A turbulent channel flow and the flow around a cubic obstacle are calculated by the moving particle semi‐implicit method with the subparticle‐scale turbulent model and a wall model, which is based on the zero equation RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier‐Stokes). The wall model is useful in practical problems that often involve high Reynolds numbers and wall turbulence, because it is difficult to keep high resolution in the near‐wall region in particle simulation. A turbulent channel flow is calculated by the present method to validate our wall model. The mean velocity distribution agrees with the log‐law velocity profile near the wall. Statistical values are also the same order and tendency as experimental results with emulating viscous layer by the wall model. We also investigated the influence of numerical oscillations on turbulence analysis in using the moving particle semi‐implicit method. Finally, the turbulent flow around a cubic obstacle is calculated by the present method to demonstrate capability of calculating practical turbulent flows. Three characteristic eddies appear in front of, over, and in the back of the cube both in our calculation and the experimental result that was obtained by Martinuzzi and Tropea. Mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles are predicted in the same order and have similar tendency as the experimental result. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This article presents a numerical investigation of turbulent flow in an axisymmetric separated and reattached flow over a longitudinal blunt circular cylinder. The governing equations were discretized by the finite-volume method and SIMPLER method was applied to solve the equations on a staggered grid. The turbulent flow was numerically simulated using the standard k–ε, Abe–Kondoh–Nagano (AKN) and Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence models. The comparisons made between numerical results and experimental measurements showed that the SST model is superior to other models in the present calculation.Computations were performed for three different Reynolds numbers of 6000, 10 000 and 20 000 based on the cylinder diameter. To our knowledge, this study represents the first numerical investigation of the present flow configuration. The computational results were validated with the available experimental data of reattachment length, mean velocity distribution and wall static pressure coefficient in the turbulent blunt circular cylinder flows. Further, other characteristics of the flow, such as turbulent kinetic energy, pressure, streamlines, and the velocity vectors are discussed.The results show that the main characteristics of the turbulence flow in the separation region, such as reattachment length or velocity profiles, are nearly independent of the Reynolds number. The obtained results showed that a secondary separation bubble may appear in the main separation bubble near the leading edge. Furthermore, it was found that the turbulent kinetic energy has a large effect on the formation of the secondary bubble.  相似文献

This experimental study investigated the mean velocity profiles, skin friction and turbulent characteristics of a gravel bed over a wide range of roughness using an acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV). The median diameter of bed material ranged from 2 to 40 mm, and the normalized roughness heights ranged from 47 to 4,881 mm. The flow regime was fully developed turbulence with a Reynolds number in the range of 4.2 × 104–9.86 × 104. All velocity curves exhibited logarithmic distributions, and the log-law region was influenced greatly by both the roughness and the Reynolds number. Moreover, the roughness of the gravel bed exerted a strong effect on Reynolds stress, and the turbulence tended towards isotropic with increasing roughness. Using statistical analyses, the third-order turbulence moments, sweep, and ejection motions were also examined. The results of this experimental analysis present a contrast to the classical wall similarity hypothesis.  相似文献

Previous work by the authors (Flack and Schultz, 2010) has identified the root-mean-square roughness height, krms, and the skewness, Sk, of the surface elevation distribution as important parameters in scaling the skin-friction drag on rough surfaces. In this study, three surfaces are tested in turbulent boundary layer flow at a friction Reynolds number, Reτ = 1600–2200. All the surfaces have similar root-mean-square roughness height, while the skewness is varied. Measurements are presented using both two-component LDV and PIV. The results show the anticipated trend of increasing skin-friction drag with increasing skewness. The largest increase in drag occurs going from negative skewness to zero skewness with a more modest increase going from zero to positive skewness. Some differences in the mean velocity and Reynolds stress profiles are observed for the three surfaces. However, these differences are confined to a region close to the rough surface, and the mean velocity and Reynolds stress profiles collapse away from the wall when scaled in outer variables. The turbulence structure as documented through two-point spatial correlations of velocity is also observed to be very similar over the three surfaces. These results support Townsend’s (1976) concept of outer-layer similarity that the wall boundary condition exerts no direct influence on the turbulence structure away from the wall except in setting the velocity and length scales for the outer layer.  相似文献

