The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to yield synthesis gas (syngas, CO and H2) has been considered as a promising method to realize the net reduction in CO2 emission. However, it is challenging to balance the CO2RR activity and the CO/H2 ratio. To address this issue, nitrogen-doped carbon supported single-atom catalysts are designed as electrocatalysts to produce syngas from CO2RR. While Co and Ni single-atom catalysts are selective in producing H2 and CO, respectively, electrocatalysts containing both Co and Ni show a high syngas evolution (total current >74 mA cm−2) with CO/H2 ratios (0.23–2.26) that are suitable for typical downstream thermochemical reactions. Density functional theory calculations provide insights into the key intermediates on Co and Ni single-atom configurations for the H2 and CO evolution. The results present a useful case on how non-precious transition metal species can maintain high CO2RR activity with tunable CO/H2 ratios.  相似文献

Cu-based catalysts have shown structural instability during the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). However, studies on monometallic Cu catalysts do not allow a nuanced differentiation between the contribution of the applied potential and the local concentration of CO as the reaction intermediate since both are inevitably linked. We first use bimetallic Ag-core/porous Cu-shell nanoparticles, which utilise nanoconfinement to generate high local CO concentrations at the Ag core at potentials at which the Cu shell is still inactive for the CO2RR. Using operando liquid cell TEM in combination with ex situ TEM, we can unequivocally confirm that the local CO concentration is the main source for the Cu instability. The local CO concentration is then modulated by replacing the Ag-core with a Pd-core which further confirms the role of high local CO concentrations. Product quantification during CO2RR reveals an inherent trade-off between stability, selectivity and activity in both systems.

The stability of bimetallic AgCu and PdCu catalysts for electrochemical CO2RR is investigated using the combination of operando and ex situ TEM. The local CO concentration is identified as the main link between activity, stability and selectivity.  相似文献

ZIF-8 has been rapidly developed as a potential candidate for CO2 capture due to its low density, high surface area, and robust structure. Considering the electron-donating effect of amino functional groups, amino-modification is expected to be an efficient way to improve CO2 adsorption of ZIF-8. In this work, grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation was performed to study the CO2 adsorption isotherm based on ZIF-8, ZIF-8-NH2, and ZIF-8-(NH2)2. ZIF-8 was synthesized and CO2 adsorption isotherms based on ZIF-8 was measured. The experimental surface area, pore volume, and CO2 adsorption isotherm were used to validate the force field. Adsorptive capacity of ZIF-8-NH2, and ZIF-8-(NH2)2 were first estimated. The GCMC simulation results indicated that the order of increasing CO2 capacity of the ZIF-8 in the lower pressure regime is: ZIF-8 < ZIF-8-NH2 < ZIF-8-(NH2)2, and in the high pressure is: ZIF-8 < ZIF-8-(NH2)2 < ZIF-8-NH2. New adsorption sites can be generated with the existence of-NH2 groups. In addition, for non-modified and amino-modified ZIF-8, it was the first time to use density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate their CO2 adsorption sites and CO2 binding energies. The present work indicates that appropriate amine-functionalized can directly enhanced CO2 capacity of ZIF-8.  相似文献

Favoring the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) over the hydrogen evolution reaction and controlling the selectivity towards multicarbon products are currently major scientific challenges in sustainable energy research. It is known that the morphology of the catalyst can modulate catalytic activity and selectivity, yet this remains a relatively underexplored area in electrochemical CO2 reduction. Here, we exploit the material tunability afforded by colloidal chemistry to establish unambiguous structure/property relations between Cu nanocrystals and their behavior as electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction. Our study reveals a non‐monotonic size‐dependence of the selectivity in cube‐shaped copper nanocrystals. Among 24 nm, 44 nm and 63 nm cubes tested, the cubes with 44 nm edge length exhibited the highest selectivity towards CO2RR (80 %) and faradaic efficiency for ethylene (41 %). Statistical analysis of the surface atom density suggests the key role played by edge sites in CO2RR.  相似文献

Efficient CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is one of the important topics in energy and environment field, but improving the electrochemical selectivity of specific product is a great challenge. Herein, we reported a unprecedented two-dimensional (2D) metal?organic framework with CuO4 unit (denoted as Cu-HHTT, HHTT = 9,10-dihydro-9,10-[1,2]benzenoanthracene-2,3,6,7,14,15-hexaol) as the electrocatalyst for CO2RR. Cu-HHTT exhibits high performance for CO2RR to produce CO, namely Faradaic efficiency of 96.6% toward CO with a current density of 18 mA/cm2 at the potential of ?0.6 V vs. RHE. Density function theory reveals that the desorption of CO species exhibits a lower energy barrier than that of hydrogenation of *CO intermediate, resulting in CO as the main product instead of alcohols or hydrocarbons.  相似文献

The electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2RR) is a sustainable approach to mitigate the increased CO2 emissions and simultaneously produce value-added chemicals and fuels. Metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) based single-atom catalysts (SACs) have emerged as promising electrocatalysts for CO2RR with high activity, selectivity, and stability. To design efficient SACs for CO2RR, the key influence factors need to be understood. Here, we summarize recent achievements on M-N-C SACs for CO2RR and highlight the significance of the key constituting factors, metal sites, the coordination environment, and the substrates, for achieving high CO2RR performance. The perspective views and guidelines are provided for the future direction of developing M-N-C SACs as CO2RR catalysts.  相似文献

Zeolite ZIF-8 has been etched with acid to form microporous ZIF-8-E crystals. These were then introduced into a polyethersulfone (PES) membrane matrix to enhance its CO2/N2 separation performance. Open through pores of size about 100 nm formed in the ZIF-8 crystals allow the ingrowth of polyethersulfone chains, ensuring a reduction in the number of nonselective voids, thereby achieving better interaction between ZIF-8-E and PES. As a result, the CO2/N2 separation performance of the ZIF-8-E/PES membrane increased significantly, showing a CO2 permeability of 15.7 Barrer and a CO2/N2 ideal selectivity of 6.5.  相似文献

The reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) into value-added fuels using an electrochemical method has been regarded as a compelling sustainable energy conversion technology. However, high-performance electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) with high formate selectivity and good stability need to be improved. Earth-abundant Bi has been demonstrated to be active for CO2RR to formate. Herein, we fabricated an extremely active and selective bismuth nanosheet (Bi-NSs) assembly via an in situ electrochemical transformation of (BiO)2CO3 nanostructures. The as-prepared material exhibits high activity and selectivity for CO2RR to formate, with nearly 94% faradaic efficiency at −1.03 V (versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE)) and stable selectivity (>90%) in a large potential window ranging from −0.83 to −1.18 V (vs. RHE) and excellent durability during 12 h continuous electrolysis. In addition, the Bi-NSs based CO2RR/methanol oxidation reaction (CO2RR/MOR) electrolytic system for overall CO2 splitting was constructed, evidencing the feasibility of its practical implementation.  相似文献

Nitrogen‐doped carbon materials (N‐Cmat) are emerging as low‐cost metal‐free electrocatalysts for the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), although the activities are still unsatisfactory and the genuine active site is still under debate. We demonstrate that the CO2RR to CO preferentially takes place on pyridinic N rather than pyrrolic N using phthalocyanine (Pc) and porphyrin with well‐defined N‐Cmat configurations as molecular model catalysts. Systematic experiments and theoretic calculations further reveal that the CO2RR performance on pyridinic N can be significantly boosted by electronic modulation from in‐situ‐generated metallic Co nanoparticles. By introducing Co nanoparticles, Co@Pc/C can achieve a Faradaic efficiency of 84 % and CO current density of 28 mA cm?2 at ?0.9 V, which are 18 and 47 times higher than Pc/C without Co, respectively. These findings provide new insights into the CO2RR on N‐Cmat, which may guide the exploration of cost‐effective electrocatalysts for efficient CO2 reduction.  相似文献

We report a straightforward strategy to design efficient N doped porous carbon (NPC) electrocatalyst that has a high concentration of easily accessible active sites for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). The NPC with large amounts of active N (pyridinic and graphitic N) and highly porous structure is prepared by using an oxygen-rich metal–organic framework (Zn-MOF-74) precursor. The amount of active N species can be tuned by optimizing the calcination temperature and time. Owing to the large pore sizes, the active sites are well exposed to electrolyte for CO2RR. The NPC exhibits superior CO2RR activity with a small onset potential of −0.35 V and a high faradaic efficiency (FE) of 98.4 % towards CO at −0.55 V vs. RHE, one of the highest values among NPC-based CO2RR electrocatalysts. This work advances an effective and facile way towards highly active and cost-effective alternatives to noble-metal CO2RR electrocatalysts for practical applications.  相似文献

