Poly(vinyl alcohol)‐graft‐poly(1,4‐dioxan‐2‐one) (PVA‐g‐PPDO) with designed molecular structure was synthesized by a solid‐state polymerization. The solid‐state copolymerization was preceded by a graft copolymerization of PDO initiated with PVA as a multifunctional initiator, and Sn (Oct)2 as a coininitiator/catalyst in a homogeneous molten state. The polymerization temperature was then decreased and the copolymerization was carried out in a solid state. The products prepared by solid‐state polymerization were characterized by 1H NMR and DSC, and were compared with those synthesized in the homogeneous molten state. The degree of polymerization (Dp), degree of substitution (Ds), yield and the average molecular weight of the graft copolymer with different molecular structure were calculated from the 1H NMR spectra. The results show that the crystallization process during the solid‐state polymerization may suppress the undesirable inter‐ or intramolecular side reactions, then resulting in a controlled molecular structure of PVA‐g‐PPDO. The results of DSC measurement show that the molecular structures determine the thermal behavior of the PVA‐g‐PPDO. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of p‐dioxanone (PDO) under microwave irradiation with triethylaluminum (AlEt3) or tin powder as catalyst was investigated. When the ROP of PDO was catalyzed by AlEt3, the viscosity‐average molecular weight (Mv) of poly(p‐dioxanone) (PPDO) reached 317,000 g mol?1 only in 30 min, and the yield of PPDO achieved 96.0% at 80 °C. Tin powder was successfully used as catalyst for synthesizing PPDO by microwave heating, and PPDO with Mv of 106,000 g mol?1 was obtained at 100 °C in 210 min. Microwave heating accelerated the ROP of PDO catalyzed by AlEt3 or tin powder, compared with the conventional heating method. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Lanthanum isopropoxide (La(OiPr)3) has been synthesized and employed for ring‐opening polymerization of 1,4‐dioxan‐2‐one in bulk as a single‐component initiator. The influences of reaction conditions such as initiator concentration, reaction time, and reaction temperature on the polymerization were investigated. The kinetics indicated that the polymerization is first‐order with respect to the monomer concentration. The Mechanistic investigations according to 1H NMR spectrum analysis demonstrated that the polymerization of PDO proceeded through a coordination‐insertion mechanism with a rupture of the acyl‐oxygen bond of the monomer rather than the alkyl‐oxygen bond cleavage. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel multiblock aromatic–aliphatic copolyester poly(ethylene‐co‐1,6‐hexene terephthalate)‐copoly(1,4‐dioxan‐2‐one) (PEHT‐PPDO) was successfully synthesized via the chain‐extension reaction of dihydroxyl teminated poly(ethylene‐co‐hexane terephthalate) (PEHT‐OH) with dihydroxyl teminated poly(1,4‐dioxan‐2‐one) (PPDO‐OH) prepolymers, using toluene‐2,4‐diisocyanate as a chain extender. To produce PEHT‐OH prepolymer with an appropriate melting point which can match the reaction temperature of PEHT‐OH prepolymer with PPDO‐OH prepolymer, 1,6‐hexanediol was used to disturb the regularity of poly(ethylene terephthalate) segments. The chemical structures and molecular weights of PEHT‐PPDO copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR, FTIR, and GPC. The DSC data showed that PPDO‐OH segments were miscible well with PEHT‐OH segments in amorphous state and that the crystallization of copolyester was predominantly contributed by PPDO segments. The TGA results indicated that the thermal stability of PEHT‐PPDO was improved comparing with PPDO homopolymer. The novel aromatic–aliphatic copolyesters have good mechanical properties and could find applications in the field of biodegradable polymer materials. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Biodegradable poly(p‐dioxanone) (PPDO) was formed on Wang resin surface by surface‐initiated ring‐opening polymerization (SI‐ROP). The SI‐ROP of p‐dioxanone (PDO) was achieved by heating a mixture of Tin(II) bis(2‐ethylhexanoate) [Sn(Oct)2], hydroxyl functionalized Wang resin, and PDO in anhydrous toluene at 80 °C. The resultant polymer‐grafted Wang resin (Wang‐g‐PPDO) was characterized by fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), optical microscopy (OM), and field‐emission scanning electron microscopy (FE‐SEM). The FTIR spectra of Wang‐g‐PPDO show peak characteristic of PPDO at 2943 cm?1 (? C? H stretch), at 1741 cm?1 (? C?O stretch), and 1136 cm?1 (C? O? C stretch) indicating the formation of ester linkage between PPDO and hydroxyl terminated Wang resin. The DSC thermogram show melting peak corresponding to PPDO polymer on Wang resin surface. Thermogravimetric investigation shows increase in PPDO content on the Wang resin surface in terms of percentage of weight loss with increase in reaction time. The OM and SEM photographs clearly show the formation of PPDO polymer on the Wang resin surface without altering the spherical nature of Wang resin bead. