived structures was synthesized, and its thermal property, cytotoxicity, chemical crosslinking, and protein adsorption properties were investigated. The polycarbosilane (PSB‐Lac) was prepared by a thiol‐ene reaction between precursor poly(1‐(3‐butenyl)‐1‐methylsilacyclubane) (PSB) and heptaacetyl lactose that carried a thiol group at the anomeric position, and the successive deprotection of the acetyl groups. The lactose introduction efficiency determined by 1H NMR measurement was 75%. TGA and DSC revealed that the polymer had a 5 wt% decomposition temperature of 260 °C and glass transition temperature (Tg) of 84 °C, which indicated that PSB‐Lac was a thermally stable polymer. PSB‐Lac had no significant cytotoxicity, which was evaluated by human liver cancer cell line HepG2 cultivation on the polystyrene dishes coated with the polymer. Urethane‐crosslinked PSB‐Lac films were prepared by casting solutions of PSB‐Lac and hexamethylene diisocyanate and heating at 120 °C after evaporation of the solvent. The crosslinked PSB‐Lac showed higher adsorption of bovine serum albumin than the similarly crosslinked polycarbosilane that had a glucose structure (PSB‐Glc). © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Divinylsiloxane‐bisbenzocyclobutene (DVS‐bisBCB) polymer has very low dielectric constant and dissipation factor, good thermal stability, and high chemical resistance. The fracture toughness of the thermoset polymer is moderate due to its high crosslink density. A thermoplastic elastomer, polystyrene–polybutadiene–polystyrene triblock copolymer, was incorporated into the matrix to enhance its toughness. The cured thermoset matrix showed different morphology when the elastomer was added to the B‐staged prepolymer or when the elastomer was B‐staged with the DVS‐bisBCB monomer. Small and uniformly distributed elastomer domains were detected by transmission electron micrographs (TEM) in the former case, but TEM did not detect a separate domain in the latter case. A high percentage of the polystyrene–polybutadiene–polystyrene triblock copolymer could be incorporated into the DVS‐bisBCB thermoset matrix by B‐staging the triblock copolymer with the BCB monomer. The elastomer increased the fracture toughness of DVS‐bisBCB polymer as indicated by enhanced elongation at break and increased K1c values obtained by the modified edge‐lift‐off test. Elastomer modified DVS‐bisBCB maintained excellent electrical properties, high Tg and good thermal stability, but showed higher coefficient of linear thermal expansion values. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A route from naturally occurring myo‐inositol to hydroxyl‐bearing polyurethanes has been developed. The diol prepared from the bis‐acetalization of myo‐inositol with 1,1‐dimethoxycyclohexane was reacted with a rigid diisocyanate, 1,3‐bis(isocyanatomethyl)cyclohexane to afford the corresponding polyurethane, of which glass transition temperature (Tg) was quite high as 192 °C. The polyurethane contains side chains inherited from the acetal moieties of the diol monomer and was treated with trifluoroacetic acid to hydrolyze the acetal moieties and afford the target polyurethane functionalized with hydroxyl groups. The presence of many hydroxyl groups in the side chains, which can form hydrogen bonds with each other, resulted in a high Tg, 186 °C. In addition, the hydroxyl groups were reacted with isocyanates to achieve further side‐chain modifications. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. High‐molecular‐weight poly(phthalazinone)s with very high glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) were synthesized via a novel N–C coupling reaction. New bisphthalazinone monomers ( 7a–e ) were synthesized from 2‐(4‐chlorobenzoyl) phthalic acid in two steps. Poly(phthalazinone)s, having inherent viscosities in the range of 0.34–0.91 dL/g, were prepared by the reaction of the bis(phthalazinone) monomers with an activated aryl halide in a dipolar aprotic solvent in the presence of potassium carbonate. The poly(phthalazinone)s exhibited Tg's greater than 230 °C. polymer 8b synthesized from diphenyl biphenol and bis(4‐flurophenyl) sulfone demonstrated the highest Tg of 297 °C. Thermal stabilities of the poly(phthalazinone)s were determined by thermogravimetric analysis. All the poly(phthalazinone)s showed a similar pattern of decomposition with no weight loss below 450 °C in nitrogen. The temperatures of 5% weight loss were observed to be about 500 °C. The poly(phthalazinone)s containing 4,4′‐isopropylidenediphenol and 4,4′‐(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphenol and diphenyl ether linkage were soluble in chlorinated solvents such as chloroform. Other poly‐(phthalazinone)s were soluble in dipolar aprotic solvents such as N,N′‐dimethylacetamide. The soluble poly(phthalazinone)s can be cast as flexible films from solution. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 41: 2481–2490, 2003  相似文献

