This paper is concerned with a special case of the generalized minimum spanning tree problem. The problem is defined on an undirected graph, where the vertex set is partitioned into clusters, and non-negative costs are associated with the edges. The problem is to find a tree of minimum cost containing at least one vertex in each cluster. We consider a geometric case of the problem where the graph is complete, all vertices are situated in the plane, and Euclidean distance defines the edge cost. We prove that the problem is strongly -hard even in the case of a special structure of the clustering called grid clustering. We construct an exact exponential time dynamic programming algorithm and, based on this dynamic programming algorithm, we develop a polynomial time approximation scheme for the problem with grid clustering.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the global routing problem in VLSI design and the multicast routing problem in communication networks. First we propose new and realistic models for both problems. In the global routing problem in VLSI design, we are given a lattice graph and subsets of the vertex set. The goal is to generate trees spanning these vertices in the subsets to minimize a linear combination of overall wirelength (edge length) and the number of bends of trees with respect to edge capacity constraints. In the multicast routing problem in communication networks, a graph is given to represent the network, together with subsets of the vertex set. We are required to find trees to span the given subsets and the overall edge length is minimized with respect to capacity constraints. Both problems are APX-hard. We present the integer linear programming (LP) formulation of both problems and solve the LP relaxations by the fast approximation algorithms for min-max resource-sharing problems in [K. Jansen, H. Zhang, Approximation algorithms for general packing problems and their application to the multicast congestion problem, Math. Programming, to appear, doi:10.1007/s10107-007-0106-8] (which is a generalization of the approximation algorithm proposed by Grigoriadis and Khachiyan [Coordination complexity of parallel price-directive decomposition, Math. Oper. Res. 2 (1996) 321-340]). For the global routing problem, we investigate the particular property of lattice graphs and propose a combinatorial technique to overcome the hardness due to the bend-dependent vertex cost. Finally, we develop asymptotic approximation algorithms for both problems with ratios depending on the best known approximation ratio for the minimum Steiner tree problem. They are the first known theoretical approximation bound results for the problems of minimizing the total costs (including both the edge and the bend costs) while spanning all given subsets of vertices.  相似文献

In the resource constrained shortest path problem we are given a directed graph along with a source node and a destination node, and each arc has a cost and a vector of weights specifying its requirements from a set of resources with finite budget limits. A minimum cost source-destination path is sought such that the total consumption of the arcs from each resource does not exceed its budget limit. In the case of constant number of weight functions we give a fully polynomial time multi-criteria approximation scheme for the problem which returns a source-destination path of cost at most the optimum, however, the path may slightly violate the budget limits. On the negative side, we show that there does not exist a polynomial time multi-criteria approximation scheme for the problem if the number of weight functions is not a constant. The latter result applies to a broad class of problems as well, including the multi-dimensional knapsack, the multi-budgeted spanning tree, the multi-budgeted matroid basis and the multi-budgeted bipartite perfect matching problems.  相似文献

Considering an arbitrary undirected n-vertex graph with nonnegative edge weights, we seek to construct a spanning tree minimizing the sum over all vertices of the maximal weights of the incident edges. We find some particular cases of polynomial solvability and show that the minimal span whose edge weights lie in the closed interval [a, b] is a $\left( {2 - \frac{{2a}} {{a + b + 2b/(n - 2)}}} \right) $ -approximate solution, and the problem of constructing a 1.00048-approximate solution is NP-hard. We propose a heuristic polynomial algorithm and perform its a posteriori analysis.  相似文献

The problem of constructing a spanning tree for a graph G = (V, E) with n vertices whose maximal degree is the smallest among all spanning trees of G is considered. This problem is easily shown to be NP-hard. In the Steiner version of this problem, along with the input graph, a set of distinguished vertices D V is given. A minimum-degree Steiner tree is a tree of minimum degree which spans at least the set D. Iterative polynomial time approximation algorithms for the problems are given. The algorithms compute trees whose maximal degree is at most Δ* + 1, where Δ* is the degree of some optimal tree for the respective problems. Unless P = NP, this is the best bound achievable in polynomial time.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce the problem of computing a minimum edge ranking spanning tree (MERST); i.e., find a spanning tree of a given graph G whose edge ranking is minimum. Although the minimum edge ranking of a given tree can be computed in polynomial time, we show that problem MERST is NP-hard. Furthermore, we present an approximation algorithm for MERST, which realizes its worst case performance ratio where n is the number of vertices in G and Δ* is the maximum degree of a spanning tree whose maximum degree is minimum. Although the approximation algorithm is a combination of two existing algorithms for the restricted spanning tree problem and for the minimum edge ranking problem of trees, the analysis is based on novel properties of the edge ranking of trees.  相似文献

