Electrochemically active self-assembled monolayers (SAM) have been successfully fabricated with atomic-scale uniformity on a silicon (Si)(111) surface by immobilizing vinylferrocene (VFC) molecules through Si-C covalent bonds. The reaction of VFC with the hydrogen-terminated Si (H-Si)(111) surface was photochemically promoted by irradiation of visible light on a H-Si(111) substrate immersed in n-decane solution of VFC. We found that aggregation and polymerization of VFC was avoided when n-decane was used as a solvent. Voltammetric quantification revealed that the surface density of ferrocenyl groups was 1.4×10(-10) mol cm(-2), i.e., 11% in substitution rate of Si-H bond. VFC-SAMs were then formed by the optimized preparation method on n-type and p-type Si wafers. VFC-SAM on n-type Si showed positive photo-responsivity, while VFC-SAM on p-type Si showed negative photo-responsivity.  相似文献

A fundamental understanding of multivalency can have a profound influence on bottom-up nanofabrication. For this purpose, three different types of ferrocenyl (Fc) functionalized dendrimers of generations 1-5 with various spacer groups were adsorbed at self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of heptathioether-functionalized beta-cyclodextrin (betaCD) on gold. The dendrimers formed kinetically stable supramolecular assemblies at the betaCD host surface having up to eight multivalent supramolecular interactions, but could be efficiently removed from the host surface by electrochemical oxidation of the Fc end groups. Dendrimer desorption and re-adsorption could be repeated a number of times without significant decomposition of the system. The stoichiometries of the dendrimers at the surface were determined using cyclic voltammetry (CV). These were quantitatively confirmed for the lower generations by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) titrations of the dendrimers to the betaCD SAM. Measuring CV and SPR simultaneously gave crucial mechanistic information on the electrochemically induced desorption of the dendrimers from the host surface. The redox-active dendrimers effectively blocked the host surface for binding other molecules, e.g. adamantyl-functionalized dendrimers, but electrochemically induced release of the blocking layer revealed the host surface to which the adamantyl dendrimers could then bind.  相似文献

The structure of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of undecylenic acid methyl ester (SAM-1) and undec-10-enoic acid 2-bromo-ethyl ester (SAM-2) grown on hydrogen-passivated Si(111) were studied by X-ray reflectivity (XRR), X-ray standing waves (XSW), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), atomic force microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The two different SAMs were grown by immersion of H-Si(111) substrates into the two different concentrated esters. UV irradiation during immersion was used to create Si dangling bond sites that act as initiators of the surface free-radical addition process that leads to film growth. The XRR structural analysis reveals that the molecules of SAM-1 and SAM-2 respectively have area densities corresponding to 50% and 57% of the density of Si(111) surface dangling bonds and produce films with less than 4 angstroms root-mean-square roughness that have layer thicknesses of 12.2 and 13.2 angstroms. Considering the molecular lengths, these thicknesses correspond to a 38 degrees and 23 degrees tilt angle for the respective molecules. For SAM-2/Si(111) samples, XRF analysis reveals a 0.58 monolayer (ML) Br total coverage. Single-crystal Bragg diffraction XSW analysis reveals (unexpectedly) that 0.48 ML of these Br atoms are at a Si(111) lattice position height that is identical to the T1 site that was previously found by XSW analysis for Br adsorbed onto Si(111) from a methanol solution and from ultrahigh vacuum. From the combined XPS, XRR, XRF, and XSW evidence, it is concluded that Br abstraction by reactive surface dangling bonds competes with olefin addition to the surface.  相似文献

The structure of twelve-carbon monolayers on the H-terminated Si(111) surface is investigated by molecular simulation method. The best substitution percent on Si(111) surface obtained via molecular mechanics calculation is equal to 50%, and the (8 ε 8) simulated cell can be used to depict the structure of alkyl monolayer on Si surface. After two-dimensional cell containing alkyl chains and four-layer Si(111) crystal at the substitution 50% is constructed, the densely packed and well-ordered monolayer on Si(111) surface can be shown through energy minimization in the suitable-size simulation cell. These simulation results are in good agreement with the experiments. These conclusions show that molecular simulation can provide otherwise inaccessible mesoscopic information at the molecular level, and can be considered as an adjunct to experiments.  相似文献

The preparation of monolayers on silicon surface is of growing interest for potential applica-tions in biosensor or semiconductor technology[1—5]. The alkyl modified Si(111) surfaces[6—10] can be obtained using the thermal, catalyzed, or photochemical reaction of hydrogen-terminated sili-con with alkenes, Grignard reagents, and so on. At the same time, the monolayer properties on Si(111) surface have been studied by a variety of experimental methods[8—10] such as X-ray photo-electron spect…  相似文献

