Abstract

The optical characteristics of the TE and TM guided modes of a multilayer anisotropic two-dimensional waveguide are investigated by using the field component transformation matrix, and also taking into account the substrate intrinsic dispersion. The embedded thin metal layer effects on the propagation constant for both lossless approximated and exact solutions are presented. The lossless approach is accurate enough for the TE waves, but it is not for the TM ones, which exhibit changes of about 10?6 for the equivalent index. The TM modes also present attenuation constant changes between the lossy and weakly-lossy solutions of the order of 9 dB/cm. Several complex field component mappings are drawn, and the surface plasma waves are also examined.  相似文献

This study presents the electromagnetic wave propagation through the frequency-dispersive and lossy double-negative slab embedded between two different semi-infinite media. The double-negative slab is realized by using two models, the Lorentz and Drude medium models. The properties and the required equations for the frequency-dispersive and lossy double-negative slab, the Lorentz medium and Drude medium are given in detail. After the construction of the problem, the reflection and transmission coefficients are derived for both TE and TM waves. Then, the reflected, transmitted and loss powers are determined using these coefficients. Finally, in the numerical results, the mentioned powers for TE and TM waves are computed and illustrated as a function of the incidence angle, the frequency and the slab thickness when the damping frequency changes.  相似文献

We investigate theoretically the characteristics of surface waves in uniaxially anisotropic left-handed materials. The constraints for the existence of TE and TM polarized surface waves in uniaxially anisotropic left-handed materials are identified. We discuss mainly whether TE and TM polarized surface modes may coexist in the same frequency domain at the interface between one isotropic regular medium and another uniaxially anisotropic left-handed medium. It is shown that the answer to the coexistence of TE and TM surface modes is really positive. The Poynting vector and the density of energy associated with surface modes are calculated. Depending on the system parameters either TE or TM surface modes has the time averaged Poynting vector directed opposite or same to the mode phase velocity. In the presence of anisotropy, negative refraction does not need to be left-handed. We show that the characteristics of surface waves in uniaxially anisotropic left-handed media are significantly different from that in isotropic left-handed media.  相似文献

The conditions for the existence of TE and TM polarized surface waves in biaxially anisotropic left-handed materials are identified, respectively. The Poynting vector and the energy density associated with surface modes are calculated. Depending on the system parameters, either TE or TM surface modes can have the time averaged Poynting vector directed to or opposite to the mode phase velocity. The dispersion relations and cut-off frequencies for the appropriate modes existing inside the relativistically moving lossy isotropic plasma waveguide are studied and are found to depend on waveguide dimensions, plasma-parameters and the drift velocity of plasma medium. The field as well as power flow are also studied in detail and it is found that the fields as well as power flow for TE modes are unchanged while for TM modes they are modified depending on the drift velocity of the plasma medium. The results are compared with those obtained for the case of lossless relativistically moving and lossy stationary plasma waveguides.  相似文献

Float glasses have tin-diffused layers on one side. These layers show an optical waveguide effect caused by refractive index gradients in the layer. Surface stress, caused by tempering, gives different refractive index distribution for TM and TE waves via the stress birefringence effect. Non-destructive and rapid stress determination is possible by observing the effective index distributions of propagating modes in TM and TE waves.  相似文献

The bi-directional mode expansion propagation algorithm (BEP) is known to be an accurate and efficient method for modelling field distribution in high-index contrast waveguide structures with strong back-reflections like Bragg gratings and photonic crystals. The main difficulty of this method is that for lossy structures, the propagation constants of modes are to be searched in the complex plane. To speed-up this procedure, a two-step algorithm for eigenmode calculation based on the expansion into the modes of an empty metallic waveguide has recently been proposed. Proper truncation rules possessing good convergence of the expansion method for both TE and TM modes have also been recently published. In this contribution, both these approaches are combined in the development of an extremely simple version of the two-dimensional BEP method that makes use of the field expansion into the eigenmodes of a parallel-plate waveguide. The method is strictly reciprocal and appeared to be computationally reliable also for strongly lossy structures. High numerical stability is ensured using the scattering matrix formalism, and an efficient method of calculating Bloch modes for symmetric as well as asymmetric periodic waveguide structures is adopted. A wide range of applicability of the method is demonstrated by a few examples.  相似文献