A self‐polymerizable quinoxaline monomer (A‐B) has been synthesized and polymerized via aromatic nucleophilic substitution reactions. An isomeric mixture of self‐polymerizable quinoxaline monomers—2‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)‐3‐phenyl‐6‐fluoroquinoxaline and 3‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)‐2‐phenyl‐6‐fluoroquinoxaline—was polymerized in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone (NMP) to afford high molecular weight polyphenylquinoxaline (PPQ) with intrinsic viscosities up to 1.91 dL/g and a glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of 251 °C. A series of comonomers was polymerized with A‐B to form PPQ/polysulfone (PS), PPQ/polyetherether ketone (PEEK), and PPQ/polyethersulfone (PES) copolymers. The copolymers readily obtained high intrinsic viscosities when fluorine was displaced in NMP under reflux. However, single‐electron transfer (SET) side reactions, which limit molecular weight, played a more dominant role when chlorine was displaced instead of fluorine. SET side reactions were minimized in the synthesis of PPQ/PS copolymers through mild polymerization conditions in NMP for longer polymerization times. Thus, the Tg's of PES (Tg = 220 °C), PEEK (Tg = 145 °C), and PS (Tg = 195 °C) were raised through the incorporation of quinoxaline units into the polymer. Copolymers with high intrinsic viscosities resulted in all cases, except in the case of PPQ/PEEK copolymers when 4,4′‐dichlorobenzophenone was the comonomer. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Two series of polyimides based on laterally attached p‐terphenyl and biphenyl groups were synthesized. The solubility and thermal properties were studied using DSC, thermogravimetric analysis, and the solubility test. These polymers exhibited good thermal stability and excellent solubility. The high solubility for both polymer series was attributed to the non‐coplanarity of diamine monomers and the use of fluorinated dianhydride, whereas the slightly better solubility for polymers based on p‐terphenyl was attributed to further weakening of interchain interaction of the polymers. Both polymer series exhibited glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) in the range of 244–272 °C. The Tg's of polymers containing laterally attached p‐terphenyls were higher than those of their counterparts containing biphenyls by 5–17 °C. This was attributed to the formation of an interdigitated structure that hinders the segmental movement of polymer chains. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Two flame‐retardant epoxy curing agents, 9,10‐dihydro‐9‐oxa‐10‐phosphaphenanthrene‐10‐yl‐tris(4‐hydroxyphenyl)methane (1) and 9,10‐dihydro‐9‐oxa‐10‐phosphaphenanthrene‐10‐yl‐ (4‐aminophenyl)‐bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)methane (2), were prepared by a facile, economic, one‐pot procedure. The structures of the curing agents were confirmed by IR, high‐resolution mass, 1‐D, and 2‐D NMR spectra. A reaction mechanism was proposed for the preparation, and the effect of electron withdrawing/donating effects on the stabilization of the carbocation was discussed. (1‐2) served as curing agents for diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA), dicyclopentadiene epoxy (HP‐7200), and cresol novolac epoxy (CNE). Properties such as glass transition temperature, coefficient of thermal expansion, thermal decomposition temperature, and flame retardancy of the resulting epoxy thermosets were evaluated. The resulting epoxy thermosets show high Tg, low thermal expansion, moderate thermostability, and excellent flame retardancy. The bulky biphenylene phosphinate pendant makes polymer chains difficult to rotate, explaining the high Tg and low thermal expansion characteristic. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Motivated by the growing demand for greener and sustainable polymer systems, self‐healing elastomers were prepared by emulsion polymerization of terpene and furfural‐based monomers. Both the method and the monomers were green and sustainable. The synthesized copolymers showed molecular weights between 59,080 and 84,210 Da and glass‐transition temperature (Tg) between ?25 and ?40 °C, implying rubbery properties. A set of one‐dimensional (1D) and two‐dimensional (2D) NMR spectroscopy supported the formation of the copolymer and nuclear spin–spin coupling in the copolymer. Reactivity ratios were determined by conventional linear method. A thermoreversible network was achieved for the first time by reacting the furan‐based polymer with bismaleimide (BM) as a crosslinker, via a Diels?Alder (DA) coupling reaction. The reversible nature of the polymer network was evidenced from infrared and NMR spectroscopy. The thermoreversible character of the DA crosslinked adduct was confirmed by applying retro‐DA reaction (observed in differential scanning calorimeter [DSC] analysis) and mechanical recovery was verified by repeated heating and cooling cycles. The network polymers displayed excellent self‐healing ability, triggered by heating at 130 °C for 4–12 h, when their scratched surface was screened by microscopic visualization. The healing efficiency of the crosslinked DA‐adduct was calculated as 78%, using atomic force microscopy. This work provides a green and efficient approach to prepare new green and functional materials. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2019 , 57, 738–751  相似文献

