A facile way to prepare free-standing polyelectrolyte multilayer films of poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate)(PSS)/poly(diallyldimethylammonium)(PDDA) was developed by applying a new pH-dependent sacrificial system based on cross-linked poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) microgels. The tertiary amine groups of PDMAEMA microgels can be protonated in acidic environment, and the protonated microgels were deposited by layer-by-layer (LbL) technique with PSS. PSS/PDDA multilayer films were constructed on the top of the PSS/microgels sacrificial layers. The LbL assembly process was investigated by UV–vis spectroscopy. Further study shows that the free-standing PSS/PDDA multilayer films can be obtained within 3 min by treating the as-prepared films in alkali aqueous solution with a pH of 12.0. The pH-triggered exfoliation of PSS/PDDA multilayer films provides a simple and facile way to prepare LbL assembled free-standing multilayer films.  相似文献

The effect of solvent conditions on the growth of polyelectrolyte (PE) multilayer films comprising poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(styrenesulfonate sodium salt) (PSS) on planar substrates was investigated by means of surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy (SPRS), quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), and atomic force microscopy techniques. The solvent quality was varied by the addition of ethanol to the PE solutions used for deposition of the layers, thus tuning the relative strength of electrostatic and secondary intermolecular and intramolecular interactions. Experiments were performed with PE solutions both without added electrolyte and containing 0.5 M NaCl. Decreasing the solvent quality (i.e., increasing the amount of ethanol in the adsorption solution) resulted in a marked increase of both the multilayer film thickness and mass loading, as determined from the SPRS spectra and QCM frequency shifts, respectively. With the solution composition approaching the precipitation point, thick PAH/PSS films were formed due to the screening of the electrostatic intra- and interchain repulsions and enhanced hydrophobic interactions between the polyelectrolyte chains. However, the films formed from water/ethanol mixtures remained stable upon subsequent exposure to water or salt-containing solutions: no significant film desorption occurred after up to 24 h of exposure to water or 0.5 M NaCl solutions. In addition, the effect of postdeposition exposure to water/ethanol mixtures was investigated for PE multilayers assembled from aqueous solutions. In this case, the optical thickness of the films was determined during exposure to water/ethanol mixtures, and instead of swelling, the polyelectrolyte films collapse to the surface as a result of the unfavorable segment-solvent interactions.  相似文献

We report the influence of polyelectrolyte (PE) multilayer films prepared from poly(styrene sulfonate)-poly(acrylic acid) (PSS-PAA) blends, deposited in alternation with poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH), on film wettability and the adsorption behavior of the protein immunoglobulin G (IgG). Variations in the chemical composition of the PAH/(PSS-PAA) multilayer films, controlled by the PSS/PAA blend ratio in the dipping solutions, were used to systematically control film thickness, surface morphology, surface wettability, and IgG adsorption. Spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements indicate that increasing the PSS content in the blend solutions results in a systematic decrease in film thickness. Increasing the PSS content in the blend solutions also leads to a reduction in film surface roughness (as measured by atomic force microscopy), with a corresponding increase in surface hydrophobicity. Advancing contact angles (theta) range from 7 degrees for PAH/PAA films through to 53 degrees for PAH/PSS films. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements indicate that the increase in film hydrophobicity is due to an increase in PSS concentration at the film surface. In addition, the influence of added electrolyte in the PE solutions was investigated. Adsorption from PE solutions containing added salt favors PSS adsorption and results in more hydrophobic films. The amount of IgG adsorbed on the multilayer films systematically increased on films assembled from blends with increasing PSS content, suggesting strong interactions between PSS in the multilayer films and IgG. Hence, multilayer films prepared from blended PE solutions can be used to tune film thickness and composition, as well as wetting and protein adsorption characteristics.

Attenuated total internal reflectance Fourier transform infrared, ATR-FTIR, spectroscopy was used to compare the water uptake and doping within polyelectrolyte multilayers made from poly(styrene sulfonate), PSS, and a polycation, either poly(allylamine hydrochloride), PAH, or poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride), PDADMAC. Unlike PDADMA/PSS multilayers, whose water content depended on the solution ionic strength, PAH/PSS multilayers were resistant to doping by NaCl to a concentration of 1.2 M. Using (infrared active) perchlorate salt, the fraction of residual counterions in PDADMA/PSS and PAH/PSS was determined to be 3% and 6%, respectively. The free energy of association between the polymer segments, in the presence of NaClO4, was about 5 kJ mol-1 and -10 kJ mol-1, respectively, for PDADMA/PSS and PAH/PSS, indicating the relatively strong association between the polymer segments in the latter relative to the former. Varying the pH of the solution in contact with the PAH/PSS multilayer revealed a transition to a highly swollen state, interpreted to signal protonation of PAH under much more basic conditions than the pKa of the solution polymer. The increase in the multilayer pKa suggested an interaction energy for PAH/PSS in NaCl of ca. 16 kJ mol-1.

Poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS)/poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) multilayers were treated with 1-5 M NaCl solutions, resulting in continuous changes in the physicochemical properties of the multilayers. Significant mass loss was observed when the salt concentration was higher than 2 M and reached as high as 72% in a 5 M NaCl solution. The disassembly occurred initially in the superficial layers and then developed in the bulk multilayers. For the multilayers with PDADMAC as the outmost layer, the molar ratio of PSS/PDADMAC was increased and the surface chemistry was changed from PDADMAC domination below 2 M NaCl to PSS domination above 3 M NaCl. Owing to the higher concentrations of uncompensated for polyelectrolytes at both lower and higher salt concentrations, the swelling ratio of the multilayers was decreased until reaching 3 M NaCl and then was increased significantly again. The salt-treated PSS/PDADMAC thin films are expected to show different behaviors in terms of the physical adsorption of various functional substances, cell adhesion and proliferation, and chemical reaction activity.  相似文献

Polyelectrolyte multilayer thin films were prepared via the alternate deposition of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and a blend of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS). When the pH of the blend solution was 3.5, the presence of PAA in this solution significantly increased the total film thickness. With only 10 wt % PAA in the blend adsorption solution, a large increase in film thickness was observed (92 nm cf. 18 nm). It was also demonstrated that the total amount of PSS adsorbed was enhanced by the presence of PAA in the blend solution, showing that the blend solution composition influenced that of the multilayer films. Thin films prepared with nanoblended layers also showed improved pH stability, because they exhibited reduced film rearrangement upon exposure to acidic conditions (pH = 2.5).  相似文献

A facile and efficient approach has been developed to speed up the fabrication of LBL films through sequential dipping in vigorously agitated solutions. By this agitated-dipping (AD) LBL technique, the multilayer films of PAH and PSS were fabricated. The resulting films were explored by UV-vis spectroscopy, X-ray reflectivity, and AFM. Meanwhile, the comparison of the AD and conventional LBL films was made, which demonstrated that AD LBL can decrease dipping time by more than 15 times without reducing film quality remarkably. In addition, to verify the generality of AD LBL, we studied the AD LBL films of PDDA/PSS and PAH/PAA preliminarily as well. AD LBL promotes the efficiency of conventional LBL greatly while preserving its most advantages, such as simplicity, cheapness, precise control, universality in substrates, recycling use of sample solutions, and so on. It would be a promising alternative to build up LBL films rapidly.  相似文献

Interactions between surfaces bearing multilayer films of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(styrenesulfonate sodium salt) (PSS) were investigated across a range of aqueous KBr solutions. Three layer films (PAH/PSS/PAH) were preassembled on mica surfaces, and the resulting interactions were measured with the interferometric surface force apparatus (SFA). Increasing the ionic strength of the medium resulted in a progressive swelling of the multilayer films. Interactions in solutions containing more than 10(-3) M KBr were dominated by a long-ranged steric repulsion originating from compression of polyelectrolyte segments extending into solution. In 10(-1) M KBr, repeated measurements at the same contact position showed a considerable reduction of the range and the strength of the steric force, indicating a flattening of the film during initial approach. Furthermore, this flattening was irreversible on the time scale of the experiments, and measurements performed up to 72 h after the initial compression showed no signs of relaxation. These studies aid in understanding the dominant interactions between polyelectrolyte multilayers, including polyelectrolyte films deposited on colloidal particles, which is important for the preparation of colloidally stable nanoengineered particles.  相似文献

We fabricated a layer-by-layer (LbL) film of temperature-responsive homopolymers at neutral pH and studied its temperature-dependent solubility. We first measured the cloud point of mixed solutions of temperature-responsive polymers. The significant decrease of cloud point suggested that the intermolecular interaction between two polymer chains of different kinds was stronger than that between two polymer chains of the same kind. Strong intermolecular interaction between two polymer chains of different kinds is a prerequisite for LbL assembly. On the basis of the decrease of cloud point of mixed solutions of temperature-responsive homopolymers, we selected poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (PVCL) and poly(2-hydroxypropyl acrylate) (PHPA) for LbL assembly. LbL films of the two polymers were fabricated at neutral pH at a constant temperature. When the film was immersed in purified water at a temperature lower than the assembly temperature, it can be partially dissolved with a diffusion-limited dissolution process. The temperature-responsive solubility of the LbL film is closely connected to the phase behavior of mixed solutions of the two polymers. Additionally, as compared to multilayer films of neutral polymers and poly(carboxylic acid)s, the PVCL/PHPA multilayer film is relatively stable when it was immersed in buffer solutions near physiological pH at the assembly temperature. Such LbL films with temperature-responsive solubility might be used as a dissolvable film or a smart capsule.  相似文献

