The self‐assembly of a new perylene bisimide (PBI) organogelator with 1,7‐dimethoxy substituents in the bay position affords non‐fluorescent H‐aggregates at high cooling rates and fluorescent J‐aggregates at low cooling rates. Under properly adjusted conditions, the kinetically trapped “off‐pathway” H‐aggregates are transformed into the thermodynamically favored J‐aggregates, a process that can be accelerated by the addition of J‐aggregate seeds. Spectroscopic studies revealed a subtle interplay of π–π interactions and intra‐ and intermolecular hydrogen bonding for monomeric, H‐, and J‐aggregated PBIs. Multiple polymerization cycles initiated from the seed termini demonstrate the living character of this chain‐growth supramolecular polymerization process.  相似文献

Understanding the roles of various parameters in orchestrating the preferential chiral molecular organization in supramolecular self‐assembly processes is of great significance in designing novel molecular functional systems. Cyclic dipeptide (CDP) chiral auxiliary‐functionalized naphthalenediimides (NCDPs 1 – 6 ) have been prepared and their chiral self‐assembly properties have been investigated. Detailed photophysical and circular dichroism (CD) studies have unveiled the crucial role of the solvent in the chiral aggregation of these NCDPs. NCDPs 1 – 3 form supramolecular helical assemblies and exhibit remarkable chiroptical switching behaviour (M‐ to P‐type) depending on the solvent composition of HFIP and DMSO. The strong influence of solvent composition on the supramolecular chirality of NCDPs has been further corroborated by concentration and solid‐state thin‐film CD studies. The chiroptical switching between supramolecular aggregates of opposite helicity (M and P) has been found to be reversible, and can be achieved through cycles of solvent removal and redissolution in solvent mixtures of specific composition. The control molecular systems (NCDPs 4 – 6 ), with an achiral or D ‐isomer second amino acid in the CDP auxiliary, did not show chiral aggregation properties. The substantial roles of hydrogen bonding and π–π interactions in the assembly of the NCDPs have been validated through nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), photophysical, and computational studies. Quantum chemical calculations at the ab initio, semiempirical, and density functional theory levels have been performed on model systems to understand the stabilities of the right (P‐) and left (M‐) handed helical supramolecular assemblies and the nature of the intermolecular interactions. This study emphasizes the role of CDP chiral auxiliaries on the solvent‐induced helical assembly and reversible chiroptical switching of naphthalenediimides.  相似文献

Solvent-driven aggregation of a series of porphyrin derivatives was studied by UV/Vis and circular dichroism spectroscopy. The porphyrins are characterised by the presence in the meso positions of steroidal moieties further conjugated with glucosyl groups. The presence of these groups makes the investigated macrocycles amphiphilic and soluble in aqueous solvent, namely, dimethyl acetamide/water. Aggregation of the macrocycles is triggered by a change in bulk solvent composition leading to formation of large architectures that express supramolecular chirality, steered by the presence of the stereogenic centres on the periphery of the macrocycles. The aggregation behaviour and chiroptical features of the aggregates are strongly dependent on the number of moieties decorating the periphery of the porphyrin framework. In particular, experimental evidence indicates that the structure of the steroid linker dictates the overall chirality of the supramolecular architectures. Moreover, the porphyrin concentration strongly affects the aggregation mechanism and the CD intensities of the spectra. Notably, AFM investigations reveal strong differences in aggregate morphology that are dependent on the nature of the appended functional groups, and closely in line with the changes in aggregation mechanism. The suprastructures formed at lower concentration show a network of long fibrous structures spanning over tens of micrometres, whereas the aggregates formed at higher concentration have smaller rod-shaped structures that can be recognised as the result of coalescence of smaller globular structures. The fully steroid substituted derivative forms globular structures over the whole concentration range explored. Finally, a rationale for the aggregation phenomena was given by semiempirical calculations at the PM6 level.  相似文献

Hierarchical supramolecular chiral liquid‐crystalline (LC) polymer assemblies are challenging to construct in situ in a controlled manner. Now, polymerization‐induced chiral self‐assembly (PICSA) is reported. Hierarchical supramolecular chiral azobenzene‐containing block copolymer (Azo‐BCP) assemblies were constructed with π–π stacking interactions occurring in the layered structure of Azo smectic phases. The evolution of chirality from terminal alkyl chain to Azo mesogen building blocks and further induction of supramolecular chirality in LC BCP assemblies during PICSA is achieved. Morphologies such as spheres, worms, helical fibers, lamellae, and vesicles were observed. The morphological transition had a crucial effect on the chiral expression of Azo‐BCP assemblies. The supramolecular chirality of Azo‐BCP assemblies destroyed by 365 nm UV irradiation can be recovered by heating–cooling treatment; this dynamic reversible achiral–chiral switching can be repeated at least five times.  相似文献