A phenylquinoxaline (PQ) AB monomer mixture was treated with monofunctional and difunctional end‐capping agents and with and without a coupling agent to afford phenylethynyl‐terminated linear PQ oligomers. The resulting PQ oligomers were soluble in common organic solvents and had intrinsic viscosities (IVs) of 0.21–0.30 dL/g. The glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of the diphenylethynyl‐end‐capped PQ oligomer on both sides increased the most, from 215 °C (before curing) to 251 °C (after curing). The PQ AB2 monomer, which acted as both a coupling agent and a monomer for the hyperbranched polymer, was treated with an AB monomer and end‐capping agents to afford phenylethynyl‐terminated hyperbranched polyphenylquinoxalines (PPQs). They were also soluble in common organic solvents, had IVs of 1.00–1.65 dL/g and Tg's of 251–253 °C, and underwent exothermic cure with maxima around 412–442 °C. The Tg's of the cured hyperbranched PPQs ranged from 258 to 261 °C, depending on the number of phenylethynyl groups on the surface. After further curing, they displayed a Tg of 316 °C in one sample and turned into a fully crosslinked network. The dynamic melt viscosities of a linear oligomer (IV = 0.21 dL/g), a hyperbranched sample (IV = 1.00 dL/g), and a linear reference PPQ (IV = 1.29 dL/g) were compared with respect to the processing temperature. The PQ oligomer and hyperbranched PPQ had low melt viscosities. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 6318–6330, 2004  相似文献

Molecular composites were prepared from several types of ionically modified, poly(p‐phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) dispersed in a poly(4‐vinylpyridine) matrix. Optical clarity tests indicated that the component polymers of the composite were miscible, at least at low concentrations of the rodlike reinforcement. In composites containing ionic PPTA, where ionic sulfonate groups were attached as side groups either to PPTA chains or to PPTA anion chains, the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) was increased by l0 °C or more, at 5 wt % reinforcement. At concentrations of 10–15 wt % of the ionic polymer, Tg values leveled off or decreased slightly. This suggested that some aggregation of the rigid‐rod molecules occurred. In composites containing ionic PPTA, where the ionic sulfonate groups were directly attached to the phenylene rings of PPTA chains, not only was Tg shifted significantly to higher temperatures, but the rubbery plateau modulus retained high values up to temperatures of 250 °C or above. Observed effects were considered to be the result of strong ionic interactions between the ionic reinforcement polymer and the polar matrix polymer. The possible effects of the counterion on Tg and the storage modulus are discussed. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 40: 1110–1117, 2002  相似文献

A novel Y‐type poly[iminocarbonyloxyethyl‐5‐methyl‐4‐{2‐thiazolylazo‐4‐(1,2,2‐tricyanovinyl)}resorcinoxyethyloxycarbonylimino‐(3,3′‐dimethoxy‐4,4′‐biphenylene)] 4 containing 5‐methyl‐4‐{5‐(1,2,2‐tricyanovinyl)‐2‐thiazolylazo}resorcinoxy groups as nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores, which constitute part of the polymer backbone, was prepared and characterized. Polyurethane 4 is soluble in common organic solvents such as acetone and N,N‐dimethylformamide. It showed a thermal stability up to 250 °C in thermogravimetric analysis thermogram and the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) obtained from differential scanning calorimetry thermogram was around 118 °C. The second harmonic generation coefficient (d33) of poled polymer films at 1560 nm fundamental wavelength was around 8.43 × 10?9 esu. The dipole alignment exhibited a thermal stability even at 12 °C higher than Tg, and there was no SHG decay below 130 °C due to the partial main‐chain character of the polymer structure, which is acceptable for NLO device applications. