This paper combines the pseudo‐compressibility procedure, the preconditioning technique for accelerating the time marching for stiff hyperbolic equations, and high‐order accurate central compact scheme to establish the code for efficiently and accurately solving incompressible flows numerically based on the finite difference discretization. The spatial scheme consists of the sixth‐order compact scheme and 10th‐order numerical filter operator for guaranteeing computational stability. The preconditioned pseudo‐compressible Navier–Stokes equations are marched temporally using the implicit lower–upper symmetric Gauss–Seidel time integration method, and the time accuracy is improved by the dual‐time step method for the unsteady problems. The efficiency and reliability of the present procedure are demonstrated by applications to Taylor decaying vortices phenomena, double periodic shear layer rolling‐up problem, laminar flow over a flat plate, low Reynolds number unsteady flow around a circular cylinder at Re = 200, high Reynolds number turbulence flow past the S809 airfoil, and the three‐dimensional flows through two 90°curved ducts of square and circular cross sections, respectively. It is found that the numerical results of the present algorithm are in good agreement with theoretical solutions or experimental data. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A relatively simple, yet efficient and accurate finite difference method is developed for the solution of the unsteady boundary layer equations for both laminar and turbulent flows. The numerical procedure is subjected to rigorous validation tests in the laminar case, comparing its predictions with exact analytical solutions, asymptotic solutions, and/or experimental results. Calculations of periodic laminar boundary layers are performed from low to very high oscillation frequencies, for small and large amplitudes, for zero as well as adverse time-mean pressure gradients, and even in the presence of significant flow reversal. The numerical method is then applied to predict a relatively simple experimental periodic turbulent boundary layer, using two well-known quasi-steady closure models. The predictions are shown to be in good agreement with the measurements, thereby demonstrating the suitability of the present numerical scheme for handling periodic turbulent boundary layers. The method is thus a useful tool for the further development of turbulence models for more complex unsteady flows.  相似文献

The present paper proposes a Lagrangian criterion of unsteady flow separation for two-dimensional periodic flows based on the principle of weighted averaging zero skin-friction given by Haller(HALLER, G. Exact theory of unsteady separation for two-dimensional flows. Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 512, 257–311(2004)). By analyzing the distribution of the finite-time Lyapunov exponent(FTLE) along the no-slip wall, it can be found that the periodic separation takes place at the point of the zero FTLE.This new criterion is verified with an analytical solution of the separation bubble and a numerical simulation of lid-driven cavity flows.  相似文献

Multi-particle collision dynamics (MPCD) is a particle based Navier-Stokes solver and in the last ten years it has been largely used to analyze mesoscopic systems where both hydrodynamics and thermal effects have to be taken into account, typical examples being colloidal suspensions and polymer solutions. Though the soundness of this approach is well documented, only a few studies present a systematic validation of the method as a Navier-Stokes solver for relatively complex flows (e.g. unsteady, non-uniform). In this study we use MPCD to simulate an unsteady periodic flow (second Stokes?? problem) and a two dimensional flow (lid-driven cavity). Quantitative comparisons with analytical and finite difference results show that MPCD is able to correctly reproduce the hydrodynamics of these systems in a wide range of numerical parameter values, allowing the applications of MPCD to the analysis of complex fluids in confined geometries such as in Lab-On-a-Chip microfluidic devices. Discrepancies for certain parameter ranges and in specific flow conditions are singled out and discussed.

Simulation of 1D steady flow covers a wide range of practical applications, such as rivers, pipes and hydraulic structures. Various flow patterns coexist in such situations: free surface flows (supercritical, subcritical and hydraulic jump), pressurized flows as well as mixed flows. As a result, development of a unified 1D model for all the situations of interest in civil engineering remains challenging. In this paper, a fast universal solver for 1D continuous and discontinuous steady flows in rivers and pipes is set up and assessed. Developments are initiated from an original unified mathematical model using the Saint‐Venant equations. Application of these equations, originally dedicated to free‐surface flow, is extended to pressurized flow by means of the Preissmann slot model. In particular, an original negative slot is developed in order to handle sub‐atmospheric pressurized flow. Next, the full unsteady model is simplified under the assumption of steadiness and reformulated into a single pseudo‐unsteady differential equation. The derived pseudo‐unsteady formulation aims at keeping the hyperbolic feature of the equation. Stability analysis of the differential equation suggests a unique splitting for the finite volume scheme whatever the flow conditions. The numerical scheme obtained is a universal Flux Vector Splitting which shows robustness and simplicity. Accuracy and performance of the new methodology is assessed by comparison with analytical and experimental results. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Vortex methods have found wide applications in various practical problems. The use of vortex methods in free surface flow problems, however, is still very limited. This paper demonstrates a vortex method for practical computation of non-linear free surface flows produced by moving bodies. The method is a potential flow formulation which uses the exact non-linear free surface boundary condition at the exact location of the instantaneous free surface. The position of the free surface, on which vortices are distributed, is updated using a Lagrangian scheme following the fluid particles on the free surface. The vortex densities are updated by the non-linear dynamic boundary condition, derived from the Euler equations, with an iterative Lagrangian numerical scheme. The formulation is tested numerically for a submerged circular cylinder in unsteady translation. The iteration is shown to converge for all cases. The results of the unsteady simulations agree well with classical linearized solutions. The stability of the method is also discussed.  相似文献

