The induced path transit function J(u,v) in a graph consists of the set of all vertices lying on any induced path between the vertices u and v. A transit function J satisfies monotone axiom if x,yJ(u,v) implies J(x,y)⊆J(u,v). A transit function J is said to satisfy the Peano axiom if, for any u,v,w∈V,x∈J(v,w), yJ(u,x), there is a zJ(u,v) such that yJ(w,z). These two axioms are equivalent for the induced path transit function of a graph. Planar graphs for which the induced path transit function satisfies the monotone axiom are characterized by forbidden induced subgraphs.  相似文献

A shortest path connecting two vertices u and v is called a u-v geodesic. The distance between u and v in a graph G, denoted by dG(u,v), is the number of edges in a u-v geodesic. A graph G with n vertices is panconnected if, for each pair of vertices u,vV(G) and for each integer k with dG(u,v)?k?n-1, there is a path of length k in G that connects u and v. A graph G with n vertices is geodesic-pancyclic if, for each pair of vertices u,vV(G), every u-v geodesic lies on every cycle of length k satisfying max{2dG(u,v),3}?k?n. In this paper, we study sufficient conditions of geodesic-pancyclic graphs. In particular, we show that most of the known sufficient conditions of panconnected graphs can be applied to geodesic-pancyclic graphs.  相似文献

An arc of a graph is an oriented edge and a 3-arc is a 4-tuple (v,u,x,y) of vertices such that both (v,u,x) and (u,x,y) are paths of length two. The 3-arc graph of a given graph G, X(G), is defined to have vertices the arcs of G. Two arcs uv,xy are adjacent in X(G) if and only if (v,u,x,y) is a 3-arc of G. This notion was introduced in recent studies of arc-transitive graphs. In this paper we study diameter and connectivity of 3-arc graphs. In particular, we obtain sharp bounds for the diameter and connectivity of X(G) in terms of the corresponding invariant of G.  相似文献

For a poset P=(X,≤), the upper bound graph (UB-graph) of P is the graph U=(X,EU), where uvEU if and only if uv and there exists mX such that u,vm. For a graph G, the distance two graph DS2(G) is the graph with vertex set V(DS2(G))=V(G) and u,vV(DS2(G)) are adjacent if and only if dG(u,v)=2. Let G be a graph. If u,vV(G), a u-vshortest path of G is a path linking u and v with minimum number of edges. The closed interval I[u,v] consists of all vertices lying in some u-v shortest path of G. For SV(G), the set I[S] is the union of all sets I[u,v] for u,vS. We say that S is a convex set if I[S]=S. The convex hull of S, denoted Ih[S], is the smallest convex set containing S. A set S is a hull set of G if Ih[S]=V(G). The cardinality of a minimum hull set of G is the hull number of G, denoted by hn(G). In this work we prove that deciding whether hn(G)≤k is NP-complete.We also present polynomial-time algorithms for computing hn(G) when G is a unit interval graph, a cograph or a split graph.  相似文献

A graph G is called quasi-claw-free if for any two vertices x and y with distance two there exists a vertex uN(x)∩N(y) such that N[u]⊆N[x]∪N[y]. This concept is a natural extension of the classical claw-free graphs. In this paper, we present two sufficient conditions for vertex pancyclicity in quasi-claw-free graphs, namely, quasilocally connected and almost locally connected graphs. Our results include some well-known results on claw-free graphs as special cases. We also give an affirmative answer to a problem proposed by Ainouche.  相似文献

