Self-assembly is the fundamental principle, which can occur spontaneously in nature. Through billions of years of evolution, nature has learned what is optimal. The optimized biological solution provides some inspiration for scientists and engineers. In the past decade, under the multi-disciplinary collaboration, bio-inspired special wetting surfaces have attracted much attention for both fundamental research and practical applications. In this review, we focus on recent research progress in bio-inspired special wetting surfaces via self-assembly, such as low adhesive superhydrophobic surfaces, high adhesive superhydrophobic surfaces, superamphiphobic surfaces, and stimuli-responsive surfaces. The challenges and perspectives of this research field in the future are also briefly addressed.  相似文献

Nowadays, most superhydrophobic surfaces will lose their superhydrophobic performance once they encounter oil, and adhesive strength of superhydrophobic coating is low. Therefore, the superhydrophobic coating with good oleophobicity and high adhesive strength is popular with people. A superhydrophobic and oleophobic coating is characteristic of antifouling and self-cleaning, due to the appearance of special structures, such as overhang and re-entrant. In this work, flower-like zinc oxide (ZnO) particles free of fluorine and fluorine-containing epoxy were used to establish the coating with a similar re-entrant structure. Flower-like ZnO particles were prepared by a chemical precipitation method, and the water contact angle of flower-like ZnO is up to 149 ± 1°. For the coating, flower-like ZnO particles were almost covered by fluorine-containing epoxy synthesized through click reaction so that the adhesive strength between the coating and the matrix is high, superior to some coatings in the references. The surfaces made of flower-like ZnO and fluorinated epoxy possess superhydrophobic and oleophobic properties. The contact angle of the coating for water, diiodomethane, glycerol, and glycol is 154 ± 0.7°, 138 ± 0.6°, 156 ± 0.7°, and 150 ± 0.7°, respectively. After withstanding 70 cycles under the pressure of 1 kPa, the coating is still superhydrophobic. Also, the coating possesses a good self-cleaning and anti-icing property.  相似文献

This paper proposes a simple, precise, and controllable method to fabricate wettability-gradient surfaces. Combining electrochemical etching and lithography, different micro/nanostructures can be obtained by adjusting the etching time. After being modified by low energy substances, low adhesive superhydrophobic and sticky hydrophobic regions can be obtained on one surface. Based on the obtained adhesion gradient, droplets of different volumes can be controlled to roll off at dissimilar tilted angles via designing sticky hydrophobic tracks with different widths. Directional transportation of water droplets on curve tracks is also realized based on the anisotropic sliding angles parallel and perpendicular to the tracks.  相似文献

The article reports on a very simple method to fabricate superhydrophobic surfaces with Cu-Zn alloy via changing the local oxygen concentration and formation of oxygen difference cell, which can be readily realized by covering or contacting the Cu-Zn alloy surface with a glass slide. This superhydrophobic film comes from the formation of a flower-like hierarchical structure due to the accelerated alloy etching. In contrast, the white film grown in the un-covered area showed a much lower hydrophobicity due to its different morphology. These superhydrophobic surfaces or superhydrophobic-hydrophobic surfaces are expected to find applications in making self-cleaning alloy surface, in metal anticorrosion, and in biomineralization, etc.  相似文献

A typical superhydrophobic (ultrahydrophobic) surface can repel water droplets from wetting itself, and the contact angle of a water droplet resting on a superhydrophobic surface is greater than 150°, which means extremely low wettability is achievable on superhydrophobic surfaces. Many superhydrophobic surfaces (both manmade and natural) normally exhibit micro- or nanosized roughness as well as hierarchical structure, which somehow can influence the surface's water repellence. As the research into superhydrophobic surfaces goes deeper and wider, it is becoming more important to both academic fields and industrial applications. In this work, the most recent progress in preparing manmade superhydrophobic surfaces through a variety of methodologies, particularly within the past several years, and the fundamental theories of wetting phenomena related to superhydrophobic surfaces are reviewed. We also discuss the perspective of natural superhydrophobic surfaces utilized as mimicking models. The discussion focuses on how the superhydrophobic property is promoted on solid surfaces and emphasizes the effect of surface roughness and structure in particular. This review aims to enable researchers to perceive the inner principles of wetting phenomena and employ suitable methods for creation and modification of superhydrophobic surfaces.  相似文献

