A homogeneous liquid phase reaction between barium chloride (BaCl(2)) and sodium sulphate (Na(2)SO(4)) was conducted in a narrow channel reactor to produce barium sulphate (BaSO(4)) precipitate. The effects of channel dimensions and channel residence times on crystal size, crystal size distribution, nucleation rates, crystal morphology and conversion of reactants were investigated at different levels of reactant supersaturation ratio. Our results indicate that the smallest particle sizes are favoured when supersaturation ratios and channel velocities are high. The minimum average particle diameter observed was approximately 0.2 microm in a channel of hydraulic diameter 0.5 mm and length 20 cm at an initial supersaturation ratio of 4483 (0.1 M), which correspond to conditions giving rise to the highest nucleation rates. It has also been observed that particle size depends on the conversion to product, the smallest particles being formed when conversion lies within the range of 30 to 40%. Conversions in excess of 60% have been reached but there is a detectable limiting effect with increased supersaturation and reduced residence times. Experiments conducted at similar levels of supersaturation under stirred tank conditions showed that particle size was consistently larger and particle size distribution was much broader than that achieved in the narrow channel reactor. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the crystals formed in the narrow channels show that spherical particles dominate in the smallest channels at high velocities whilst coarse, tabular crystals are obtained in the larger channels. Greater tendency to agglomerate is also observed at high supersaturation ratios, after one minute of reaction.  相似文献

The initial stages of vapor condensation of Ge in the presence of a cold Ar atmosphere were studied by molecular-dynamics simulations. The state variables of interest included the densities of condensing vapor and gas, the density of clusters, and the average cluster size, while the temperatures of the vapor and the clusters were separately monitored with time. Three condensation processes were explicitly identified: nucleation, monomeric growth, and cluster aggregation. Our principal finding is that both the average cluster size and the number of clusters scale with the linear dimension of the computation cell, L, and Ln, with the scaling parameter n approximately 4, corresponding to a reaction order of nu approximately 2.33. This small value of n is explained by an unexpected nucleation path involving the formation of Ge dimers via two-body collisions.  相似文献

We performed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of nucleation from vapor at temperatures below the triple point for systems consisting of 10(4)-10(5) Lennard-Jones (L-J) type molecules in order to test nucleation theories at relatively low temperatures. Simulations are performed for a wide range of initial supersaturation ratio (S(0) ? 10-10(8)) and temperature (kT = 0.2-0.6ε), where ε and k are the depth of the L-J potential and the Boltzmann constant, respectively. Clusters are nucleated as supercooled liquid droplets because of their small size. Crystallization of the supercooled liquid nuclei is observed after their growth slows. The classical nucleation theory (CNT) significantly underestimates the nucleation rates (or the number density of critical clusters) in the low-T region. The semi-phenomenological (SP) model, which corrects the CNT prediction of the formation energy of clusters using the second virial coefficient of a vapor, reproduces the nucleation rate and the cluster size distributions with good accuracy in the low-T region, as well as in the higher-T cases considered in our previous study. The sticking probability of vapor molecules onto the clusters is also obtained in the present MD simulations. Using the obtained values of sticking probability in the SP model, we can further refine the accuracy of the SP model.  相似文献

