Combined soft X‐ray scattering and reflectometry techniques promise analysis of polymer thin film domain structure and composition without resorting to chemical modification or isotopic labeling. This work explores the capabilities of these techniques in polymer films of poly(styrene‐b‐methyl methacrylate) (P(S‐b‐MMA)). The results demonstrate that the techniques give detailed information on the domain structure of thin films using well‐known modeling procedures. Discrepancies were noted between the X‐ray optical parameters that are needed to best fit the reflectivity data to the model and the expected parameters. The sources of these discrepancies are discussed in terms of instrument configuration parameters, sample attributes, and, particularly, anisotropy of the chromophore parameters. The results show that fitting the soft X‐ray reflectivity data is much more sensitive to these X‐ray optical parameters than the soft X‐ray scattering data. Nevertheless, fits to both types of data yield quantitative measures of the polymer film's lamellar morphology that are consistent with each other and with literature values. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Crystalline thin films of π-conjugated molecules are relevant as the active layers in organic electronic devices. Therefore, materials with enhanced control over the supramolecular arrangement, crystallinity, and thin-film morphology are desirable. Herein, it is reported that hydrogen-bonded substituents serve as additional structure-directing elements that positively affect crystallization, thin-film morphology, and device performance of p-type organic semiconductors. It is observed that a quaterthiophene diacetamide exhibits a denser packing than that of other quaterthiophenes in the single-crystal structure and, as a result, displays enhanced intermolecular electronic interactions. This feature was preserved in crystalline thin films that exhibited a layer-by-layer morphology, with large domain sizes and high internal order. As a result, organic field-effect transistors of these polycrystalline thin films showed mobilities in the range of the best mobility values reported for single-crystalline quaterthiophenes. The use of hydrogen-bonded groups may, thus, provide an avenue for organic semiconducting materials with improved morphology and performance.  相似文献

With the prospect of extremely fast manufacture of very low cost devices, organic electronics prepared by thin film processing techniques that are compatible with roll‐to‐roll (R2R) methods are presently receiving an increasing interest. Several technologies using organic thin films are at the point, where transfer from the laboratory to a more production‐oriented environment is within reach. In this review, we aim at giving an overview of some of the R2R‐compatible techniques that can be used in such a transfer, as well the current status of R2R application within some of the existing research fields such as organic photovoltaics, organic thin film transistors, light‐emitting diodes, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells, and electrochromic devices. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The charge transport properties of thin films prepared from colloidal dispersion of polyaniline stabilized by poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone) (PANI/PVP) have been investigated. The electrical characterization of coplanar device comprising of gold electrodes and PANI/PVP film deposited by spin coating served to gain insights into the contact and bulk resistance. The films prepared from PANI/PVP colloidal dispersion show high stability over a large temperature range. Temperature dependent measurements in the range from 90 to 350 K reveal that the charge transport can be described by a three‐dimensional variable‐range hopping mechanism as the dominant mode in the films. The stability of the films cast from dispersion within a large temperature range opens the possibility of the application as a polymer semiconductor layer in sensors and charge‐transport interlayer in organic solar cells. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report the characterization of Firpic (iridium(III)bis[4,6‐di‐fluorophenyl]‐pyridinato‐N,C2,]picolinate) organic thin film prepared by vacuum deposition to provide a systematic route to organic film quantification. To analyze the characteristics of thin Firpic films on a Si substrate, various techniques such as XPS, Fourier transform infra‐red (FT‐IR) spectrometer, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) are utilized. The Firpic films remain stable without surface morphological or compositional change during deposition and after exposure to X‐ray irradiation or atmospheric environment, for which qualities these films are believed to be an ideal platform as a pure organic thin film. The monotonic increases in FT‐IR and XPS intensities with film thickness are matching well with each other. In particular, from the XPS intensity analysis, the relative atomic sensitivity factors of the present system, electron attenuation length, and molecular density in the organic thin film can be evaluated. A series of novel crown ether‐containing photochromic comb‐shaped liquid crystalline polyacrylates with different macromolecular structure of side groups were synthesized and investigated. Phase behavior, optical and photo‐optical properties of thin spin‐coated films of these polymers were studied. A special attention was paid to a comparative study of the photo‐orientation phenomena occurring in the polymer films under a polarized light action. It was shown that complex formation with the potassium ions results in the decrease in degree of the photoinduced order that can be used for the creation of new materials for sensor devices. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Among all organic semiconductors, pentacene has been shown to have the highest thin film mobility reported to date. The crystalline structure of the first few pentacene layers deposited on a dielectric substrate is strongly dependent on the dielectric surface properties, directly affecting the charge mobility of pentacene thin film OTFTs. Herein, we report that there is a direct correlation between the crystalline structure of the initial submonolayer of a pentacene film and the mobility of the corresponding 60-nm-thick films showing terrace-like structure, as confirmed by 2D grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. Specifically, multilayered pentacene films, grown from single crystal-like faceted islands on HMDS-treated surface, have shown much higher charge mobility (mu = 3.4 +/- 0.5 cm2/Vs) than those with polycrystalline dendritic islands (mu = 0.5 +/- 0.15 cm2/Vs) on OTS-treated ones.  相似文献

