Mixtures composed of water, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and a bolaform surfactant with two aza-crown ethers as polar headgroups (termed Bola C-16) were investigated by modulating the mole ratios between the components. The two surfactants have ionic and nonionic, but ionizable, headgroups, respectively. The ionization is due to the complexation of alkali ions by the aza-crown ether unit(s). Structural, thermodynamic, and transport properties of the above mixtures were investigated. Results from surface tension, translational self-diffusion, and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) are reported and discussed. Interactions between the two surfactants to form mixed micelles result in a combination of electrostatic and hydrophobic contributions. These effects are reflected in the size and shape of the aggregates as well as in transport properties. The translational diffusion of the components in mixed micelles, in particular, depends on the Bola C-16/SDS mole ratio. Nonideality of mixing of the two components was inferred from the dependence of the critical micelle concentration, cmc, on the mole fraction of Bola C-16. This behavior is also reflected in surface adsorption and in the area per polar headgroup at the air-water interface. SANS data analysis for the pure components gives results in good agreement with previous findings. An analysis of data relative to mixed systems allows us to compute some structural parameters of the mixed aggregates. The dependence of aggregation numbers, nu(T), on the Bola C-16/SDS mole ratio displays a maximum that depends on the overall surfactant content and is rationalized in terms of the nonideality of mixing. Aggregates grow perpendicularly to the major rotation axis, as formerly observed in the Bola C-16 system, and become progressively ellipsoidal in shape.  相似文献

The SDS unimer concentration in a series of mixed anionic/non-ionic surfactant solutions comprising sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS) and sugar-based dodecyl bis-N-methyl gluconamides (C12BNMG) have been studied using an anionic surfactant selective electrode, both in the presence and absence of the polyampholyte gelatin. The activity of the SDS has been calculated at the critical micelle concentration (CMC) in the gelatin-free studies and at CMC(1) in the gelatin studies. From the known solution composition, the activity coefficients can be calculated; these show deviations from unity around a solution mole fraction (SDS) of 0.95 SDS in both cases. The deviation is significantly greater in the presence of gelatin, to an extent that the SDS activity versus SDS curve exhibits a maximum and a minimum in the region SDS=0.8–1.0, consistent with the possibility of coexisting micelle types, in agreement with our earlier NMR study (Griffiths et al. (1998) J Chem Soc Chem Comm 1:53).  相似文献

The self-assembly of the protein hydrophobin, HFBII, and its self-assembly with cationic, anionic, and nonionic surfactants hexadecylterimethyl ammonium bromide, CTAB, sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS, and hexaethylene monododecyl ether, C(12)E(6), in aqueous solution have been studied by small-angle neutron scattering, SANS. HFBII self-assembles in solution as small globular aggregates, consistent with the formation of trimers or tetramers. Its self-assembly is not substantially affected by the pH or electrolytes. In the presence of CTAB, SDS, or C(12)E(6), HFBII/surfactant complexes are formed. The structure of the HFBII/surfactant complexes has been identified using contrast variation and is in the form of HFBII molecules bound to the outer surface of globular surfactant micelles. The binding of HFBII decreases the surfactant micelle aggregation number for increasing HFBII concentration in solution, and the number of hydrophobin molecules bound/micelle increases.  相似文献

Aqueous solutions of a nonionic surfactant (either Tween20 or BrijL23) and an anionic surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS) are investigated, using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). SANS spectra are analysed by using a core-shell model to describe the form factor of self-assembled surfactant micelles; the intermicellar interactions are modelled by using a hard-sphere Percus–Yevick (HS-PY) or a rescaled mean spherical approximation (RMSA) structure factor. Choosing these specific nonionic surfactants allows for comparison of the effect of branched (Tween20) and linear (BrijL23) surfactant headgroups, both constituted of poly-ethylene oxide (PEO) groups. The nonionic–anionic surfactant mixtures are studied at various concentrations up to highly concentrated samples (ϕ ≲ 0.45) and various mixing ratios, from pure nonionic to pure anionic surfactant solutions. The scattering data reveal the formation of mixed micelles already at concentrations below the critical micelle concentration of SDS. At higher volume fractions, excluded volume effects dominate the intermicellar structuring, even for charged micelles. In consequence, at high volume fractions, the intermicellar structuring is the same for charged and uncharged micelles. At all mixing ratios, almost spherical mixed micelles form. This offers the opportunity to create a system of colloidal particles with a variable surface charge. This excludes only roughly equimolar mixing ratios (X≈ 0.4–0.6) at which the micelles significantly increase in size and ellipticity due to specific sulfate–EO interactions.  相似文献