The homogeneous nucleation of bismuth supersaturated vapor is studied in a laminar flow quartz tube nucleation chamber. The concentration, size, and morphology of outcoming aerosol particles are analyzed by a transmission electron microscope (TEM) and an automatic diffusion battery (ADB). The wall deposit morphology is studied by scanning electron microscopy. The rate of wall deposition is measured by the light absorption technique and direct weighting of the wall deposits. The confines of the nucleation region are determined in the "supersaturation cut-off" measurements inserting a metal grid into the nucleation zone and monitoring the outlet aerosol concentration response. Using the above experimental techniques, the nucleation rate, supersaturation, and nucleation temperature are measured. The surface tension of the critical nucleus and the radius of the surface of tension are determined from the measured nucleation parameters. To this aim an analytical formula for the nucleation rate is used, derived from author's previous papers based on the Gibbs formula for the work of formation of critical nucleus and the translation-rotation correction. A more accurate approach is also applied to determine the surface tension of critical drop from the experimentally measured bismuth mass flow, temperature profiles, ADB, and TEM data solving an inverse problem by numerical simulation. The simulation of the vapor to particles conversion is carried out in the framework of the explicit finite difference scheme accounting the nucleation, vapor to particles and vapor to wall deposition, and particle to wall deposition, coagulation. The nucleation rate is determined from simulations to be in the range of 10(9)-10(11) cm(-3) s(-1) for the supersaturation of Bi(2) dimers being 10(17)-10(7) and the nucleation temperature 330-570 K, respectively. The surface tension σ(S) of the bismuth critical nucleus is found to be in the range of 455-487 mN/m for the radius of the surface of tension from 0.36 to 0.48 nm. The function σ(S) changes weakly with the radius of critical nucleus. The value of σ(S) is from 14% to 24% higher than the surface tension of a flat surface.  相似文献

The vapor-phase synthesis of ultrafine powders in reactive thermal plasma systems is studied. A mathematical model is developed to determine the effect of quenching conditions on the size characteristics of powders produced. The particle nucleation is considered to be due to both condensation of product vapor and surface reaction between adsorbed reactant species. The particle growth is considered to be exclusively due to further condensation of product vapor. Numerical predictions on powder formation are explored through a case study for the synthesis of zinc oxide powders from zinc vapor and oxygen carried in argon gas. The results of the present srudy indicate that the size characteristics of plasma-produced powders can be significantly enhanced by gradual, regulated quenching, as opposed to the rapid quenching conventionally used in the past. The results further indicate that distribution of the quench gas along the reactor provides an effective means to accomplish the much desired control over the powder properties.  相似文献

The heterogeneous chemistry of gas-phase acetic acid with CaCO(3)(calcite) aerosol was studied under varying conditions of relative humidity (RH) in an environmental reaction chamber. Infrared spectroscopy showed the loss of gas-phase reactant and the appearance of a gaseous product species, CO(2). The acetic acid is observed to adsorb onto the calcite aerosol through both a fast and a slow uptake channel. While the fast channel is relatively independent of RH, the slow channel exhibits enhanced uptake and reaction as the RH is increased. In additional experiments, the calcite aerosol was exposed to both nitric and acetic acids in the presence of water vapor. The rapid conversion of the particulate carbonate to nitrate and subsequent deliquescence significantly enhances the uptake and reaction of acetic acid. These results suggest a possible mechanism for observed correlations between particulate nitrate and organic acids in the atmosphere. Calcium rich mineral dust may be an important sink for simple organic acids.  相似文献

We report a comprehensive Monte Carlo (MC) simulation study of the vapor-to-droplet transition in Lennard-Jones fluid confined to a spherical container with repulsive walls, which is a case study system to investigate homogeneous nucleation. The focus is made on the application of a modified version of the ghost field method (Vishnyakov, A.; Neimark, A. V. J. Chem. Phys. 2003, 119, 9755) to calculate the nucleation barrier. This method allows one to build up a continuous trajectory of equilibrium states stabilized by the ghost field potential, which connects a reference droplet with a reference vapor state. Two computation schemes are employed for free energy calculations, direct thermodynamic integration along the constructed trajectory and umbrella sampling. The nucleation barriers and the size dependence of the surface tension are reported for droplets containing from 260 to 2000 molecules. The MC simulation study is complemented by a review of the simulation methods applied to computing the nucleation barriers and a detailed analysis of the vapor-to-droplet transition by means of the classical nucleation theory.  相似文献

