ABSTRACT

For a comprehensive understanding of the PVA/CdS nanocomposite properties, it is essential to select the suitable method for their preparation as well as elucidate the interfacial interactions, which still need support. CdS nanoparticles have been prepared by thermolysis method under the flow of nitrogen. Rietveld refinement of x-ray data shows that all the CdS samples have both cubic and hexagonal structures. Then PVA/CdS films were prepared by ex-situ technique. Samples from PVA/CdS nanocomposite have been irradiated with gamma doses in the range 10–120?kGy. The implanting of CdS NPs into PVA matrix was confirmed by XRD hand in hand with UV–vis and FTIR spectroscopic techniques. UV/VIS absorption spectra confirm the formation of hybridized film CdS/PVA nanocomposite with a refractive index in the range of 1.32–1.48 (at 500?nm). UV/VIS measurements were also used in calculating different optical parameters such as refractive index, extinction coefficient and optical band gap energy. Additionally, Tauc’s relation was used to determine the type of electronic transition. It is found that the gamma irradiation in the dose range 30-90?kGy led to a more compact structure of PVA/CdS nanocomposite and causes proper dispersion of CdS nanoparticles in the PVA matrix. This led to the formation of coordination reaction between OH of PVA and CdS nanoparticles, resulted in an increase in refractive index and the amorphous phase. Also, the gamma irradiation reduces the optical energy gap from 4.53 to 2.19?eV, and accompanied with an increase in the Urbach energy from 2.28 to 4.46?eV, at that dose range which could be attributed to the increase in structural disorder of the irradiated PVA/CdS nanocomposites due to crosslinking. Further, the color intensity ΔE, which is the color difference between the non-irradiated sample and the irradiated ones, was increased, from 0 to 10.8, with increasing the gamma dose, convoyed by an increase in the red and yellow color components.  相似文献

In the current research investigation, polycarbonate/hallyosite nanotubes (PC/HNTs) nanocomposite (NC) films have been successfully fabricated by solution intercalation technique using ultrasound energy in facile way which helps complete exfoliation of the HNTs in the matrix. The effect of Gamma irradiation-induced modifications of PC/HNTs NC have been studied in the dose range 200–500?kGy, irradiated with Co60 source. The NC films have been evaluated by UV–visible spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopic techniques in order to probe the effect of gamma radiation on the structural behaviors. The obtained results have been indicated that as the Gamma irradiation dosage increases from 200 to 500?kGy, phenolic group forms through scissoring of ester link of PC, which may cause PC to degrade and lose their property. At lower dosage (200?kGy), the effect is less and at higher dosage (500?kGy), the effect is significant and at 300 and 400?kGy, the effect is moderate and NC films retained their properties. The irradiation effect is most significant and effective at the higher dosage range. UV–visible spectroscopy shows a noticeable reduction in the energy band gap due to gamma irradiation.  相似文献

The etching conditions of an indigenously prepared thin film of pentaerythritol tetrakis(allyl carbonate) (PETAC) were standardised for the use as a nuclear track detector. The optimum etching times in 6?N NaOH at 70°C for the appearance of fission and alpha tracks recorded in this detector from a 252Cf solid source were found to be 30 min and 1.50?h, respectively. The experimentally determined values for the bulk and track-etch rates for this detector in 6?N NaOH at 70°C were found to be 1.7?±?0.1 and 88.4?±?10.7?µm/h, respectively. From these results, the important track etching properties such as the critical angle of etching, the sensitivity and the fission track registration efficiency were calculated and compared with the commercially available detectors. The activation energy value for bulk etching calculated by applying Arrhenius equation to the bulk etch rates of the detector determined at different etching temperatures was found to be 0.86?±?0.02?eV. This compares very well with the value of about 1.0?eV reported for most commonly used track detectors. The effects of gamma irradiation on this new detector in the dose range of 200–1000?kGy have also been studied using bulk etch rate technique. The activation energy values for bulk etching calculated from bulk etch rates measurements at different temperatures were found to decrease with the increase in gamma dose indicating scission of the detector due to gamma irradiation. The optical band gap of this detector was also determined using UV–visible spectrometry and the value was found to be 4.37?±?0.05?eV.  相似文献

Nanotechnology is one of the world’s most promising new technologies. Pure polycarbonate (PC) and PC–nickel oxide (NiO) nanocomposite films have been deposited using the casting technique. The effects of NiO nanoparticle (NP) concentration (2, 5 and 10?wt%) on the structure and optical properties of PC have been studied. The resultant effect of NiO concentration has been investigated using X-ray diffraction and UV spectroscopy techniques. The results of nanocomposite samples compared to the pristine indicate the proper dispersion of NiO NPs in the PC matrix. Also, the addition of NiO NP to PC with 5% concentration causes a strong intermolecular interaction between NiO and PC, resulted in an increase in refractive index and increase in the amorphous phase. Thus, this sample was chosen to be a subject for further study to investigate the effect of gamma irradiation on its structure and optical properties. Samples from the 5% PC–NiO nanocomposite were irradiated with gamma doses in the range of 20–350?kGy. It is found that the gamma irradiation reduces the optical energy gap that could be attributed to the increase in the structural disorder of the irradiated PC–NiO nanocomposites due to cross-linking. In addition the isotropic character of the nanocomposites has been enhanced, reflected in the increase in refractive index.  相似文献

