Considering an arbitrary undirected n-vertex graph with nonnegative edge weights, we seek to construct a spanning tree minimizing the sum over all vertices of the maximal weights of the incident edges. We find some particular cases of polynomial solvability and show that the minimal span whose edge weights lie in the closed interval [a, b] is a $\left( {2 - \frac{{2a}} {{a + b + 2b/(n - 2)}}} \right) $ -approximate solution, and the problem of constructing a 1.00048-approximate solution is NP-hard. We propose a heuristic polynomial algorithm and perform its a posteriori analysis.  相似文献

Given an undirected, connected network G=(V,E) with weights on the edges, the cut basis problem is asking for a maximal number of linear independent cuts such that the sum of the cut weights is minimized. Surprisingly, this problem has not attained as much attention as another graph theoretic problem closely related to it, namely, the cycle basis problem. We consider two versions of the problem: the unconstrained and the fundamental cut basis problem. For the unconstrained case, where the cuts in the basis can be of an arbitrary kind, the problem can be written as a multiterminal network flow problem, and is thus solvable in strongly polynomial time. In contrast, the fundamental cut basis problem, where all cuts in the basis are obtained by deleting an edge, each from a spanning tree T, is shown to be NP-hard. In this proof, we also show that a tree which induces the minimum fundamental cycle basis is also an optimal solution for the minimum fundamental cut basis problem in unweighted graphs. We present heuristics, integer programming formulations and summarize first experiences with numerical tests.  相似文献

Minimum edge ranking spanning trees of split graphs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Given a graph G, the minimum edge ranking spanning tree problem (MERST) is to find a spanning tree of G whose edge ranking is minimum. However, this problem is known to be NP-hard for general graphs. In this paper, we show that the problem MERST has a polynomial time algorithm for split graphs, which have useful applications in practice. The result is also significant in the sense that this is a first non-trivial graph class for which the problem MERST is found to be polynomially solvable. We also show that the problem MERST for threshold graphs can be solved in linear time, where threshold graphs are known to be split.  相似文献

In this paper we revisit an existing dynamic programming algorithm for finding optimal subtrees in edge weighted trees. This algorithm was sketched by Maffioli in a technical report in 1991. First, we adapt this algorithm for the application to trees that can have both node and edge weights. Second, we extend the algorithm such that it does not only deliver the values of optimal trees, but also the trees themselves. Finally, we use our extended algorithm for developing heuristics for the k-cardinality tree problem in undirected graphs G with node and edge weights. This NP-hard problem consists of finding in the given graph a tree with exactly k edges such that the sum of the node and the edge weights is minimal. In order to show the usefulness of our heuristics we conduct an extensive computational analysis that concerns most of the existing problem instances. Our results show that with growing problem size the proposed heuristics reach the performance of state-of-the-art metaheuristics. Therefore, this study can be seen as a cautious note on the scaling of metaheuristics.  相似文献

As the extension of the previous work by Ciucu and the present authors [M. Ciucu, W.G. Yan, F.J. Zhang, The number of spanning trees of plane graphs with reflective symmetry, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 112 (2005) 105-116], this paper considers the problem of enumeration of spanning trees of weighted graphs with an involution which allows fixed points. We show that if G is a weighted graph with an involution, then the sum of weights of spanning trees of G can be expressed in terms of the product of the sums of weights of spanning trees of two weighted graphs with a smaller size determined by the involution of G. As applications, we enumerate spanning trees of the almost-complete bipartite graph, the almost-complete graph, the Möbius ladder, and the almost-join of two copies of a graph.  相似文献

Paths, trees and matchings under disjunctive constraints   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We study the minimum spanning tree problem, the maximum matching problem and the shortest path problem subject to binary disjunctive constraints: A negative disjunctive constraint states that a certain pair of edges cannot be contained simultaneously in a feasible solution. It is convenient to represent these negative disjunctive constraints in terms of a so-called conflict graph whose vertices correspond to the edges of the underlying graph, and whose edges encode the constraints. We prove that the minimum spanning tree problem is strongly NP-hard, even if every connected component of the conflict graph is a path of length two. On the positive side, this problem is polynomially solvable if every connected component is a single edge (that is, a path of length one). The maximum matching problem is NP-hard for conflict graphs where every connected component is a single edge.Furthermore we will also investigate these graph problems under positive disjunctive constraints: In this setting for certain pairs of edges, a feasible solution must contain at least one edge from every pair. We establish a number of complexity results for these variants including APX-hardness for the shortest path problem.  相似文献