This paper investigates the problems involved in the numerical simulation of free surface wave motions and surface wave effects on marine structures. Various approaches that might be taken in meeting these problems are discussed, and their relative advantages and disadvantages are considered. One particular approach combines a Lagrangian formulation of the governing equations, a triangular grid and a finite-difference solution procedure. Since this approach has some distinct advantages in the numerical calculation of fluid flows which include a free surface, it formed the basis for the development of one particular computer code, SPLISH. Sufficient progress has been made with the SPLISH code to demonstrate the attractiveness of numerical calculations for wave flow problems. Recent computational results demonstrate that realistic time-varying local flow fields, pressures and forces on and near structures such as a half-cyclinder on the ocean floor can be determined from numerical calculations for certain conditions. Good agreement is found in comparison of the numerical results from SPLISH, recent linear wave Green's function and fifth-order asymptotic solutions for wave motion over a bottom seated half-cylinder, and an experimental simulation in a wave channel.  相似文献

A spectral element algorithm for solution of the unsteady incompressible Navier–Stokes and scalar (species/heat) transport equations is developed using the algebraic factorisation scheme. The new algorithm utilises Nth order Gauss–Lobatto–Legendre points for velocity and the scalar, while (N-2)th order Gauss–Legendre points are used for pressure. As a result, the algorithm does not require inter-element continuity for pressure and pressure boundary conditions on solid surfaces. Implementations of the algorithm are performed for conforming and non-conforming grids. The latter is accomplished using both the point-wise matching and integral projection methods, and applied for grids with both polynomial and geometric non-conformities. Code validation cases include the unsteady scalar convection equation, and Kovasznay flow in two- and three-dimensional domains. Using cases with analytical solutions, the algorithm is shown to achieve spectral accuracy in space and second-order accuracy in time. The results for the Boussinesq approximation for buoyancy-driven flows, and the species mixing in a continuous flow micro-mixer are also included as examples of applications that require long-time integration of the scalar transport equations.  相似文献

We recently proposed an improved (9,5) higher order compact (HOC) scheme for the unsteady two‐dimensional (2‐D) convection–diffusion equations. Because of using only five points at the current time level in the discretization procedure, the scheme was seen to be computationally more efficient than its predecessors. It was also seen to capture very accurately the solution of the unsteady 2‐D Navier–Stokes (N–S) equations for incompressible viscous flows in the stream function–vorticity (ψ – ω) formulation. In this paper, we extend the scope of the scheme for solving the unsteady incompressible N–S equations based on primitive variable formulation on a collocated grid. The parabolic momentum equations are solved for the velocity field by a time‐marching strategy and the pressure is obtained by discretizing the elliptic pressure Poisson equation by the steady‐state form of the (9,5) scheme with the Neumann boundary conditions. In particular, for pressure, we adopt a strategy on the collocated grid in conjunction with ideas borrowed from the staggered grid approach in finite volume. We first apply this extension to a problem having analytical solution and then to the famous lid‐driven square cavity problem. We also apply our formulation to the backward‐facing step problem to see how the method performs for external flow problems. The results are presented and are compared with established numerical results. This new approach is seen to produce excellent comparison in all the cases. Tangential discontinuities [1] are introduced in solving several transient and steady-state problems of gas dynamics. These discontinuities are unstable [2] as a result of the effects of viscosity and thermal conductivity. Therefore it is advisable to replace the tangential discontinuity by a mixing region and account for its interaction with the inviscid flows, establishing on the boundaries of this region the conditions of vanishing friction stress and equality of the velocity and temperature components to the corresponding velocity and temperature components of the inviscid flows. This formulation improves the accuracy of the solution of such problems by posing them as problems with irregular reflection and intersection of shock waves [1].The consideration of the interaction of unsteady turbulent mixing regions with the inviscid flow also permits the formulation of several problems in which the effects of viscosity lead to complete rearrangement of the flow pattern (the lambda-configuration) with the interaction of the reflected shock wave with the boundary layer in the shock tube [3,4], the formation of zones of developed separation ahead of obstacles, etc.).In this connection, §1 presents an analysis of the self-similar solutions of the unsteady turbulent mixing equations (a corresponding analysis of the laminar mixing equations which coincide with the boundary layer equations is presented in [1]). It is shown that these self-similar solutions describe, along with the several problems noted above, the problems of the formation of steady jets and mixing zones in the base wake.As an example, §2 presents, within the framework of the proposed schematization, an approximate solution of the problem of the interaction of a shock wave reflected from a semi-infinite wall with the boundary layer on a horizontal plate behind the incident shock wave. The results obtained are applied to the analysis of reflection in a shock tube. Computational results are presented which are in qualitative agreement with experiment [3, 4].  相似文献