The present work looks into the structural, chemical, mechanical, optical and thermal modification in ZnO nanoparticle incorporated hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) polymer films, induced by gamma irradiation. The irradiation process was performed in a gamma chamber at room temperature using Cobalt-60 source (average energy of 1.25?MeV) at different doses: 0, 50, 100, 150 and 200?kGy. The modifications in structural, chemical, mechanical, optical and thermal properties, due to gamma irradiation in HPMC/ZnO nanocomposite films, have been studied using wide angle X-ray scattering (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, universal testing machine, ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry and thermogravimetric analysis. It is found that gamma irradiation improves the mechanical and thermal properties of nanocomposite films.  相似文献

The effect of gamma irradiation on hydrothermally synthesized BaTiO3 nanoparticles has been investigated. Gamma irradiation was carried out at room temperature from 0, 50, 100, 150, 200?kGy to a maximum dose up to 250?kGy, source being 60Co gamma radiations. The structure, size and chemical changes of the BaTiO3 were studied using X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR) techniques and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The optical band gap has been computed by UV–Visible spectroscopy data. From the results obtained, it is evident that the gamma irradiation increases the crystallinity, whereas the particle size of BaTiO3 nanoparticles is altered. UV–Visible spectroscopy shows a noticeable change in the energy band gap due to gamma irradiation. Significant changes in anharmonicity constant computed using FTIR data due to irradiation has been observed. SEM shows the size and deviation from uniformity of particles.  相似文献

Samples from polycarbonate (PC) were classified into two main groups. The first group was blended with Abietic acid (Rosin) with different compositions, while the second group was blended with ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer with almost the same composition. A comparative study of the effect of both Rosin and EVA concentration on the thermal stability of PC has been investigated using thermogravimetric analysis. The results show that blending with Rosin causes the dominance of degradation. Samples from PC with 20% Rosin blend were irradiated with gamma at the dose of range 20–300?kGy. The resultant effect of gamma radiation on the structural properties of the 20% Rosin/ 80%PC blend has been investigated using Fourier Transform Infrared FTIR spectroscopy. The results indicate that degradation of the polymer blend dominates, thus increases the creation of hot free radicals that leads to the formation of color centers in PC. In addition, the transmission of the 20% Rosin/80%PC samples as well as color changes was studied. The color intensity ΔE was greatly increased with increasing the gamma dose up to 300?kGy, accompanied by a significant increase in the blue color component.  相似文献

Zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films were sol–gel spin coated on glass substrates, annealed at various temperatures 300 °C, 400 °C and 500 °C and characterized by spectroscopic ellipsometry method. The optical properties of the films such as transmittance, refractive index, extinction coefficient, dielectric constant and optical band gap energy were determined from ellipsometric data recorded over the spectral range of 300–800 nm. The effect of annealing temperature in air on optical properties of the sol–gel derived ZnO thin films was studied. The transmission values of the annealed films were about 65% within the visible range. The optical band gap of the ZnO thin films were measured between 3.25 eV and 3.45 eV. Also the dispersion parameters such as single oscillator energy and dispersive energy were determined from the transmittance graph using the Wemple and DiDomenico model.  相似文献

The structural and optical properties of RF sputtered Nb2O5 thin films are studied before and after gamma irradiation. The films are subjected to structural and surface morphological analyses by using X-ray (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscope techniques. In the wavelength range of 300–2000 nm, the optical parameters for amorphous and crystalline Nb2O5 thin films are estimated at differently exposed γ-irradiation doses (0, 50, 100 and 200 kGy). The optical constants, such as optical energy band gap, absorption coefficient, refractive index and oscillators parameters of amorphous and crystalline Nb2O5 thin films are calculated. The optical band gaps of γ-irradiated amorphous and crystalline Nb2O5 thin films are determined. In the non-absorbing region, the real part of the refractive index of amorphous and crystalline Nb2O5 thin films slightly increases with the increase in the exposed γ-irradiation dose.  相似文献