The behavior of a non-buoyant circular water jet discharged from a contraction nozzle was experimentally investigated. In this experiment, the Reynolds number of the jet, based on the mean velocity results obtained by particle image velocimetry (PIV), ranged from 177 to 5,142. From the experimental results, we found that the cross-sectional profile of the axial velocity for a laminar flow near the nozzle did not show a top-hat distribution, whereas the profiles with Reynolds number higher than 437 were almost top-hat. The length of the zone of flow establishment (ZFE) was found to decrease with increasing Reynolds number. The measured centerline velocity decayed more rapidly and, consequently, approached the theoretical equation earlier near the nozzle as the Reynolds number increased. The decay constant for the centerline velocity of the turbulent cases was relatively lower than that discovered in theory. It is assumed that this probably resulted from the use of the contraction nozzle. Verifying the similarity of the lateral velocity profiles demonstrated that the Gaussian curve was properly approximated only for the turbulent jets and not for the laminar or transitional flows. The jet half width seldom grew for the laminar or transitional flows, whereas it grew with increasing axial distance for the turbulent flows. The spreading rates for the turbulent flows gradually decreased with increasing Reynolds number. The normalized turbulence intensity along the jet centerline increased more rapidly with the axial distance as the Reynolds number increased, and tended to the constant values proposed by previous investigators. The Reynolds shear stress levels were also found to increase as the Reynolds number increased for the turbulent jets.  相似文献

The aim of the present work is to investigate the role of intense Reynolds shear-stress events in the generation of the secondary flow in turbulent ducts. We consider the connected regions of flow where the product of the instantaneous fluctuations of two velocity components is higher than a threshold based on the long-time turbulence statistics, in the spirit of the three-dimensional quadrant analysis proposed by Lozano-Durán et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 694, 2012, pp. 100–130). We examine both the geometrical properties of these structures and their contribution to the mean in-plane velocity components, and we perfom a comparison with turbulent channel flow at similar Reynolds number. The contribution to a certain mean quantity is defined as the ensemble average over the detected coherent structures, weighted with their own occupied volume fraction. In the core region of the duct, the contribution of intense events to the wall-normal component of the mean velocity is in very good agreement with that in the channel, despite the presence of the secondary flow in the former. Additionally, the shapes of the three-dimensional objects do not differ significantly in both flows. In the corner region of the duct, the proximity of the walls affects both the geometrical properties of the coherent structures and the contribution to the mean component of the vertical velocity. However, such contribution is less relevant than that of the complementary portion of the flow not included in such objects. Our results show that strong Reynolds shear-stress events are affected by the presence of a corner but, despite the important role of these structures in the dynamics of wall-bounded turbulent flows, their contribution to the secondary flow is relatively low, both in the core and in the corner.  相似文献

The present paper addresses experimental studies of Reynolds number effects on a turbulent boundary layer with separation, reattachment, and recovery. A momentum thickness Reynolds number varies from 1,100 to 20,100 with a wind tunnel enclosed in a pressure vessel by varying the air density and wind tunnel speed. A custom-built, high-resolution laser Doppler anemometer provides fully resolved turbulence measurements over the full Reynolds number range. The experiments show that the mean flow is at most a very weak function of Reynolds number while turbulence quantities strongly depend on Reynolds number. Roller vortices are generated in the separated shear layer caused by the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability. Empirical Reynolds number scalings for the mean velocity and Reynolds stresses are proposed for the upstream boundary layer, the separated region, and the recovery region. The inflectional instability plays a critical role in the scaling in the separated region. The near-wall flow recovers quickly downstream of reattachment even if the outer layer is far from an equilibrium state. As a result, a stress equilibrium layer where a flat-plate boundary layer scaling is valid develops in the recovery region and grows outward moving downstream.  相似文献

