An experimental investigation has been undertaken to understand the phase split of nitrogen gas/non-Newtonian liquid two-phase flow passing through a 0.5 mm T-junction that oriented horizontally. Four different liquids, including water and aqueous solutions of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) with different mass concentrations of 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 wt%, were employed. Rheology experiments showed that different from water, CMC solutions in this study are pseudoplastic non-Newtonian fluid whose viscosity decreases with increasing the shear rate. The inlet flow patterns were observed to be slug flow, slug–annular flow and annular flow. The fraction of liquid taken off at the side arm for nitrogen gas/non-Newtonian liquid systems is found to be higher than that for nitrogen gas/Newtonian liquid systems in all inlet flow patterns. In addition, with increasing the pseudoplasticity of the liquid phase, the side arm liquid taken off increases, but the increasing degree varies with each flow pattern. For annular flow, the increasing degree is much greater than those for slug and slug–annular flows.  相似文献

As the oil or gas exploration and development activities in deep and ultra- deep waters become more and more, encountering gas hydrate bearing sediments (HBS) is almost inevitable. The variation in temperature and pressure can destabilize gas hydrate in nearby formation around the borehole, which may reduce the strength of the formation and result in wellbore instability. A non-isothermal, transient, two-phase, and fluid-solid coupling mathematical model is proposed to simulate the complex stability performance of a wellbore drilled in HBS. In the model, the phase transition of hydrate dissociation, the heat exchange between drilling fluid and formation, the change of mechanical and petrophysical properties, the gas-water two-phase seepage, and its interaction with rock deformation are considered. A finite element simulator is developed, and the impact of drilling mud on wellbore instability in HBS is simulated. Results indicate that the re- duction in pressure and the increase in temperature of the drilling fluid can accelerate hydrate decomposition and lead to mechanical properties getting worse tremendously. The cohesion decreases by 25% when the hydrate totally dissociates in HBS. This easily causes the wellbore instability accordingly. In the first two hours after the formation is drilled, the regions of hydrate dissociation and wellbore instability extend quickly. Then, with the soaking time of drilling fluid increasing, the regions enlarge little. Choosing the low temperature drilling fluid and increasing the drilling mud pressure appropriately can benefit the wellbore stability of HBS. The established model turns out to be an efficient tool in numerical studies of the hydrate dissociation behavior and wellbore stability of HBS.  相似文献

Flow pattern, void fraction and slug rise velocity on counter-current two-phase flow in a vertical round tube with wire-coil inserts are experimentally studied. Flow pattern and slug rise velocity are measured visually with a video camera. The void fraction is measured by the quick-closing valve method. Four kinds of coils with different coil pitches and coil diameters are used as inserts. The presence of wire-coil inserts induces disturbance into gas and liquid flows so that the shape and motion of gas slug or bubbles in a wire-coil inserted tube are quite different from those observed in a smooth tube without insert. The bubbly flow occurs in the low gas superficial velocity region in the wire-coil inserted tube, while the slug or churn/annular flow only appears in the smooth tube without insert over the all test range. The measured slug rise velocity in the wire-coil inserted tube is higher than that in the smooth tube. With modified mean flow velocity calculated with core area, the slug rise velocity in wire-coil tube inserted is in good agreement with Nicklin's correlation. The void fraction in a wire-coil inserted tube is lower than that in a smooth tube in the range of high gas superficial velocities. By introducing a simple assumption on considering the effective flowing area, the measured void fractions in a wire-coil inserted tube are in relatively good agreement with the predicted result based on the drift flux model proposed by others with the correlation for slug rise velocity given by others when the coil pitch is dense.  相似文献