The initial nucleation of platinum clusters after the reduction of K(2)PtCl(4) in aqueous solution is studied by means of first principles molecular dynamics simulations. A reaction mechanism leading to a Pt dimer is revealed both by gas-phase simulations and by simulations which model the solution environment. The key step of the observed reaction process is the formation of a Pt-Pt bond between a Pt(I) complex and an unreduced Pt(II) complex. In light of this result, we discuss the reduction process leading to the formation of platinum nanoparticles. In the generally accepted model, the nucleation of Pt particles starts only when a critical concentration of Pt(0) atoms is reached. Here, we discuss a complementary mechanism where metal-metal bonds form between Pt complexes in higher oxidation states. This is consistent with a number of experimental results which show that a high concentration of zerovalent atoms is not necessary to start the nucleation.  相似文献

Recent kinetic extensions of the nucleation theorem suggest that the logarithm of the steady-state nucleation rate has strong multilinear dependence on the log concentrations of condensable species present in the vapor phase. A further remarkable result is that the coefficients of this linear dependency provide a direct determination of the molecular content of the critical nucleus itself. Building on these results, the powerful utility of multivariate statistical methods is demonstrated here for physically based parametrization and interpretation of nucleation rate measurements. The new approach is applied to recent measurements by Zhang et al. [Science 304, 1487 (2004)] on the p-toluic acid/sulfuric acid/water ternary vapor system. A linear minimum variance parametrization for nucleation rate dependence on vapor composition, accurate over the range of the measurements, is obtained. Estimates of critical nucleus molecular composition are also presented. These suggest that a single molecule of p-toluic acid present in the critical nucleus is sufficient to trigger a ternary nucleation event. Efforts under way to apply the new methods to analysis of new particle formation in the atmosphere are discussed.  相似文献

In this paper we discuss the condensation of sodium vapor and the formation of a sodium aerosol as it occurs in a gas evaporation condensation chamber. A one-dimensional model describing the vapor transport to the vapor/aerosol interface was employed to determine the onset supersaturation, in which we assume the observed location of the interface is coincident with a nucleation rate maximum. We then present and discuss the resulting nucleation onset supersaturation data within the context of nucleation theory based on the liquid droplet model. Nucleation results appear to be consistent with a cesium vapor-to-liquid nucleation study performed in a thermal diffusion cloud chamber.  相似文献

Condensation of a supersaturated vapor of n-butanol on monodisperse submicrometer particles is investigated in a flow cloud chamber (FCC). The size dependence of critical supersaturation in the range of 20 to 90 nm is experimentally determined. Two types of aerosol, SiO2 and TiO2, are tested. The results show that both aerosols induce heterogeneous nucleation better than perfectly wetted particles. The experimental critical supersaturation is smaller than that predicted by the Fletcher version of Volmer theory of heterogeneous nucleation even with the line tension and surface diffusion taken into account and has a size dependence in qualitative agreement with that theoretically predicted but to a lesser degree. The discrepancy can not be fully accounted for by the effects of line tension and surface diffusion and the existing theory concerning the curvature-dependent physical properties. The law of corresponding states was extended to the heterogeneous nucleation, and a simple correlation was observed. We conclude that the macroscopic theory of heterogeneous nucleation leads to a prediction of critical supersaturation higher than that experimentally measured. The effects of size, charge, and solubility on the condensation of supersaturated n-butanol vapor on monodisperse nanoparticles of D-mannose and L-rhamnose are investigated in a flow cloud chamber. The dependence of the critical supersaturation S(cr) on particle size in the range from 30 to 90 nm is determined experimentally. The results show that the experimental S(cr) decreases with increasing particle size and solubility, qualitatively in agreement with the prediction by the Volmer theory of nucleation on soluble particles and by the Kohler theory, but quantitatively smaller than both theoretical predictions. The condensation of supersaturated vapor on singly positive/negative charged particles with diameters of 30, 60, and 90 nm is examined, and no obvious charge effect and sign preference are observed.  相似文献

We present a new general method to trace back a lot of valuable information from direct simulations and experiments of activated processes. In particular, it allows the reconstruction of the free-energy landscape for an arbitrary reaction coordinate directly from the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of the process. We demonstrate the power of this concept by its application to a molecular dynamics simulation of nucleation of a Lennard-Jones vapor. The same method can be also applied to Brownian dynamics and stochastic simulations.  相似文献