Cu-coated stainless steel surfaces containing micro- and nanoscale binary structures with different surface roughness were successfully fabricated by means of a facile one-step electroless plating technology. The resulting surfaces were modified by the low free energy material HFTHTMS (HFTHTMS = (heptadecafluoro-1,1,2,2-tetrahydrodecyl) trimethoxysilane). The experimental results of wettability exhibit that such unmodified surfaces have a strong adhesive force to water droplets, and their contact angles increase with increasing surface roughness, whereas the modified surfaces by HFTHTMS show the superhydrophobic characteristic with contact angles higher than 150° and sliding angles lower than 5°.  相似文献

The mechanics of fibrillar adhesive surfaces of biological systems such as a Lotus leaf and a gecko are widely studied due to their unique surface properties. The Lotus leaf is a model for superhydrophobic surfaces, self-cleaning properties, and low adhesion. Gecko feet have high adhesion due to the high micro/nanofibrillar hierarchical structures. A nanostructured surface may exhibit low adhesion or high adhesion depending upon fibrillar density, and it presents the possibility of realizing eco-friendly surface structures with desirable adhesion. The current research, for the first time uses a patterning technique to fabricate smart adhesion surfaces: single- and two-level hierarchical synthetic adhesive structure surfaces with various fibrillar densities and diameters that allows the observation of either the Lotus or gecko adhesion effects. Contact angles of the fabricated structured samples were measured to characterize their wettability, and contamination experiments were performed to study for self-cleaning ability. A conventional and a glass ball attached to an atomic force microscope (AFM) tip were used to obtain the adhesive forces via force-distance curves to study scale effect. A further increase of the adhesive forces on the samples was achieved by applying an adhesive to the surfaces.  相似文献

Superhydrophobic surfaces: are they really ice-repellent?   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This work investigates the anti-ice performance of various superhydrophobic surfaces under different conditions. The adhesion strength of glaze ice (similar to that deposited during "freezing rain") is used as a measure of ice-releasing properties. The results show that the ice-repellent properties of the materials deteriorate during icing/deicing cycles, as surface asperities appear to be gradually damaged. It is also shown that the anti-icing efficiency of superhydrophobic surfaces is significantly lower in a humid atmosphere, as water condensation both on top of and between surface asperities takes place, leading to significantly larger values of ice adhesion strength. This work thus shows that superhydrophobic surfaces are not always ice-repellent and their use as anti-ice materials may therefore be limited.  相似文献

This report describes the simple preparation of superhydrophobic and lipophobic surfaces by self-organization. Microporous polymer films of a fluorinated polymer with hexagonally arranged pores were prepared by casting from solution under humid conditions. Hexagonally packed water microdroplets were formed by evaporative cooling on the surface of the casting solution. After solvent evaporation, a honeycomb-patterned polymer film was formed with the water droplet array acting as a template; the water droplets themselves evaporated soon after the solvent. Two porous polymer layers were stacked vertically, separated by pillars at the hexagon vertexes. After peeling off the top layer using adhesive tape, a pincushion-like structure was obtained. Here, we show that superhydrophobic behavior was achieved, with the maximum contact angle, 170 degrees, observed using these pincushion structures. Theoretical calculations fit the experimental results well. The lipophobic properties of the films are also discussed.  相似文献

In this study, the authors researched the preparations of superhydrophilic/superhydrophobic surfaces on commercial cup stock polyethylene coated papers by using sparked aluminum nanoparticles deposited on substrates through a sparking process. In this stage, the surface was porous and showed superhydrophilic properties. The samples were then annealed in air at various temperatures and some transformed to superhydrophobicity. It is well known that a suitable roughness in combination with low surface energy has been required to obtain superhydrophobic surfaces. Therefore, it is believed that during annealing process, when polyethylene is diffused from the substrate through the nanoparticle films and the superhydrophobic characteristics were created. The scanning electron microscope images showed that the film surfaces had a fluffy structure for both the as‐deposited and the annealed samples. However, the atomic force microscopy phase images showed completely different surface properties. Moreover, the X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra showed different surface chemical compositions. The experimental results revealed that the working temperature to produce superhydrophobic surfaces depended on the sparked film thickness. Furthermore, in order to prove the assumption explained above, glass and poly (methyl methacrylate) were also used as substrates.  相似文献