Laser Doppler velocity measurements are carried out in a turbulent boundary layer subjected to concentrated wall suction (through a porous strip). The measurements are taken over a longitudinal distance of 9× the incoming boundary layer thickness ahead of the suction strip. The mean and rms velocity profiles are affected substantially by suction. Two-point measurements show that the streamwise and wall-normal autocorrelations of the streamwise velocity are reduced by suction. It is found that suction alters the redistribution of the turbulent kinetic energy k between its components. Relative to the no-suction case, the longitudinal Reynolds stress contributes more to k than the other two normal Reynolds stresses; in the outer region, its contribution is reduced which suggests structural changes in the boundary layer. This is observed in the anisotropy of the Reynolds stresses, which depart from the non-disturbed boundary layer. With suction, the anisotropy level in the near-wall region appears to be stronger than that of the undisturbed layer. It is argued that the mean shear induced by suction on the flow is responsible for the alteration of the anisotropy. The variation of the anisotropy of the layer will make the development of a turbulence model quite difficult for the flow behind suction. In that respect, a turbulence model will need to reproduce well the effects of suction on the boundary layer, if the model is to capture the effect of suction on the anisotropy of the Reynolds stresses.  相似文献

An experimental investigation is presented of a turbulent jet issuing from a round sharp-edged orifice plate (OP) into effectively unbounded surroundings. Planar measurements of velocity were conducted using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) in the near and transition regions. The Reynolds number, based on the jet initial diameter and velocity, is approximately 72,000. The instantaneous and mean velocities, Reynolds normal and shear stresses were obtained. The centerline velocity decay and the half-velocity radius were derived from the mean velocity. It is revealed that primary coherent structures occur in the near field of the OP jet and that they are typically distributed asymmetrically with respect to the nozzle axis. Comparison of the present PIV and previous hot-wire measurements for the OP jet suggests that high initial turbulence intensity leads to reduced rates of decay and spread of the mean flow field and moreover a lower rate of variation of the turbulence intensity. Results also show that self-similarity of the mean flow is well established from the transition region while the turbulent statistics are far from self-similar within the measured range to 16 diameters.  相似文献

This study investigates numerically the turbulent flow and heat transfer characteristics of a T-junction mixing, where a porous media flow is vertically discharged in a 3D fully developed channel flow. The fluid equations for the porous medium are solved in a pore structure level using an Speziale, Sarkar and Gatski turbulence model and validated with open literature data. Overall, two types of porous structures, consisted of square pores, are investigated over a wide range of Reynolds numbers: an in-line and a staggered pore structure arrangement. The flow patterns, including the reattachment length in the channel, the velocity field inside the porous medium as well as the fluctuation velocity at the interface, are found to be strongly affected by the velocity ratio between the transversely interacting flow streams. In addition, the heat transfer examination of the flow domain reveals that the temperature distribution in the porous structure is more uniform for the staggered array. The local heat transfer distributions inside the porous structure are also studied, and the general heat transfer rates are correlated in terms of area-averaged Nusselt number accounting for the effects of Reynolds number, velocity ratio as well as the geometrical arrangement of the porous structures.  相似文献