Temperature- and pH-sensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)?Cco-acrylic acid (pNIPAm-co-AAc) microgels were deposited on glass substrates coated with polyelectrolyte multilayers composed of the polycation poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and the polyanion poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS). The microgel density and structure of the resultant films were investigated as a function of: (1) the number of PAH/PSS layers (layer thickness); (2) the charge on the outer layer of the polyelectrolyte multilayer film; and (3) the pH of microgel deposition solution. The resultant films were studied by differential interference contrast optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the coverage of the microgels on the surface was a complex function of the pH of the deposition solution, the charge on the outer layer of the polyelectrolyte thin film and the PAH/PSS layer thickness; although it appears that microgel charge plays the biggest role in determining the resultant surface coverage.  相似文献

<正>The stability of full-conjugated self-assembled(SA) multilayer films based on partially doped polyaniline(PANI) as a polycation and poly(o-aminobenzoic acid)(PCAN),poly(aniline-2-sulfonic acid)(PSAN) as polyanions is investigated in alkali aqueous solutions. The self-assembled PANI-PCAN films keep their stability within 24 h in 1 mol/L NaOH solution,-the PANI-PSAN films, however, maintain the stability for 20 min in the same condition because the solubility of PSAN in alkali solutions is much higher than that of PCAN.The electrochemical properties of the SA films are determined, and the film-CdS composites formed in situ are also reported.  相似文献

Poly(anilineboronic acid) (PABA)/ribonucleic acid (RNA) multilayer films were prepared under neutral condition using a layer-by-layer deposition of PABA and RNA. RNA was used both as a polyelectrolyte for multilayer formation as well as dopant for PABA. Photoelastic modulated infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy measurements suggest that PABA interacts covalently with RNA through the formation of a boronate ester, a boron-nitrogen dative bond, as well as electrostatic interactions of anionic phosphates with cationic amines. The deposition procedure was monitored with UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, showing a linear dependence of absorbance with the number of PABA/RNA bilayers deposited. The multilayer films were further characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ellipsometry, which yielded a PABA/RNA bilayer thickness of approximately 10 nm. The PABA/RNA multilayer films are redox-active at neutral pH, consistent with the formation of a self-doped polymer. Electrochemical control of PABA under these conditions allows potential-induced controlled release of RNA from a multilayer at neutral pH, suggesting that this may serve as a novel method for controlled release of RNA under physiological conditions.  相似文献

We investigated the correlation between surface wettability and internal structure of polyelectrolyte (PE)/PE and PE/inorganic multilayer films prepared by the spin self-assembly (SA) method. Spin self-assembled poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH)/poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) multilayer films deposited from PE solutions of 10 mM show the distinct oscillation in contact angles with variation of the outermost PE layer, representing the saturated values in contact angles of individual PAH and PSS layers. These contact angles are also well consistent with the angles measured from respective PE layers (i.e., PAH and PSS) of the spin SA (PAH/CdS-COO-) and (CdS-NH3+/PSS) films carrying the flat interface between PE and inorganic CdS nanoparticle layers as confirmed by X-ray reflectivity. Furthermore, based on the contact angle of CdS-NH3+ layer in the ordered (CdS-NH3+/PSS) films, the change in surface wettability of CdS-NH3+ layers of two different spin SA (CdS-NH3+/poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA)) multilayer films with ordered and disordered internal structure is also investigated. The films with ordered and disordered internal structure were fabricated by the pH adjustment of PMAA. The CdS-NH3+ layer in both CdS-NH3+/PSS and CdS-NH3+/PMAA multilayer films with the ordered internal structure has the contact angle of about 25 +/- 2 degrees irrespective of the PSS or PMAA sublayer. As a result, the same surface wettability of PE or inorganic layers, despite different sublayers, strongly indicates that the spin SA method in optimum condition allows the top surface to be completely covered with a low level ofinterdigitation with a sublayer at each deposition step, and this leads to the conclusion that physical and chemical characteristics of the sublayers have no significant influence on those of the outermost layer.  相似文献