In recent decades, sustainable superhydrophobic surfaces from natural materials and sustainable processes have attracted increased interest due to their lower environmental footprint and potential applications in self-cleaning surfaces and biomedical devices. Although there is significant progress on selecting suitable nano and micro particles to prepare superhydrophobic surfaces, a comprehensive review on the direct use of sustainable colloidal particles (SCPs) is lacking. In this review, we highlight the recent advances on sustainable superhydrophobic surfaces using SCPs. The composition and properties, extraction methods, and chemical modifications are described, including cellulose nanocrystals, chitin/chitosan nanoparticles, and lignin nanoparticles. In addition to the physico–chemical properties and tunable dimensionality, the fabrication methodologies of superhydrophobic surfaces using modified colloids are described. Finally, the potential applications of these sustainable superhydrophobic surfaces ranging from oil/water separation, biomedical, water harvesting, biofabrication, microfluidic reactor, and food packaging are discussed together with a future perspective on the advances made.  相似文献

Bacterial adhesion and subsequent biofilm formation on the surfaces of synthetic materials imposes a significant burden in various fields, which can lead to infections in patients or reduce the service life of industrial devices. Therefore, there is increasing interest in imbuing surfaces with antibacterial properties. Bioinspired superhydrophobic surfaces with high water contact angles (>150°) exhibit excellent surface repellency against contaminations, thereby preventing initial bacterial adhesion and inhibiting biofilm formation. However, conventional superhydrophobic surfaces typically lack long-term durability and are incapable of achieving persistent efficacy against bacterial adhesion. To overcome these limitations, in recent decades, dual-function superhydrophobic antibacterial surfaces with both bacteria-repelling and bacteria-killing properties have been developed by introducing bactericidal components. These surfaces have demonstrated improved long-term antibacterial performance in addressing the issues associated with surface-attached bacteria. This review summarizes the recent advancements of these dual-function superhydrophobic antibacterial surfaces. First, a brief overview of the fabrication strategies and bacteria-repelling mechanism of superhydrophobic surfaces is provided and then the dual-function superhydrophobic antibacterial surfaces are classified into three types based on the bacteria-killing mechanism: i) mechanotherapy, ii) chemotherapy, and iii) phototherapy. Finally, the limitations and challenges of current research are discussed and future perspectives in this promising area are proposed.  相似文献

Superhydrophobic surfaces have contact angles that exceed 150 degrees and are known to reduce surface fouling, protect surfaces, and improve liquid-liquid separations. Electrospun sub-micron fiber mats can perform as superhydrophobic surfaces. Superhydrophobic behavior is typically measured on planar surfaces, whereas applications may require curved surfaces. This paper discuses the measurement of water contact angles of fiber mats formed on cylindrical surfaces to create superhydrophobic behavior on curved surfaces. Equations are derived that relate the radius of curvature of spherical and cylindrical surfaces and drop size to the observed contact angle on the curved surfaces. Calculations from the equations agree well with experimental observations on spherical surfaces reported in literature and on cylindrical surfaces created in our lab.  相似文献

Superhydrophobic surfaces have drawn a lot of interest both in academia and in industry because of the self-cleaning properties. This critical review focuses on the recent progress (within the last three years) in the preparation, theoretical modeling, and applications of superhydrophobic surfaces. The preparation approaches are reviewed according to categorized approaches such as bottom-up, top-down, and combination approaches. The advantages and limitations of each strategy are summarized and compared. Progress in theoretical modeling of surface design and wettability behavior focuses on the transition state of superhydrophobic surfaces and the role of the roughness factor. Finally, the problems/obstacles related to applicability of superhydrophobic surfaces in real life are addressed. This review should be of interest to students and scientists interested specifically in superhydrophobic surfaces but also to scientists and industries focused in material chemistry in general.  相似文献

A low-cost method was used to fabricate superhydrophobic coatings on a macroscopic model ship and the drag-reducing effect was investigated at both low and high speed. Hierarchical structures of the superhydrophobic copper coatings were characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and X-ray diffraction(XRD). Drag coefficient tests on surfaces with different wettability(superhydrophilic, hydrophilic, hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces) showed that the as-prepared superhydrophobic surface exhibited a high remarkable drag reduction of 81% at a low speed of 1 mm/s. In the drag-reducing tests with model ship, the superhydrophobic coatings also exhibited around 16% drag reduction at a velocity of 0.3 m/s.  相似文献