Recent developments in identifying Lagrangian coherent structures from finite-time velocity data have provided a theoretical basis for understanding chaotic transport in general flows with aperiodic dependence on time. As these theoretical developments are extended and applied to more complex flows, an accurate and general numerical method for computing these structures is needed to exploit these ideas for engineering applications. We present an unstructured high-order hp/spectral-element method for solving the two-dimensional compressible form of the Navier–Stokes equations. A corresponding high-order particle tracking method is also developed for extracting the Lagrangian coherent structures from the numerically computed velocity fields. Two different techniques are used; the first computes the direct Lyapunov exponent from an unstructured initial particle distribution, providing easier resolution of structures located close to physical boundaries, whereas the second advects a small material line initialized close to a Lagrangian saddle point to delineate these structures. We demonstrate our algorithm on simulations of a bluff-body flow at a Reynolds number of Re = 150 and a Mach number of M = 0.2 with and without flow forcing. We show that, in the unforced flow, periodic vortex shedding is predicted by our numerical simulations that is in stark contrast to the aperiodic flow field in the case with forcing. An analysis of the Lagrangian structures reveals a transport barrier that inhibits cross-wake transport in the unforced flow. The transport barrier is broken with forcing, producing enhanced transport properties by chaotic advection and consequently improved mixing of advected scalars within the wake.  相似文献

We recently proposed a second-order accurate ψ-v formulation of the steady-state Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations on compact Cartesian nonuniform grids. In the current work, we extend the ideas of the aforesaid formulation and propose a second-order spatially compact, implicit, stable ψ-v formulation for the unsteady incompressible N-S equations. Contrary to the existing ψ-v finite difference formulations which use grid transformation, the proposed scheme is developed for nonuniform Cartesian grids without transformation specifically designed for two-dimensional laminar flow past bluff bodies. It has been implemented on problems of internal flows inside curved regions as well as those involving fluid-embedded body interaction. However, the robustness of the scheme is highlighted by the accurate resolution of a host of complex flows past bluff bodies with different physical set-ups and boundary conditions. It was seen to handle problems involving both uniform and accelerated flows across a wide range of structures of varied shape, namely, a flat plate, a circular cylinder, inclined square cylinder, and a wedge in channel hinged to the wall. Apart from elegantly capturing all the details of the shedded vortex structures under different circumstances, the scheme was also able to handle both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary with equal ease. In all the cases, our results are found to be extremely close to the available numerical and experimental results.

A high‐order compact finite‐difference lattice Boltzmann method (CFDLBM) is proposed and applied to accurately compute steady and unsteady incompressible flows. Herein, the spatial derivatives in the lattice Boltzmann equation are discretized by using the fourth‐order compact FD scheme, and the temporal term is discretized with the fourth‐order Runge–Kutta scheme to provide an accurate and efficient incompressible flow solver. A high‐order spectral‐type low‐pass compact filter is used to stabilize the numerical solution. An iterative initialization procedure is presented and applied to generate consistent initial conditions for the simulation of unsteady flows. A sensitivity study is also conducted to evaluate the effects of grid size, filtering, and procedure of boundary conditions implementation on accuracy and convergence rate of the solution. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed solution procedure based on the CFDLBM method are also examined by comparison with the classical LBM for different flow conditions. Two test cases considered herein for validating the results of the incompressible steady flows are a two‐dimensional (2‐D) backward‐facing step and a 2‐D cavity at different Reynolds numbers. Results of these steady solutions computed by the CFDLBM are thoroughly compared with those of a compact FD Navier–Stokes flow solver. Three other test cases, namely, a 2‐D Couette flow, the Taylor's vortex problem, and the doubly periodic shear layers, are simulated to investigate the accuracy of the proposed scheme in solving unsteady incompressible flows. Results obtained for these test cases are in good agreement with the analytical solutions and also with the available numerical and experimental results. The study shows that the present solution methodology is robust, efficient, and accurate for solving steady and unsteady incompressible flow problems even at high Reynolds numbers. A double-transform technique provides a semi-analytic solution in the form of a series expansion for unsteady axisymmetric Stokes flow in the entrance region of a semi-infinite rigid cylindrical tube. This in turn offers an appropriate bench-mark problem for evaluating the quality of numerical approximations. To illustrate this, periodic axial flow in a circular cylinder is considered. Some aspects of the bench-mark problem that are of interest include the reverse flow in the wall layers, the accuracy of the approximate method in different flow regimes and the mesh grading. This bench-mark problem and the numerical study provide some insight into practical issues pertinent to the approximate solution of unsteady and periodic flows.  相似文献

