The effect of magnetic fields on out-of-plane orientations of liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) under simple shear flows is numerically analyzed using the Doi–Hess equation. The evolution equation for the probability distribution function of the LCP molecules is directly solved without any approximation closure. The initial director is parallel to the vorticity direction. Two cases of the magnetic fields are considered (1) the magnetic field parallel to the flow direction, and (2) the magnetic field parallel to the velocity gradient direction. For both cases a log-rolling orientation state is detected at low shear rates. However, the director is quickly aligned along the direction of magnetic fields because of the deformation of molecules. The field affects on the scalar order parameter rather than the major orientation direction for the magnetic field parallel to the flow direction. On the other hand regarding the magnetic field along the vorticity gradient direction, the effect of the magnetic field is more remarkable on the major orientation in comparison with the effect on the scalar order parameter. Also it is be found that the order parameter is increased obviously with increasing the magnetic fields. It is an efficient way to improve the performance of LCP materials.  相似文献

Shear thinning and orientation of cylindrical surfactant and block copolymer micelles was investigated by rheo-SANS (small-angle neutron scattering) experiments. Shear thinning and orientation occur for shear rates (.)gamma tau(dis)>1, where tau(dis) is the disentanglement time of the micelles. Micelles align in the flow direction with an orientational distribution that can be well described by an Onsager-type distribution function. Over nearly the whole range of concentrations and for all cylindrical micelles investigated, the shear viscosity eta follows a simple eta approximately e(-aS) behavior as a function of the orientational order parameter S with the same prefactor a.  相似文献

Attractive emulsions near the colloidal glass transition are investigated by rheometry and optical microscopy under shear. We find that (i) the apparent viscosity eta drops with increasing shear rate, then remains approximately constant in a range of shear rates, then continues to decay; (ii) the first normal stress difference N1 transitions sharply from nearly zero to negative in the region of constant shear viscosity; and (iii) correspondingly, cylindrical flocs form, align along the vorticity, and undergo a log-rolling movement. An analysis of the interplay between steric constraints, attractive forces, and composition explains this behavior, which seems universal to several other complex systems.  相似文献

Below its ordering temperature (T N = 90 K), bulk bcc Eu has a helical magnetic state with propagation vectors along the three equivalent 〈100〉 directions. In contrast, epitaxial (110)Eu films exhibit a unique magnetic ordering: the domain with a magnetic helix propagating along the in-plane [001] direction vanishes on cooling, at the expense of other domains with helices propagating along [100] and [010]. This paper is devoted to the study of the stability of the magnetic domains in an external magnetic field using neutron scattering experiments and macroscopic magnetization measurements. The helix propagating along the [001] direction can be restored by the application of an external field along this direction. On the contrary, when a magnetic field is applied along an intermediate direction, specifically [10], the domain with a helix propagating along [001] is suppressed. Both effects depend on the film thickness. They are explained if one considers that, because of the low magnetic anisotropy of Eu, a helix with a propagation vector parallel to (or close to) the applied magnetic field is energetically more favourable than cycloidal structures with unchanged propagation vectors. Finally, the amplitudes of the propagation vectors and their directions (that are modified in films compared to bulk) do not vary under magnetic field.  相似文献

It is shown that a cylindrical metallic waveguide fully filled with a magnetoactive plasma can propagate coupled ordinarily polarized bulk and extraordinarily polarized surface waves along its azimuthal direction. Interaction between these waves is studied in the case when an external magnetic field has axial and azimuthal components. For the case of a regular profile, a practically convenient analytical expression for a correction to the eigenfrequency of the waves that is due to the external azimuthal magnetic field is derived.  相似文献

An externally applied magnetic field was used to induce increased photocarrier transport along the high mobility channel in GaAs/AlGaAs modulation-doped heterostructures (MDH). The terahertz (THz) emission from GaAs/AlGaAs MDH increases with increasing magnetic field, applied parallel to the heterojunction. The THz emission enhancement factors due to the magnetic field in MDH are higher than in undoped GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction and in bulk SI-GaAs. This demonstrates that properly utilizing the high-mobility channel for carrier transport promises to be a viable design consideration for efficient THz photoconductive antenna (PCA) devices. Moreover, it was observed that for MDH, as well as for an undoped GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction, the enhancement for one magnetic field direction is greater than the enhancement for the opposite direction. This is in contrast to the symmetric enhancement with magnetic field direction observed in a bulk SI-GaAs. An analysis of photocarrier trajectories under an external magnetic field supports the explanation that the enhancement asymmetry with magnetic field direction in MDH is due to the cycloid motion of electrons as affected by the GaAs/AlGaAs interface.  相似文献