The field of organic thin films and devices is progressing at an extremely rapid pace. Organic–metal and organic–organic interfaces play crucial roles in charge injection into, and transport through, these devices. Their electronic structure, chemical properties, and electrical behavior must be fully characterized and understood if the engineering and control of organic devices are to reach the levels obtained for inorganic semiconductor devices. This article provides an extensive, although admittedly nonexhaustive, review of experimental work done in our group on the electronic structure and electrical properties of interfaces between films of π‐conjugated molecular films and metals. It introduces several mechanisms currently believed to affect the formation of metal–organic interface barriers. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis and characterization of a novel polythiophene substituted with a 2′‐pentyloxy‐5′‐(1″′‐oxooctyl) phenyl group (PPOPT) is reported. The bulk transport properties of thin films of PPOPT are investigated by admittance spectroscopy. The dramatic effect of the phenyl side chain on the mobility of positive carriers in films of PPOPT is described. The photophysics of PPOPT in both solution and thin film is also investigated and correlated to substituent‐driven intrachain and interchain arrangements. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The water sorption behavior and the activation energy were investigated for various chemical structure polyimide thin films; BPDA‐PDA, BPDA‐ODA, PMDA‐ODA, and 6FDA‐ODA. The activation energy for the water diffusion varied in the range of 5.53 to 9.27kcal/mol, and was in the increasing order: BPDA‐PDA < BPDA‐ODA < PMDA‐ODA < 6FDA‐ODA. BPDA‐PDA and BPDA‐ODA polyimide films showed relatively well‐ordered morphological structure, which results in relatively low diffusion coefficient and high activation energy. It was found that the diffusion coefficient and the activation energy are significantly related to the in‐plane orientation, crystallinity, and packing order in the polyimide thin films. The morphological structure was predominant factors for the water diffusion coefficient and activation energy in the polyimide thin films. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The electrical conductivity of organic semiconductors can be enhanced by orders of magnitude via doping with strong molecular electron acceptors or donors. Ground‐state integer charge transfer and charge‐transfer complex formation between organic semiconductors and molecular dopants have been suggested as the microscopic mechanisms causing these profound changes in electrical materials properties. Here, we study charge‐transfer interactions between the common molecular p‐dopant 2,3,5,6‐tetrafluoro‐7,7,8,8‐tetracyanoquinodimethane and a systematic series of thiophene‐based copolymers by a combination of spectroscopic techniques and electrical measurements. Subtle variations in chemical structure are seen to significantly impact the nature of the charge‐transfer species and the efficiency of the doping process, underlining the need for a more detailed understanding of the microscopic doping mechanism in organic semiconductors to reliably guide targeted chemical design. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cinnamate‐containing dendrimers have been prepared by peripheral functionalization of the amine groups of a poly(propyleneimine) dendrimer with 4‐methoxycinnamate‐ or 4‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)cinnamate‐derived units and/or 4‐cyanobiphenyl units in different proportions. The synthesis, full characterization in solution, thermal properties and optical properties of the novel monomers, homodendrimers and codendrimers are reported. The composition of the molecular structure of the codendrimers has been elucidated by matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry (MALDI‐TOF MS). These liquid crystalline dendrimers display lamellar SmA mesophases. The codendrimers have been tailored in such a way that the photoactive units and the liquid crystal units absorb in different regions in order to allow better control over the processes induced by light. Linearly polarized UV light irradiation studies performed on thin films of the cinnamate codendrimers show that they are photoresponsive. A photoinduced anisotropy is generated with increasing exposure time, but in‐plane amplification of anisotropy by thermal annealing in the mesophase was not observed. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This review focuses on the structural control in thin films of regioregular poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT), a workhorse among conjugated semiconducting polymers. It highlights the correlation existing between processing conditions and the resulting structures formed in thin films and in solution. Particular emphasis is put on the control of nucleation, crystallinity and orientation. P3HT can generate a large palette of morphologies in thin films including crystalline nanofibrils, spherulites, interconnected semicrystalline morphologies and nanostructured fibers, depending on the elaboration method and on the macromolecular parameters of the polymer. Effective means developed in the recent literature to control orientation of crystalline domains in thin films, especially by using epitaxial crystallization and controlled nucleation conditions are emphasized. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The panchromatic light absorption and excellent charge carrier transport properties in organo lead halide perovskites allowed to achieve an unprecedented power conversion efficiency in excess of 25 % for thin film photovoltaics fabrication. To understand the underlying phenomena, various comprehensive set of optical and electrical techniques have been employed to investigate the charge carrier dynamics in such devices. In this perspective, we aim to summarize the electrical transport properties of perovskite thin films by using (i) impedance spectroscopy (IS), (ii) space charge limited current (SCLC), (iii) field‐effect transistors (FETs) and (iv) time‐of‐flight (TOF) methods. We have deliberated various equivalent circuit used to model the perovskite solar cells by means of IS. The SCLC technique provide vital electrical parameters such as mobility, activation energy, traps density and distribution, carrier concentration, density of states, etc. The TOF technique measures mobility as a primary parameter while the FETs configuration provide a valuable insight into the in‐plane charge transport in perovskites thin films. We believe that these notable understanding will provide insights into charge carrier dynamics in perovskite materials and devices.  相似文献

Organic semiconductors (OSCs) are strong contenders for use in printed, flexible electronics. Although organic electronic materials have been studied for many years, the physics of charge transport is still under investigation. This is in part due to variability resulting from the large variety of molecules that can be synthesized and inconsistency in electrical characterization due to device and processing conditions. Molecular ordering in OSCs is known to alter the charge transport characteristics and attention to long range and short range ordering provides clues as to the nature of transport pathways. Here, we study ordered regioregular poly(3‐hexylthiophene‐2,5‐diyl) films carefully prepared to obtain a set of three samples with incrementally increasing order on identical transistor architectures. Ordering was characterized using a variety of short and long range techniques to probe the coherence and number of crystallites formed during processing, and the correlation between these different measures of order are quantified. We observe three changes in transistor behavior that show a shift from non‐ideal to more textbook‐like characteristics with increasing order: reduction of the contact resistance, shift to field‐independent mobility, and a shift from a diode‐like (S‐shaped) to linear response at low lateral fields. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article reports on the electronic structure at interfaces found in organic semiconductor devices. The studied organic materials are C60 and poly (para‐phenylenevinylene) (PPV)‐like oligomers, and the metals are polycrystalline Au and Ag. To measure the energy levels at these interfaces, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy has been used. It is shown how the energy levels at interfaces deviate from the bulk. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the vacuum levels do not align at the studied interfaces. The misalignment is caused by an electric field at the interface. Several effects are presented that influence the energy alignment at interfaces, such as screening effects, dipole layer formation, charge transfer, and chemical interaction. The combination of interfaces investigated here is similar to interfaces found in polymer light‐emitting diodes and organic bulk heterojunction photovoltaic devices. The result, the misalignment of the vacuum levels, is expected to influence charge‐transfer processes across these interfaces, possibly affecting the electrical characteristics of organic semiconductor devices that contain similar interfaces. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A molecular layer‐by‐layer (mLbL) deposition process is demonstrated to synthesize conformal coatings of crosslinked polyamide. This process controls the rapid reaction of trimesoyl chloride and m‐phenylene diamine, unlike interfacial polymerization techniques which produce rough films and poorly defined network structure. Layer‐by‐layer polyamide films appear structurally similar to interfacially polymerized films with a linear film growth rate of ≈0.9 nm per cycle. Films made by mLbL deposition show a 70‐fold decrease in surface roughness as compared to a commercial, interfacially polymerized polyamide. Surface chemistry could be controlled based on which reaction step was performed last, leading to amine or carboxylic acid rich surfaces. With the ability to control chemical structure throughout the crosslinked network, this technique provides new routes to build polyamide films and improve analysis techniques for commercial applications such as reverse osmosis membranes. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three diisocyanate units having different linearity and planarity on the basis of the arrangement of constituent aromatic rings are used to synthesize three polyurethanes (PUs) and the effects of the molecular structure of the diisocyanate units on phase separated morphologies of PUs have been studied. The linear and planar diisocyanate unit allows good packing of the hard segments in the hard domain by extensive intersegmental hydrogen bonding, and it forms a well ordered, long hard domain. However, the nonlinear and noncoplanar diisocyanate unit shows a lesser degree of hydrogen bonding in the short hard domain. Strong preferential orientation of the rigid/long hard domains inside a macroscopic grain boundary has been observed with the polarizing optical microscope especially for the PU based on the rigid diisocyanate. It was concluded that the molecular structure of the diisocyanate unit in PU plays an important role in determining the interchain interaction, the detailed phase‐separated domain structure, and local domain orientation in each grain boundary. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