The synthesis and self-assembling features of twistacene 1 are reported. The supramolecular polymerization of 1 displays a consecutive pathway to afford slipped ( AggI ) and rotationally displaced ( AggII ) aggregates conditioned by the formation of intramolecularly H-bonded pseudocycles. In methylcyclohexane, both AggI and AggII are highly stable and the interconversion of the kinetically controlled AggI into the thermodynamically controlled AggII takes several weeks to occur. The utilization of toluene as solvent changes the energetic level for both aggregates and favors a faster conversion of AggI into AggII within a period of minutes. This conversion can be accelerated by the addition of seeds. Furthermore, concentration dependent kinetic studies demonstrate the consecutive character of the supramolecular polymerization of 1 .  相似文献

A new dicarbocyanine dye bearing branched, chiral N-alkyl substituents was synthesized and its ability to form helical aggregates on peptide nucleic acid (PNA) double-helical templates was studied. The dye aggregates less effectively than an analogous dye bearing linear, achiral substituents, presumably due to steric problems with packing the branched substituents compared with the linear substituents. When the PNA duplex has a left-handed helicity, addition of the achiral dye leads to formation of a left-handed dye aggregate. However, when the chiral dye aggregates in the presence of this duplex, a right-handed structure is formed, suggesting that the dye alters the helicity of the underlying template. When a racemic PNA duplex (i.e., equal amounts of right- and left-handed helices) is used, no chirality is observed for the dye aggregate formed by the achiral dye but a right-handed helical aggregate is once again formed by the chiral dye. These results indicate that chirality is transferred from the dye to the PNA, as opposed to other examples of polymer-templated dye aggregation where chirality is transferred from the template to the dye.  相似文献

Beyond phenomenon, self-assembly of synthetic molecules, is now becoming an essential tool to design supramolecular materials not only in the thermodynamically stable state but also in kinetically trapped states. However, an approach to design complex self-assembly processes comprising different types of self-assembled states remains elusive. Herein, an example of such systems is demonstrated based on a unique supramolecular polymer mediated by supermacrocyclization of hydrogen-bonding π-conjugated molecules. By adding an aromatic solvent into nonpolar solutions of the monomer, spontaneous nucleation triggered by supermacrocyclization was suppressed so that isothermal supramolecular polymerization could be achieved from kinetically formed topological variants and amorphous agglomerates to afford helicoidal structures hitherto obtainable only with very slow cooling of a hot solution. By increasing the proportion of aromatic solvent further, another self-assembly path was found, based on competing extended hydrogen-bonded motifs affording crystalline nanowires.  相似文献

We report the unique synthesis of chiral supramolecular tri- and penta-BCPs with controllable chirality using kinetically adjusted seeded supramolecular copolymerization in THF and DMSO (99 : 1, v/v). Tetraphenylethylene (d - and l -TPE) derivatives bearing d - and l -alanine side chains formed thermodynamically favored chiral products via a kinetically trapped in monomeric state with a long lag phase. In contrast, achiral TPE-G containing glycine moieties did not form a supramolecular polymer owing to the energy barrier in its kinetically trapped state. We show that the copolymerization of the metastable states of TPE-G not only enables the generation of supramolecular BCPs by the seeded living growth method, but also transfers chirality at the seed ends. This research demonstrates the generation of chiral supramolecular tri- and penta-BCPs with B-A-B, A-B-A-B-A, and C-B-A-B-C block patterns accompanying chirality transfer via seeded living polymerization.  相似文献

Manipulating the self-assembly pathway is essentially important in the supramolecular synthesis of organic nano- and microarchitectures. Herein, we design a series of photoisomerizable chiral molecules, and realize precise control over pathway complexity with external light stimuli. The hidden single-handed microcoils, rather than the straight microribbons through spontaneous assembly, are obtained through a kinetically controlled pathway. The competition between molecular interactions in metastable photostationary intermediates gives rise to a variety of molecular packing and thereby the possibility of chirality transfer from molecules to supramolecular assemblies.  相似文献

A DNA‐based covalent versus a non‐covalent approach is demonstrated to control the optical, chirooptical and higher order structures of Nile red ( Nr ) aggregation. Dynamic light scattering and TEM studies revealed that in aqueous media Nr ‐modified 2′‐deoxyuridine aggregates through the co‐operative effect of various non‐covalent interactions including the hydrogen bonding ability of the nucleoside and sugar moieties and the π‐stacking tendency of the highly hydrophobic dye. This results in the formation of optically active nanovesicles. A left‐handed helically twisted H‐type packing of the dye is observed in the bilayer of the vesicle as evidenced from the optical and chirooptical studies. On the other hand, a left‐handed helically twisted J‐type packing in vesicles was obtained from a non‐polar solvent (toluene). Even though the primary stacking interaction of the dye aggregates transformed from H→J while going from aqueous to non‐polar media, the induced supramolecular chirality of the aggregates remained the same (left‐handed). Circular dichroism studies of DNA that contained several synthetically incorporated and covalently attached Nr ‐modified nucleosides revealed the formation of helically stacked H‐aggregates of Nr but—in comparison to the noncovalent aggregates—an inversed chirality (right‐handed). This self‐assembly propensity difference can, in principle, be applied to other hydrophobic dyes and chromophores and thus open a DNA‐based approach to modulate the primary stacking interactions and supramolecular chirality of dye aggregates.  相似文献