A fast response, linearized X-ray void measurement system has been used to obtain statistical measurements in normally fluctuating air-water flow in a rectangular channel. It is demonstrated that the probability density function (PDF) of the fluctuations in void fraction may be used as an objective and quantitative flow pattern discriminator for the three dominant patterns of bubbly, slug, and annular flow. This concept is applied to data over the range of 0.0 to 37 m/sec mixture velocities to show that slug flow is simply a transitional, periodic time combination of bubbly and annular flows. Film thicknesses calculated from the PDF data are similar in magnitude in both slug and annular flows. Calculation of slug length and residence time ratios along with bubble lengths in slug flow are also readily obtainable from the statistical measurements. Spectral density measurements showed bubbly flow to be stochastic while slug and annular flows showed periodicities correlatable in terms of the liquid volume flux.  相似文献

In this work, co-current flow characteristics of air/non-Newtonian liquid systems in inclined smooth pipes are studied experimentally and theoretically using transparent tubes of 20, 40 and 60 mm in diameter. Each tube includes two 10 m long pipe branches connected by a U-bend that is capable of being inclined to any angle, from a completely horizontal to a fully vertical position. The flow rate of each phase is varied over a wide range. The studied flow phenomena are bubbly flow, stratified flow, plug flow, slug flow, churn flow and annular flow. These are observed and recorded by a high-speed camera over a wide range of operating conditions. The effects of the liquid phase properties, the inclination angle and the pipe diameter on two-phase flow characteristics are systematically studied. The Heywood–Charles model for horizontal flow was modified to accommodate stratified flow in inclined pipes, taking into account the average void fraction and pressure drop of the mixture flow of a gas/non-Newtonian liquid. The pressure drop gradient model of Taitel and Barnea for a gas/Newtonian liquid slug flow was extended to include liquids possessing shear-thinning flow behaviour in inclined pipes. The comparison of the predicted values with the experimental data shows that the models presented here provide a reasonable estimate of the average void fraction and the corresponding pressure drop for the mixture flow of a gas/non-Newtonian liquid.  相似文献

The flow boiling patterns of liquid nitrogen in a vertical mini-tube with an inner diameter of 1.931 mm are visualized with a high-speed digital camera. The superficial gas and liquid velocities are in the ranges of 0.01–26.5 m/s and 0.01–1.2 m/s, respectively. Four typical flow patterns, namely, bubbly, slug, churn and annular flow are observed. Some interesting scenes about the entrainment and liquid droplet deposition in the churn and annular flow, and the flow reversal with the indication of negative pressure drop, are also presented. Based on the visualization, the two-phase flow regime maps are obtained. Compared with the flow regime maps for gas–water flow in tubes with similar hydraulic diameters, the region of slug flow in the present study reduces significantly. Correspondingly, the transition boundary from the bubbly flow to slug flow shifts to higher superficial gas velocity, and that of churn to annular flow moves to lower superficial gas velocity. Moreover, time-averaged void fraction is calculated by quantitative image-digitizing technique and compared with various prediction models. Finally, three kinds of oscillations with long-period and large-amplitude are found, possible explanation for the oscillations is given by comparing the instantaneous flow images with the data of pressure, mass flux and temperature recorded synchronously.  相似文献

A first experimental study on two-phase flow patterns at a long-term, steady microgravity condition was conducted on board the Russian Space Station “MIR” in August 1999. Carbogal and air are used as the liquid and the gas phase, respectively. Bubble, slug, slug-annular transitional, and annular flows are observed. A new region of annular flow with lower liquid superficial velocity is discovered, and the region of the slug-annular transitional flow is wider than that observed by experiments on board the parabolic aircraft. The main patterns are bubble, slug-annular transitional and annular flows based on the experiments on board MIR space station. Some influences on the two-phase flow patterns in the present experiments are discussed. In well construction, there are an increasing number of scenarios in which plugs are being set in annular geometries, whether as cement plugs or simply in the form of chemical packers. The generic reason for setting of such plugs is to hydraulically isolate different regions of a wellbore (or hole). An interesting practical problem in such situations is to predict the rheological properties that are necessary to prevent the annular plug fluid from flowing under the action of buoyancy, or indeed to predict how far the plug material may flow for given rheological properties. The answers to these questions provide valuable information for operational design. Mathematically, these flows are modeled using a Hele-Shaw style approximation of the narrow annulus. Since fluids used in the wellbore are non-Newtonian, typically shear-thinning and with a yield stress, the relationship between the local modified pressure gradient and the gap-averaged velocity field is nonlinear. If the yield stress of the fluids is sufficiently large, relative to the applied pressure over the gap, there is no flow. In the porous media context, there is direct analogy with problems of nonlinear seepage and in particular with non-Darcy flows with limiting pressure gradient. The study of such flows was both pioneered and developed by V.M. Entov, to whose memory this paper is dedicated.  相似文献