Consider the problem of finding a spanning tree in an edge-weighted connected graph that maximizes the product of its edge weights, where negative edge weights are allowed. We generalize this problem to matroids and give a polynomial time algorithm for its solution.  相似文献

Let k be a non-negative integer. A branch vertex of a tree is a vertex of degree at least three. We show two sufficient conditions for a connected claw-free graph to have a spanning tree with a bounded number of branch vertices: (i) A connected claw-free graph has a spanning tree with at most k branch vertices if its independence number is at most 2k + 2. (ii) A connected claw-free graph of order n has a spanning tree with at most one branch vertex if the degree sum of any five independent vertices is at least n ? 2. These conditions are best possible. A related conjecture also is proposed.  相似文献

Given an undirected and connected graph G, with a non-negative weight on each edge, the Minimum Average Distance (MAD) spanning tree problem is to find a spanning tree of G which minimizes the average distance between pairs of vertices. This network design problem is known to be NP-hard even when the edge-weights are equal. In this paper we make a step towards the proof of a conjecture stated by A.A. Dobrynin, R. Entringer and I. Gutman in 2001, and which says that the binomial tree B n is a MAD spanning tree of the hypercube H n . More precisely, we show that the binomial tree B n is a local optimum with respect to the 1-move heuristic which, starting from a spanning tree T of the hypercube H n , attempts to improve the average distance between pairs of vertices, by adding an edge e of H n -T and removing an edge e′ from the unique cycle created by e. We also present a greedy algorithm which produces good solutions for the MAD spanning tree problem on regular graphs such as the hypercube and the torus.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce the problem of computing a minimum edge ranking spanning tree (MERST); i.e., find a spanning tree of a given graph G whose edge ranking is minimum. Although the minimum edge ranking of a given tree can be computed in polynomial time, we show that problem MERST is NP-hard. Furthermore, we present an approximation algorithm for MERST, which realizes its worst case performance ratio where n is the number of vertices in G and Δ* is the maximum degree of a spanning tree whose maximum degree is minimum. Although the approximation algorithm is a combination of two existing algorithms for the restricted spanning tree problem and for the minimum edge ranking problem of trees, the analysis is based on novel properties of the edge ranking of trees.  相似文献

The maximum or minimum spanning tree problem is a classical combinatorial optimization problem. In this paper, we consider the partial inverse maximum spanning tree problem in which the weight function can only be decreased. Given a graph, an acyclic edge set, and an edge weight function, the goal of this problem is to decrease weights as little as possible such that there exists with respect to function containing the given edge set. If the given edge set has at least two edges, we show that this problem is APX-Hard. If the given edge set contains only one edge, we present a polynomial time algorithm.  相似文献

In this paper, we focus on the directed minimum degree spanning tree problem and the minimum time broadcast problem. Firstly, we propose a polynomial time algorithm for the minimum degree spanning tree problem in directed acyclic graphs. The algorithm starts with an arbitrary spanning tree, and iteratively reduces the number of vertices of maximum degree. We can prove that the algorithm must reduce a vertex of the maximum degree for each phase, and finally result in an optimal tree. The algorithm terminates in O(mnlogn) time, where m and n are the numbers of edges and vertices of the graph, respectively. Moreover, we apply the new algorithm to the minimum time broadcast problem. Two consequences for directed acyclic graphs are: (1) the problem under the vertex-disjoint paths mode can be approximated within a factor of of the optimum in O(mnlogn)-time; (2) the problem under the edge-disjoint paths mode can be approximated within a factor of O(Δ*/logΔ*) of the optimum in O(mnlogn)-time, where Δ* is the minimum k such that there is a spanning tree of the graph with maximum degree k.  相似文献

Given an undirected graph with nonnegative edge lengths and nonnegative vertex weights, the routing requirement of a pair of vertices is assumed to be the product of their weights. The routing cost for a pair of vertices on a given spanning tree is defined as the length of the path between them multiplied by their routing requirement. The optimal product-requirement communication spanning tree is the spanning tree with minimum total routing cost summed over all pairs of vertices. This problem arises in network design and computational biology. For the special case that all vertex weights are identical, it has been shown that the problem is NP-hard and that there is a polynomial time approximation scheme for it. In this paper we show that the generalized problem also admits a polynomial time approximation scheme.  相似文献