An experimental investigation is performed on a fully developed turbulent channel flow with local injection through a porous strip. The Reynolds number based on the channel half-width was set to 5000. In addition to the no blowing case, measurements are made for three different blowing rates σ = 0.22, 0.36 and 0.58 (where σ is the ratio of momentum flux gain due to the blowing and momentum flux of the incoming channel flow). Measurements carried out with hot-wire anemometry reveal that injection strongly affects both the velocity profiles and the turbulence characteristics. The injection decreases the skin friction coefficient and increases all the Reynolds stresses downstream the blowing strip. The turbulence structure and the bursting phenomena were examined using space-time correlations measurements and conditional analysis. It is found that the injection increases the frequency of occurrence of the bursts.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of measurements and numerical predictions of turbulent cross-flow in a staggered tube bundle. The bundle consists of transverse and longitudinal pitch-to-diameter ratios of 3.8 and 2.1, respectively. The experiments were conducted using a particle image velocimetry technique, in a flow of water in a channel at a Reynolds number of 9300 based on the inlet velocity and the tube diameter. A commercial CFD code, ANSYS CFX V10.0, is used to predict the turbulent flow in the bundle. The steady and isothermal Reynolds–Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations were used to predict the turbulent flow using each of the following four turbulence models: a k-epsilon, a standard k-omega, a k-omega-based shear stress transport, and an epsilon-based second moment closure. The epsilon-based models used a scalable wall function and the omega-based models used a wall treatment that switches automatically between low-Reynolds and standard wall function formulations.

The experimental results revealed extremely high levels of turbulence production by the normal stresses, as well as regions of negative turbulence production. The convective transport by mean flow and turbulent diffusion were observed to be significantly higher than in classical turbulent boundary layers. As a result, turbulence production is generally not in equilibrium with its dissipation rate. In spite of these characteristics, it was observed that the Reynolds normal stresses approximated from the k-based two-equation models were in a closer agreement with experiments than values obtained from the second moment closure. The results show that none of the turbulence models was able to consistently reproduce the mean and turbulent quantities reasonably well. The omega-based models predicted the mean velocities better in the developing region while the epsilon-based models gave better results in the region where the flow is becoming spatially periodic.  相似文献

An experimental investigation of water flow through an aluminum rectangular microchannel with a hydraulic diameter of 169 μm was conducted over a Reynolds number (based upon mean velocity and hydraulic diameter) range from 230 to 4,740. Pressure measurements were simultaneously acquired at eight different axial locations within the channel along with pressure measurements in the inlet and outlet ports. The 27 μm pressure taps were more densely packed near the channel entrance in order to study the developing flow region. The average Poiseuille number for laminar flows was 86.4, which is in excellent agreement with the theoretical value of 86.9. The average critical Reynolds number was found to be 2,370. The limited turbulent friction factor data were in good agreement with the Haaland equation. The inlet to the channel was not well rounded and pressure distributions near the channel entrance show a region of pressure recovery. Entrance length and some minor loss coefficient data were not in agreement with theory, but the cause of these deviations were primarily a function of the inlet geometry and pressure recovery in the microchannel rather than a microscale effect.  相似文献

 The developing turbulent region of a round jet was investigated using an improved implementation of digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV). The two-dimensional flow field in planes normal and parallel to the axial velocity was measured at locations between 15 and 30 diameters downstream, for two Reynolds numbers of 5500 and 16,000. The study consisted of instantaneous snapshots of the velocity and vorticity fields as well as measurements of velocity correlations up to third order. In this regime, the Reynolds number had a significant effect on both the instantaneous flow structure and the profiles of mean velocity across the jet. Coherent streamwise structures were present in the jet core for the lower Reynolds number. Additional structures whose evolution was governed by time scales two orders of magnitude larger than the convective scale inside the jet were observed in the entrainment field. The velocity correlations provided further support for the validity of DPIV turbulence measurements. The data was consistent with the equations of motion and momentum was conserved. DPIV measurements of turbulent kinetic energy components agreed with the hot-wire measurements of previous studies. Received: 27 November 1996/Accepted: 14 July 1997  相似文献

Detailed Laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) measurements have been carried out in a turbulent rectangular channel flow with one rough wall. The roughness elements of two-dimensional spanwise 120° V-shaped grooves are periodically arranged with different depths and pitches. The Reynolds number based on the centerline velocity, and the channel half height ranges from 2,740 to 20,000. The comparisons of turbulence statistics over smooth and rough walls indicate that the present roughness leads to a significant change in the turbulence both in the inner and in the outer flow. Particularly, the distribution density of the grooves is a key parameter to evaluate the effect of roughness. The low-Reynolds-number dependence of turbulence statistics is also observed. The rough walls with the same pitch-to-depth ratio exhibit the equivalent roughness function under the corresponding Reynolds numbers. The disagreement of velocity defect profiles between smooth and rough walls challenges the defect universal law. The variations of the turbulence stresses and Reynolds shear stress decomposition in the outer layer suggest that the turbulent motions may be modified by the present grooves. The importance of sweep events for the present groove-roughened walls is reflected by the differences in relative contribution to Reynolds shear stress from each quadrant and the higher-order moments over smooth and rough walls.  相似文献