The optical absorption and mechanical yielding energy has been studied under exposure of γ-radiation. Two crystalline polymers, polypropylene (PP) and Teflon, were irradiated with a 60Co source, with doses ranging up to 6 kGy. The observed optical energy gap (E opt) and energy gap tail (Δ E) for irradiated thin sheets of PP were determined from the measured absorption spectra. The average values of (E opt) and (Δ E) were 5.85 and 0.5 eV, respectively. There is no detectable change in the optical energy gap under the applied γ-ray doses. On the other hand, the effect of γ-radiation on mechanical properties of irradiated Teflon was much pronounced. It was found that Young’s modulus and yield stress increase with radiation dose, whereas the yield strain decreases. The calculated yield energy increases with radiation dose from 0.27 to 0.35 Mpa per unit volume. The enhancement in the mechanical properties of irradiated Teflon was attributed mainly to crosslinking process and other structural changes occuring during irradiation with γ-rays.  相似文献

The present study focuses on the effects of gamma irradiation on structural and optical properties of polycrystalline Ga10Se85Sn5 thin films with a thickness of ~300?nm deposited by the thermal evaporation technique on cleaned glass substrates. X-ray diffraction patterns of the investigated thin films show that crystallite growth occurs in the orthorhombic phase structure. The surface study carried out by using the scanning electron microscope (SEM) confirms that the grain size increases with gamma irradiation. The optical parameters were estimated from optical transmission spectra data measured from a UV–vis-spectrophotometer in the wavelength range of 200–1100?nm. The refractive index dispersion data of the investigated thin films follow the single oscillator model. The estimated values of static refractive index n0, oscillator strength Ed, zero frequency dielectric constant ε0, optical conductivity σoptical and the dissipation factor increases after irradiation, while the single oscillator energy Eo decreases after irradiation. It was found that the value of the optical band gap of the investigated thin films decreases and the corresponding absorption coefficient increases continuously with an increase in the dose of gamma irradiation. This post irradiation changes in the values of optical band gap and absorption coefficient were interpreted in terms of the bond distribution model.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Nonlinear optical materials (NLO) have been garnering attention due to their role in optical data storage, optical communication and laser technology. Organic crystals have emerged as an extremely important class of NLO materials, since their NLO properties compare very well with traditional inorganic NLO materials like KCl, LiNbO3, KDP (potassium dihydrogen phosphate), etc. They offer the additional advantage that they can be grown relatively inexpensively from solution close to room temperature, unlike the inorganic NLO materials which are grown from high temperature melts. In the present work, organic transparent single crystals of methyl para-hydroxy benzoate (MHB) were grown by slow evaporation solution growth technique (SEST) from aqueous solution at room temperature. The changes in structural, electrical and optical properties of gamma irradiated MHB single crystals were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–Visible absorption spectroscopy, Photo-luminescence (PL), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and AC conductivity measurements at room temperature. The polished MHB single crystals were irradiated with gamma rays of doses 10 and 15 kilogray (kGy). From the XRD analysis, it was observed that gamma irradiation for these doses drastically decreases the crystallinity. The optical absorption constants were examined by UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy, measured over the wavelength range of 200–800?nm, at normal incidence. The optical band gap as estimated from the Tauc plot ((αhν)2 vs hν) was found to be reduced with increasing gamma irradiation doses. PL spectra showed emission at wavelengths of 361?nm (3.43?eV) and 452?nm (2.74?eV), with enhanced intensities for the irradiated crystals. FTIR spectroscopy was utilised to identify the functional groups of MHB and indicated the rupture of specific types of bonds with gamma irradiation. Apart from that, the enhancement of AC conductivity with gamma irradiation was also observed for the gamma irradiated crystals.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Gafchromic HD-V2 films are employed to study the response to light ions useful in radiotherapy, such as protons, helium and carbon beams. The effects induced by the ions at an energy within about 300 keV and 16?MeV were investigated in terms of optical absorbance measurements in the irradiated active region of the film. The employed ion doses range between 0.4 Gy and 12?kGy. The results show that the net optical density increases almost exponentially with the absorbed dose and that it becomes saturated after prolonged dose higher than 1?kGy. The optical density produced in the film was measured by light transmission measurements at 700?nm wavelength, at which is observed the highest gafchromic sensitivity. Calibration curves of optical density versus exposure dose and type of ion are given. The dependence on the ion stopping power was presented and discussed.  相似文献

The optical properties of Tl2In2Se3S layered single crystals have been analyzed using transmission and reflection measurements in the wavelength region between 500 and 1100 nm. The optical indirect transitions with a band gap energy of 1.96 eV and direct transitions with a band gap energy of 2.16 eV were determined from analysis of absorption data at room temperature. Dispersion of the refractive index is discussed in terms of the Wemple–DiDomenico single-effective-oscillator model. The refractive index dispersion parameters – oscillator energy, dispersion energy, oscillator strength and zero-frequency refractive index – were found to be 4.67 eV, 45.35 eV, 1.38 × 1014 m ? 2 and 3.27, respectively. Transmission measurements were also performed in the temperature range 10–300 K. As a result of temperature-dependent transmission measurements, the rate of change in the indirect band gap with temperature, i.e. γ = ?5.6 × 10?4 eV/K, and the absolute zero value of the band gap energy, E gi(0) = 2.09 eV, were obtained.  相似文献