Upgrading CO2 into multi-carbon (C2+) compounds through the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) offers a practical approach to mitigate atmospheric CO2 while simultaneously producing high value chemicals. The reaction pathways for C2+ production involve multi-step proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) and C−C coupling processes. By increasing the surface coverage of adsorbed protons (*Had) and *CO intermediates, the reaction kinetics of PCET and C−C coupling can be accelerated, thereby promoting C2+ production. However, *Had and *CO are competitively adsorbed intermediates on monocomponent catalysts, making it difficult to break the linear scaling relationship between the adsorption energies of the *Had/*CO intermediate. Recently, tandem catalysts consisting of multicomponents have been developed to improve the surface coverage of *Had or *CO by enhancing water dissociation or CO2-to-CO production on auxiliary sites. In this context, we provide a comprehensive overview of the design principles of tandem catalysts based on reaction pathways for C2+ products. Moreover, the development of cascade CO2RR catalytic systems that integrate CO2RR with downstream catalysis has expanded the range of potential CO2 upgrading products. Therefore, we also discuss recent advancements in cascade CO2RR catalytic systems, highlighting the challenges and perspectives in these systems.  相似文献

Electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) to value-added chemicals is an attractive strategy for greenhouse gas mitigation and carbon recycle. Carbon material is one of most promising electrocatalysts but its product selectivity is limited by few modulating approaches for active sites. Herein, the predominant pyridinic N-B sites (accounting for 80% to all N species) are fabricated in hierarchically porous structure of graphene nanoribbons/amorphous carbon. The graphene nanoribbons and porous structure can accelerate electron and ion/gas transport during CO2RR, respectively. This carbon electrocatalyst exhibits excellent selectivity toward CO2 reduction to CH4 with the faradaic efficiency of 68% at −0.50 V vs. RHE. As demonstrated by density functional theory, a proper adsorbed energy of *CO and *CH2O are generated on the pyridinic N-B site resulting into high CH4 selectivity. Therefore, this study provides a novel method to modulate active sites of carbon-based electrocatalyst to obtain high CH4 selectivity.  相似文献

Metal-doped carbon materials, as one of the most important electrocatalytic catalysts for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), have attracted increasing attention. Herein, a series of Cu cluster embedded highly porous nanofibers have been prepared through the carbonization of electro-spun MOF/PAN nanofibers. The obtained Cu cluster doped porous nanofibers possessed fibrous morphology, high porosity, conductivity, and uniformly dispersed Cu clusters, which could be applied as promising CO2RR catalysts. Specifically, best of them, MCP-500 exhibited high catalytic performance for CO2RR, in which the Faradaic efficiency of CO (FECO) was as high as 98% at ?0.8 V and maintained above 95% after 10 h continuous electrocatalysis. The high performance might be attributed to the synergistic effect of tremendously layered graphene skeleton and uniformly dispersed Cu clusters that could largely promote the electron conductivity, mass transfer and catalytic activity during the electrocatalytic CO2RR process. This attempt will provide a new idea to design highly active CO2RR electrocatalyst.  相似文献

The discovery of high-performance catalysts for the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction ( CO2RR) has faced an enormous challenge for years. The lack of cognition about the surface active structures or centers of catalysts in complex conditions limits the development of advanced catalysts for CO2RR. Recently, the positive valent metal sites (PVMS) are demonstrated as a kind of potential active sites, which can facilitate carbon dioxide (CO2) activation and conversation but are always unstable under reduction potentials. Many advanced technologies in theory and experiment have been utilized to understand and develop excellent catalysts with PVMS for CO2RR. Here, we present an introduction of some typical catalysts with PVMS in CO2RR and give some understanding of the activity and stability for these related catalysts.  相似文献

Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) with renewable electricity is a potentially sustainable method to reduce CO2 emissions. Palladium supported on cost‐effective transition‐metal carbides (TMCs) are studied to reduce the Pd usage and tune the activity and selectivity of the CO2RR to produce synthesis gas, using a combined approach of studying thin films and practical powder catalysts, in situ characterization, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Notably, Pd/TaC exhibits higher CO2RR activity, stability and CO Faradaic efficiency than those of commercial Pd/C while significantly reducing the Pd loading. In situ measurements confirm the transformation of Pd into hydride (PdH) under the CO2RR environment. DFT calculations reveal that the TMC substrates modify the binding energies of key intermediates on supported PdH. This work suggests the prospect of using TMCs as low‐cost and stable substrates to support and modify Pd for enhanced CO2RR activity.  相似文献