In the present study, an axisymmetric turbulent boundary layer growing on a cylinder is investigated experimentally using hot wire anemometry. The combined effects of transverse curvature as well as low Reynolds number on the mean and turbulent flow quantities are studied. The measurements include the mean velocity, turbulence intensity, skewness and flatness factors in addition to wall shear stress. The results are presented separately for the near wall region and the outer region using dimensionless parameters suitable for each case. They are also compared with the results available in the open literature.The present investigation revealed that the mean velocity in near wall region is similar to other simple turbulent flows (flat plate boundary layer, pipe and channel flows); but it differs in the logarithmic and outer regions. Further, for dimensionless moments of higher orders, such as skewness and flatness factors, the main effects of the low Reynolds number and the transverse curvature are present in the near wall region as well as the outer region.  相似文献

The von Karman length scale is able to reflect the size of the local turbulence structure. However, it is not suitable for the near wall region of wall-bounded flows, for its value is almost infinite there. In the present study, a simple and novel length scale combining the wall distance and the von Karman length scale is proposed by introducing a structural function. The new length scale becomes the von Karman length scale once local unsteady structures are detected. The proposed method is adopted in a series of turbulent channel flows at different Reynolds numbers. The results show that the proposed length scale with the structural function can precisely simulate turbulence at high Reynolds numbers, even with a coarse grid resolution.  相似文献

A turbulent separation-reattachment flow in a two-dimensional asymmetrical curved-wall diffuser is studied by a two-dimensional laser doppler velocimeter. The turbulent boundary layer separates on the lower curved wall under strong pressure gradient and then reattaches on a parallel channel. At the inlet of the diffuser, Reynolds number based on the diffuser height is 1.2×105 and the velocity is 25.2m/s. The results of experiments are presented and analyzed in new defined streamline-aligned coordinates. The experiment shows that after Transitory Detachment Reynolds shear stress is negative in the near-wall backflow region. Their characteristics are approximately the same as in simple turbulent shear layers near the maximum Reynolds shear stress. A scale is formed using the maximum Reynolds shear stresses. It is found that a Reynolds shear stress similarity exists from separation to reattachment and the Schofield-Perry velocity law exists in the forward shear flow. Both profiles are used in the experimental work that leads to the design of a new eddy-viscosity model. The length scale is taken from that developed by Schofield and Perry. The composite velocity scale is formed by the maximum Reynolds shear stress and the Schofield-Perry velocity scale as well as the edge velocity of the boundary layer. The results of these experiments are presented in this paper.  相似文献

利用层析TRPIV测量水洞中平板湍流边界层3D-3C速度场的高分辨率时间序列数据库. 提出了空间局部平均多尺度速度结构函数的新概念, 描述湍流多尺度涡结构的空间拉伸、压缩、剪切变形和旋转. 用空间局部平均多尺度速度结构函数对湍流脉动速度进行了空间多尺度分解. 用空间流向局部平均多尺度速度结构函数, 根据湍流多尺度涡结构在流向的拉伸和压缩物理特征, 提出了新的湍流相干结构条件采样方法, 检测并提取了层析TRPIV数据中相干结构“喷射”和“扫掠”事件中的脉动速度、平均速度变形率、雷诺应力等物理量的空间拓扑形态. 通过研究平均速度变形率各分量与雷诺应力各分量之间的空间相位差异,肯定了壁湍流相干结构雷诺应力各向异性复涡黏模型的合理性.   相似文献