We propose a hybrid GRASP and ILS based heuristic for the diameter constrained minimum spanning tree problem. The latter typically models network design applications where, under a given quality requirement, all vertices must be connected at minimum cost. An adaptation of the one time tree heuristic is used to build feasible diameter constrained spanning trees. Solutions thus obtained are then attempted to be improved through local search. Four different neighborhoods are investigated, in a scheme similar to VND. Upper bounds within 2% of optimality were obtained for problems in two test sets from the literature. Additionally, upper bounds stronger than those previously obtained in the literature are reported for OR-Library instances.  相似文献

Let G be an undirected graph with nonnegative edge lengths. Given two vertices as sources and all vertices as destinations, we investigated the problem how to construct a spanning tree of G such that the sum of distances from sources to destinations is minimum. In the paper, we show the NP-hardness of the problem and present a polynomial time approximation scheme. For any >0, the approximation scheme finds a (1+)-approximation solution in O(n1/+1) time. We also generalize the approximation algorithm to the weighted case for distances that form a metric space.  相似文献

We present an exact algorithm for solving the generalized minimum spanning tree problem (GMST). Given an undirected connected graph and a partition of the graph vertices, this problem requires finding a least-cost subgraph spanning at least one vertex out of every subset. In this paper, the GMST is formulated as a minimum spanning tree problem with side constraints and solved exactly by a branch-and-bound algorithm. Lower bounds are derived by relaxing, in a Lagrangian fashion, complicating constraints to yield a modified minimum cost spanning tree problem. An efficient preprocessing algorithm is implemented to reduce the size of the problem. Computational tests on a large set of randomly generated instances with as many as 250 vertices, 1000 edges, and 25 subsets provide evidence that the proposed solution approach is very effective.  相似文献

In this paper we discuss the complexity and approximability of the minimum corridor connection problem where, given a rectilinear decomposition of a rectilinear polygon into “rooms”, one has to find the minimum length tree along the edges of the decomposition such that every room is incident to a vertex of the tree. We show that the problem is strongly NP-hard and give a subexponential time exact algorithm. For the special case when the room connectivity graph is k-outerplanar the algorithm running time becomes cubic. We develop a polynomial time approximation scheme for the case when all rooms are fat and have nearly the same size. When rooms are fat but are of varying size we give a polynomial time constant factor approximation algorithm.  相似文献

Let G be an edge-colored graph.The monochromatic tree partition problem is to find the minimum number of vertex disjoint monochromatic trees to cover the all vertices of G.In the authors' previous work,it has been proved that the problem is NP-complete and there does not exist any constant factor approximation algorithm for it unless P=NP.In this paper the authors show that for any fixed integer r≥5,if the edges of a graph G are colored by r colors,called an r-edge-colored graph,the problem remains NP-complete.Similar result holds for the monochromatic path(cycle)partition problem.Therefore,to find some classes of interesting graphs for which the problem can be solved in polynomial time seems interesting. A linear time algorithm for the monochromatic path partition problem for edge-colored trees is given.  相似文献

We propose a fully polynomial bicriteria approximation scheme for the constrained spanning tree problem. First, an exact pseudo-polynomial algorithm is developed based on a two-variable extension of the well-known matrix-tree theorem. Given n points in \mathbbRd{\mathbb{R}^d} with nonnegative weights, the inverse 1-median problem with variable coordinates consists in changing the coordinates of the given points at minimum cost such that a prespecified point in \mathbbRd{\mathbb{R}^d} becomes the 1-median. The cost is proportional to the increase or decrease of the corresponding point coordinate. If the distances between points are measured by the rectilinear norm, the inverse 1-median problem is NP{\mathcal{NP}}-hard, but it can be solved in pseudo-polynomial time. Moreover, a fully polynomial time approximation scheme exists in this case. If the point weights are assumed to be equal, the corresponding inverse problem can be reduced to d continuous knapsack problems and is therefore solvable in O(nd) time. In case that the squared Euclidean norm is used, we derive another efficient combinatorial algorithm which solves the problem in O(nd) time. It is also shown that the inverse 1-median problem endowed with the Chebyshev norm in the plane is NP{\mathcal{NP}}-hard. Another pseudo-polynomial algorithm is developed for this case, but it is shown that no fully polynomial time approximation scheme does exist.  相似文献