A new method is described through which the macroscopic chirality of interfacial molecular assemblies of an achiral porphyrin can be mechanically controlled using an original yet efficient Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique. By using the unilateral compression geometry, we find that the assemblies deposited from the mirror regions of the LB trough display mirror macroscopic chirality. It is indicated that vortex-like flows could be generated during compression, and that it is the direction of this compression-generated vortex-like flow that determine the macroscopic chirality of the formed assemblies. Moreover, the standard sample-fabrication method with bilateral compression geometry is reformed, and we find that the samples formulated around the left-hand- and right-hand-side Langmuir barriers display opposite macroscopic chiralities. The results suggest that mechanically controlled supramolecular chirogenesis could be efficiently realized through such an LB technique. The investigation establishes a new forum for further investigation of the mechanically induced preferred supramolecular chirality in terms of interfacial organization, and provides the old LB technique with new opportunities for controlling the macroscopic chirality of a supramolecular system that is wholly composed of achiral units.  相似文献

J-aggregates are highly desired dye aggregates but so far there has been no general concept how to accomplish the required slip-stacked packing arrangement for dipolar merocyanine (MC) dyes whose aggregation commonly affords one-dimensional aggregates composed of antiparallel, co-facially stacked MCs with H-type coupling. Herein we describe a strategy for MC J-aggregates based on our results for an amphiphilic MC dye bearing alkyl and oligo(ethylene glycol) side chains. In an aqueous solvent mixture, we observe the formation of two supramolecular polymorphs for this MC dye, a metastable off-pathway nanoparticle showing H-type coupling and a thermodynamically favored nanosheet showing J-type coupling. Detailed studies concerning the self-assembly mechanism by UV-Vis spectroscopy and the packing structure by atomic force microscopy and wide-angle X-ray scattering show how the packing arrangement of such amphiphilic MC dyes can afford slip-stacked two-dimensional nanosheets whose macrodipole is compensated by the formation of a bilayer structure. As an additional feature we demonstrate how the size of the nanosheets can be controlled by seeded living supramolecular polymerization.  相似文献

Development of functional materials capable of exhibiting chirality tunable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is currently in high demand for potential technological applications. Herein we demonstrate the formation of both left- and right-handed fluorescent helical superstructures from each enantiomer of a chiral tetraphenylethylene derivative through judicious choice of the solution processing conditions. Interestingly, both the aggregation induced emission active enantiomers exhibit handedness inversion of their supramolecular helical assemblies just by varying the solution polarity without any change in their molecular chirality. The resulting helical supramolecular aggregates from each enantiomer are capable of emitting circularly polarized light, thus enabling both right- and left-handed CPL from a single chiral material. The left- and right-handed supramolecular helical aggregates in the dried films have been characterized using spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy techniques. These new chiral aggregation induced emission compounds could find applications in devices where CPL of opposite handedness is required from the same material and would facilitate our understanding of the formation of helical assemblies with switchable supramolecular chirality.

The formation of both left- and right-handed helical superstructures with circularly polarized luminescence has been achieved in a chiral tetraphenylethylene derivative just by varying the solution polarity without any change in molecular chirality.  相似文献

Here we report on how metastable supramolecular gels can be formed through seeded self‐assembly of multicomponent gelators. Hydrazone‐based gelators decorated with non‐ionic and anionic groups are formed in situ from hydrazide and aldehyde building blocks, and lead through multiple self‐sorting processes to the formation of heterogeneous gels approaching thermodynamic equilibrium. Interestingly, the addition of seeds composing of oligomers of gelators bypasses the self‐sorting processes and accelerates the self‐assembly along a kinetically favored pathway, resulting in homogeneous gels of which the network morphologies and gel stiffness are markedly different from the thermodynamically more stable gel products. Importantly, over time, these metastable homogeneous gel networks are capable of converting into the thermodynamically more stable state. This seeding‐driven formation of out‐of‐equilibrium supramolecular structures is expected to serve as a simple approach towards functional materials with pathway‐dependent properties.  相似文献

