An optical TE-TM mode splitter and modulator with an improved design using a Y-junction waveguide by Ti-diffusion in a Y-cut LiNbO3 substrate has been fabricated and characterized. In this paper, we introduce a model to analyze the linearity of multiple-quantum-well (MQW) traveling-wave electroabsorption modulator (TW-EAM). The device length, microwave loss (ML), velocity mismatch (VM) between lightwaves and the microwaves, and internal reflection (IR) due to impedance mismatch have effect on the linearity of a TW-EAM. ML has little effect on the intermodulation distortions (IMDs). VM also has little influence on IMD3 (third-order IMD), but severely affect IMD2 (second-order IMD), which become as high as 30 dB for the input frequency of 100 GHz, the device length of 0.8 mm, and VM of 20%. IR has different nonlinear characteristics according to the wavelength of the input frequency and the device length. As a result, it is known that IMDs improve when the device length equal to a quarter of the wavelength of the input signal and that the device length of 0.4 mm is appropriate for the analog fiber-optic communication with the frequency range of 50 GHz. 相似文献

This paper proposes a new crosstie overlay slow-wave structure for a traveling-wave electro-optical modulator and presents a design method including design considerations for the optimum structure. This structure can be designed to satisfy the phase velocity and impedance matching conditions simultaneously over a broad spectral bandwidth. Different types of finite element methods (FEMs) for microwave and optical waveguides are reviewed and are utilized for modeling of a traveling-wave (TW) optical modulator, as one of the typical microwave photonic devices. 提出了一种由新型沟槽耦合器和90°弯曲波导构成的InGaAsP/InP基矩形马赫-曾德电光调制器,对该调制器的L型波导相移臂设计了T型类微带行波电极.首先利用电极的等效电路估算带宽上限,进而在考虑阻抗匹配、回波损耗以及带宽等性能的基础上,使用有限元方法对电极的传输、输入/输出以及过渡区的结构参量进行优化.仿真结果表明由于受到电极输入及过渡区的性能限制,设计的整体行波电极匹配阻抗大于42Ω,回波损耗小于-15dB,带宽可达65GHz.测试制备的Ti/Au行波电极,得到回波损耗为-12dB和带宽为20GHz的最优性能. 相似文献

马赫-曾德尔调制器的非线性会严重恶化星上微波光子系统的性能。建立了包括光源、马赫-曾德尔调制器和光电探测器的双音调制理论模型,利用傅里叶级数展开、傅里叶变换和Gegenbauer加法定理,推导出了调制器非线性失真的严格通用解析解。根据该解析解,可精确地预计不同调制方式下星上微波光子系统的非线性失真,优化系统性能。分析结果表明,双边带和单边带调制条件下,将调制器输出信号保留至二次谐波能较好地近似计算三阶交调失真比和三阶交调截点,三阶交调失真比随调制系数的增大先增大后减小。当调制系数小于1.4674时,单边带调制三阶交调失真比至少比双边带调制小6dB,适合于星上微波光子系统的应用。 相似文献

This paper proposes and analyzes a GaAs traveling-wave optical modulator which uses a modulated coplanar strip electrode with periodic cross-tie overlay. This slow-wave structure can be designed to satisfy phase velocity and impedance matching conditions simultaneously. The dominant conductor loss in the slow-wave structure is reduced using the modulated coplanar strip electrode. The calculated 3-dB modulation bandwidth (100 GHz) is much wider than the bandwidth limit (30 GHz) of conventional electrode structures that are limited by phase velocity mismatch.This work was supported by the U.S. Army Research Office under contract DAAL-03-88-K-0005 and the Texas Advanced Technology Program. 相似文献

We review our recent work in the implementation of optical single-sideband (OSSB) modulation and in the application of this modulation format to microwave photonics and optical testing systems. We have developed an enhanced OSSB modulator for wide-band operation, the so-called bidirectional OSSB modulator, and a simplification of this scheme for narrow-band applications. These OSSB modulators are based on the use of a standard single-electrode Mach-Zehnder electro-optic modulator (MZ-EOM) and passive fiber-optic components. In both designs, the OSSB operation is shown to be independent of the MZ-EOM bias. Therefore, the optical modulation depth at the output of the device can be enhanced using minimum transmission biasing to provide suppression of the optical carrier. Finally, we demonstrate the application of OSSB modulators to the improvement of microwave/millimeter-wave subcarrier multiplexing fiber-optic links and to narrow-band fiber radio systems. In addition, we analyzed the feasibility and the limitations of an optical vector network analysis technique based on OSSB modulation that can provide sub-picometer wavelength resolution. 相似文献

The crosstalk of electrodes on lithium niobate (LiNbO3) Mach-Zehnder interferometers was studied. Three specific electrode configurations—Z-cut twin-electrode, Y-cut twin-electrode, and Y-cut tri-electrode—were analyzed. The capacitive coupling coefficient between electrodes was calculated by the method of moment and measured by an impedance analyzer. A scaled-up experimental setup was used to measure this coupling coefficient. The experimental data show good agreement with the numerical results. From the results, it was found that the coupling coefficient on Z-cut substrate with symmetric twin-electrode is larger than that of Y-cut substrate using twin- and tri-electrodes. In the case of asymmetric electrodes, however, the crosstalk between electrodes becomes smaller as the electrode width is increased. 相似文献

We have studied the dynamics of an electronic microwave generator with backward-wave and traveling-wave tubes connected in the feedback circuit and operating in the regimes of amplification and nonlinear Kompfner absorption, respectively. It is shown that radiation generated in such a system can have the form of a periodic sequence of ultrashort pulses. The studied mechanism of pulse generation is analogous to the method of passive mode locking, which is widely used in laser physics. 相似文献

A myriad of passive and active guided-wave devices has been successfully demonstrated using the photolime gel polymer. These include high density linear and curved channel waveguide arrays, electro-optic modulator and modulator arrays, highly multiplexed waveguide holograms for wavelength division demultiplexing and optical interconnects, waveguide lens, and rare-earth ion-doped polymer waveguide amplifiers. A single-mode linear channel waveguide array with device packaging density of 1250 channels cm-1 has been achieved. The first 12-channel wavelength division demultiplexer working at 830, 840, 850, 860, 870, 880, 890, 900, 910, 920, 930 and 940 nm on a GaAs substrate is also described in this paper. A polymer-based electro-optic travelling wave modulator with 40 GHz electrical bandwidth is further delineated. A rare-earth ion-doped polymer waveguide amplifier working at 1.06 μm with 8.5 dB optical gain is also achieved using this polymer matrix. The tunability of the waveguide refractive index of photolime gel polymer allows the formation of a graded index (GRIN) layer. As a result, these active and passive guided wave devices can be realized on any substrate of interest. High quality waveguides (loss<0.1 dB cm-1) have been made on glass, LiNbO3, fused silica, quartz, PC board, GaAs, Si, Al, Cu, Cr, Au, Kovar, BeO, Al2O3 and AIN. 相似文献

A single electroabsorption modulator was used to demultiplex a 10 Gbit/s channel from a 40 Gbit/s OTDM data stream, whilst simultaneously recovering the 10 GHz electrical clock. This was achieved using a new bi-directional operation of the EA modulator, combined with a simple phase-locked loop feedback circuit. Excellent system performance was achieved, indicating that operation up to and beyond 100 Gbit/s is possible using current technology. 相似文献
