2‐[(N‐Benzyl‐N‐methylamino)methyl]‐1,3‐butadiene (BMAMBD), the first asymmetric tertiary amino‐containing diene‐based monomer, was synthesized by sulfone chemistry and a nickel‐catalyzed Grignard coupling reaction in high purity and good yield. The bulk and solution free‐radical polymerizations of this monomer were studied. Traditional bulk free‐radical polymerization kinetics were observed, giving polymers with 〈Mn〉 values of 21 × 103 to 48 × 103 g/mol (where Mn is the number‐average molecular weight) and polydispersity indices near 1.5. In solution polymerization, polymers with higher molecular weights were obtained in cyclohexane than in tetrahydrofuran (THF) because of the higher chain transfer to the solvent. The chain‐transfer constants calculated for cyclohexane and THF were 1.97 × 10?3 and 5.77 × 10?3, respectively. To further tailor polymer properties, we also completed copolymerization studies with styrene. Kinetic studies showed that BMAMBD incorporated into the polymer chain at a faster rate than styrene. With the Mayo–Lewis equation, the monomer reactivity ratios of BMAMBD and styrene at 75 °C were determined to be 2.6 ± 0.3 and 0.28 ± 0.02, respectively. Altering the composition of BMAMBD in the copolymer from 17 to 93% caused the glass‐transition temperature of the resulting copolymer to decrease from 64 to ?7 °C. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Upon activation with diethylaluminium chloride (Et2AlCl), a series of phenyl‐substituted α‐diimine nickel precatalysts conducted 4‐methyl1pentene (4MP) and ethylene (E) (co)polymerizations via controlled chain‐walking to generate branched amorphous polymers with high molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn < 1.6). The obtained poly(4MP)s were amorphous elastomers with glass transition temperature (Tg) of ?10 ~ ?24 °C, which are higher than that of E‐4MP copolymer ( ? 63.0 °C). At room temperature (25 °C), 4MP polymerization proceeds in a living manner. The microstructures of the produced poly(4MP)s indicated the 2,1 and 1,2insertion followed by chain‐walking, the latter being predominant. The NMR analyses of the polymers showed that the obtained poly(4MP) possessed methyl, isobutyl, 2,4dimethylpentyl and 2methylhexyl groups, while the isobutyl and 2,4dimethylalkyl branches derived from 4MP were observed in the E‐4MP copolymer. The branch structures and the insertiontype of monomer were depended on the polymerization temperature, and the content of methyl branch increased with an increase in the polymerization temperature.  相似文献

Anionic polymerizations of three 1,3‐butadiene derivatives containing different N,N‐dialkyl amide functions, N,N‐diisopropylamide (DiPA), piperidineamide (PiA), and cis‐2,6‐dimethylpiperidineamide (DMPA) were performed under various conditions, and their polymerization behavior was compared with that of N,N‐diethylamide analogue (DEA), which was previously reported. When polymerization of DiPA was performed at ?78 °C with potassium counter ion, only trace amounts of oligomers were formed, whereas polymers with a narrow molecular weight distribution were obtained in moderate yield when DiPA was polymerized at 0 °C in the presence of LiCl. Decrease in molecular weight and broadening of molecular weight distribution were observed when polymerization was performed at a higher temperature of 20 °C, presumably because of the effect of ceiling temperature. In the case of DMPA, no polymer was formed at 0 °C and polymers with relatively broad molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn = 1.2) were obtained at 20 °C. The polymerization rate of PiA was much faster than that of the other monomers, and poly(PiA) was obtained in high yield even at ?78 °C in 24 h. The microstructure of the resulting polymers were exclusively 1,4‐ for poly(DMPA), whereas 20–30% of the 1,2‐structure was contained in poly(DiPA) and poly(PiA). © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Phenol has been used as an additive to enhance the rate of SET‐LRP in toluene at ambient temperature. A direct relationship between reaction time and amount of phenol added has been found with the optimum amount being ~ 20 equiv. of phenol with respect to initiator. Polymerization of methyl acrylate (MA) has been carried out in the presence of varying amounts of phenol and the rate of polymerization depends on the concentration of phenol relative to