The results of stochastic simulations of growth and evaporation of small clusters in vapor are reported. Energy dependent growth rates are determined from the monomer-cluster collision rate and decay rates are found from a detailed balance, with the equilibrium size and energy distribution of clusters calculated using the capillarity approximation and the equilibrium vapor pressure. These rates are used in simulations of two-dimensional random walks in size and energy space to determine the fraction of clusters in supersaturated vapor of size (i(min)+1) that reach a size i(max). By assuming that clusters of size i(min) are in equilibrium, this fraction can be related to the nonisothermal nucleation rate. The simulated rates show good agreement with the previously published analytical results. In the absence of an inert carrier gas, the nonisothermal nucleation rates are typically between 1% and 5% of the isothermal rates.  相似文献

The nucleation of water vapor on the infinite surface of a silver iodide crystal at 260 K is simulated. Long-range electrostatic and polarization interactions are taken into account by the Ewald method. The free energy and work of equilibrium formation of nuclei are calculated at the molecular level by the method of bicanonical statistical ensemble. It is shown that, at the initial stage, the substrate is completely covered with a water monolayer. The substrate tends to decrease by two orders of magnitude the vapor pressure required to form the critical nucleus of a monomolecular film with a size of 102 molecules, the nucleation rate being increased by tens of orders of magnitude as compared to homogeneous nucleation. The saturation pressure above the adsorbed monomolecular film is 12 times lower than that above the flat ice surface. The free energy at the edges of “spots” per unit length is 1.4 × 10?11 J/m. The critical size of the spot increases with a decrease in vapor pressure as the inverse second power of the logarithm of pressure.  相似文献

I demonstrate photochemically induced crystallization of metastable hen egg-white lysozyme solution by weak UV irradiation for several tens seconds. The most effective irradiation time range is 10–60 s, and in this range the enzyme activity is maintained. Intermediates, neutral radicals at tryptophan residual produced by one-photon absorption, enhance nucleation. When the intermediate is selectively excited by visible light, the intermediate is denatured. At that time the light-induced nucleation is inhibited. This result indicates the intermediate induces nucleation. The radical forms lysozyme dimer that is detected by an SDS-PAGE electrophoresis experiment. An addition of polyethylene glycol (PEG) greatly enhances light-induced nucleation. PEG affects to shorten the intermediate radical lifetime, which suggests that PEG assists to form dimer. We consider that the photochemical dimer behaves as smallest cluster to grow critical nucleus. The smallest cluster formation is the rate determining step in classical nucleation theory due to surface energy disadvantage. The photochemical dimer is formed by a covalent bond, and the nucleation is initiated from stable dimer. The nucleation enhancement is reasonably explained. The present researches results point out the development of a new method for controlling nucleation and growth that could be applied for structural genomics and pharmaceutical industry for instance.  相似文献

The effects of size and charge on the condensation of a supersaturated water vapor on monodisperse nanoparticles of SiO(2) were investigated in a flow cloud chamber. The dependences of the critical supersaturation S(cr) on particle size at diameters of 10, 12, and 15 nm as well as on charge and charge polarity are determined experimentally. A novel electrospray aerosol generator was developed to generate a high concentration of SiO(2) nanoparticles of less than 10 nm by electrospraying silicon tetraethoxide (STE) ethanol solution followed by the thermal decomposition of STE. The effects of liquid flow rate, liquid concentration, flow rate of carrier gas, and liquid conductivity on the particle size distribution and concentration were examined. For charged particles, the nucleation occurs at a critical supersaturation S(cr) lower than that on neutral particles, and the charge effect fades away as particle size increases. The charge effect is stronger than the theoretical predictions. In addition, a sign preference is detected, i.e., water vapor condenses more readily on negatively charged particle, a trend consistent with those observed on ions. However, both effects of charge and charge polarity on S(cr) are stronger than that predicted by Volmer's theory for ion-induced nucleation.  相似文献