This paper proposes a new method for equal quality distribution of gas–liquid two-phase flow by partial separate-phase distribution with a dual-header distributor. The upper and liquid (lower) headers are interconnected with five vertical downward arms. A gas–liquid two-phase mixture enters the distributor from the upper header where most of the liquid of the mixture is removed through the downward arms into the liquid header. Hence, firstly, the remaining gas-rich fluid can be uniformly distributed into the outlet branches, and then secondly, the liquid collected in the liquid header can be uniformly re-distributed into the individual outlet branches. Because both distribution processes are conducted in the condition of single or near single-phase flow, mal-distribution of the two-phase flow is essentially eliminated, and a satisfactory equal quality distribution of gas–liquid two-phase flow is reached. Experiments were conducted in an air–water two-phase flow test loop. The inner diameter of the inlet pipe was 60 mm, the superficial velocity ranges of gas and liquid were 3–32 m/s and 0.02–0.17 m/s respectively, and the quality ranged from 0.02 to 0.44. The flow pattern in the inlet pipe included stratified flow, wavy stratified, slug flow, and annular flow. The experimental results showed that this new method could significantly improve the distribution performance of the two-phase flow. The maximum quality deviation between each outlet branch and the inlet pipe is less than ±1% under the conditions of stratified, wavy stratified and slug flows in the upper header, and less than ±5% in annular flow.  相似文献

Two-phase flow measurements were carried out using a resistive void fraction meter coupled to a venturi or orifice plate. The measurement system used to estimate the liquid and gas mass flow rates was evaluated using an air–water experimental facility. Experiments included upward vertical and horizontal flow, annular, bubbly, churn and slug patterns, void fraction ranging from 2% to 85%, water flow rate up to 4000 kg/h, air flow rate up to 50 kg/h, and quality up to almost 10%. The fractional root mean square (RMS) deviation of the two-phase mass flow rate in upward vertical flow through a venturi plate is 6.8% using the correlation of Chisholm (D. Chisholm, Pressure gradients during the flow of incompressible two-phase mixtures through pipes, venturis and orifice plates, British Chemical Engineering 12 (9) (1967) 454–457). For the orifice plate, the RMS deviation of the vertical flow is 5.5% using the correlation of Zhang et al. (H.J. Zhang, W.T. Yue, Z.Y. Huang, Investigation of oil–air two-phase mass flow rate measurement using venturi and void fraction sensor, Journal of Zhejiang University Science 6A (6) (2005) 601–606). The results show that the flow direction has no significant influence on the meters in relation to the pressure drop in the experimental operation range. Quality and slip ratio analyses were also performed. The results show a mean slip ratio lower than 1.1, when bubbly and slug flow patterns are encountered for mean void fractions lower than 70%.  相似文献

This paper presents experimental investigations on nitrogen/non-Newtonian fluid two-phase flow in vertical noncircular microchannels, which have square or triangular cross-section with the hydraulic diameters being Dh = 2.5, 2.886 and 0.866 mm, respectively, by visualization method. Three non-Newtonian aqueous solutions with typical rheological properties, i.e., 0.4% carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), 0.2% polyacrylamide (PAM) and 0.2% xanthan gum (XG) are chosen as the working fluids. The common flow patterns are identified as slug flow, churn flow and annular flow. The dispersed bubble flow is only found in the case with nitrogen/CMC solution two-phase flow in the largest channel. A new flow pattern of nitrogen/PAM solution two-phase flow, named chained bubble/slug flow, is observed in all the test channels. The flow regime maps are also developed and the results show that the rheological properties of the non-Newtonian fluid have remarkable influence on the flow pattern transitions. The geometrical factors of the microchannel such as the cross-section shape and hydraulic diameter of the channel can also affect the flow regime map. Finally, the results obtained in this work are compared with the available flow pattern transitions.  相似文献