A graph G is called n-factor-critical if the removal of every set of n vertices results in a~graph with a~1-factor. We prove the following theorem: Let G be a~graph and let x be a~locally n-connected vertex. Let {u,v} be a~pair of vertices in V(G)−{x} such that uvE(G), xNG(u)∩NG(v), and NG(x)⊂NG(u)∪NG(v)∪{u,v}. It is well known that a graph G of order p ≥ 3 is Hamilton-connected if d(u) + d(v) ≥ p + 1 for each pair of nonadjacent vertices u and v. In this paper we consider connected graphs G of order at least 3 for which d(u) + d(v) ≥ |N(u) ∪ N(v) ∪ N(w)| + 1 for any path uwv with uvE(G), where N(x) denote the neighborhood of a vertex x. We prove that a graph G satisfying this condition has the following properties: (a) For each pair of nonadjacent vertices x, y of G and for each integer k, d(x, y) ≤ k ≤ |V(G)| − 1, there is an xy path of length k. (b) For each edge xy of G and for each integer k (excepting maybe one k η {3,4}) there is a cycle of length k containing xy. Consequently G is panconnected (and also edge pancyclic) if and only if each edge of G belongs to a triangle and a quadrangle. Let G be a simple graph without isolated vertices with vertex set V(G) and edge set E(G). A function f:E(G)?{−1,1} is said to be a signed star dominating function on G if ∑eE(v)f(e)≥1 for every vertex v of G, where E(v)={uvE(G)∣uN(v)}. A set {f1,f2,…,fd} of signed star dominating functions on G with the property that for each eE(G), is called a signed star dominating family (of functions) on G. The maximum number of functions in a signed star dominating family on G is the signed star domatic number of G, denoted by dSS(G).In this paper we study the properties of the signed star domatic number dSS(G). A total edge irregular k-labelling ν of a graph G is a labelling of the vertices and edges of G with labels from the set {1,…,k} in such a way that for any two different edges e and f their weights φ(f) and φ(e) are distinct. Here, the weight of an edge g=uv is φ(g)=ν(g)+ν(u)+ν(v), i. e. the sum of the label of g and the labels of vertices u and v. The minimum k for which the graph G has an edge irregular total k-labelling is called the total edge irregularity strength of G.We have determined the exact value of the total edge irregularity strength of complete graphs and complete bipartite graphs.  相似文献

Given a graph G=(V,E), two fixed vertices s,tV and a set F of pairs of vertices (called forbidden pairs), the problem of a path avoiding forbidden pairs is to find a path from s to t that contains at most one vertex from each pair in F. The problem is known to be NP-complete in general and a few restricted versions of the problem are known to be in P. We study the complexity of the problem for directed acyclic graphs with respect to the structure of the forbidden pairs.We write x?y if and only if there exists a path from x to y and we assume, without loss of generality, that for every forbidden pair (x,y)∈F we have x?y. The forbidden pairs have a halving structure if no two pairs (u,v),(x,y)∈F satisfy v?x or v=x and they have a hierarchical structure if no two pairs (u,v),(x,y)∈F satisfy u?x?v?y. We show that the PAFP problem is NP-hard even if the forbidden pairs have the halving structure and we provide a surprisingly simple and efficient algorithm for the PAFP problem with the hierarchical structure.  相似文献

The 3-arc graph of a graph G is defined to have the arcs of G as vertices such that two arcs uv,xy are adjacent if and only if (v,u,x,y) is a 3-arc of G. In this paper, we study the independence, domination and chromatic numbers of 3-arc graphs and obtain sharp lower and upper bounds for them. The distancedG(u,v) between two vertices u and v in a connected graph G is the length of the shortest (u,v) path in G. A (u,v) path of length dG(u,v) is called a (u,v)-geodesic. A set XV is called weakly convex in G if for every two vertices a,bX, exists an (a,b)-geodesic, all of whose vertices belong to X. A set X is convex in G if for all a,bX all vertices from every (a,b)-geodesic belong to X. The weakly convex domination number of a graph G is the minimum cardinality of a weakly convex dominating set of G, while the convex domination number of a graph G is the minimum cardinality of a convex dominating set of G. Let G be a connected graph and SV(G). Then the Steiner distance of S, denoted by dG(S), is the smallest number of edges in a connected subgraph of G containing S. Such a subgraph is necessarily a tree called a Steiner tree for S. The Steiner interval for a set S of vertices in a graph, denoted by I(S) is the union of all vertices that belong to some Steiner tree for S. If S={u,v}, then I(S) is the interval I[u,v] between u and v. A connected graph G is 3-Steiner distance hereditary (3-SDH) if, for every connected induced subgraph H of order at least 3 and every set S of three vertices of H, dH(S)=dG(S). The eccentricity of a vertex v in a connected graph G is defined as e(v)=max{d(v,x)|xV(G)}. A vertex v in a graph G is a contour vertex if for every vertex u adjacent with v, e(u)?e(v). The closure of a set S of vertices, denoted by I[S], is defined to be the union of intervals between pairs of vertices of S taken over all pairs of vertices in S. A set of vertices of a graph G is a geodetic set if its closure is the vertex set of G. The smallest cardinality of a geodetic set of G is called the geodetic number of G and is denoted by g(G). A set S of vertices of a connected graph G is a Steiner geodetic set for G if I(S)=V(G). The smallest cardinality of a Steiner geodetic set of G is called the Steiner geodetic number of G and is denoted by sg(G). We show that the contour vertices of 3-SDH and HHD-free graphs are geodetic sets. For 3-SDH graphs we also show that g(G)?sg(G). An efficient algorithm for finding Steiner intervals in 3-SDH graphs is developed.  相似文献