As dense granular materials are sheared, a shear band and an anisotropic force network form. The approach to steady-state behavior depends on the history of the packing and the existing force and contact network. We present experiments on shearing of dense granular matter in a 2D Couette geometry in which we probe the history and evolution of shear bands by measuring particle trajectories and stresses during transients. We find that when shearing is stopped and restarted in the same direction, steady-state behavior is immediately reached, in agreement with the typical assumption that the system is quasistatic. Although some relaxation of the force network is observed when shearing is stopped, quasistatic behavior is maintained because the contact network remains essentially unchanged. When the direction of shear is reversed, a transient occurs in which stresses initially decrease, changes in the force network reach further into the bulk, and particles far from the wheel become more mobile. This occurs because the force network is fragile to changes transverse to the force network established under previous shear; particles must rearrange before becoming jammed again, thereby providing resistance to shear in the reversed direction. The strong force network is re-established after displacing the shearing surface , where d is the mean grain diameter. Steady-state velocity profiles are reached after a shear of . Particles immediately outside of the shear band move on average less than 1 diameter before becoming jammed again. We present nonlinear properties of the low-frequency nonlinear electrostatic waves in a nonuniform bounded magneto-plasma with the equilibrium density and parallel ion velocity gradients along the radial direction. The existence of electrostatic global vortices in a cylindrical magnetoplasma is established. The present results should help to understand the properties of coherent vortical structures in the presence of a magnetic field-aligned ion flow with a radial ion velocity gradient in laboratory magnetoplasmas that are bounded and nonuniform.  相似文献

We find a pyroelectric current along the 〈110〉 direction of stoichiometric Li2B4O7 so that the pyroelectric coefficient is nonzero but roughly 10−3 smaller than along the 〈001〉 direction of spontaneous polarization. Abrupt decreases in the pyroelectric coefficient along the 〈110〉 direction can be correlated with anomalies in the elastic stiffness contributing to concept that the pyroelectric coefficient is not simply a vector but has qualities of a tensor, as expected. The time dependent surface photovoltaic charging suggests that an inverse piezoelectric effect occurs at the (110) surface but not the (100) surface. Both effects along the 〈110〉 direction or at the (110) surface are distinct the conventional as a bulk pyroelectric effect.  相似文献

本文建立了金属熔体近壁面流动剪切模型, 并分析了流动剪切对金属凝固的影响. 针对A356合金计算结果表明:层流流动的熔体内部剪应力随垂直斜板表面距离的增大而减小, 随着流动长度的增加先急剧下降之后趋于稳定; 紊流流动的熔体所受的剪应力随着垂直倾斜板表面距离的增大先急剧下降之后趋于稳定, 随着流动长度的增加而不断增大; 斜板倾角越大, 斜板上相同位置的熔体层受到的剪应力越大; 熔体垂直斜板表面距离越小, 柱状晶所承受的弯曲应力越大; 斜角越大, 斜板上相同位置的柱状晶的弯曲应力越大; 随着熔体在倾斜板表面流动长度的增加, 在层流阶段, 倾斜板表面柱状晶根部所受的弯曲应力先急剧下降之后趋于平稳, 而在紊流阶段, 弯曲应力是缓慢增加的; 理论分析表明柱状晶在熔体近壁面流动过程受到的最大弯曲应力低于αup -Al晶粒的屈服强度, 所以斜板上熔体流动产生的弯曲力不能将柱状晶折断, 只能将晶粒冲刷游离到熔体中使晶粒增殖, 与实验结果相符合. 所以本模型可以很好地解释熔体近壁面流动过程中的剪切本构关系以及剪应力对凝固组织的影响.  相似文献