Let T?=?(V, E) be a tree. A core of T is a path P, for which the sum of the weighted distances from all vertices to this path is minimized. In this paper, we consider the semi-obnoxious case in which the vertices have positive or negative weights. We prove that, when the sum of the weights of vertices is negative, the core must be a single vertex and that, when the sum of the vertices?? weights is zero there exists a core that is a vertex. Morgan and Slater (J Algorithms 1:247?C258, 1980) presented a linear time algorithm to find the core of a tree with only positive weights of vertices. Genetic algorithms and other evolutionary algorithms have been successfully applied to solve constrained minimum spanning tree problems in a variety of communication network design problems. In this paper, we enlarge the application of these types of algorithms by presenting a multi-population hybrid genetic algorithm to another communication design problem. This new problem is modeled through a hop-constrained minimum spanning tree also exhibiting the characteristic of flows. All nodes, except for the root node, have a nonnegative flow requirement. In addition to the fixed charge costs, nonlinear flow dependent costs are also considered. This problem is an extension of the well know NP-hard hop-constrained Minimum Spanning Tree problem and we have termed it hop-constrained minimum cost flow spanning tree problem. The efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed method can be seen from the computational results reported.  相似文献

Given a planar point setS, a triangulation ofS is a maximal set of non-intersecting line segments connecting the points. The minimum weight triangulation problem is to find a triangulation ofS such that the sum of the lengths of the line segments in it is the smallest. No polynomial time algorithm is known to produce the optimal or even a constant approximation of the optimal solution, and it is also unknown whether the problem is NP-hard. In this paper, we propose two improved heuristics, which triangulate a set ofn points in a plane inO(n 3) time and never do worse than the minimum spanning tree triangulation algorithm given by Lingas and the greedy spanning tree triangulation algorithm given by Heath and Pemmaraju. These two algorithms both produce an optimal triangulation if the points are the vertices of a convex polygon, and also do the same in some special cases.  相似文献

A tree t-spanner of a graph G is a spanning subtree T of G in which the distance between every pair of vertices is at most t times their distance in G. Spanner problems have received some attention, mostly in the context of communication networks. It is known that for general unweighted graphs, the problem of deciding the existence of a tree t-spanner can be solved in polynomial time for t=2, while it is NP-hard for any t⩾4; the case t=3 is open, but has been conjectured to be hard. In this paper, we consider tree spanners in planar graphs. We show that even for planar unweighted graphs, it is NP-hard to determine the minimum t for which a tree t-spanner exists. On the other hand, we give a polynomial algorithm for any fixed t that decides for planar unweighted graphs with bounded face length whether there is a tree t-spanner. Furthermore, we prove that it can be decided in polynomial time whether a planar unweighted graph has a tree t-spanner for t=3.  相似文献

A spanning caterpillar in a graph is a tree composed by a path such that all vertices not in the path are leaves. In the Minimum Spanning Caterpillar Problem (MSCP) each edge has two costs: a path cost when it belongs to the path and a connection cost when it is incident to a leaf. The goal is to find a spanning caterpillar minimizing the sum of all path and connection costs. In this paper we formulate the as a minimum Steiner arborescence problem. This reduction is the basis for the development of an efficient branch-and-cut algorithm for the MSCP. We als developed a GRASP heuristic to generate primal bounds. Experiments carried out on instances adapted from TSPLIB 2.1 revealed that the exact algorithm is capable to solve to optimality instances with up to 300 vertices in reasonable time. They also showed that our heuristic yields very high quality solutions.  相似文献

The tree cover (TC) problem is to compute a minimum weight connected edge set, given a connected and edge-weighted graph G, such that its vertex set forms a vertex cover for G. Unlike related problems of vertex cover or edge dominating set, weighted TC is not yet known to be approximable in polynomial time as well as the unweighted version is. Moreover, the best approximation algorithm known so far for weighted TC is far from practical in its efficiency. In this paper we consider a restricted version of weighted TC, as a first step towards better approximation of general TC, where only two edge weights differing by at least a factor of 2 are available. It will be shown that a factor 2 approximation can be attained efficiently (in the complexity of max flow) in this case by a primal-dual method. Even under the limited weights as such, the primal-dual arguments used will be seen to be quite involved, having a nontrivial style of dual assignments as an essential part, unlike the case of uniform weights.  相似文献
