A numerical investigation of nonlinear switching in plasmonic directional couplers made of two dielectric slab waveguides with metallic claddings is presented. We assume Kerr-nonlinear dielectric and study the influence of geometrical parameters, metallic losses, and metal nonlinearities on coupler characteristics. We observe a general trade-off between losses and nonlinearity levels required for the switching operation. Underlying physical mechanisms that affect the coupler performance are discussed. The obtained results can be useful in design and optimization of the nonlinear plasmonic couplers.  相似文献

An efficient computer-aided solution procedure based on the finite-element method is developed for the analysis of TM waves in slab uniaxial waveguides. In this approach, self-consistent solutions are obtained by using a simple iterative scheme. Propagation constants and field profiles for TM guided waves in a uniaxial planar waveguide are given and compared with analytical results.  相似文献

Linear and nonlinear localized modes of a slab waveguide with distributed gain and loss are studied. The structure is an optical analog of parity-time symmetric potentials in quantum mechanics. Such waveguide structures support stable localized modes. The explicit equation for the propagation constant of linear modes is obtained. The existence of stable nonlinear modes in such waveguides is demonstrated. Bend losses in such structures are analyzed.  相似文献

本文用有限元法分析了任意非线性介质的多量子阱(MQW)光波导中传输与总光功率有关的TM波性质。用简单的迭代过程得到目洽解。给出了MQW波导具有不同非线性机理时,非线性TM波的色散关系、磁场(Hx)以及二个电场(Ey和Ez)的分布。结果表明:分子取向机理的光波导对非线性TM模存在不同的功率限制作用。  相似文献

The transmission line model has been modified in order to evaluate nonlinear waves guided by optical fibers with complex refractive index. It is proven that the proposed model is able to tackle fibers with losses or gain, under the presence of arbitrary nonlinearity. The method is applied for the calculation of weakly guided lossy nonlinear optical fibers considering various configurations and Kerr nonlinearity. Power depended propagation characteristics have been calculated and plotted for the fundamental mode and the potential use of the method in optical fiber amplifiers with index nonlinearity is also discussed.  相似文献

Local mode theory for two counterpropagating waves in nonlinear waveguides is formulated. This model allows us to describe the transverse effects as well as the counterpropagating waves interaction in optical waveguides. The results are applied to the analysis of the nonlinear Fabry-Perot waveguide resonator and are compared with the conventional coupled mode theory solution.  相似文献

This article concerns the generation and properties of double harmonics in nonlinear isotropic waveguides of complex cross-section. Analytical solutions of nonlinear Rayleigh-Lamb waves and rod waves have been known for some time. These solutions explain the phenomenon of cumulative double harmonic generation of guided waves. These solutions, however, are only applicable to simple geometries. This paper combines the general approach of the analytical solutions with semi-analytical finite element models to generalize the method to more complex geometries, specifically waveguides with arbitrary cross-sections. Supporting comparisons with analytical solutions are presented for simple cases. This is followed by the study of the case of a rail track. One reason for studying nonlinear guided waves in rails is the potential measurement of thermal stresses in welded rail.  相似文献

The coupling of surface waves by two crossed dielectric slab sections with curved transition waveguides is investigated by the method of staircase approximation. the coupling problem of the nonuniform structure is analyzed in terms of the scattering of incident surface wave by the crossed structure as a whole. The scattering characteristics of the crossed waveguides are calculated with a particular attention directed to the effect of radiation due to bending of the curved transition waveguides on coupling properties of the structure. Some useful guidelines for the design of the coupling structures are thereby suggested.  相似文献

The intensity-dependent characteristics of nonlinear TE and TM waves in a thin film bounded by lossy nonlinear media are analysed by the finite-element method. In this approach, the power-dependent complex propagation constants and local complex electromagnetic field distributions of lossy nonlinear TE and TM waves are obtained directly from the given lossy nonlinear waveguides, without any approximations. Numerical results for these modes in a lossy nonlinear waveguiding system with different absorption coefficients are given. It is shown that the complex dispersion relations, for both TE and TM modes, are strongly power dependent.  相似文献

A general method for analyzing the multilayer metamaterial optical waveguides with the Kerr-type nonlinear cladding was proposed. To prove the accuracy of the proposed general method, a degenerated example was introduced. The analytical and numerical results show excellent agreement. The similar process can also be used to analyze TM waves propagating in the multilayer metamaterial waveguide structure with the Kerr-type nonlinear cladding.  相似文献

随着AWG型器件在光通信系统中的大规模应用,对低成本AWG芯片的需求越来越多。在各种降成本方案中,减小AWG芯片的尺寸是最有效的方法之一。本文介绍了一种新型小尺寸低折射率差硅基二氧化硅阵列波导光栅(AWG)的设计。在该AWG中,输入波导/输出波导与平板波导连接的部分制作成两侧为空气槽的高折射率差波导,所以在与输出平板波导连接处的相邻输出波导间距较小,这样可以在设计上缩短平板波导的长度、减少阵列波导的数量,实现较小的AWG芯片尺寸。该AWG的其它部分,如输入/输出波导与光纤耦合的部分、阵列波导光栅等均采用常规的低折射率波导工艺,所以就同时具有与常规的低折射率波导AWG相同的优点:如低耦合损耗、较好的串扰以及光学特性等。根据这个原理,设计了一种40通道100 GHz频率间隔的低折射率差硅基二氧化硅AWG,其芯片尺寸只有23.88 mm?10.5 mm,是传统相同材料制作的AWG尺寸的1/6。  相似文献

We show that waveguides with a dielectric core and a lossy metamaterial cladding (metamaterial-dielectric guides) can support hybrid ordinary-surface modes previously only known for metal-dielectric waveguides. These hybrid modes are potentially useful for frequency filtering applications as sharp changes in field attenuation occur at tailorable frequencies. Our results also show that the surface modes of a metamaterial-dielectric waveguide with comparable electric and magnetic losses can be less lossy than the surface modes of an analogous metal-dielectric waveguide with electric losses alone. Through a characterization of both slab and cylindrical metamaterial-dielectric guides, we find that the surface modes of the cylindrical guides show promise as candidates for all-optical control of low-intensity pulses.  相似文献

在绝缘层上的硅材料上制作了四种具有不同输入输出结构的星形耦合器并进行了测试,对脊形波导与平板波导相互过渡时过渡区的损耗问题进行了研究和讨论,计算得到在所使用的材料参量下利用锥形结构可以得到1dB左右的最小损耗,这一损耗是由于脊型波导与平板波导间的模式失配造成的。以文献中的实验数据为出发点,分析了脊形波导的偏振问题,并通过对脊型波导器件层厚度、脊高、脊宽进行优化设计,得到了不同偏振模式的有效折射率差仅为10^-5量级的单模脊型波导结构,这样的偏振效应在器件设计中可以忽略。  相似文献

Spatial solitary waves carried by a TE mode in planar optical waveguides with Kerr-type of nonlinearity are investigated based on a modified nonlinear (1 + 1) Schrödinger equation. Looking for effects instigated by the spatial inhomogeneity of the nonlinear polarization, the nonzero divE-term is taken into account in the nonlinear guided wave equation together with the nonparaxial approach and vector model. It is shown that, at self-focusing of beams in a (1 + 1) geometry, the effect coming out from the divergence term predominates over modifications related to the nonparaxial vector model. This term is interpreted as nonlinearly induced diffraction which plays the role of an effective saturation. Analytical solutions supported by numerical results are found.  相似文献