The adsorption of C2H4 on the FeNi(1 1 1) alloy surface has been studied by ASED-MO tight binding calculations. The C2H4 molecule presents its most stable geometry with the CC bond axis parallel to the surface along the [1, −1, 0] direction, bonded on top Fe atom and bonded along a Fe-Fe bridge site. As a consequence, the strength of the local Fe-Fe bond decreases between 37 and 62% of its original bulk value. This bond weakening is mainly due to the new C-Fe interactions however no Fe3C carbide formation is evidenced on surface. The Fe-Ni and Ni-Ni superficial bonds are only slightly modified.  相似文献

The effect of array geometry on the steering performance of ultrasound phased arrays is examined theoretically, in order to maximize array performance under the given anatomical constraints. This paper evaluates the performance of arrays with spherical and cylindrical geometry, determined by using computer simulations of the pressure fields produced at various extremes of steering. The spherical segment arrays were truncated for insertion into the rectum, and contained either annular or linear elements. The cylindrical arrays were either flat or had a variable curvature applied along their length. Fields were computed by dividing the array elements into many point sources. The effectiveness of an array configuration when steered to a particular focal location was assessed by defining a parameter, G, as the ratio of the intensity at the desired focus to the maximum intensity of any unwanted lobes. The performance of truncated spherical arrays with annular elements was evaluated for focal steering along the array axis (in depth, in the z direction). When steered 15 mm toward the source, these truncated spherical annular arrays exhibited excellent performance, with G>5.7 for arrays containing more than 10 elements. Similarly, the spherical arrays with linear elements performed well when steered along the array axis to the same degree, with G>7 (for element widths up to 3 lambda), though many more array elements were required. However, when these arrays were steered 15 mm laterally, along the length of the prostate (the y direction), the value for G fell below 1 for element widths greater than about 1.6 lambda. It was found that the cylindrical arrays performed much better for y-direction steering (G>4, for 60 mm arrays with an element width of 1.75 lambda), but their performance was poorer when steered in the z direction (G approximately 4 for an element width of 1.5 lambda). In order to find a compromise between these extremes, a curved cylindrical array was examined, which was a cylindrical array with additional curvature along its length. These curved cylindrical arrays yielded performance between that of spherical linear arrays and cylindrical arrays, with better steering along the y direction than the spherical arrays and better z-direction steering than the cylindrical arrays.  相似文献

Fluorescence emission from three tertiary amine local anesthetics, dibucaine (D), tetracaine (T), and procaine (P) was investigated in the membrane-mimetic environment of AOT/isooctane reverse micelles and water-ethanol mixtures. At room temperature all three show broad UV absorption bands and large Stokes' shifts in emission from aqueous medium. In reverse micelles the emission bands are blue-shifted, with the magnitude of this shift decreasing continuously as the waterto-surfactant molar ratio (w0) of the micelles is increased. The emission intensity of D is much stronger in water and in the interior of micelles than in ethanol, whereas for T and P the emission in water is much weaker than in ethanol and in micelles. Whereas the behavior in micelles is the result of the increased hydrophobicity with respect to bulk water in their interior, that in waterethanol mixtures may be explained on the basis of state reversal of the excited electronic levels of D with increasing hydrogen bonding capability of the solvent mixture. The steady-state anisotropy for both T and P is unusually high in bulk water (0.27) and increases with increasing w0 in micelles. However, the rotational correlation time of the anesthetics, as calculated using Perrin's equation, decreases with increasing w0, as expected from physical considerations relating the size of the water pool to the ease of rotational relaxation of probe molecules inside micelles. Together, these results point to a marked difference in emission properties between D on one hand and T and P on the other, arising from differences in electronic characters of their primary emitting chromophores—quinoline for D, para amino benzoate for T and P.  相似文献

By neutron diffraction it was shown that nanostructured Se confined within a porous glass matrix exists in a crystalline as well as in an amorphous state. The spontaneous crystallization of crystalline Se from confined amorphous phase was observed. The root-mean-square amplitudes of the atomic motions in the bulk as well as in confinement are found to be essentially different in a basal plane and in the perpendicular direction along the hexagonal axis. The atomic motions in the confined Se differ from the atomic motions in the bulk at low temperatures. The results shows an unusual “freezing" of the atomic motion along the chains, while the atomic motions in the perpendicular plane still keep. This “freezing" is accompanied by the deformation of nanoparticles and the appearance of inner stresses. This effect is attributed to the interaction of confined nanoparticle with the cavity walls.  相似文献