Predicting unsteady flows and aerodynamic forces for large displacement motion of microstructures requires transient solution of Boltzmann equation with moving boundaries. For the inclusion of moving complex boundaries for these problems, three immersed boundary method flux formulations (interpolation, relaxation, and interrelaxation) are presented. These formulations are implemented in a 2‐D finite volume method solver for ellipsoidal‐statistical (ES)‐Bhatnagar‐Gross‐Krook (BGK) equations using unstructured meshes. For the verification, a transient analytical solution for free molecular 1‐D flow is derived, and results are compared with the immersed boundary (IB)‐ES‐BGK methods. In 2‐D, methods are verified with the conformal, non‐moving finite volume method, and it is shown that the interrelaxation flux formulation gives an error less than the interpolation and relaxation methods for a given mesh size. Furthermore, formulations applied to a thermally induced flow for a heated beam near a cold substrate show that interrelaxation formulation gives more accurate solution in terms of heat flux. As a 2‐D unsteady application, IB/ES‐BGK methods are used to determine flow properties and damping forces for impulsive motion of microbeam due to high inertial forces. IB/ES‐BGK methods are compared with Navier–Stokes solution at low Knudsen numbers, and it is shown that velocity slip in the transitional rarefied regime reduces the unsteady damping force. An experimental investigation of water flow in a T-shaped channel with rectangular cross section (20 × 20 mm inlet ID and 20 × 40 mm outlet ID) has been conducted for a Reynolds number Re range of 56–422, based on inlet diameter. Dynamical conditions and the T-channel geometry of the current study are applicable to the microscale. 2-D planar particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) were used in multiple locations of the T-channel to investigate local dynamical behaviors. Steady symmetric and asymmetric flow regimes predicted in the literature, which is largely numerical, are experimentally verified. Unsteady flow regimes, which are numerically predicted to occur at higher Re but have not yet been experimentally characterized, are also examined, and real-time LIF results illuminate the evolution of unsteady structure. Experimental data of the present resolution and scope are not presently available for unsteady flow regimes. Time scales are presented for unsteady flow regimes, which are found to exhibit periodic behavior and to occur for Re  ≥ 195. An unsteady symmetrical regime is identified for Re ≥ 350 that is detrimental to mixing. Momentum fields and dynamical behaviors of all flow regimes are characterized in detail, such that published mixing trends may be better understood. Results of all experimental trials were used to construct a regime map. A symmetric topology is found to be dominant for Re from 56 to 116, when flow is steady, and 350 to 422, when flow is characterized by unsteady stagnation-point oscillation in the T-channel junction. Asymmetric flow, which is positively indicated for mixing, is dominant for Re between 142 and 298, and the fluid interface exhibits both steady (two standing vortices) and unsteady (shear-layer type roll-up) behaviors. This result is based on multiple experiments and suggests a practical operating range of 142  ≤ Re ≤ 298 where asymmetric flow is highly likely to experimentally occur. The identification of an upper limit on Re,  beyond which mixing appears negatively impacted by a more symmetrical momentum field, is practically important as pressure drops on the microscale are significant.  相似文献

The diagonally implicit harmonic balance method is developed in an overset mesh topology and applied to unsteady rotor flows analysis. Its efficiency is by reducing the complexity of a fully implicit harmonic balance method which becomes more flexible in handling the higher harmonics of the flow solutions. Applied to the overset mesh topology, the efficiency of the method becomes greater by reducing the number of solution interpolations required during the entire solution procedure as the method reduces the unsteady computation into periodic steady state. To verify the accuracy and efficiency of the method, both hovering and unsteady forward flight of Caradonna and Tung and AH-1G rotors are solved. Compared with wind-tunnel experiments, the numerical results demonstrate good agreements at computational cost an order of magnitude more efficient than the conventional time-accurate computation method. The proposed method has great potential in other engineering applications, including flapping wing vehicles, turbo-machinery, wind-turbines, etc.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the numerical approximation of steady and unsteady generalized Newtonian fluid flows using divergence free finite elements generated by the Powell–Sabin–Heindl elements. We derive a priori and a posteriori finite element error estimates and prove convergence of the method of successive approximations for the steady flow case. A priori error estimates of unsteady flows are also considered. These results provide a theoretical foundation and supporting numerical studies are to be provided in Part II.