The formation of micelles in aqueous mixtures of a carbohydrate-based bolaamphiphile and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is investigated by surface tension and small-angle neutron scattering. The obtained values of critical micelle concentration (CMC) are analyzed within the framework of regular solution theory. Synergetic interactions between the bolaamphiphile and SDS are observed (parameter beta is negative; a minimum in the plot CMC vs composition). SANS data are collected for mixtures containing protonated and deuterated SDS. This gives us the possibility to conclude that mixed micelles with a homogeneous distribution of surfactant molecules within the micelle are formed. The shape of the micelles is found to be slightly oblate.  相似文献

By constructing an elaborate set of potentiometric titration together with data analysis system, apparent acid dissociation indices (pK a app ) for two bile acids were determined in the mixed surfactant system of bile salts (Sodium Deoxycholate, NaDC, and Sodium Chenodeoxycholate, NaCDC) with nonionic surfactants (Hexaethyleneglycol monon-dodecylether, C12E6, Decanoyl-N-methylglucamide, MEGA-10) in aqueous solution at ionic strength 1.5 as a function of mole fraction in the surfactant mixture. It was found that with increasing the bile salt concentration, pK a app as well as pH showed an abrupt rise at a certain concentration of the bile salt being regardable as a critical micellization concentration (CMC) and reached a constant value at the range sufficiently higher than CMC for each pure bile salt system, meaning that the dissociation degree of carboxyl group in micelle is smaller than that in bulk. In the mixed systems of free bile salts with nonionic surfactants, the dissociation state of carboxyl groups in mixed micelles depends on the species of hydrophilic group of nonionic surfactants as well as on mole fraction in the surfactant mixture.  相似文献

Micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) was used to remove cadmium ions from wastewater efficiently. In this study the nonionic surfactants polyoxyethyleneglycol dodecyl ether (Brij35) and polyoxyethylene octyl phenyl ether (TritonX-100) were for micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration to lower the dosage of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The surfactant critical micelle concentration (CMC) and the degree of micelle counterion binding were investigated. The effects of nonionic surfactant addition on the efficiency of cadmium removal, the residual quantities of surfactant, the permeate flux and the secondary membrane resistance were investigated. A comparison between MEUF with SDS and MEUF with mixed anionic–nonionic surfactants was undertaken. The results show that the addition of Brij35 or TritonX-100 reduced the CMC of SDS and the degree of counterion binding for the micelles. Due to these variations the Cd2+ rejection efficiency was at a maximum when the Brij35:SDS and the TritonX-100:SDS molar ratio was 0.5. The Cd2+ rejection efficiency in MEUF with SDS is higher than for MEUF with mixed surfactants when the total dose of surfactant is constant. The permeate flux of MEUF with SDS is higher than that for MEUF with mixed surfactants while the secondary resistance of MEUF with SDS is less than that of MEUF with mixed surfactants.  相似文献

The structure of micelles formed by a four component water-in-oil nonionic microemulsion surfactant polyoxyethene (20) sorbitan monoleate (Tween 80), sorbitan monolaurate (Span 20) at ethyl oleate and deuterated water interface have been probed by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The total surfactant concentration in each of the samples studied (Tween 80: Span 20) is fixed at 3:2. The deuterated water content is variable at 5–60% w/w. The experimental SANS data from all the seven samples are fit well by spherical micelles interacting with hard sphere potential. Increased deuterated water leads to spherical to lamellar and rod-like micelle geometry featured in the SANS scattering data. The observed change in micelle geometry supports the characterization of phase transition between the self-assembled micelles of the nonionic microemulsion.   相似文献