Chemical force titrations-plots of the adhesive force between an atomic force microscope tip and sample as a function of pH-were acquired on alkyl monolayer-derivatized Si(111) surfaces. Gold-coated AFM tips modified with thioalkanoic acid self-assembled monolayers (SAM) were employed. Alkyl monolayer-derivatized Si(111) surfaces terminated with methyl, carboxyl, and amine groups were produced via hydrosilylation reactions between 1-alkene reagents and H-terminated silicon. The functionalized surfaces were characterized using standard surface science techniques (AFM, FTIR, and XPS). Titration of the methyl-terminated surface using the modified (carboxyl-terminated) atomic force microscope tip resulted in a small pH-independent hydrophobic interaction. Titration of the amine-terminated surface using the same tip resulted in the determination of a surface pKa of 5.8 for the amine from the pH value from the maximum in the force titration curve. A pK(1/2) of 4.3 was determined for the carboxyl-terminated Si(111) in a similar way. These results will be discussed in relation to the modified Si(111) surface chemistry and organic layer structure, as well as with respect to existing results on Au surfaces modified with SAMs bearing the same functional groups.  相似文献

On H-Si(111) surfaces monolayer formation with 1-alkenes results in alkyl monolayers with a Si-C-C linkage, while 1-alkynes yield alkenyl monolayers with a Si-C═C linkage. Recently, considerable structural differences between both types of monolayers were observed, including an increased thickness, improved packing, and higher surface coverage for the alkenyl monolayers. The precise origin thereof could experimentally not be clarified yet. Therefore, octadecyl and octadecenyl monolayers on Si(111) were studied in detail by molecular modeling via PCFF molecular mechanics calculations on periodically repeated slabs of modified surfaces. After energy minimization the packing energies, structural properties, close contacts, and deformations of the Si surfaces of monolayers structures with various substitution percentages and substitution patterns were analyzed. For the octadecyl monolayers all data pointed to a substitution percentage close to 50-55%, which is due the size of the CH(2) groups near the Si surface. This agrees with literature and the experimentally determined coverage of octadecyl monolayers. For the octadecenyl monolayers the minimum in packing energy per chain is calculated around 60% coverage, i.e., close to the experimentally observed value of 65% [Scheres et al. Langmuir 2010, 26, 4790], and this packing energy is less dependent on the substitution percentage than calculated for alkyl layers. Analysis of the chain conformations, close contacts, and Si surface deformation clarifies this, since even at coverages above 60% a relatively low number of close contacts and a negligible deformation of the Si was observed. In order to evaluate the thermodynamic feasibility of the monolayer structures, we estimated the binding energies of 1-alkenes and 1-alkynes to the hydrogen-terminated Si surface at a range of surface coverages by composite high-quality G3 calculations and determined the total energy of monolayer formation by adding the packing energies and the binding energies. It was shown that due to the significantly larger reaction exothermicity of the 1-alkynes, thermodynamically even a substitution percentage as high as 75% is possible for octadecenyl chains. However, because sterically (based on the van der Waals footprint) a coverage of 69% is the maximum for alkyl and alkenyl monolayers, the optimal substitution percentage of octadecenyl monolayers will be presumably close to this latter value, and the experimentally observed 65% is likely close to what is experimentally maximally obtainable with alkenyl monolayers.  相似文献

Self-assembled thiol monolayers bound to single-crystal Au(111) surfaces containing a terminal olefin have been prepared and used to monitor electrochemically the cross-metathesis (CM) between the surface and an olefin-terminated ferrocenyl (Fc) derivative from solution over time. Mixed SAM surfaces were prepared by first adsorbing a diluent for 2 days followed by the olefinic alkanethiol for known adsorption time intervals; three diluents of varying length were used. The oxidation peak areas from the voltammetry show the CM reaction yields a maximum amount of product at 100-150 min. Beyond this time, thiol desorption is apparent and the Fc oxidation peaks diminished. A kinetic simulation of the interfacial reactions involving CM and desorption reactions are described and aided in the interpretation of the voltammetric responses. The length of the diluent and the coverage of surface olefins were important factors in limiting undesirable self-CM reactions on the surface, and a model of the relationship between the diluent and surface concentration of olefin is described. This study shows that attention to monolayer formation and reaction conditions are important parameters when maximizing CM yields on surfaces.  相似文献