A chiral regioregular polythiophene (PT), poly[3-[4-((R)-4-ethyl-2-oxazolin-2-yl)phenyl]thiophene] (poly-1), forms chiral aggregates which exhibit a unique induced circular dichroism (ICD) in the pi-pi transition region derived from the supramolecular chirality in the presence of various poor solvents or metal salts in chloroform. We report here that the chirality of such supramolecular aggregates can be switched ("on" and "off") through electron transfer. We have found that upon the addition of copper(II) trifluoromethanesulfonate [Cu(OTf)(2)] to the chiral aggregates of poly-1 in a chloroform-acetonitrile mixture, the ICD disappears because of the oxidative doping of the poly-1 main chain, while a further addition of amines such as triethylenetetramine (TETA) induces undoping of the poly-1 which results in the reappearance of the ICDs. Therefore, the supramolecular chirality of the poly-1 assemblies was reversibly controlled by the addition or removal of an electron from the poly-1 main chain. This may be the first example of a reversible supramolecular chirality switch on chiral PT aggregates. We investigated the mechanism of the chirality switch through the doping and undoping process on the polymer main chain by means of absorption and CD spectroscopies, ESR, cyclic voltammetry, X-ray diffraction, and AFM measurements.  相似文献

A water-soluble amphiphilic poly(phenylacetylene) bearing the bulky aza-18-crown-6-ether pendants forms a one-handed helix induced by l- or d-amino acids and chiral amino alcohols through specific host-guest interactions in water. We now report that such an induced helical poly(phenylacetylene) with a controlled helix sense can selectively trap an achiral benzoxazole cyanine dye among various structurally similar cyanine dyes within its hydrophobic helical cavity inside the polymer in acidic water, resulting in the formation of supramolecular helical aggregates, which exhibit an induced circular dichroism (ICD) in the cyanine dye chromophore region. The supramolecular chirality induced in the cyanine aggregates could be further memorized when the template helical polymer lost its optical activity and further inverted into the opposite helicity. Thereafter, thermal racemization of the helical aggregates slowly took place.  相似文献

A series of cinnamoyl-terminated bolaamphiphiles were synthesized and their assemblies at the air/water interface were investigated. It was found that the assembly behaviour depended on the substituted groups on the cinnamoyl unit. The bolaamphiphile with 4-hydroxycinnamoyl head groups (HCDA) was found to assemble into a supramolecular nanotube, while the others formed only layer-structured films. Moreover, the nanotube formed from HCDA showed supramolecular chirality due to the symmetry breaking. Both the layered films and the nanotubes showed photochemical dimerization upon UV irradiation, which were studied from the UV-Vis, FT-IR spectral and MALDI-TOF MS analysis. Interestingly, such dimerization behavior of the cinnamoyl group could be used to stabilize the nanotube of HCDAvia photochemical sewing. During such a process both the supramolecular chirality and the tubular shapes were kept. Remarkably, such a photochemical sewed chiral nanotube could further induce the chirality of an achiral porphyrin derivative assembled on it, and produced the induced chirality without using any chiral molecules.  相似文献

Supramolecular peptide assemblies have been widely used for the development of biomedical, catalytical, and optical materials with chiral nanostructures in view of the intrinsic chirality of peptides. However, the assembly pathway and chiral transformation behavior of various peptides remain largely elusive especially for the transient assemblies under out-of-equilibrium conditions. Herein, the N-fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl-protected phenylalanine-tyrosine dipeptide (Fmoc-FY) was used as a peptide assembly platform, which showed that the assembly proceeds multistep evolution. The original spheres caused by liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) can nucleate and elongate into the formation of right-handed helices which were metastable and easily converted into microribbons. Interestingly, a bipyridine derivative can be introduced to effectively control the assembly pathway and induce the formation of thermodynamically stable right-handed or left-handed helices at different stoichiometric ratios. In addition, the chiral assembly can also be regulated by ultrasound or enzyme catalysis. This minimalistic system not only broadens the nucleation-elongation mechanisms of protein aggregates but also promotes the controllable design and development of chiral biomaterials.  相似文献

The newly developed oligophenylenevinylene (OPV)‐based fluorescent (FL) chiral chemosensor (OPV‐Me) for the representative enantiomeric guest, 1,2‐cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid (1,2‐CHDA: RR ‐ and SS ‐form) showed the high chiral discrimination ability, resulting in the different aggregation modes of OPV‐Me self‐assembly: RR ‐CHDA directed the fibrous supramolecular aggregate, whereas SS ‐CHDA directed the finite aggregate. The consequent FL intensity toward RR ‐CHDA was up to 30 times larger than that toward SS ‐CHDA. Accordingly, highly enantioselective recognition was achieved. Application to the chirality sensing was also possible: OPV‐Me exhibited a linear relationship between the FL intensity and the enantiomeric excess through the morphological development of stereocomplex aggregates. These results clearly show that the chiral recognition ability is manifested by the amplification cascade of the chirality difference through self‐assembly.  相似文献