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new biodegradable starch graft copolymer, starch‐g‐poly(1,4‐dioxan‐2‐one), was synthesized through the ring‐opening graft polymerization of 1,4‐dioxan‐2‐one onto a starch backbone. The grafting reactions were conducted with various 1,4‐dioxan‐2‐one/starch feed ratios to obtain starch‐g‐poly(1,4‐dioxan‐2‐one) copolymers with various poly(1,4‐dioxan‐2‐one) graft structures. The microstructure of starch‐g‐poly(1,4‐dioxan‐2‐one) was characterized in detail with one‐ and two‐dimensional NMR spectroscopy. The effect of the feed composition on the resulting microstructure of starch‐g‐poly(1,4‐dioxan‐2‐one) was investigated. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(p‐dioxanone) (PPDO)/montmorillonite nanocomposites were prepared through the in situ ring‐opening polymerization of p‐dioxanone (PDO) and three types of montmorillonites (natural sodium montmorillonite, montmorillonite modified by octadecyltrimethyl ammonium chloride, and montmorillonite modified by hydroxyethylhexadecyldimethyl ammonium bromine) in the presence of triethylaluminum. Montmorillonite could accelerate the polymerization of PDO, and the viscosity‐average molecular weight of PPDO could reach 44,900 g/mol in 0.5 h. A nucleating effect of montmorillonite was observed, and the crystallization temperature of PPDO was increased by 18 °C. All three montmorillonites could improve the thermal stability of PPDO and increase the glass‐transition and melting temperatures of PPDO. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To avoid organometallic catalysts in the synthesis of poly(1,5‐dioxepan‐2‐one), the enzymatic ring‐opening polymerization of 1,5‐dioxepan‐2‐one (DXO) was performed with lipase CA (derived from Candida antarctica) as a biocatalyst. A linear relationship between the number‐average molecular weight and monomer conversion was observed, and this suggested that the product molecular weight could be controlled by the stoichiometry of the reactants. The monomer consumption followed a first‐order rate law with respect to the monomer, and no chain termination occurred. Water acted as a chain initiator, but it could cause polymer hydrolysis when it exceeded an optimum level. An initial activation via the heating of the enzyme was sufficient to start the polymerization, as the monomer conversion occurred when samples were left at room temperature after an initial heating at 60 °C. A high lipase content led to a high monomer conversion as well as a high molecular weight. An increase in the monomer conversion and molecular weight was observed when the polymerization temperature was increased from 40 to 80 °C. A further increase in the polymerization temperature led to a decrease in the monomer conversion and molecular weight because of the denaturation of the enzyme at elevated temperatures. The polymerization behavior of DXO under lipase CA catalysis was compared with that of ε‐caprolactone (CL). The rate of monomer conversion of DXO was much faster than that of CL, and this may have been due to differences in their specificity toward lipase CA. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Lipase‐catalyzed ring‐opening bulk polymerizations of 6(S)‐methyl‐morpholine‐2,5‐dione (MMD) were investigated. Selected commercial lipases were screened as catalysts for MMD polymerization at 100 °C. Polymerizations catalyzed with 10 wt % porcine pancreatic lipase type II crude (PPL), lipase from Pseudomonas cepacia, and lipase type VII from Candida rugosa resulted in MMD conversions of about 75% in 3 days and in molecular weights ranging from 8200 to 12,100. Poly(6‐methyl‐morpholine‐2,5‐dione) [poly(MMD)] had a carboxylic acid group at one end and a hydroxyl group at the other end. However, lipase from Mucor javanicus showed lower catalytic activity for the polymerization. During the polymerization, racemization of the lactate residue took place. PPL was selected for further studies. The rate of polymerization increased with increasing PPL concentration under otherwise identical conditions. When the PPL concentration was 5 or 10 wt % with respect to MMD, a conversion of about 70% was reached after 6 days or 1 day, respectively, whereas for a PPL concentration of 1 wt %, the conversion was less than 20% even after 6 days. High concentrations of PPL (10 wt %) resulted in high number‐average molecular weights (<3 days); with a lower concentration of PPL, lower molecular weight poly(MMD) was obtained. The concentration of water was an important factor that controlled not only the conversion but also the molecular weight. With increasing water content, enhanced polymerization rates were achieved, whereas the molecular weight of poly(MMD) decreased. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of amphiphilic biodegradable and biocompatible poly(p‐dioxanone)‐grafted poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) copolymers with well‐defined structure were obtained by a three‐step synthesis based on the “grafting from” concept. The first step (protection step), called the partial silylation of PVA hydroxyl groups, was accomplished by 1,1,1,3,3,3‐hexamethyldisilazane and catalyst chlorotrimethylsilane in dimethyl sulfoxide using THF as cosolvent. The second step was the ring‐opening polymerization of p‐dioxanone (PDO) initiated from the remaining OH groups of the partially silylated PVA. Finally, a deprotection step was followed: the silylether group was deprotected easily under very mild conditions. The synthetic conditions of the first two steps were investigated, and the structures of polymers formed in each step were characterized by various analytical methods. The results showed that the molecular structure of the PVA‐g‐PPDO could be controlled easily by the degree of silylation and the feed ratio. In addition, the micellization of amphiphilic PVA‐g‐PPDO copolymers in water was proved by fluorescence spectra and dynamic light scattering, and the relationship between structural parameters of copolymers and micellar properties was studied preliminarily. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The ring‐opening polymerization of a monomer containing a free carboxylic acid group is reported for the first time. The monomer, 5‐methyl‐5‐carboxyl‐1,3‐dioxan‐2‐one (MCC), was copolymerized with trimethylene carbonate (TMC) in an enzymatic ring‐opening polymerization conducted in bulk at 80 °C. The low‐melting TMC comonomer also solubilized the high‐melting MCC monomer, allowing for solvent‐free polymerizations. Six commercially available lipases were screened, and Candida antarctica lipase‐B (Novozym‐435) and Pseudomonas cepacia lipase were selected to catalyze the copolymerization because of their higher monomer conversions. Higher molecular weight polymers (weight‐average molecular weight = 7800–9200) were prepared when Novozym‐435 was used, with less MCC incorporated into the copolymer than used in the monomer feed. However, Pseudomonas cepacia lipase showed good agreement between the molar feed ratios and the molar composition, but the molecular weights (weight‐average molecular weight = 3600–4800) were lower than those obtained when Novozym‐435 was used. 13C NMR spectral data were used for microstructural analysis, which suggested the formation of random, linear, and pendant carboxylic acid groups containing polycarbonates with hydroxyl groups at both chain ends. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The anionic polymerization of derivatives of 4‐phenyl‐1‐buten‐3‐yne was carried out to investigate the effect of substituents on the polymerization behavior. The polymerization of 4‐(4‐fluorophenyl)‐1‐buten‐3‐yne and 4‐(2‐fluorophenyl)‐1‐buten‐3‐yne in tetrahydrofuran at −78 °C with n‐BuLi/sparteine as an initiator gave polymers consisting of 1,2‐ and 1,4‐polymerized units in quantitative yields with ratios of 80/20 and 88/12, respectively. The molecular weights of the polymers were controlled by the ratio of the monomers to n‐BuLi, and the distribution was relatively narrow (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight < 1.2), supporting the living nature of the polymerization. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Starch and poly(p‐dioxanone) (PPDO) are the natural and synthetic biodegradable and biocompatible polymers, respectively. Their copolymers can find extensive applications in biomedical materials. However, it is very difficult to synthesize starch‐graft‐PPDO copolymers in common organic solvents with very good solubility. In this article, well‐defined polysaccharides‐graft‐poly(p‐dioxanone) (SAn‐PPDO) copolymers were successfully synthesized via the ring‐opening polymerization of p‐dioxanone (PDO) with an acetylated starch (SA) initiator and a Sn(Oct)2 catalyst in bulk. The copolymers were characterized via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography, thermogravimetric analysis (TG), differential scanning calorimetry, and wide angle x‐ray diffraction. The in vitro degradation results showed that the introduction of SA segments into the backbone chains of the copolymers led to an enhancement of the degradation rate, and the degradation rate of SAn‐PPDO increased with the increase of SA wt %. Microspheres with an average volume diameter of 20 μm, which will have potential applications in controlled release of drugs, were successfully prepared by using these new copolymers. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The bulk free‐radical polymerization of 2‐[(N,N‐dialkylamino)methyl]‐1,3‐butadiene with methyl, ethyl, and n‐propyl substituents was studied. The monomers were synthesized via substitution reactions of 2‐bromomethyl‐1,3‐butadiene with the corresponding dialkylamines. For each monomer the effects of the polymerization initiator, initiator concentration, and reaction temperature on the final polymer structure, molecular weight, and glass‐transition temperature (Tg) were examined. Using 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile as the initiator at 75 °C, the resulting polymers displayed a majority of 1,4 microstructures. As the temperature was increased to 100 and 125 °C using t‐butylperacetate and t‐butylhydroperoxide, the percentage of the 3,4 microstructure increased. Differential scanning calorimetry indicated that all of the Tg values were lower than room temperature. The Tg values were higher when the majority of the polymer structure was 1,4 and decreased as the percentage of the 3,4 microstructure increased. The Diels–Alder side products found in the polymer samples were characterized using NMR and gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry methods. The polymerization temperature and initiator concentration were identified as the key factors that influenced the Diels–Alder dimer yield. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Ring‐opening polymerization of 1,4‐dioxan‐2‐one in bulk was initiated by three titanium alkoxides, titanium dichlorodiisopropoxide (TiCl2(OiPr)2), titanium chlorotriisopropoxide (TiCl(OiPr)3), and titanium tetraisopropoxide (Ti(OiPr)4). The results indicate that the polymerization rate increased with number of OiPr groups in the initiator. High conversion of monomer (90%) and high molecular weight (11.9 × 104 g/mol) of resulting polymer can be achieved in only 5 min at 60 °C with Ti(OiPr)4 as an initiator. Analysis on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra suggests the initiating sites for TiCl2(OiPr)2, TiCl(OiPr)3, and Ti(OiPr)4 to be 1.9, 2.6, and 3.8, respectively. Coordination‐insertion mechanism for the polymerization via cleavage of the acyl–oxygen bonds of the monomer was proved by NMR investigation. Kinetic studies indicate that polymerization initiated by Ti(OiPr)4 followed a first‐order kinetics, with an apparent activation energy of 33.7 kJ/mol. It is noteworthy that this value is significantly lower than earlier reported values with other catalysts, namely La(OiPr)3 (50.5 kJ/mol) and Sn(Oct)2 (71.8 kJ/mol), which makes it an attractive catalyst for reactive extrusion polymerization. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An amphiphilic block copolymer of silacyclobutane and methacrylic acid (MAA) was synthesized via a living anionic polymerization of 1,1‐diethylsilacylcobutane (EtSB). Sequential addition of 1,1‐diphenylethylene and t‐butyl methacrylate (tBMA) to living poly(EtSB) in the presence of lithium chloride gave poly(EtSB‐blocktBMA) with narrow molecular weight distributions. The t‐butyl ester groups in the obtained polymer were readily hydrolyzed via heating in 1,4‐dioxane in the presence of concentrated aqueous hydrochloric acid. The block copolymer with a short MAA segment was soluble in chloroform and insoluble in methanol and basic water, whereas the block copolymer with a long MAA segment was soluble in methanol and basic water and insoluble in chloroform. The block polymer (EtSB/tBMA = 45/60) formed a monolayer film on the water surface; this was confirmed by surface pressure measurement. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Novel biodegradable copolymers, poly(1,4‐dioxan‐2‐one‐co‐glycolide) [P(DON‐co‐GA)] containing a high proportion of 1,4‐dioxan‐2‐one (DON), were synthesized by copolymerizations of DON and glycolide (GA) at 120 °C for 16 h using stannous octoate as catalyst. Chemical composition and microstructural variation of the resulting copolymer were investigated by 1H‐ and 13C NMR and thermal properties by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). From the 13C NMR spectra, it was observed that, apart from the expected preponderance of DON sequences, the minor component, GA, was indeed distributed at various points along the copolymer chain rather than incorporated as distinct blocks, which is consistent with a random sequence distribution. This view also was supported by the DSC results, which showed that most copolymers were amorphous except for one with a relatively high fraction of DON. The conclusion that it was a random structure rather than a statistical copolymer is discussed, using the theories about the mechanism of this type of polymerization in current as a reference. P(DON‐co‐GA) films were prepared by casting the copolymer solution in hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) with two concentrations of the polymeric solution (10 and 25 wt %). The in vitro hydrolytic degradation behaviors of these films were studied in phosphate buffer solution (pH = 7.4) at 37 °C and characterized by DSC, scanning electron microscopy, weight loss, and change in inherent viscosity. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Effective cationic addition polymerization of 1,4‐dioxene, a six‐membered cyclic olefin with two oxygen atoms adjacent to the double bond, was performed using a simple metal halide catalyst system in dichloromethane. The polymerization was controlled when the reaction was conducted using GaCl3 in conjunction with an isobutyl vinyl ether–HCl adduct as a cationogen at –78°C to give polymers with predetermined molecular weights and relatively narrow molecular weight distributions. The long‐lived properties of the propagating species were further confirmed by a monomer addition experiment and the analyses of the product polymers by 1H NMR and MALDI–TOF–MS. Although highly clean propagation proceeded, the apparent rate constant changed during the controlled cationic polymerization of 1,4‐dioxene. The reason for the change was discussed based on polymerization results under various conditions. The obtained poly(1,4‐dioxene) exhibited a very high glass transition temperature (Tg) of 217°C and unique solubility. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

Various effects on the coupling selectivity of the oxidative polymerization of 4‐phenoxyphenol catalyzed by (1,4,7‐triisopropyl‐1,4,7‐triazacyclononane)copper(II) halogeno complex [Cu(tacn)X2] are described. With respect to the amount of the catalyst and the nature of the halide ion (X) of Cu(tacn)X2, the coupling selectivity hardly changed. The Cu(tacn) catalyst possessed a turnover number greater than 1860. As the temperature of the reaction and the polarity of the reaction solvent were elevated, the C O coupling at the o‐position increased, but the C C coupling was not involved. For the polymerization in toluene at 80 °C, poly(1,4‐phenylene oxide), obtained as a methanol‐insoluble part, showed the highest number‐average molecular weight of 4000 with a melting point (Tm) of 195 °C. Only a slight change in the coupling selectivity was observed in the presence or absence of hindered amines as the base. Surprisingly, however, the C O selectivity decreased from 100 to 24% with less hindered amines, indicating that the selectivity drastically changed from a preference for C O coupling to a preference for C C coupling. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(lactic acid) is at the forefront of research into alternative replacements to fossil fuel derived polymers, yet preparation of derivatives of this key biodegradable polymer remain challenging. This article explores the use of two derivatives of lactide, each of which features an exocyclic olefin, and their pre‐polymerization modification by olefin cross‐metathesis. Methylenation of lactide with Tebbe's reagent generates a novel 5methylenated lactide monomer, (3S,6S)‐3,6‐dimethyl‐5‐methylene‐1,4‐dioxan‐2‐one, complementing the previously reported 3methylenated (6S)‐3‐methylene‐6‐methyl‐1,4‐dioxan‐2,5‐dione. While ring‐opening of each monomer is not productive, olefin cross‐metathesis can be used to functionalize each of the exocyclic olefins to produce a family of monomers. The ring‐opening polymerization of these new monomers, and their hydrogenated congeners, is facilitated by organo‐ and Lewis‐acid catalysts. Together, they offer a new strategy for derivatizing and altering the properties of poly(lactic acid). © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2018 , 56, 741–748  相似文献