Surfactants of practical interest are invariably mixtures of different types. In this study, mixtures of sugar-based n-dodecyl-beta-D-maltoside with cationic dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide, anionic sodium dodecylsulfate, and nonionic pentaethyleneglycol monododecyl ether in solution, with and without supporting electrolyte, have been studied using surface tension and fluorescence spectroscopic techniques. Interaction parameters and mole fraction of components in mixed micelles were calculated using regular solution theory. The magnitude of interactions between n-dodecyl-beta-D-maltoside and other surfactants followed the order anionic/nonionic > cationic/nonionic > nonionic/nonionic mixtures. Since all surfactants have the same hydrophobic groups, strengths of interactions are attributed to the structures of hydrophilic headgroups. Electrolyte reduced synergism between n-dodecyl-beta-D-maltoside and ionic surfactant due to charge neutralization. Industrial sugar-based surfactant, dodecyl polyglucoside, yielded results similar to that with dodecyl maltoside, implying that tested commercial alkyl polyglucosides are similar to the pure laboratory samples in synergistic interactions with other surfactants. Fluorescence study not only supported the cmc results using tensiometry, but showed that interfaces of all the above mixed micelle/solution interfaces are mildly hydrophobic. Based on these results, an attempt is made to discover the nature of interactions to be a combination of intermolecular potential energies and free energy due to packing of surfactant molecules in micelles.  相似文献

The evolution of the microstructure and composition occurring in the aqueous solutions of di-alkyl chain cationic/nonionic surfactant mixtures has been studied in detail using small angle neutron scattering, SANS. For all the systems studied we observe an evolution from a predominantly lamellar phase, for solutions rich in di-alkyl chain cationic surfactant, to mixed cationic/nonionic micelles, for solutions rich in the nonionic surfactant. At intermediate solution compositions there is a region of coexistence of lamellar and micellar phases, where the relative amounts change with solution composition. A number of different di-alkyl chain cationic surfactants, DHDAB, 2HT, DHTAC, DHTA methyl sulfate, and DISDA methyl sulfate, and nonionic surfactants, C12E12 and C12E23, are investigated. For these systems the differences in phase behavior is discussed, and for the mixture DHDAB/C12E12 a direct comparison with theoretical predictions of phase behavior is made. It is shown that the phase separation that can occur in these mixed systems is induced by a depletion force arising from the micellar component, and that the size and volume fraction of the micelles are critical factors.  相似文献

The interaction of a partially fluorinated alkyl sulfate, sodium 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyl sulfate (C6F13CH2CH2OSO3Na), with the polyampholyte gelatin has been examined in aqueous solution using surface tension and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The 19F chemical shift of each fluorine environment in the surfactant is unaltered by the addition of gelatin, indicating that there is no contact between the gelatin and the fluorocarbon core of the micelle. The chemical shift of the two methylene groups closest to the headgroup is altered when gelatin is present, disclosing the location of the polymer. The critical micelle concentration (cmc) of the surfactant, cmc = 17+/-1 mM, corresponds to an effective alkyl chain (CnH2n+1) length of n = 11. In the presence of gelatin, the cmc is substantially reduced as expected, cmc(1) = 4+/-1 mM, which is also consistent with an effective alkyl chain length of n = 11. In the presence of the fluorosurfactant, the monotonic decay of the SANS from the gelatin-only system is replaced by a substantial peak at an intermediate Q value mirroring the micellar interaction. At low ionic strengths, the gelatin/micelle complex can be described by an ellipsoid. At higher ionic strengths, the electrostatic interaction between the micelles is screened and the peak in the gelatin scattering disappears. The correlation length describing the network structure decreases with increasing SDS concentration as the bound micelles promote a collapse of the network.  相似文献