A sort of tubular ultrasonic radiator used in ultrasonic liquid processing is studied. The frequency equation of the tubular radiator is derived, and its radiated sound field in cylindrical reactor is calculated using finite element method and recorded by means of aluminum foil erosion. The results indicate that sound field of tubular ultrasonic radiator in cylindrical reactor appears standing waves along both its radial direction and axial direction, and amplitudes of standing waves decrease gradually along its radial direction, and the numbers of standing waves along its axial direction are equal to the axial wave numbers of tubular radiator. 将球形颗粒倒入内径较窄的管状容器时,管壁的曲率会对颗粒的堆积结构产生影响,存在壁效应. 实验表明通过连续的竖直方向的振动,壁效应可以被强化,颗粒可以经由对流由无序排列转变为稳定的同轴筒形“壳层”结构. 每一壳层内,颗粒是二维的六角密堆积, 在这一转变过程中,颗粒堆积率的径向分布由初始的衰减振荡转变为等幅振荡. 分析了堆积率的不均匀性及空气在对流中的作用,以及形成“壳层”结构的动力学过程,对“壳层”结构的稳定性亦进行了讨论. 关键词: 颗粒物质 对流 有序化 毛细  相似文献

The interaction between a general magnetic source and a long type-II superconducting cylinder in the Meissner or mixed state is studied within the London theory. We first study the Meissner state and solve the Maxwell–London equations when the source is a magnetic monopole located at an arbitrary position. Then the field and supercurrent for a more complicated magnetic charge distribution can be obtained by superposition. A magnetic point dipole with arbitrary direction is studied in detail. It turns out that the levitation force on the dipole contains in general an angular as well as a radial component. By integration we obtain the field and supercurrent when the source is a two-dimensional monopole (a magnetically charged long thread along the axial direction), from which the results for a two-dimensional point dipole easily follow. In the latter case the levitation force points in the radial direction regardless of the orientation of the dipole. The case for a current carrying long straight wire parallel to the cylindrical axis is solved separately. The limit of ideal Meissner state is discussed in most cases. The case of mixed state is discussed briefly. It turns out that vortex lines along the axial direction and vortex rings concentric with the cylinder have no effect outside the cylinder and the levitation forces remain the same as in the case of the Meissner state.  相似文献

The dependence of the bulk signal intensity from a CRAZED NMR pulse sequence on magnetic field gradient strength and direction as a method to probe the geometry of porous materials is investigated. In this article, we report on the reconstruction of three-dimensional media consisting of a void phase and an NMR-observable liquid phase using the bulk intensity of the distant dipolar field. The correlation gradient strength and direction provide the spatial encoding of the material geometry. An integral equation for the total signal intensity is then solved numerically by a simulated annealing algorithm to recover the indicator function of the fluid phase. Results show that cylindrical and spherical structures smaller than the volume contributing to the NMR signal can be resolved using three values of the correlation distance and three orthogonal gradient directions. This is done by minimizing a cost function which measures the distance between the bulk signal dependence on gradient parameters for the simulated configuration and the signal dependence for the target configuration. The algorithm can reconstruct and differentiate their spherical and cylindrical phase-inverted equivalents. It can also differentiate horizontal from vertical cylinders, demonstrating the potential for assessing structural anisotropy and other coarse geometric quantifiers in a porous material.  相似文献

采用粒子模拟方法,研究沿背景磁场方向传播的低频Alfvén波对磁化等离子体加热的物理过程.模拟结果表明:离子在垂直和平行于背景磁场的方向都得到明显的加热,在非共振加热阶段,垂直方向比平行方向的加热效果更加显著,形成温度各向异性;在随机加热阶段,垂直和平行方向的温度最终达到饱和且趋于一致.加热过程中,离子所获得动力学温度的最大值由外加磁场能量密度与等离子体密度的比值决定,与Alfvén波的频率及振幅无关;离子在平行于背景磁场方向上被加速,并最终获得相当于Alfvén波相速度大小的流速.  相似文献