During drilling of oil and gas wells, drilling muds (a suspension of clay particles in water) are pumped into them. During drilling, the muds perform various functions: They free the borehole from fragments of drilled rock, carry them to the surface, and create pressure on the borehole walls to prevent the entry of oil and gas into the borehole. The solid particles of the mud are deposited on the borehole walls, forming a clay crust, and the liquid phase percolates into the permeable bed. The clay crust represents an inhomogeneous deformable porous medium that is denser near the borehole wall. Knowledge of the properties of clay crusts is very important in practice, since it permits determining certain parameters of the bed; furthermore, the very properties of the clay crust depend on the properties of the drilling muds. In this article we will consider percolation of the drilling mud through the crust. Experimental data are used which show that the permeability and compressibility of the clay crust depend on the stresses acting in the particles of the clay crust. The problem is reduced to a self-similar problem. An ordinary differential equation of the second order is derived for the function in terms of which the stress and other characteristics of the crust are expressed. The distributions of permeability and porosity over the thickness of the crust are found and the quantity of fluid that penetrated into the bed at each instant is also determined.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 6, pp. 70–75, November–December, 1976.  相似文献

The flow of non-Newtonian fluids in annular geometries is an important problem, especially for the extrusion of polymeric melts and suspensions and for oil and gas exploration. Here, an analytical solution of the equation of motion for the axial flow of an incompressible viscoplastic fluid (represented by the Hershel–Bulkley equation) in a long concentric annulus under isothermal, fully developed, and creeping conditions and subject to true or apparent wall slip is provided. The simplifications of the analytical model for Hershel–Bulkley fluid subject to wall slip also provide the analytical solutions for the axial annular flows of Bingham plastic, power-law, and Newtonian fluids with and without wall slip at one or both surfaces of the annulus.  相似文献

One of the flow regimes occurring in horizontal two-phase flows is characterized by periodic large waves “surging” along the tube. This flow, called “slug” flow, has been frequently observed in low and high pressure gas liquid systems, but it has been noticed that slugging is absent in certain liquid-liquid two-phase systems. A method is developed giving the necessary conditions for the presence of slug flow. This method quantitatively explains the observed absence of slugging in certain liquid-liquid flows.  相似文献

This paper presents experimental counter-current air–water flow data on the onset of flooding and slugging, the slug propagation velocity, the predominant slug frequency and the average void fraction collected by using different size orifices installed at two locations in a horizontal pipe. For the flow conditions covered during these experiments, it was observed that there is no significant difference between the onset of flooding and the onset of slugging when an orifice is installed in the horizontal run. However, a difference was observed for the experiments carried out without orifices. Furthermore, the position of the orifice with respect to the elbow does not affect the onset of flooding and slugging. When an orifice is installed in the horizontal run, it was observed that slugs occur due to the mutual interaction (constructive interference) of two waves traveling in opposite directions. This means that a completely different mechanism seems to govern the formation of slugs in counter-current two-phase flows in horizontal partially blocked pipes. This is in contrast to that described for the slugging phenomena in co-current flow, where wave instability seems to be the principal mechanisms responsible of bridging the pipe. The mutual interaction of waves traveling in opposite directions seems to control the behaviour of the slug propagation velocity, the slug frequency and average void fraction with increasing the gas superficial velocity.  相似文献