initiator. With a 20‐fold excess 93% conversion is observed after 218 min (PDI = 1.06, Mn = 11,500 g mol?1) when compared with 80% conversion with a 5‐fold excess (PDI = 1.21, Mn = 5310 g mol?1). When nonsterically hindered phenols are employed in a 20 molar excess with respect to the initiator the polymerizations have good linear first‐order kinetics and give polymers with PDI between 1.06 and 1.16. When a highly hindered phenol is employed there is a significant induction period prior to polymerization taking place which is similar to when using no phenol. Less hindered phenols accelerated the polymerization when compared with polymerizations with no added phenol. Increasing steric hindrance at the ? OH prevents this coordination which indicates that the role of phenol is different with either copper(0) or copper(I). Aliphatic and aromatic esters and amides were used successfully as initiators giving polymers with Mn close to that predicted at ~ 10,000 g mol?1 and PDI typically less than 1.10. An induction period is observed in most cases which can be removed by a pre‐equilibrium step before the addition of monomer. This results in excellent first‐order kinetics being observed in the polymerization of MA in toluene solution (50 vol %). Here Cu(0) (powder)/Me6‐TREN with 20 equiv. of phenol and all of the reactants, except the monomer, were added to the reaction flask and stirred for 45 min at 25 °C. The structure of the polymer is shown by MALDI TOF MS to contain bromide chain ends derived from the alkyl bromide initiator. The retention of this end group is consistent with living radical polymerization. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 7376–7385, 2008  相似文献

The living synthesis of poly(1,3‐cyclohexadiene) was performed with an initiator adduct that was synthesized from a 1:2 (mol/mol) mixture of N,N,N,N′‐tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) and n‐butyllithium. This initiator, which was preformed at 65 °C, facilitated the synthesis of high‐molecular‐weight poly(1,3‐cyclohexadiene) (number‐average molecular weight = 50,000 g/mol) with a narrow molecular weight distribution (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight = 1.12). A plot of the kinetic chain length versus the time indicated that termination was minimized and chain transfer to the monomer was eliminated when a preformed initiator adduct was used. Chain transfer was determined to occur when the initiator was generated in situ. The polymerization was highly sensitive to both the temperature and the choice of tertiary diamine. The use of the bulky tertiary diamines sparteine and dipiperidinoethane resulted in poor polymerization control and reduced polymerization rates (7.0 × 10−5 s−1) in comparison with TMEDA‐mediated polymerizations (1.5 × 10−4 s−1). A series of poly(1,3‐cyclohexadiene‐block‐isoprene) diblock copolymers were synthesized to determine the molar crossover efficiency of the polymerization. Polymerizations performed at 25 °C exhibited improved molar crossover efficiencies (93%) versus polymerizations performed at 40 °C (80%). The improved crossover efficiency was attributed to the reduction of termination events at reduced polymerization temperatures. The microstructure of these polymers was determined with 1H NMR spectroscopy, and the relationship between the molecular weight and glass‐transition temperature at an infinite molecular weight was determined for polymers containing 70% 1,2‐addition (150 °C) and 80% 1,4‐addition (138 °C). © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was successfully carried out at room temperature (25 °C) under 60Co γ‐irradiation environment. The polymerization proceeded smoothly with high conversion (>90%) within 7 h. The polymerizations kept the features of controlled radical polymerization: first‐order kinetics, well‐predetermined number‐average molecular weights (Mn,GPC), and narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn < 1.25). 1H NMR spectroscope and matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry confirmed that poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) chain was end‐capped by the initiator moieties. The Cu(II) concentration could reduce to 20 ppm level while keeping good control over molecular weights. This is the first successful example for the ATRP of MMA under 60Co γ‐irradiation at room temperature. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011  相似文献

