(AB)f star block copolymers were synthesized by the radical polymerization of a poly(t‐butyl acrylate)‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) diblock macroinitiator with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate in methanol under UV irradiation. Diblock macroinitiators were prepared by diethyldithiocarbamate‐mediated sequential living radical copolymerization initiated by (4‐cyano‐4‐diethyldithiocarbamyl)pentanoic acid under UV irradiation. The arm number (f) was controlled by the variation of the initial concentration of the diblock initiator. It was found from light scattering data that such star block copolymers (f ≥ 344) not only took a spherical shape but also formed a single molecule in solution. Subsequently, we derived amphiphilic [arm: poly(acrylic acid)‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate)] star block copolymers by the hydrolysis of poly(t‐butyl acrylate) blocks. These amphiphilic star block copolymers were soluble in water because the external blocks were composed of hydrophilic poly(acrylic acid) chains. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Bisbenzimidazole copper dichloride complexes (CuBBIMs), when activated with methylaluminoxane, catalyze the random copolymerization of ethylene with acrylates to produce highly linear functional copolymers. To probe the sensitivity of the copolymerization to the catalyst structure, a series of CuBBIM catalysts with various steric, electronic, and geometric ligand characteristics was prepared, including CuBBIMs having benzimidazole ring substituents and ligand backbones of various lengths. Four different acrylates were also evaluated as comonomers (t‐butyl acrylate, methyl acrylate, t‐butyl methacrylate, and methyl methacrylate). Although no obvious ligand‐based influences on copolymerization were identified, the structure of the acrylate comonomer was found to exert significant effects. Copolymers prepared with t‐butyl methacrylate comonomer exhibited the highest ethylene contents (31–63%), whereas those prepared with methyl acrylate contained only minor amounts of ethylene (<15%). Copolymerizations carried out at lowered acrylate feed levels generally had increased ethylene contents but showed smaller yields, lowered molecular weights, and increased branching. Unusual ketoester structures were also observed in the methyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate containing copolymers, suggesting that the acrylate ester group size may be an important controlling factor for copolymerization. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic core–shell nanostructures containing 19F stable isotopic labels located regioselectively within the core domain were prepared by a combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), supramolecular assembly, and condensation‐based crosslinking. Homopolymers and diblock copolymers containing 4‐fluorostyrene and methyl acrylate were prepared by ATRP, hydrolyzed, assembled into micelles, and converted into shell‐crosslinked nanoparticles (SCKs) by covalent stabilization of the acrylic acid residues in the shell. The ATRP‐based polymerizations, producing the homopolymers and diblock copolymers, were initiated by (1‐bromoethyl)benzene in the presence of CuBr metal and employed N,N,N,N,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as the coordinating ligand for controlled polymerizations at 75–90 °C for 1–3 h. Number‐average molecular weights ranged from 2000 to 60,000 Da, and molecular weight distributions, generally less than 1.1 and 1.2, were achieved for the homopolymers and diblock copolymers, respectively. Methyl acrylate conversions as high as 70% were possible, without observable chain–chain coupling reactions or molecular weight distribution broadening, when bromoalkyl‐terminated poly(4‐fluorostyrene) was used as the macroinitiator. Poly(4‐fluorostyrene), incorporated as the second segment in the diblock copolymer synthesis, was initiated from a bromoalkyl‐terminated poly(methyl acrylate) macroinitiator. After hydrolysis of the poly(methyl acrylate) block segments, micelles were formed from the resulting amphiphilic block copolymers in aqueous solutions and were then stabilized by covalent intramicellar crosslinking throughout the poly(acrylic acid) shells to yield SCKs. The SCK nanostructures on solid substrates were visualized by atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Dynamic light scattering was used to probe the effects of crosslinking on the resulting hydrodynamic diameters of nanoparticles in aqueous and buffered solutions. The presence of fluorine atoms in the diblock copolymers and resulting SCK nanostructures allowed for characterization by 19F NMR in addition to 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and IR spectroscopy. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The polymers poly[(2,2‐dimethyl‐1,3‐dioxolane‐4yl) methyl acrylate] (PDMDMA) and four‐armed PDMDMA with well‐defined structures were prepared by the polymerization of (2,2‐dimethyl‐1,3‐dioxolane‐4yl) methyl acrylate (DMDMA) in the presence of an atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiator system. The successive hydrolyses of the polymers obtained produced the corresponding water‐soluble polymers poly(2,3‐dihydroxypropyl acrylate) (PDHPA) and four‐armed PDHPA. The controllable features for the ATRP of DMDMA were studied with kinetic measurements, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and NMR data. With the macroinitiators PDMDMA–Br and four‐armed PDMDMA–Br in combination with CuBr and 2,2′‐bipyridine, the block polymerizations of methyl acrylate (MA) with PDMDMA were carried out to afford the AB diblock copolymer PDMDMA‐b‐MA and the four‐armed block copolymer S{poly[(2,2‐dimethyl‐1,3‐dioxolane‐4yl) methyl acrylate]‐block‐poly(methyl acrylate)}4, respectively. The block copolymers were hydrolyzed in an acidic aqueous solution, and the amphiphilic diblock and four‐armed block copolymers poly(2,3‐dihydroxypropyl acrylate)‐block‐poly(methyl acrylate) were prepared successfully. The structures of these block copolymers were verified with NMR and GPC measurements. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 39: 3062–3072, 2001  相似文献

A series of well‐defined amphiphilic triblock copolymers, poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)‐b‐poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PEG‐b‐PtBA‐b‐PHEMA), were synthesized via successive atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). ATRP of tBA was first initiated by PEG‐Br macroinitiator using CuBr/N,N,N′,N″,N′″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as catalytic system to give PEG‐b‐PtBA diblock copolymer. This copolymer was then used as macroinitiator to initiate ATRP of HEMA, which afforded the target triblock copolymer, PEG‐b‐PtBA‐b‐PHEMA. The critical micelle concentrations of obtained amphiphilic triblock copolymers were determined by fluorescence spectroscopy using N‐phenyl‐1‐naphthylamine as probe. The morphology and size of formed aggregates were investigated by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering, respectively. Finally, an acid‐sensitive PEG‐b‐PtBA‐b‐P(HEMA‐CAD) prodrug via cis‐aconityl linkage between doxorubicin and hydroxyls of triblock copolymers with a high drug loading content up to 38%, was prepared to preliminarily explore the application of triblock copolymer in drug delivery. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel amphiphilic fluorinated ABC‐type triblock copolymers composed of hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) monomethyl ether (MeOPEO), hydrophobic polystyrene (PSt), and hydrophobic/lipophobic poly(perfluorohexylethyl acrylate) (PFHEA) were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA)/CuBr as a catalyst system. The bromide‐terminated diblock copolymers poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐polystyrene (MeOPEO‐b‐PSt‐Br) were prepared by the ATRP of styrene initiated with the macroinitiator MeOPEO‐Br, which was obtained by the esterification of poly(ethylene oxide) monomethyl ether (MeOPEO) with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide. A fluorinated block of poly(perfluorohexylethyl acrylate) (PFHEA) was then introduced into the diblock copolymer by a second ATRP process to synthesize a novel ABC‐type triblock copolymer, poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐polystyrene‐block‐poly(perfluorohexylethyl acrylate) (MeOPEO‐b‐PSt‐b‐PFHEA). These block copolymers were characterized by means of proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Water contact angle measurements revealed that the polymeric coating of the triblock copolymer (MeOPEO‐b‐PSt‐b‐PFHEA) shows more hydrophobic than that of the corresponding diblock copolymer (MeOPEO‐b‐PSt). Bovine serum albumin (BSA) was used as a model protein to evaluate the protein adsorption property and the triblock copolymer coating posseses excellent protein‐resistant character prior to the corresponding diblock copolymer and polydimethylsiloxane. These amphiphilic fluoropolymers can expect to have potential applications for antifouling coatings and antifouling membranes. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. pH‐sensitive polymers can be defined as polyelectrolytes that include in their structure weak acidic or basic groups that either accept or release protons in response to a change in the environmental pH. This work summarizes the design, synthesis, and potential applications of pH‐responsive fluorescent copolymers in the biomedical field. This was achieved using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of tert‐butyl acrylate using a CuBr/N,N,N′,N″N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine catalyst system in conjunction with an alkyl bromide as the initiator. Well‐defined macroinitiators based on poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) with narrow molecular weight distributions were obtained by the addition of an appropriate solvent system in order to create a homogeneous catalytic system. The addition of n‐butyl acrylate as a second building block in order to create well‐defined poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)‐b‐poly(n‐butyl acrylate) block copolymers (PtBA‐b‐PnBA) followed by chemical modification of the block copolymers and functionalization with an appropriate fluorescent compound are the basis for the preparation of well‐defined fluorescent pH‐sensitive micelles. Thus, prepared water soluble nanosized pH‐sensitive micelles consisting of hydrophobic poly(n‐butyl acrylate) core and hydrophilic polyacrylic acid shell decorated with an appropriate fluorescent compound determined their potential applications of these systems in the field of biomedicine as biosensors, controlled drug delivery systems, and so on. In this respect, the cell viability and internalization of the polymer micelles were studied.  相似文献