A graph is called subpancyclic if it contains a cycle of length ? for each ? between 3 and the circumference of the graph. We show that if G is a connected graph on n?146 vertices such that d(u)+d(v)+d(x)+d(y)>(n+10/2) for all four vertices u,v,x,y of any path P=uvxy in G, then the line graph L(G) is subpancyclic, unless G is isomorphic to an exceptional graph. Moreover, we show that this result is best possible, even under the assumption that L(G) is hamiltonian. This improves earlier sufficient conditions by a multiplicative factor rather than an additive constant.  相似文献

The geodesic interval function I of a connected graph allows an axiomatic characterization involving axioms on the function only, without any reference to distance, as was shown by Nebeský [20]. Surprisingly, Nebeský [23] showed that, if no further restrictions are imposed, the induced path function J of a connected graph G does not allow such an axiomatic characterization. Here J(u,v) consists of the set of vertices lying on the induced paths between u and v. This function is a special instance of a transit function. In this paper we address the question what kind of restrictions could be imposed to obtain axiomatic characterizations of J. The function J satisfies betweenness if wJ(u,v), with wu, implies uJ(w,v) and xJ(u,v) implies J(u,x)⊆J(u,v). It is monotone if x,yJ(u,v) implies J(x,y)⊆J(u,v). In the case where we restrict ourselves to functions J that satisfy betweenness, or monotonicity, we are able to provide such axiomatic characterizations of J by transit axioms only. The graphs involved can all be characterized by forbidden subgraphs.  相似文献

An arc of a graph is an oriented edge and a 3-arc is a 4-tuple (v, u, x, y) of vertices such that both (v, u, x) and (u, x, y) are paths of length two. The 3-arc graph of a graph G is defined to have vertices the arcs of G such that two arcs uv, xy are adjacent if and only if (v, u, x, y) is a 3-arc of G. We prove that any connected 3-arc graph is hamiltonian, and all iterative 3-arc graphs of any connected graph of minimum degree at least three are hamiltonian. As a corollary we obtain that any vertex-transitive graph which is isomorphic to the 3-arc graph of a connected arc-transitive graph of degree at least three must be hamiltonian. This confirms the conjecture, for this family of vertex-transitive graphs, that all vertex-transitive graphs with finitely many exceptions are hamiltonian. We also prove that if a graph with at least four vertices is Hamilton-connected, then so are its iterative 3-arc graphs.  相似文献

The study of Hamiltonian graphs began with Dirac’s classic result in 1952. This was followed by that of Ore in 1960. In 1984 Fan generalized both these results with the following result: If G is a 2-connected graph of order n and max{d(u),d(v)}≥n/2 for each pair of vertices u and v with distance d(u,v)=2, then G is Hamiltonian. In 1991 Faudree–Gould–Jacobson–Lesnick proved that if G is a 2-connected graph and |N(u)∪N(v)|+δ(G)≥n for each pair of nonadjacent vertices u,vV(G), then G is Hamiltonian. This paper generalizes the above results when G is 3-connected. We show that if G is a 3-connected graph of order n and max{|N(x)∪N(y)|+d(u),|N(w)∪N(z)|+d(v)}≥n for every choice of vertices x,y,u,w,z,v such that d(x,y)=d(y,u)=d(w,z)=d(z,v)=d(u,v)=2 and where x,y and u are three distinct vertices and w,z and v are also three distinct vertices (and possibly |{x,y}∩{w,z}| is 1 or 2), then G is Hamiltonian.  相似文献

For a simple graph G let NG(u) be the (open) neighborhood of vertex uV(G). Then G is neighborhood anti-Sperner (NAS) if for every u there is a vV(G)?{u} with NG(u)⊆NG(v). And a graph H is neighborhood distinct (ND) if every neighborhood is distinct, i.e., if NH(u)≠NH(v) when uv, for all u and vV(H).In Porter and Yucas [T.D. Porter, J.L. Yucas. Graphs whose vertex-neighborhoods are anti-sperner, Bulletin of the Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications 44 (2005) 69-77] a characterization of regular NAS graphs was given: ‘each regular NAS graph can be obtained from a host graph by replacing vertices by null graphs of appropriate sizes, and then joining these null graphs in a prescribed manner’. We extend this characterization to all NAS graphs, and give algorithms to construct all NAS graphs from host ND graphs. Then we find and classify all connected r-regular NAS graphs for r=0,1,…,6.  相似文献