The bulk cyclopolymerization of diepisulfide, 1,2:5,6‐diepithio‐3,4‐di‐O‐methyl‐1,2:5,6‐tetradeoxy‐D ‐mannitol ( 1 ), was studied using R4N+Br? (R = ? CH3, C2H5, C3H7, C4H9, and C7H15) and (C4H9)4N+X? (X = Cl, I, NO3, and ClO4) as the initiators. All the bulk polymerizations of 1 using quaternary tetraalkylammonium salts at 90 °C proceeded without gelation even at high conversion to produce gel‐free polymers consisting of 2,5‐anhydro‐1,5‐dithio‐D ‐glucitol (I) as the major cyclic repeating unit along with 1,5‐anhydro‐2,5‐dithio‐D ‐mannitol (II) and the desulfurized acyclic unit (III) as the minor units. The polymerization rate and molar fraction of the I unit increased with the increasing alkyl chain length of the tetraalkylammonium cation and the increasing nucleophilicity of the counteranion. Tetrabutylammonium chloride exhibited the highest catalytic activity and the highest stereoselectivity, that is, the thiosugar polymer with I:II:III = 81:15:4 and a number‐average molecular weight of 31.9 × 103 was obtained in 85% yield for a polymerization time of 0.5 h. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cationic polymerization of α‐methyl vinyl ethers was examined using an IBEA‐Et1.5AlCl1.5/SnCl4 initiating system in toluene in the presence of ethyl acetate at 0 ~ ?78 °C. 2‐Ethylhexyl 2‐propenyl ether (EHPE) had a higher reactivity, compared to corresponding vinyl ethers. But the resulting polymers had low molecular weights at 0 or ?50 °C. In contrast, the polymerization of EHPE at ?78 °C almost quantitatively proceeded, and the number‐average molecular weight (Mn) of the obtained polymers increased in direct proportion to the EHPE conversion with quite narrow molecular weight distributions (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight ≤ 1.05). In monomer‐addition experiments, the Mn of the polymers shifted higher with low polydispersity as the polymerization proceeded, indicative of living polymerization. In the polymerization of methyl 2‐propenyl ether (MPE), the living‐like propagation also occurred under the reaction conditions similar to those for EHPE, but the elimination of the pendant methoxy groups was observed. The introduction of a more stable terminal group, quenched with sodium diethyl malonate, suppressed this decomposition, and the living polymerization proceeded. The glass transition temperature of the obtained poly(MPE) was 34 °C, which is much higher than that of the corresponding poly(vinyl ether). This poly(MPE) had solubility characteristics that differed from those of poly(vinyl ethers). © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 2202–2211, 2008  相似文献

The cationic polymerizations of γ-methylphenylallene ( 1 ) and α-methylphenylallene ( 2 ) were carried out with some Lewis acids at 25 and 0°C in dichloromethane to obtain the corresponding polymers through allyl cations, respectively. Tin (IV) chloride was found to be an effective catalyst for the cationic polymerization of both allenes 1 and 2 compared with other Lewis acids. Thus, in the polymerization of 1 , methanol-insoluble polymer was only obtained using Tin (IV) chloride, and M?n of methanol-insoluble polymer obtained by Tin (IV) chloride was the highest in the polymerization of 2 . From the analysis of 1H- and 13C-NMR spectra of the obtained polymers, the polymer from 1 consisted of two kinds of units polymerized by each double bonds of allene 1 , whereas the polymer from 2 consisted of only one unit polymerized by terminal double bond of allene 2 . Moreover, effect of solvent on the cationic polymerizations of 1 and 2 were discussed.  相似文献

Ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone (ε‐CL) was carried out using β‐diketiminato‐supported monoaryloxo ytterbium chlorides L1Yb(OAr)Cl(THF) (1) [L1 = N,N′‐bis(2,6‐dimethylphenyl)‐2,4‐pentanediiminato, OAr = 2,6‐di‐tert‐butylphenoxo‐], and L2Yb(OAr′)Cl(THF) (2) [L2 = N,N′‐bis(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)‐2,4‐pentanediiminato, OAr′ = 2,6‐di‐tert‐butyl‐4‐methylphenoxo‐], respectively, as single‐component initiator. The influence of reaction conditions, such as polymerization temperature, polymerization time, initiator, and initiator concentration, on the monomer conversion, molecular weight, and molecular weight distribution of the resulting polymers was investigated. Complex 1 was well characterized and its crystal structure was determined. Some features and kinetic behaviors of the CL polymerization initiated by these two complexes were studied. The polymerization rate is first order with respect to monomer. The Mn of the polymer increases linearly with the increase of the polymer yield, while polydispersity remained narrow and unchanged throughout the polymerization in a broad range of temperatures from 0 to 50 °C. The results indicated that the present system has a “living character”. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 1147–1152, 2006  相似文献