Formation and structure of micelles from two amphiphilic polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-PEO) diblock copolymers (PS mol.wt. 1000; PEO mol.wt. 3000 and 5000) were examined by surface tension, viscosity, steady state fluorescence, dynamic light scattering (DLS), small angle neutron scattering (SANS), and cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the copolymers in aqueous solution was ca. 0.05%; micelle hydrodynamic diameter was 30–35 nm with a narrow size distribution. SANS studies show that the copolymers form ellipsoidal micelles with semi major axis ~23 nm and semi minor axis ~8 nm. No significant change in the structure was found with temperature and presence of salt. The copolymer micelles interaction with the ionic surfactants sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) was also examined by DLS and SANS.  相似文献

At low pH conditions and in the presence of anionic, cationic, and nonionic surfactants, hydrophobically modified alkali-soluble emulsions (HASE) exhibit pronounced interaction that results in the solubilization of the latex. The interaction between HASE latex and surfactant was studied using various techniques, such as light transmittance, isothermal titration calorimetry, laser light scattering, and electrophoresis. For anionic surfactant, noncooperative hydrophobic binding dominates the interaction at concentrations lower than the critical aggregation concentration (CAC) (C < CAC). However, cooperative hydrophobic binding controls the formation of mixed micelles at high surfactant concentrations (C > or = CAC), where the cloudy solution becomes clear. For cross-linked HASE latex, anionic surfactant binds only noncooperatively to the latex and causes it to swell. For cationic surfactant, electrostatic interaction occurs at very low surfactant concentrations, resulting in phase separation. With further increase in surfactant concentration, noncooperative hydrophobic and cooperative hydrophobic interactions dominate the binding at low and high surfactant concentrations, respectively. For anionic and cationic surfactant systems, the CAC is lower than the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of surfactants in water. In addition, counterion condensation plays an important role during the binding interaction between HASE latex and ionic surfactants. In the case of nonionic surfactants, free surfactant micelles are formed in solution due to their relatively low CMC values, and HASE latexes are directly solubilized into the micellar core of nonionic surfactants.  相似文献

The structures of the mixed anionic/nonionic surfactant micelles of SDS/C12E6 and SDS/C12E8 have been measured by small angle neutron scattering (SANS). The variations in the micelle aggregation number and surface charge with composition, measured in D2O and in dilute electrolyte, 0.01 and 0.05 M NaCl, provide data on the relative roles of the surfactant headgroup steric and electrostatic interactions and their contributions to the free energy of micellization. For the SDS/C12E8 mixture, solutions increasingly rich in C12E8 show a modest micellar growth and an increase in the surface charge. The changes with increasing electrolyte concentration are similarly modest. In contrast, for the SDS/C12E6 mixture, solutions rich in C12E6 show a more significant increase in aggregation number. Furthermore, electrolyte has a more substantial effect on the aggregation for the nonionic (C12E6) rich mixtures. The experimental results are discussed in the context of estimates of the steric and electrostatic contributions to the free energy of micellization, calculated from the molecular thermodynamic approach. The variation in micelle surface charge is discussed in the context of the "dressed micelle" theory for micelle ionization, and other related data.  相似文献

The dynamic and structural perturbations that result from the interactions between the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and the hydrophobically modified biopolymer alginate (HM-alginate) have been studied with the aid of rheological methods, turbidimetry, and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The rheological results for a semidilute HM-alginate solution in the presence of SDS disclose strong interactions between HM-alginate and SDS at a low level of surfactant addition, and this feature is accompanied by enhanced turbidity. At higher surfactant concentrations the association complexes are disrupted. A strong temperature effect of the viscosity is observed in HM-alginate solutions at moderate SDS concentrations, where an elevated temperature leads to enhanced chain mobility, which promotes a breakup of the association complexes. The SANS results reveal a pronounced peak in the plot of scattered intensity versus wavevector q at intermediate q values for SDS concentrations above the critical micelle concentration (cmc). With contrast-matching conditions, using deuterated SDS instead of SDS, no interaction peak appears but an "upturn" in the scattered intensity is observed at small q value. The magnitude of this effect decreases with increasing surfactant concentration, showing clearly that SDS is capable of breaking up the large aggregates created.  相似文献