The nonlinear equations of photorefractive surface waves (PR SWs) with diffusion mechanism are established and calculated numerically for both TE mode and TM mode and their coupling for the first time. The characteristics of TE mode and TM mode are analyzed, such as propagation constants, spatial distribution, penetration depths etc. For relative larger propagation constant, most of the surface wave energy is concentrated on the Ax component of TM mode, and the penetration depth of Ay of TE mode is always larger than that of Ax of TM mode because electro-optical coefficient r13 is always smaller than r33 in general PRC. As a result, the energy of the PR SW is better confined near the surface for TM mode than that for TE mode. When both TE and TM modes PR SWs are present, they will be coupled drastically and the Ax component of TM mode and Ay component of TE mode resonate in the volume of PR medium. As a result, the PR SWs cannot remain decay, and the light energy can not be confined near the surface steadily and the modes are destroyed. The results provide the theoretical instructions and are very significant to generate steady and high density PR SW in practice.  相似文献

We have presented a discussion on the guided waves in the indefinite-medium waveguides. The characteristic equations describing TE and TM guided waves have been derived. Aiming mainly at the TE guided waves, we have analyzed the existence conditions for the guided and surface modes for four distinct cases, respectively. A number of exotic properties have been revealed in such waveguides, such as the coexistence of forward and backward modes, the absence of fundamental modes, the existence of surface modes and the relaxed requirements for waveguide core constitutive parameters. Propagation of light in a two-channel ferromagnetic tunnel-coupled optical waveguide is analyzed in the case of weak influence of magneto-optical nonlinear refraction due to the inverse Faraday effect. A general solution is obtained under the assumption that tunnel coupling constants for TE and TM modes are close to each other. Investigation of polarization dependence revealed periodic energy exchange between normal waves, regimes of aperiodic energy transfer into one of the normal waves at each polarization, and new types of sudden self-switching of the output radiation from one normal wave to the other, as well as from one waveguide to the other. Characteristic parameters of the effects are estimated.  相似文献

We present the dispersion relation of guided-mode resonances in planar periodic waveguides, both for s-polarized (TF, mode) and p-polarized (TM mode) incident waves. For a fixed homogeneous planar waveguide, dispersion curves of the TE eigenmode cannot cross that of the TM eigenmode at all. That is to say, at a certain wavelength, TE and TM modes cannot be excited with the same propagation constant. Due to Bragg reflection in the planar periodic waveguide, dispersion curves of the TE leaky mode may intersect with that of the TM leaky mode in the first Brillouin zone. We employ these intersections to achieve polarization-independent guided-mode resonance filters.  相似文献

Surface waves that propagate along the interface between an isotropic linear or nonlinear (of the Kerr type) dielectric and a topological insulator have been studied theoretically. A dispersion relation for surface waves, which are represented by superpositions of TE and TM waves, has been obtained. This hybridization occurs because, upon passage through the interface, the polarization of a surface wave changes, which is caused by an induced surface current (which is transverse to the electric field vector of the wave). The surface current of this kind is characteristic of topological insulators. Expressions for the energy flux transferred by a surface wave have been given.  相似文献

We propose a polarization splitter (PS) based on the slow light effect in a three-layer waveguide that consists of left-handed material (LHM) and dielectric layers with no birefringence. Transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) waves can be split by the intrinsic configuration of permittivity and permeability of LHM and dielectric layers. Simulation results are given to discuss the influence of electromagnetic parameters on the properties of our PS, and the capture and release of TE or TM waves are also realized in our PS which provides a flexible method to modulate the switching of different polarization waves.  相似文献

系统研究了负μ材料(MNG)作为包层的对称三层平板波导的传输特性. 研究发现,这种波导既支持快波的传播,又支持TE0,TE1模式的慢波传输. 其模式特性不同于左手介质波导和传统介质波导,导模存在的模折射率范围要比它们的大. MNG波导的TE0快波模缺失,且TEm模(m>1)的传播常数大于TMm模的传播常数. TEm模具有双模特征,且与波导的结构参数密切相关,导致波导中的净能流出现负值. 关键词: 单负介质 平板波导 快波与慢波 传播常数  相似文献

本文用有限元法分析了任意非线性介质的多量子阱(MQW)光波导中传输与总光功率有关的TM波性质。用简单的迭代过程得到目洽解。给出了MQW波导具有不同非线性机理时,非线性TM波的色散关系、磁场(Hx)以及二个电场(Ey和Ez)的分布。结果表明:分子取向机理的光波导对非线性TM模存在不同的功率限制作用。  相似文献