Dendritic multifunctional macroinitiators having six and 12 TIPNO‐based alkoxyamines, TIPNO‐6 and TIPNO‐12 , were synthesized and used in the living radical polymerization of styrene (St), methyl acrylate (MA), N,N‐dimethylacrylamide (DMAAm), and isoprene (IP). The polymerizations of St initiated with TIPNO‐6 gave 6‐arm star polymers with narrow polydispersities of 1.14–1.18. In the polymerizations of MA initiated with TIPNO‐6 and TIPNO‐12 , the influences of added TIPNO on the polydispersity indexes (PDIs) of the resulting star polymers were first investigated, and this led to the successful formation of poly(MA) star polymers with narrow polydispersities (1.10–1.18). Moreover, the polymerizations of DMAAm and IP from TIPNO‐6 in the presence or absence of TIPNO were briefly investigated. The benzyl ether bonds of the poly(St) and poly(MA) star polymers were cleaved by treating with Me3SiI or Pd/C, and the resulting arm's parts were analyzed with SEC. The PDIs of the resulting arm parts were low (1.19–1.23), and the Mns agreed with the Mn,theor, indicating that the poly(St) and poly(MA) star polymers had well‐controlled arms. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The cationic polymerizations of isobutylene (IB) initiated by an H2O/AlCl3 system were carried out in a mixture of n‐hexane/methylene dichloride of 60/40 v/v at ?50 °C in the presence of various external electron pair donors (EDs), including methyl benzoate (MB), ethyl benzoate (EB), and methyl acrylate (MA). The effects of the concentrations of EDs ([ED]) and polymerization time on monomer conversion and kinetics of IB polymerization were also investigated. The complexes between AlCl3 and the esters were soluble in the polymerization system at ?50 °C. The polymers with high molecular weights and relatively narrow molecular weight distributions were obtained in the presence of the EDs. The rate of polymerization decreased with increasing [ED]. The kinetic orders of the EDs were remarkably dependent on their chemical structure, steric hindrance from moieties, and concentration in the polymerization system. The reaction order of MB was determined to be around ?1.3 when [MB] ≤ 0.40 mmol/L, whereas it was ?12.9 when [MB] ≥ 0.40 mmol/L. The reaction order of EB was determined to be ?1.36 when [EB] ≤ 0.41 mmol/L, whereas it was ?3.36 when [EB] ≥ 0.41 mmol/L. The reaction order of MA was determined to be ?1.85 when [MA] ≤ 0.48 mmol/L, whereas it was ?16.7 when [MA] ≥ 0.48 mmol/L. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Lipase‐catalyzed ring‐opening bulk polymerizations of 3(S)‐sec‐butylmorpholine‐2,5‐dione (BMD) were investigated. Selected commercial lipases were screened as catalysts for BMD polymerization at 110°C. Polymerizations catalyzed with 10 wt.‐% of lipase PPL and PC result in BMD conversions of about 70% and in molecular weights of the products ranging from 5 500 to 10 700. Lipases MJ, CR and ES showed lower catalytic activities for the polymerization of BMD. Poly(3‐sec‐butylmorpholine‐2,5‐dione) has a carboxylic acid group at one end and a hydroxy group at the other end. During the polymerization racemization of the isoleucine residue takes place. Lipase PPL was selected for a more detailed study. The apparent rate of polymerization increases with increasing PPL concentration when the polymerization temperature is 110°C. When the PPL concentration is 5 and 10 wt.‐% with respect to the monomer, a conversion of about 70% is reached after 5 d and 3 d, respectively, while for a PPL concentration of 1 wt.‐% the conversion is less than 7% even after 6  d. High concentrations of PPL (10 wt.‐%) result in high Mn values (< 4  d). The highest molecular weight poly(BMD), Mn = 19 900, resulted from a polymerization conducted at 120°C with 5 wt.‐% PPL for 6 d. The general trend observed by varying the polymerization temperature is as follows: (i) monomer conversion and Mn increase with increasing reaction temperature from 110 to 125°C, (ii) monomer conversion and Mn decrease with an increase in reaction temperature from 125 to 130°C. Water content was found to be an important factor that controls both the conversion and the molecular weight. With increasing water content, enhanced polymerization rates are achieved while the molecular weight of poly(BMD) decreases.  相似文献