Interaction and stability of binary mixtures of cationic surfactants hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HTAB) or hexadecylpyridinium bromide (HPyBr) with nonionic surfactant decanoyl-N-methyl-glucamide (Mega-10) have been studied at different mole fraction of cationic surfactants by using interfacial tension measurements and fluorescence probe techniques. From interfacial tension measurements, the critical micellar concentration and various interfacial thermodynamic parameters have been evaluated. The experimental cmc's were analyzed with the pseudophase separation model, the regular solution theory, and the Maeda's approach. These approaches allowed us to determine the interaction parameter and composition in the mixed state. By using the static quenching method, the mean micellar aggregation numbers of pure and mixed micelles of HTAB + Mega-10 were obtained. It has been observed that the aggregation number of mixed micelles deviates negatively from the ideal behavior. The micropolarity of the micelle was monitored with pyrene fluorescence intensity ratio and found to be increase with the increase of ionic content. The polarization of fluorescence probe Rhodamine B was monitored at different mole fraction of cationic surfactants.  相似文献

In aqueous solution, the micellization and microenvironment characteristics of the micelle assemblies of three anionic surfactants, sodium 1-(n-alkyl)naphthalene-4-sulfonates (SANS), have been investigated by steady-state fluorescence and time-resolved fluorescence decay techniques using pyrene, Ru(bpy)3(2+), and 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene as fluorescence probes. The critical micelle concentrations (cmc's), effective carbon atom numbers (neff's), hydrophilic-lipophilic balances (HLBs), mean micelle aggregation numbers, micropolarities, and microviscosities of these surfactant micelles have been determined. The logarithmic cmc of the alkylnaphthalene sulfonates decreases linearly with an increase in the neff. The logarithmic aggregation number of the alkylnaphthalene sulfonates increases linearly with an increase in the neff. However, in contrast to the alkylsufonates and the alkylbenzene sulfonates, the aggregation for these alkylnaphthalene sulfonate molecules is less sensitive to the increase in the neff. The micropolarity of these alkylnaphthalene sulfonate micelles is less sensitive to the increase in the alkyl chain length and is lower than that of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The microviscosity of these alkylnaphthalene sulfonate micelles increases with an increase in the alkyl chain length and is lower than those of nonionic surfactants and zwitterionic surfactants. These results suggest that naphthyl rings have a notable effect on the micellization of SANS.

The interactions between an oxyphenylethylene-oxyethylene nonionic diblock copolymer with the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) have been studied in dilute aqueous solutions by static and dynamic light scattering (SLS and DLS, respectively), isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), and 13C and self-diffusion nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. The studied copolymer, S20E67, where S denotes the hydrophobic styrene oxide unit and E the hydrophilic oxyethylene unit, forms micelles of 15.6 nm at 25 degrees C, whose core is formed by the styrene oxide chains surrounded by a water swollen polyoxyethylene corona. The S20E67/SDS system has been investigated at a copolymer concentration of 2.5 g dm(-3), for which the copolymer is fully micellized, and with varying surfactant concentration up to approximately 0.15 M. When SDS is added to the solution, two different types of complexes are observed at various surfactant concentrations. From SLS and DLS it can be seen that, at low SDS concentrations, a copolymer-rich surfactant mixed micelle or complex is formed after association of SDS molecules to block copolymer micelles. These interactions give rise to a strong decrease in both light scattering intensity and hydrodynamic radius of the mixed micelles, which has been ascribed to an effective reduction of the complex size, and also an effect arising from the increasing electrostatic repulsion of charged surfactant-copolymer micelles. At higher surfactant concentrations, the copolymer-rich surfactant micelles progressively are destroyed to give surfactant-rich-copolymer micelles, which would be formed by a surfactant micelle bound to one or very few copolymer unimers. ITC data seem to confirm the results of light scattering, showing the dehydration and rehydration processes accompanying the formation and subsequent destruction of the copolymer-rich surfactant mixed micelles. The extent of interaction between the copolymer and the surfactant is seen to involve as much as carbon 3 (C3) of the SDS molecule. Self-diffusion coefficients corroborated light scattering data.  相似文献