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Benzoxazine monomer (Ba) was blended with soluble poly(imide‐siloxane)s in various weight ratios. The soluble poly(imide‐siloxane)s with and without pendent phenolic groups were prepared from the reaction of 2,2′‐bis(3,4‐dicarboxylphenyl)hexafluoropropane dianhydride with α,ω‐bis(aminopropyl)dimethylsiloxane oligomer (PDMS; molecular weight = 5000) and 3,3′‐dihydroxybenzidine (with OH group) or 4,4′‐diaminodiphenyl ether (without OH group). The onset and maximum of the exotherm due to the ring‐opening polymerization for the pristine Ba appeared on differential scanning calorimetry curves around 200 and 240 °C, respectively. In the presence of poly(imide‐siloxane)s, the exothermic temperatures were lowered: the onset to 130–140 °C and the maximum to 210–220 °C. The exotherm due to the benzoxazine polymerization disappeared after curing at 240 °C for 1 h. Viscoelastic measurements of the cured blends containing poly(imide‐siloxane) with OH functionality showed two glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's), at a low temperature around ?55 °C and at a high temperature around 250–300 °C, displaying phase separation between PDMS and the combined phase consisting of polyimide and polybenzoxazine (PBa) components due to the formation of AB‐crosslinked polymer. For the blends containing poly(imide‐siloxane) without OH functionalities, however, in addition to the Tg due to PDMS, two Tg's were observed in high‐temperature ranges, 230–260 and 300–350 °C, indicating further phase separation between the polyimide and PBa components due to the formation of semi‐interpenetrating networks. In both cases, Tg increased with increasing poly(imide‐siloxane) content. Tensile measurements showed that the toughness of PBa was enhanced by the addition of poly(imide‐siloxane). Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the thermal stability of PBa also was enhanced by the addition of poly(imide‐siloxane). © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The calorimetric glass‐transition temperature (Tg) and transition width were measured over the full composition range for solvent–solvent mixtures of o‐terphenyl with tricresyl phosphate and with dibutyl phthalate and for polymer–solvent mixtures of polystyrene with three dialkyl phthalates. Tg shifted smoothly to higher temperatures with the addition of the component with the higher Tg for both sets of solvent–solvent mixtures. The superposition of the differential scanning calorimetry traces showed almost no composition dependence for the width of the transition region. In contrast, the composition dependence of Tg in polymer–solvent mixtures was different at high and low polymer concentrations, and two distinct Tg's were observed at intermediate compositions. These results were interpreted in terms of the local length scale and associated local composition variations affecting Tg. The possible implications of these results for the dynamics of miscible polymer blends were examined. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 42: 1155–1163, 2004  相似文献

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) does not allow for easy determination of the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of the polystyrene (PS) block in styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) block copolymers. Modulated DSC (MDSC), which deconvolutes the standard DSC signal into reversing and nonreversing signals, was used to determine the (Tg) of both the polybutadiene (PB) and PS blocks in SBS. The Tg of the PB block was sharp, at ?92 °C, but that for the PS blocks was extremely broad, from ?60 to 125 °C with a maximum at 68 °C because of blending with PB. PS blocks were found only to exist in a mixed PS–PB phase. This concurred with the results from dynamic mechanical analysis. Annealing did not allow for a segregation of the PS blocks into a pure phase, but allowed for the segregation of the mixed phase into two mixed phases, one that was PB‐rich and the other that was PS‐rich. It is concluded that three phases coexist in SBS: PB, PB‐rich, and PS‐rich phases. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 43: 276–279, 2005  相似文献

A new cardo diacid chloride, 1,1‐bis‐[4‐(4‐chlorocarboxyphenoxy)phenyl]‐4‐tert‐butylcyclohexane ( 4 ), was synthesized from 1,1‐bis‐[4‐(4‐carboxyphenoxy)phenyl]‐4‐tert‐butylcyclohexane in refluxing thionyl chloride. Subsequently, various new polyesters were prepared from 4 with various bisphenols by solution polycondensation in nitrobenzene using pyridine as a hydrogen chloride quencher at 150 °C. These polyesters were produced with inherent viscosities of 0.32–0.50 dL · g?1. Most of these polyesters exhibited excellent solubility in a variety of solvents such as N,N‐dimethylformamide, tetrahydrofuran, tetrachloroethane, dimethyl sulfoxide, N,N‐dimethylacetamide, N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone, m‐cresol, o‐chlorophenol, and chloroform. These polymers showed glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) between 144 and 197 °C. The polymer containing the adamantane group exhibited the highest Tg value. The 10% weight loss temperatures of the polyesters, measured by thermogravimetric analysis, were found to be in the range of 426–451 °C in nitrogen. These cardo polyesters exhibited higher Tg's and better solubility than bisphenol A‐based polyesters. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 39: 2951–2956, 2001  相似文献