The polymerization of ?‐caprolactone initiated by two catalyst systems was studied: (1) carbazole‐potassium in the presence of 18‐crown‐6 ether and (2) NdCl3/TBP/TIBA (neodymiumtrichloride/tri‐n‐butyl‐phosphate/triisobutylaluminium) at the molar ratio 1/3/1. For both initiator systems conversion/time plots were determined and the polymers were characterized by IR, GPC and by 1H‐ and 13C?NMR spectroscopy. Polyesters with the highest molecular weight (M n?44 000 g/mol) were obtained for the polymerizations initiated by the carbazole‐potassium/18‐crown‐6 ether system. The features of the polymerization initiated by the carbazole‐potassium/18‐crown‐6 ether system are discussed on the basis of a simple scheme. The nature of this polymerization is non‐living. A novel tridentate anilido‐aldimine ligand, [o‐C6H4(NHAr)? HC?NCH2CH2NMe2] (Ar = 2,6‐iPr2C6H3, L ‐H, 1 ), has been prepared by the condensation of N, N‐dimethylethylenediamine with one molar equivalent of 2‐fluoro‐benzaldehyde in hexane, followed by the addition of the lithium salt of diisopropylaniline in THF. Magnesium (Mg) and zinc (Zn) complexes supported by the tridentate anilido‐aldimine ligand have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Reaction of L ‐H ( 1 ) with an equivalent amount of MgnBu2 or ZnEt2 produces the monomeric complex [ L MgnBu] ( 2 ) or [ L ZnEt] ( 3 ), respectively. Experimental results show that complexes 2 and 3 are efficient catalysts for ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone (CL) and L ‐lactide (LA) in the presence of benzyl alcohol and catalyze the polymerization of ε‐CL and L ‐LA in a controlled fashion yielding polymers with a narrow polydispersity index. In both polymerizations, the activity of Mg complex 2 is higher than that of Zn complex 3 , which is probably due to the higher Lewis acidity and better oxophilic nature of Mg2+ metal. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The sterically hindered, 1,1‐disubstituted monomers di‐n‐butyl itaconate (DBI), dicyclohexyl itaconate (DCHI), and dimethyl itaconate (DMI) were polymerized with reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) free‐radical polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Cumyl dithiobenzoate, cumyl phenyl dithioacetate, 2‐cyanoprop‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate, 4‐cyanopentanoic acid dithiobenzoate, and S‐methoxycarbonylphenylmethyl dithiobenzoate were employed as RAFT agents to mediate a series of polymerizations at 60 °C yielding polymers ranging in their number‐average molecular weight from 4500 to 60,000 g mol?1. The RAFT polymerizations of these hindered monomers displayed hybrid living behavior (between conventional and living free‐radical polymerization) of various degrees depending on the molecular structure of the initial RAFT agent. In addition, DCHI was polymerized via ATRP with a CuCl/methyl benzoate/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine/cyclohexanone system at 60 °C. Both the ATRP and RAFT polymerization of the hindered monomers displayed living characteristics; however, broader than expected molecular weight distributions were observed for the RAFT systems (polydispersity index = 1.15–3.35). To assess the cause of this broadness, chain‐transfer‐to‐monomer constants for DMI, DBI, and DCHI were determined (1.4 × 10?3, 1.3 × 10?3, and 1.0 × 10?3, respectively) at 60 °C. Simulations carried out with the PREDICI program package suggested that chain transfer to monomer contributed to the broadening process. In addition, the experimental results indicated that viscosity had a pronounced effect on the broadness of the molecular weight distributions. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, living radical polymerizations of a water‐soluble monomer poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether methacylate (PEGMA) in bulk with low‐toxic iron catalyst system, including iron chloride hexahydrate and triphenylphosphine, were carried out successfully. Effect of reaction temperature and catalyst concentration on the polymerization of PEGMA was investigated. The polymerization kinetics showed the features of “living”/controlled radical polymerization. For example, Mn,GPC values of the resultant polymers increased linearly with monomer conversion. A faster polymerization of PEGMA could be obtained in the presence of a reducing agent Fe(0) wire or ascorbic acid. In the case of Fe(0) wire as the reducing agent, a monomer conversion of 80% was obtained in 80 min of reaction time at 90 °C, yielding a water‐soluble poly(PEGMA) with Mn = 65,500 g mol?1 and Mw/Mn = 1.39. The features of “living”/controlled radical polymerization of PEGMA were verified by analysis of chain‐end and chain‐extension experiments. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of easily accessible and stable Schiff‐base nickel complexes (complex 1 – 4 ) in conjunction with methylaluminoxane (MAO) were employed for the synthesis of relatively high molecular weight β‐pinene polymers at high temperature with high productivity. The ligand structure of the complex had a substantial effect on the polymerization in terms of the productivity and the molecular weight. With complex 4 in the presence of MAO, high molecular weight polymers of β‐pinene (Mn ~ 10,900) were obtained at 40 °C with an extremely high productivity up to 1.25 × 107 g polyβ‐pinene/mol of Ni. 1H NMR analyses showed that the obtained β‐pinene polymer was structurally identical to that formed by conventional cationic Lewis acid initiators. The polymerization was presumably initiated by the nickel cation formed by the reaction of the schiff‐base nickel complex and MAO, while the propagation proceeded in a manner typical for a conventional carbocationic polymerization process. Direct evidence for the carbocationic polymerization was offered by the fact that quenching of the polymerization with methanol at a low monomer conversion resulted in incorporation of a methoxyl end group into the polymer chain. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Acidic bismuth salts, such as BiCl3, BiBr3, BiJ3, and Bi‐triflate catalyzed the ring‐opening polymerization of 2‐methoxazoline (MOZ) in bulk at 100 °C, whereas less acidic salts such as Bi2O3 or Bi(III)acetate did not. Bi‐triflate‐catalyzed polymerizations of 2‐ethyloxazoline (EtOZ) were performed with variation of the monomer–catalyst ratio (M/C). It was found that the molecular weights were independent of the M/C ratio. The formation of cationic chain ends and the absence of cycles was proven by reactions of virgin polymerization products with N,N‐dimethyl‐4‐aminopyridine or triphenylphosphine. The resulting polymers having modified cationic chain ends were characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy and MALDI‐TOF mass spectrometry. The polymerization mechanism including chain‐transfer reactions is discussed. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 4777–4784, 2008  相似文献

This article discusses an effective route to prepare amphiphilic diblock copolymers containing a poly(ethylene oxide) block and a polyolefin block that includes semicrystalline thermoplastics, such as polyethylene and syndiotactic polystyrene (s‐PS), and elastomers, such as poly(ethylene‐co‐1‐octene) and poly(ethylene‐co‐styrene) random copolymers. The broad choice of polyolefin blocks provides the amphiphilic copolymers with a wide range of thermal properties from high melting temperature ~270 °C to low glass‐transition temperature ~?60 °C. The chemistry involves two reaction steps, including the preparation of a borane group‐terminated polyolefin by the combination of a metallocene catalyst and a borane chain‐transfer agent as well as the interconversion of a borane terminal group to an anionic (? O?K+) terminal group for the subsequent ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide. The overall reaction process resembles a transformation from the metallocene polymerization of α‐olefins to the ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide. The well‐defined reaction mechanisms in both steps provide the diblock copolymer with controlled molecular structure in terms of composition, molecular weight, moderate molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn < 2.5), and absence of homopolymer. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