Experimental work on two-phase vertical upward flow was carried out using a 19 mm internal diameter, 7 m long pipe and studying the time series of cross-sectional average void fractions and pressure gradient which were obtained simultaneously. With the aid of a bank of published data in which the pipe diameter is the range from 0.5 to 70 mm, the effect of pipe diameter on flow characteristics of two-phase flow is investigated from various aspects. Particularly, the work focuses on the periodic structures of two-phase flow. Average film thicknesses and the gas flow rate where slug/churn and churn/annular flow transitions occur all increase as the diameter of the pipe becomes larger. On the other hand, the pressure gradients, the frequencies of the periodic structures and the velocities of disturbance waves decrease. The velocity of disturbance waves has been used to test the model of Pearce (1979). It is found that the suggested value of Pearce coefficient 0.8 is reasonable for lower liquid flow rates but becomes insufficient for higher liquid flow rates.  相似文献

Study of two-phase flows in reduced gravity using ground based experiments   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Experimental studies have been carried out to support the development of a framework of the two-fluid model along with an interfacial area transport equation applicable to reduced gravity two-phase flows. The experimental study simulates the reduced gravity condition in ground based facilities by using two immiscible liquids of similar density namely, water as the continuous phase and Therminol 59® as the dispersed phase. We have acquired a total of eleven data sets in the bubbly flow and bubbly to slug flow transition regimes. These flow conditions have area-averaged void (volume) fractions ranging from 3 to 30% and channel Reynolds number for the continuous phase between 2,900 and 8,800. Flow visualization has been performed and a flow regime map developed which is compared with relevant bubbly to slug flow regime transition criteria. The comparison shows that the transition boundary is well predicted by the criterion based on critical void fraction. The value of the critical void fraction at transition was experimentally determined to be approximately 25%. In addition, important two-phase flow local parameters, including the void fraction, interfacial area concentration, droplet number frequency and droplet velocity, have been acquired at two axial locations using state-of-the-art multi-sensor conductivity probe. The radial profiles and axial development of the two-phase flow parameters show that the coalescence mechanism is enhanced by either increasing the continuous or dispersed phase Reynolds number. Evidence of turbulence induced particle interaction mechanism is highlighted. The data presented in this paper clearly show the marked differences in terms of bubble (droplet) size, phase distribution and phase interaction in two-phase flow between normal and reduced gravity conditions.  相似文献

This research is aimed at studying the two-phase flow pattern of a top heat mode closed loop oscillating heat pipe with check valves. The working fluids used are ethanol and R141b and R11 coolants with a filling ratio of 50% of the total volume. It is found that the maximum heat flux occurs for the R11 coolant used as the working fluid in the case with the inner diameter of 1.8 mm, inclination angle of ?90?, evaporator temperature of 125?C, and evaporator length of 50 mm. The internal flow patterns are found to be slug flow/disperse bubble flow/annular flow, slug flow/disperse bubble flow/churn flow, slug flow/bubble flow/annular flow, slug flow/disperse bubble flow, bubble flow/annular flow, and slug flow/annular flow.  相似文献

An optical measurement method for two-phase flow pattern characterization in microtubes has been utilized to determine the frequency of bubbles generated in a microevaporator, the coalescence rates of these bubbles and their length distribution as well as their mean velocity. The tests were run in a 0.5 mm glass channel using saturated R-134a at 30 °C (7.7 bar). The optical technique uses two laser diodes and photodiodes to measure these parameters and to also identify the flow regimes and their transitions. Four flow patterns (bubbly flow, slug flow, semi-annular flow and annular flow) with their transitions were detected and observed also by high speed video. It was also possible to characterize bubble coalescence rates, which were observed here to be an important phenomena controlling the flow pattern transition in microchannels. Two types of coalescence occurred depending on the presence of small bubbles or not. The two-phase flow pattern transitions observed did not compare well to a leading macroscale flow map for refrigerants nor to a microscale map for air–water flows. Time averaged cross-sectional void fractions were also calculated indirectly from the mean two-phase vapor velocities and compared reasonably well to homogeneous values.