Surface modification with oligo(ethylene oxide) functionalized monolayers terminated with reactive headgroups constitutes a powerful strategy to provide specific coupling of biomolecules with simultaneous protection from nonspecific adsorption on surfaces for the preparation of biorecognition interfaces. To date, oligo(ethylene oxide) functionalized monolayer-forming molecules which can be activated for attachment of biomolecules but which can selectively form monolayers onto hydrogen terminated silicon have yet to be developed. Here, self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) containing tetra(ethylene oxide) moieties protected with tert-butyl dimethylsilyl groups were formed by thermal hydrosilylation of alkenes with single-crystal Si(111)-H. The protection group was used to avoid side reactions with the hydride terminated silicon surface. Monolayer formation was carried out using solutions of the alkene in the high-boiling-point solvent 1,3,5-triethylbenzene. The protecting group was removed under very mild acidic conditions to yield a free hydroxyl functionality, a convenient surface moiety for coupling of biological entities via carbamate bond formation. The chemical composition and structure of the monolayers before and after deprotection were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray reflectometry. To demonstrate the utility of this surface for covalent modification, two reagents were compared and contrasted for their ability to activate the surface hydroxyl groups for coupling of free amines, carbonyl diimidazole (CDI), and disuccinimidyl carbonate (DSC). Analysis of XP spectra before and after activation by CDI or DSC, and after subsequent reaction with glycine, provided quantitative information on the extent of activation and overall coupling efficiencies. CDI activated surfaces gave poor coupling yields under various conditions, whereas DSC mediated activation followed by aminolysis at neutral pH was found to be an efficient method for the immobilization of amines on tetra(ethylene oxide) modified surfaces.  相似文献

A new method for the formation of molecular monolayers on silicon surfaces utilizing gas-phase photochemical reactions is reported. Hydrogen-terminated Si(111) surfaces were exposed to various gas-phase molecules (hexene, benzaldehyde, and allylamine) and irradiated with ultraviolet light from a mercury lamp. The surfaces were studied with in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy, and scanning tunneling microscopy. The generation of gas-phase radicals was found to be the initiator for organic monolayer formation via the abstraction of hydrogen from the H/Si(111) surface. Monolayer growth can occur through either a radical chain reaction mechanism or through direct radical attachment to the silicon dangling bonds.  相似文献

The irradiation-induced reduction of electrochemically grafted nitrobenzene films on Si(111) was monitored by high-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy. The experiments were performed using synchrotron soft X-ray irradiation at the BESSY II synchrotron facility. The evolution of different chemical species was monitored as a function of time. Careful fitting of the Si2p, C1s, N1s, and O1s core level spectra allowed us to follow this process in detail and to determine the constants of growth and decay of the specific components. The chemical changes were caused by the X-ray irradiation-induced secondary electron current through the aryl layer. A minor fraction (approximately 25%) of the initial nitro groups was split off and desorbed. The bulk of the NO2 groups was reduced to species in an amino-like chemical environment. A desorption of carbon fragments was not observed, and benzene ring specific shakeup satellites indicated that the aromatic ring structure remained intact. Irradiation-induced line-shape changes suggest a polymerization via -NH- bridges, which were formed after the irradiation-induced N-O bond splitting. A significant part of the released oxygen appeared to contribute to an oxidation of the silicon substrate at the Si(111)/benzene interface. The irradiation-induced aryl layer modification can be exploited for chemical lithography (i.e., a lateral structuring of functionalized silicon surfaces).  相似文献

Up to eight redox-active ferrocenyl units have been incorporated, through the unsaturated ethynyl linkers, on the periphery of a series of cyclic tetrapyrrole derivatives including zinc(II) phthalocyanine and 2,3-naphthalocyanine, and nickel(II) meso-diphenylporphyrin. The synthesis of the former two macrocycles 4 and 7 involves the Sonogashira coupling reaction of ferrocenylethyne with 4,5-dichlorophthalonitrile (1) or 6,7-dibromonaphthalonitrile (5), respectively, followed by a base-promoted cyclization. The meso-bis(ferrocenylethynyl)porphyrin 11 has been prepared from the dibromo analogue 10 also by a palladium-catalyzed coupling reaction. These novel macrocyclic compounds have been spectroscopically and electrochemically characterized. As revealed by cyclic voltammetry, the ferrocenyl moieties appear to be electrochemically independent in these complexes and there is no significant electronic coupling among the iron(II) centers.  相似文献

The growth of ceria (CeO2) films by oxidation of evaporated Ce metal on Si(111) and on CaF2(111) epilayers on Si(111) is compared. By use of XPS, UPS, and LEED, it has been demonstrated that the application of a CaF2 buffer layer between the ceria and Si substrate prevents the formation of an amorphous oxidized Si layer at the interface and permits the growth of a well-defined epitaxial ceria layer of (111) surface orientation. The thermal stability of the CeO2/CaF2/Si(111) interface structure is limited by the solid-state reaction between CaF2 and ceria. This leads to gradual migration of fluorine into the oxide at elevated temperatures to give a solid-state solution of fluorine in the partially reduced oxide. An analysis of the composition observed after extensive annealing in a vacuum suggests that, with initial layers of CaF2 and CeO2 of similar thickness, the ultimate product may be CeOF. The onset of this solid-state reaction can, however, be significantly delayed by annealing under an oxygen atmosphere.  相似文献