Let G be a directed graph with an unknown flow on each edge such that the following flow conservation constraint is maintained: except for sources and sinks, the sum of flows into a node equals the sum of flows going out of a node. Given a noisy measurement of the flow on each edge, the problem we address, which we call the Most Probable Flow Estimation problem (MPFE), is to estimate the most probable assignment of flow for every edge such that the flow conservation constraint is maintained. We provide an algorithm called ΔY-mpfe for solving the MPFE problem when the measurement error is Gaussian (Gaussian-MPFE). The algorithm works in O(∣E∣ + ∣V2) when the underlying undirected graph of G is a 2-connected planar graph, and in O(∣E∣ + ∣V∣) when it is a 2-connected serial-parallel graph or a tree. This result is applicable to any Minimum Cost Flow problem for which the cost function is τe(Xe − μe)2 for edge e where μe and τe are constants, and Xe is the flow on edge e. We show that for all topologies, the Gaussian-MPFE’s precision for each edge is analogous to the equivalent resistance measured in series to this edge in an electrical network built by replacing every edge with a resistor reflecting the measurement’s precision on that edge.  相似文献

We consider the problem of finding a strictly fundamental cycle basis of minimum weight in the cycle space associated with an undirected connected graph G, where a nonnegative weight is assigned to each edge of G and the total weight of a basis is defined as the sum of the weights of all the cycles in the basis. Several heuristics have been proposed to tackle this NP-hard problem, which has some interesting applications. In this paper we show that this problem is APX-hard, even when restricted to unweighted graphs, and hence does not admit a polynomial-time approximation scheme, unless P=NP. Using a recent result on the approximability of lower-stretch spanning trees (Elkin et al. (2005) [7]), we obtain that the problem is approximable within O(log2nloglogn) for arbitrary graphs. We obtain tighter approximability bounds for dense graphs. In particular, the problem restricted to complete graphs admits a polynomial-time approximation scheme.  相似文献

Given a complete graph on~n nodes with metric edge costs, the minimum-costk-hop spanning tree (kHMST) problem asks for a spanning tree of minimum total cost such that the longest root-leaf-path in the tree has at most k edges. We present an algorithm that computes such a tree of total expected cost times that of a minimum-cost k-hop spanning-tree.  相似文献

In this paper, we reformulate the combinatorial core of constructive quantum field theory. We define universal rational combinatorial weights for pairs made of a graph and any of its spanning trees. These weights are simply the percentage of Hepp’s sectors of the graph in which the tree is leading, in the sense of Kruskal’s greedy algorithm. Our main new mathematical result is an integral representation of these weights in terms of the positive matrix appearing in the symmetric “BKAR” Taylor forest formula. Then, we explain how the new constructive technique called Loop Vertex Expansion reshuffles according to these weights the divergent series of the intermediate field representation into a convergent series which is the Borel sum of the ordinary perturbative Feynman’s series.  相似文献

It is shown that a graph with no multiple edges on n vertices, n ≥ 5, with 2(n?2) arcs labelled 1,…,n?1 and 1′,…,n?1′ having at least one spanning tree whose arcs include no pair (j,j?), has at least six of them. This is a result of Rothblum. It is also shown that if the graph has only one multiple edge and that is a double edge, and n ≥ 4, then it has at least four such spanning trees.  相似文献

We consider the minimum diameter spanning tree problem under the reload cost model which has been introduced by Wirth and Steffan [H.-C. Wirth, J. Steffan, Reload cost problems: Minimum diameter spanning tree, Discrete Appl. Math. 113 (2001) 73-85]. In this model an undirected edge-coloured graph G is given, together with a nonnegative symmetrical integer matrix R specifying the costs of changing from a colour to another one. The reload cost of a path in G arises at its internal nodes, when passing from the colour of one incident edge to the colour of the other. We prove that, unless P=NP, the problem of finding a spanning tree of G having a minimum diameter with respect to reload costs, when restricted to graphs with maximum degree 4, cannot be approximated within any constant α<2 if the reload costs are unrestricted, and cannot be approximated within any constant β<5/3 if the reload costs satisfy the triangle inequality. This solves a problem left open by Wirth and Steffan [H.-C. Wirth, J. Steffan, Reload cost problems: minimum diameter spanning tree, Discrete Appl. Math. 113 (2001) 73-85].  相似文献