A series of polyacrylate‐polystyrene‐polyisobutylene‐polystyrene‐polyacrylate (X‐PS‐PIB‐PS‐X) pentablock terpolymers (X=poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA), poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA), or poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)) was prepared from poly (styrene‐b‐isobutylene‐b‐styrene) (PS‐PIB‐PS) block copolymers (BCPs) using either a Cu(I)Cl/1,1,4,7,7‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) or Cu(I)Cl/tris[2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine (Me6TREN) catalyst system. The PS‐PIB‐PS BCPs were prepared by quasiliving carbocationic polymerization of isobutylene using a difunctional initiator, followed by the sequential addition of styrene, and were used as macroinitiators for the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl acrylate (MA), n‐butyl acrylate (BA), or methyl methacrylate (MMA). The ATRP of MA and BA proceeded in a controlled fashion using either a Cu(I)Cl/PMDETA or Cu(I)Cl/Me6TREN catalyst system, as evidenced by a linear increase in molecular weight with conversion and low PDIs. The polymerization of MMA was less controlled. 1H‐NMR spectroscopy was used to elucidate pentablock copolymer structure and composition. The thermal stabilities of the pentablock copolymers were slightly less than the PS‐PIB‐PS macroinitiators due to the presence of polyacrylate or polymethacrylate outer block segments. DSC analysis of the pentablock copolymers showed a plurality of glass transition temperatures, indicating a phase separated material.  相似文献

A series of well‐defined double hydrophilic double‐grafted copolymers, consisting of polyacrylate backbone, hydrophilic poly(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) and poly(ethylene glycol) side chains, were synthesized by successive atom transfer radical polymerization. The backbone, poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate] (PPEGMEA) comb copolymer, was firstly prepared by ATRP of PEGMEA macromonomer via the grafting‐through route followed by reacting with lithium diisopropylamide and 2‐bromopropionyl chloride to give PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator of ATRP. Finally, poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate]‐g‐poly(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) graft copolymers were synthesized by ATRP of 2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate using PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator via the grafting‐from route. Poly(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) side chains were connected to polyacrylate backbone through stable C? C bonds instead of ester connections, which is tolerant of both acidic and basic environment. The molecular weights of both backbone and side chains were controllable and the molecular weight distributions kept relatively narrow (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.39). The results of fluorescence spectroscopy, dynamic laser light scattering and transmission electron microscopy showed this double hydrophilic copolymer was stimuli‐responsive to both pH and salinity. It can aggregate to form reversible micelles in basic surroundings which can be conveniently dissociated with the addition of salt at room temperature. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(oxyethylene)s terminated at both ends with 2‐bromopropionate end‐groups were prepared and characterized by means of MALDI TOF mass spectrometry. It was shown, that atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate with a poly(oxyethylene) macroinitiator in bulk proceeds with low initiation efficiency while polymerization of tert‐butyl acrylate proceeds with practically quantitative initiation, leading to ABA block copolymers. Originally formed tert‐butyl acrylate blocks contain terminal bromine, as expected for the ATRP mechanism. MALDI TOF analysis indicates, however, that in the later stages of polymerization side reactions lead to elimination of terminal bromine.  相似文献