The spectroscopic and electrochemical characterizations of electrochemically stable biferrocene-modified Au clusters and chemisorbed biferrocenylalkanethiols on Au(111) surface were studied. The characterizations of biferrocene-modified Au cluster using TEM, UV-vis, and NMR techniques are also reported. Two successive reversible one-electron redox waves were observed for the biferrocenylalkanethiol Au nanoclusters and biferrocenylalkanethiol monolayers on Au(111) surface in the cyclic voltammetry. Furthermore, the positive and negative current peaks for each redox wave occur at almost the same potential, and the peak current increases almost linearly with the sweep rate. Repeat scanning does not change the voltammograms, demonstrating that these monolayers are stable to electrochemical cycling. The coverages of electroactive biferrocene in the monolayers were calculated from the cyclic voltammograms. The standard electron-transfer rate constant was calculated from the splitting between the oxidation and reduction peaks.  相似文献

Using aryldiazonium salts that are air-stable and easily synthesized, we describe here a one-step, room-temperature route to direct covalent bonds between pi-conjugated organic molecules on three material surfaces: Si, GaAs, and Pd. The Si can be in the form of single crystal Si including heavily doped p-type Si, intrinsic Si, heavily doped n-type Si, on Si(111) and Si(100), and on n-type polycrystalline Si. The formation of the aryl-metal or aryl-semiconductor bond attachments was confirmed by corroborating evidence from ellipsometry, reflectance FTIR, XPS, cyclic voltammetry, and AFM analyses of the surface-grafted monolayers. A data-encompassing explanation for the mechanism suggests a diazonium activation by reduction at the open circuit potential, with aryl radical secondary products bonding to the surface. The synthetic details are included for preparing the surface-grafted monolayers and the precursor diazonium salts. This spontaneous diazonium activation reaction offers an attractive route to highly passivating, robust monolayers and multilayers on many surfaces that allow for strong bonds between carbon and surface atoms with molecular species that are near perpendicular to the surface.  相似文献

The electrochemical immobilization of redox active molecule based ionic liquid onto glassy carbon electrode has been performed. 1-Nitrophenylethyl-3-methylferrocenylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide was synthesized and characterized by electrochemistry showing the presence of two redox couples. Following that, the electrochemical reduction of this molecule in acidic media containing sodium nitrite leads to the in situ formation of the corresponding diazonium, in the vicinity of the electrode, and subsequently the grafting of redox based ionic liquid molecule onto the electrode surface. The surface analysis of the attached layer confirms the formation of organic thin film strongly attached to the electrode surface, and evidences the presence of the components of the imidazolium ring, ferrocenyl unit, and TFSI anion. In addition, the modified electrode was electrochemically characterized by following the electrochemical signal of the attached ferrocenyl unit. Finally, the electrochemical reversible wettability of the modified electrode upon oxidation and reduction process was demonstrated.  相似文献

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) can decorate surfaces with `smart′ functional units possessing reversible stimulus-response behavior for optical, thermal, magnetic or redox-chemical stimuli. An independent performance of individual functional groups in such a film is desirable, which can be, in particular, ensured by fairly large lateral separations between tailgroups in the SAM. Adsorbate molecules with multiple attachment points are very promising in this context owing to their large surface footprint, which covers a surface area exceeding the lateral dimensions of the functional groups. To address these design constraints, novel tridentate long-chain tripodal thioether ligands with central adamantine units and a redox-active ferrocenyl tailgroup, 1-[4-(ferrocenylethynyl)phenyl]-3,5,7-tri[(4-n-octylsulfanyl)phenyl]adamantine (T8) and 1-[4-(ferrocenylethynyl)phenyl]-3,5,7-tri[(4-n-dodecylsulfanyl)phenyl]adamantine (T12), were synthesized and used as tripodal adsorbate molecules for the fabrication of redox-active ferrocenyl-terminated SAMs on Au(111). These SAMs were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and sum frequency generation spectroscopy. The data suggest that T8 and T12 form almost contamination-free, well-aligned and fairly densely-packed SAMs on Au(111) with laterally separated ferrocenyl units. The SAMs show a homogeneous binding chemistry, an important requirement for high fidelity SAMs. SFG results indicate lateral interactions between neighboring molecules via the long-chain binding units.  相似文献