We demonstrate that the surface morphology and surface-wetting behavior of layer-by-layer (LbL) films can be controlled using different deposition methods. Multilayer films based upon hydrogen-bonding interactions between hydrophobically modified poly(ethylene oxide) (HM-PEO) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) have been prepared using the dip- and spin-assisted LbL methods. A three-dimensional surface structure in the dip-assisted multilayer films appeared above a critical number of layer pairs owing to the formation of micelles of HM-PEO in its aqueous dipping solution. In the case of spin-assisted HM-PEO/PAA multilayer films, no such surface morphology development was observed, regardless of the layer pair number, owing to the limited rearrangement and aggregation of HM-PEO micelles during spin deposition. The contrasting surface morphologies of the dip- and spin-assisted LbL films have a remarkable effect on the wetting behavior of water droplets. The water contact angle of the dip-assisted HM-PEO/PAA LbL films reaches a maximum at an intermediate layer pair number, coinciding with the critical number of layer pairs for surface morphology development, and then decreases rapidly as the surface structure is evolved and amplified. In contrast, spin-assisted HM-PEO/PAA LbL films yield a nearly constant water contact angle due to the surface chemical composition and roughness that is uniform independent of layer pair number. We also demonstrate that the multilayer samples prepared using both the dip- and spin-assisted LbL methods were easily peeled away from any type of substrate to yield free-standing films; spin-assisted LbL films appeared transparent, while dip-assisted LbL films were translucent.  相似文献

In this study, we investigate the buildup of PEI-(PSS-PAH)(n) polyelectrolyte multilayers at pH 7.4 in the presence of either NaCl or NaSCN as a supporting electrolyte. It appears that in the presence of increasing thiocyanate concentrations (from 0.1 to 0.5 M), the thickness increment, obtained from optical waveguide lightmode spectroscopy experiments, increases whereas it stays practically constant for increasing sodium chloride concentrations (between 0.1 and 0.5 M). The hydration of the films differs also markedly between both electrolyte solutions. The differences in the construction of the polyelectrolyte multilayers in the presence of both supporting electrolytes are rationalized in terms of strong SCN(-) condensation on the PAH chains. The occurrence of this ion condensation is indirectly demonstrated by means of zeta potential measurements and directly demonstrated by means of attenuated total internal reflection infrared spectroscopy on the multilayer films. Moreover when the films are built up in the presence of SCN(-), these ions are only slowly exchanged by the Cl(-) ions introduced in the bulk. Conversely the thick films obtained from 0.5 M NaSCN solutions do not deswell when the buffer solution is replaced by a 0.5 M NaCl containing buffer. The permeability of the films constructed in the presence of both sodium salts is also studied by means of cyclic voltametry and is found to be markedly different in the case of films made from five bilayers at 0.5 M salt concentration. This difference is due to the different morphology and porosity of the films constructed in the presence of 0.5 M NaCl and 0.5 M NaSCN.  相似文献

Multilayer films were assembled from a copolymer containing both weakly and strongly charged pendant groups, poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid-co-maleic acid) (PSSMA), deposited in alternation with poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH). The strongly charged groups (styrene sulfonate, SS) are expected to form electrostatic linkages (to enhance film stability), while the weakly charged groups (maleic acid, MA) can alter multilayer film properties because they are responsive to external pH changes. In this study, we varied several assembly conditions such as pH, SS/MA ratio in PSSMA, and the ionic strength of the polyelectrolyte solutions. The multilayer films were also treated by immersion into pH 2 and 11 solutions after assembly. Quartz crystal microgravimetry and UV-visible spectrophotometry showed that the thickness of PSSMA/PAH multilayers decreases with increasing assembly pH regardless of whether salt was present in the polyelectrolyte solutions. When no salt was added, the multilayers are thinner, smoother, and grow less regularly. Atomic force microscopy images indicate that the presence of salt in polyelectrolyte solutions results in rougher surface morphologies, and this effect is especially significant in multilayers assembled at pH 2 and pH 11. When both polyelectrolytes are adsorbed at conditions where they are highly charged, salt was necessary to promote regular multilayer growth. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy studies show that the carboxylic acids in the multilayers are essentially ionized when assembled from different pHs in 0.5 M sodium chloride solutions, whereas some carboxylic acids remain protonated in the multilayers assembled from solutions with no added salt. This resulted in different pH stability regimes when the multilayers were exposed to different pH solutions, post assembly.  相似文献

Two combinations of sodium poly(4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) of different chain length and charge density are employed to construct multilayer films. The polyelectrolytes are assembled layer-by-layer on colloidal particles in the absence of salt. We have investigated the formation and electrical characteristics of the films by using electric light scattering technique. The results show that the film thickness is independent of the chain length when fully charged PAH (at pH 4.6) is combined with fully charged PSS. When the films are prepared with less charged PAH (at pH 6.7) and fully charged PSS, lower thickness is found for the film with shorter polymer chains. In all cases, the thickness increment realized on addition of the polymer with lower molar concentration is partially lost on exposure to the solution with higher concentration of the oppositely charged partner. When the film growth is regular (at equal molar concentrations of the fully charged polyelectrolytes), the ratio of PSS to PAH charge, estimated from the electro-optical effect values, exceeds 1. The electro-optical effect is also higher for the films ending with PSS when fully charged PSS is combined with less charged PAH (at pH 6.7). This reveals the key role of the charge in the last-adsorbed layer for the electro-optical behavior of the whole film.  相似文献