In this article, effect of gamma irradiation on the structural and optical properties of 2-aminopyridinium 4-nitrophenolate 4-nitrophenol (2AP4N) has been reported. The grown crystals of 2AP4N were exposed to 60Co gamma rays with a dose of 50 kGy and 100 kGy. The radiation-induced effects were analyzed using X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, UV–visible, photoluminescence techniques. The refractive index was determined using a long arm spectrometer. The structural properties of the pristine and irradiated crystals were studied using powder XRD. The peak intensity decrease after irradiation may be attributed to the formation of point defects. The UV visible study reveals that the energy gap has decreased after irradiation and then has increased for the higher dose. The intensity variation in the PL spectra is due to colour center mechanism. The SHG efficiency of 2AP4N crystals was found to be unaffected by gamma irradiation.  相似文献

In this work by applying first principles calculations structural, electronic and optical properties of Ca3Bi2 compound in hexagonal and cubic phases are studied within the framework of the density functional theory using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) approach. According to our study band gap for Ca3Bi2 in hexagonal phase are 0.47, 0.96 and 1?eV within the PBE-GGA, EV-GGA and mBJ-GGA, respectively. The corresponding values for cubic phase are 1.24, 2.08 and 2.14?eV, respectively. The effects of hydrostatic pressure on the behavior of the electronic properties such as band gap, valence bandwidths and anti-symmetry gap are investigated. It is found that the hydrostatic pressure increases the band widths of all bands below the Fermi energy while it decreases the band gap and the anti-symmetry gap. In our calculations, the dielectric tensor is derived within the random phase approximation (RPA). The first absorption peak in imaginary part of dielectric function for both phases is located in the energy range 2.0–2.5?eV which are beneficial to practical applications in optoelectronic devices in the visible spectral range. For instance, hexagonal phase of Ca3Bi2 with a band gap around 1?eV can be applied for photovoltaic application and cubic phase with a band gap of 2?eV can be used for water splitting application. Moreover, we found the optical spectra of hexagonal phase are anisotropic along E||x and E||z.  相似文献

The effects of electron beam irradiation on electrical and spectrometric properties of semi-insulating (SI) GaAs detectors were studied. The electric properties were monitored by reverse and forward current–voltage characteristics. In general, a breakdown voltage decrease with the dose was observed. However, some samples showed a local increase in the breakdown voltage at doses between 5 and 10?kGy. The detector spectrometric properties (the charge collection efficiency (CCE), the energy resolution and the detection efficiency) were evaluated from measured spectra of the 241Am radionuclide gamma source before and after electron irradiation. The CCE and energy resolution showed minor changes after irradiation. The detection efficiency noticed an initial increase (up to a dose of 5?kGy) followed by a permanent decrease. At 30?kGy, the overall degradation of detector functionality was observed with all samples.  相似文献

The structural, electronic, optical properties of GaS in bulk and monolayer forms have been studied by means of full-potential linearised augmented plane wave calculations within framework of the density functional theory. Generalised gradient approximation and Tran–Blaha modified Becke–Johnson exchange potential (mBJ) were employed for the treatment of exchange-correlation effect in calculations. Our calculated lattice parameters are in good agreement with previous theoretical results and available experimental data. The negative formation enthalpy and cohesive energy indicate that both bulk and monolayer GaS can be synthesised and stabilised experimentally. Our electronic results show that the band gap of GaS monolayer is higher than that of bulk counterpart and strong hybridisation between electronic states of constituent atoms is observed in both cases. The optical properties such as reflectivity, absorption coefficient, refractive index and optical conductivity were derived from calculated complex dielectric function for wide energy range up to 35?eV. Finally, the thermoelectric properties of GaS bulk and monolayer also were calculated using semi-classical Boltzmann theory within the constant relaxation time approximation for investigating their applicability in thermoelectric devices.  相似文献

The effects of gamma rays were studied on the optical, structural and chemical properties of the PA-66 polymer samples. The polymer samples obtained from Goodfellow (Cambridge, UK) were irradiated with gamma rays at various doses ranging from 100 to 1250 kGy. The pristine and gamma rays irradiated samples were characterized by UV–visible (UV–VIS) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. UV–VIS shows a shift in absorption toward the visible region for irradiated samples and a decrease in band gap energy (Eg). The XRD analyses show an increase in the crystalline nature of the polymer at higher doses as a result of significant decrease in the peak width of XRD patterns. The FTIR spectra show decrease in intensity and shift of various bands with increase in gamma dose.  相似文献