In this research, poly(methyl methacrylate)‐b‐poly(butyl acrylate) (PMMA‐b‐PBA) block copolymers were prepared by 1,1‐diphenylethene (DPE) controlled radical polymerization in homogeneous and miniemulsion systems. First, monomer methyl methacrylate (MMA), initiator 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) and a control agent DPE were bulk polymerized to form the DPE‐containing PMMA macroinitiator. Then the DPE‐containing PMMA was heated in the presence of a second monomer BA, the block copolymer was synthesized successfully. The effects of solvent and polymerization methods (homogeneous polymerization or miniemulsion polymerization) on the reaction rate, controlled living character, molecular weight (Mn) and molecular weight distribution (PDI) of polymers throughout the polymerization were studied and discussed. The results showed that, increasing the amounts of solvent reduced the reaction rate and viscosity of the polymerization system. It allowed more activation–deactivation cycles to occur at a given conversion thus better controlled living character and narrower molecular weight distribution of polymers were demonstrated throughout the polymerization. Furthermore, the polymerization carried out in miniemulsion system exhibited higher reaction rate and better controlled living character than those in homogeneous system. It was attributed to the compartmentalization of growing radicals and the enhanced deactivation reaction of DPE controlled radical polymerization in miniemulsified droplets. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined double hydrophilic graft copolymers, consisting of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐b‐poly(ethyl acrylate) (PNIPAM‐b‐PEA) backbone and poly(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDEA) side chains, were synthesized by successive atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The backbone was firstly prepared by sequential ATRP of N‐isopropylacrylamide and 2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate at 25 °C using CuCl/tris(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl)amine as catalytic system. The obtained diblock copolymer was transformed into macroinitiator by reacting with 2‐chloropropionyl chloride. Next, grafting‐from strategy was employed for the synthesis of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐b‐[poly(ethyl acrylate)‐g‐poly(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)] (PNIPAM‐b‐(PEA‐g‐PDEA)) double hydrophilic graft copolymer. ATRP of 2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate was initiated by the macroinitiator at 40 °C using CuCl/hexamethyldiethylenetriamine as catalytic system. The molecular weight distributions of double hydrophilic graft copolymers kept narrow. Thermo‐ and pH‐responsive micellization behaviors were investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy, 1H NMR, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy. Unimolecular micelles with PNIPAM‐core formed in acidic environment (pH = 2) with elevated temperature (≥32 °C); whereas, the aggregates turned into vesicles in basic surroundings (pH ≥ 7.2) at room temperature. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined double hydrophilic graft copolymers containing poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate] (PPEGMEA) backbone and poly[poly(ethylene glycol) ethyl ether methacrylate] (PPEGEEMA) side chains were synthesized by the combination of single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The backbone was first prepared by SET‐LRP of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate macromonomer using CuBr/tris(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl)amine as catalytic system. The obtained comb copolymer was treated with lithium diisopropylamide and 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide to give PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator. Finally, PPEGMEA‐g‐PPEGEEMA graft copolymers were synthesized by ATRP of poly(ethylene glycol) ethyl ether methacrylate macromonomer using PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator via the grafting‐from route. The molecular weights of both the backbone and the side chains were controllable and the molecular weight distributions kept narrow (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.20). This kind of double hydrophilic copolymer was found to be stimuli‐responsive to both temperature and ion (0.3 M Cl? and SO). © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The syntheses of triblock copolymers by the atom transfer radical polymerization of tert‐butyl and iso‐butyl acrylates as inner blocks with cyclohexyl methacrylate as outer blocks are reported. The living behavior and blocking efficiency of these polymerizations were investigated in each case. The use of difunctional macroinitiators led to ABA triblock copolymers with narrow polydispersities and controlled number‐average molecular weights. These copolymers were prepared from bromo‐terminated macroinitiators of poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) and poly(iso‐butyl acrylate), with copper chloride/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as the catalytic system, at 40 °C in 50% (v/v) toluene solutions. The block copolymers were characterized with size exclusion chromatography and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements were performed to reveal the phase segregation. The glass transition of the inner block was not clearly detected, with the exception of the copolymer synthesized with the longest poly(iso‐butyl acrylate) macroinitiator length. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymer nanoporous materials with periodic cylindrical holes were fabricated from microphase‐separated structure of diblock copolymers consisting of a radiation‐crosslinking polymer and a radiation‐degrading polymer through simultaneous crosslinking and degradation by γ‐irradiation. A polybutadiene‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (PB‐b‐PMMA) diblock copolymer film that self‐assembles into hexagonally packed poly(methyl methacrylate) cylinders in polybutadiene matrix was irradiated with γ‐rays. Solubility test, IR spectroscopy, and TEM and SEM observations for this copolymer film in comparison with a polystyrene‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) diblock copolymer film revealed that poly(methyl methacrylate) domains were removed by γ‐irradiation and succeeding solvent washing to form cylindrical holes within polybutadiene matrix, which was rigidified by radiation crosslinking. Thus, it was demonstrated that nanoporous materials can be prepared by γ‐irradiation, maintaining the original structure of PB‐b‐PMMA diblock copolymer film. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Comb‐shaped graft copolymers with poly(methyl methacrylate) as a handle were synthesized by the macromonomer technique in two steps. First, polytetrahydrofuran acrylate (A‐PTHF), prepared by the living cationic ring‐opening polymerization of tetrahydrofuran, underwent homopolymerization with 1‐(ethoxycarbonyl)prop‐1‐yl dithiobenzoate as an initiator under 60Co γ irradiation at room temperature; Second, the handle of the comb‐shaped copolymers was prepared by the block copolymerization of methyl methacrylate with P(A‐PTHF) as a macroinitiator under 60Co γ irradiation. The two‐step polymerizations were proved to be controlled with the following evidence: the straight line of ln[M]0/[M] versus the polymerization time, the linear increase in the number‐average molecular weight with the conversion, and the relatively narrow molecular weight distribution. The structures of the P(A‐PTHF) and final comb‐shaped copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel amphiphilic star‐block copolymers, star poly(caprolactone)‐block‐poly[(2‐dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] and poly(caprolactone)‐block‐poly(methacrylic acid), with hyperbranched poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA–OH) as a core moiety were synthesized and characterized. The star‐block copolymers were prepared by a combination of ring‐opening polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). First, hyperbranched PHEMA–OH with 18 hydroxyl end groups on average was used as an initiator for the ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone to produce PHEMA–PCL star homopolymers [PHEMA = poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate); PCL = poly(caprolactone)]. Next, the hydroxyl end groups of PHEMA–PCL were converted to 2‐bromoesters, and this gave rise to macroinitiator PHEMA–PCL–Br for ATRP. Then, 2‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate or tert‐butyl methacrylate was polymerized from the macroinitiators, and this afforded the star‐block copolymers PHEMA–PCL–PDMA [PDMA = poly(2‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate)] and PHEMA–PCL–PtBMA [PtBMA = poly(tert‐butyl methacrylate)]. Characterization by gel permeation chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance confirmed the expected molecular structure. The hydrolysis of tert‐butyl ester groups of the poly(tert‐butyl methacrylate) blocks gave the star‐block copolymer PHEMA–PCL–PMAA [PMAA = poly(methacrylic acid)]. These amphiphilic star‐block copolymers could self‐assemble into spherical micelles, as characterized by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Densely grafting copolymers of ethyl cellulose with polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate) were synthesized through atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). First, the residual hydroxyl groups on the ethyl cellulose reacted with 2‐bromoisobutyrylbromide to yield 2‐bromoisobutyryloxy groups, known to be an efficient initiator for ATRP. Subsequently, the functional ethyl cellulose was used as a macroinitiator in the ATRP of methyl methacrylate and styrene in toluene in conjunction with CuBr/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as a catalyst system. The molecular weight of the graft copolymers increased without any trace of the macroinitiator, and the polydispersity was narrow. The molecular weight of the side chains increased with the monomer conversion. A kinetic study indicated that the polymerization was first‐order. The morphology of the densely grafted copolymer in solution was characterized through laser light scattering. The individual densely grafted copolymer molecules were observed through atomic force microscopy, which confirmed the synthesis of the densely grafted copolymer. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
