Clay/poly(glycidyl methacrylate) nanocomposites (clay/PGMA) were prepared by in situ radical photopolymerization using N,N‐dimethylaminopropyltrimethoxysilane(DMA)‐modified bentonite clay acting as hydrogen donor for benzophenone in solution. This initiating system permits to photopolymerize glycidyl methacrylate between the lamellae of the DMA‐modified clay. The approach provides exfoliated nanocomposites as judged by the measurements of X‐ray diffraction. However, a low fraction of persistent intercalated clay regions was visible by transmission electron microscopy. X‐ray photoelectron spectra analyses indicate that the nanocomposites have PGMA‐rich surface. The clay/PGMA nanocomposites can be readily dispersed in ethanol. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Herein, we investigate the influence of spacer length on the homoassociation and heteroassociation of end‐functionalized hydrogen‐bonding polymers based on poly(n‐butyl acrylate). Two monofunctional ureido‐pyrimidinone (UPy) end‐functionalized polymers were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization using self‐complementary UPy‐functional initiators that differ in the spacer length between the multiple‐hydrogen‐bonding group and the chain initiation site. The self‐complementary binding strength (Kdim) of these end‐functionalized polymers was shown to depend critically on the spacer length as evident from 1H NMR and diffusion‐ordered spectroscopy. In addition, the heteroassociation strength of the end‐functionalized UPy polymers with end‐functionalized polymers containing the complementary 2,7‐diamido‐1,8‐naphthyridine (NaPy) hydrogen‐bond motif is also affected when the aliphatic spacer length is too short. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The preparation and properties of poly(1‐butene) (PB)/clay nanocomposites are described for the first time. Nanocomposites were prepared with the melt‐intercalation technique, using organically modified clay. The X‐ray diffraction patterns portrayed well‐defined diffraction peaks at higher d‐spacing than pristine clay, confirming the intercalation of polymer in silicate layers. Because PB exhibits time‐dependent polymorphism, the effect of clay on the phase transformation of PB was examined with thermal analysis. The phase transformation from a metastable tetragonal form to a stable hexagonal form was enhanced because of incorporation of layered silicates in the polymer matrix. The nanocomposites exhibited about a 40–140% increase in storage modulus depending on the clay content and significantly lower coefficient of thermal expansion. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Isobutylene isoprene rubber (IIR)‐clay nanocomposites have been prepared successfully by melt intercalation with maleic anhydride‐grafted IIR (Ma‐g‐IIR) and organophilic clay. In IIR‐clay nanocomposites, the silicate layers of the clay were exfoliated and dispersed into the monolayer. The nanocomposites exhibited greater gas barrier properties compared with those of Ma‐g‐IIR. When 15 phr clay was added, gas barrier properties were 2.5 times greater than those of Ma‐g‐IIR. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 1182–1188, 2006  相似文献

Exfoliated nylon‐11/layered silicate nanocomposites were prepared via in situ polymerization by dispersing organoclay in 11‐aminoundecanoic acid monomer. The original clay was modified by a novel method with 11‐aminoundecanoic acid. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results show that stronger hydrogen bonds exist between nylon‐11 and organoclay than that of between nylon‐11 and original clay. The linear dynamic viscoelasticity of organoclay nanocomposites was investigated. Before taking rheological measurements, the exfoliated and intercalating structures and the thermal properties were characterized using X‐ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. The results show that the clay was uniformly distributed in nylon‐11 matrix during in situ polymerization of clay with 4 wt % or less. The presence of clay in nylon‐11 matrix increased the crystallization temperature and the thermal stability of nanocomposites prepared. Rheological properties such as storage modulus, loss modulus, and relative viscosity have close relationship with the dispersion favorably compatible with the organically modified clay. Comparing with neat nylon‐11, the nanocomposites show much higher dynamic modulus and stronger shear thinning behavior. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To have a better insight into the effect of interaction between polymer matrix and clay on the properties of nanocomposite, poly(methyl methacrylate)/clay nanocomposites were prepared by a heterocoagulation method. Using a reactive cationic emulsifier, methacryloyloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (METAC), a strong polymer–clay interaction was obtained with the advantage of keeping a consistent polymer matrix property. X‐ray diffraction and transmission electronic microscopy indicated an exfoliated structure in nanocomposites. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the nanocomposites was measured by DSC and DMA. The DMA results showed that with a strong interaction, PMMA–METAC nanocomposite showed a 20 °C enhancement in glass transition temperature (Tg), whereas a slight increase in Tg was observed for PMMA–cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)/clay nanocomposite with a weak interaction. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The feasibility of constructing polymer/clay nanocomposites with polypeptides as the matrix material is shown. Cationic poly‐L‐lysine · HBr (PLL) was reinforced by sodium montmorillonite clay. The PLL/clay nanocomposites were made via the solution‐intercalation film‐casting technique. X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy data indicated that montmorillonite layers intercalated with PLL chains coexist with exfoliated layers over a wide range of relative PLL/clay compositions. Differential scanning calorimetry suggests that the presence of clay suppresses crystal formation in PLL relative to the neat polypeptide and slightly decreases the PLL melting temperature. Despite lower crystallinity, dynamic mechanical analysis revealed a significant increase in the storage modulus of PLL with an increase in clay loading producing storage modulus magnitudes on par with traditional engineering thermoplastics. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(cyclohexene oxide) (PCHO)/clay nanocomposites were prepared by in situ photoinitiated activated monomer cationic polymerization. The polymerization of cyclohexene oxide through the interlayer galleries of the clay can provide distribution of the clay layers in the polymer matrix homogenously and results in the formation of PCHO/clay nanocomposites. The exfoliated structures were characterized by X‐ray diffraction spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(styrene‐co‐butyl acrylate) copolymers were prepared by free‐radical random copolymerization of styrene and butyl acrylate in emulsion in the presence of 10% of surface‐modified sodium montmorillonite (Na‐MMT). The objective of this work was to evaluate the impact of the clay organic modifier in terms of its chemical structure, its degree of interaction within the clay galleries surface, and its ability to copolymerize with monomers, on the morphology and properties of the final nanocomposite prepared. Na‐MMT was modified using different organic modifiers, namely: sodium 1‐allyloxy‐2‐hydroxypropyl (Cops), 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methyl‐1‐propanesulfonic acid (AMPS), N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPA), and sodium 11‐methacryloyloxy‐undecan‐1‐yl sulfate (MET), respectively. The morphology and properties of the nanocomposites obtained were found to be dependant on the clay organic modifier. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy indicated that, nanocomposites at 10% clay loading with Cops‐, NIPA‐, and MET‐modified clays, yielded intercalated to partially exfoliated structures, whereas AMPS‐modified clay gave a nanocomposite with a fully exfoliated structure. All polymer–clay nanocomposites were found to be more thermally stable than neat poly(S‐co‐BA) as were determined by TGA. However, nanocomposites with intercalated structures exhibited greater thermal stability relative to fully exfoliated ones. Furthermore, nanocomposites with exfoliated structures exhibited higher storage moduli (GI) than partially exfoliated once, whereas intercalated structure showed the lowest GI values. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Exfoliated montmorillonite (MMT)/poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) and MMT/poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐co‐acrylamide) [P(NIPAAm‐co‐AAm)] nanocomposites were fabricated by soap‐free emulsion polymerization. Interestingly, as the content of MMT was increased from 0 to 10 wt %, the glass transition temperature of MMT/PNIPAAm was decreased from 145 to 122 °C, whereas that of the MMT/P(NIPAAm‐co‐AAm) increased from 95 to 153 °C. Although the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of 32 °C for the MMT/PNIPAAm nanocomposites in aqueous solutions was slightly increased with the content of MMT, that of the MMT/P(NIPAAm‐co‐AAm) was decreased from 70 to 65 °C. A mechanism that the hydrogen bonds between the amide groups of PNIPAAm were interfered by the exfoliated MMT nano‐platelets for the MMT/PNIPAAm nanocomposites and the preferred absorption of acrylamide units to the MMT nanoplatelets rather than N‐isopropylacrylamide in the MMT/P(NIPAAm‐co‐AAm) nanocomposites was suggested to interpret these unusual transition behavior. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The fabrication of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS)/organoclay nanocomposite was conducted via a stepwise mixing process with poly(styrene‐co‐vinyloxazolin) (OPS), that is, melt intercalation of OPS into organoclay followed by blending with sPS. The microstructure of nanocomposite mainly depended on the arrangement type of the organic modifier in clay gallery. When organoclays that have a lateral bilayer arrangement were used, an exfoliated structure was obtained, whereas an intercalated structure was obtained when organoclay with a paraffinic monolayer arrangement were used. The thermal and mechanical properties of sPS nanocomposites were investigated in relation to their microstructures. From the thermograms of nonisothermal crystallization and melting, nanocomposites exhibited an enhanced overall crystallization rate but had less reduced crystallinity than a matrix polymer. Clay layers dispersed in a matrix polymer may serve as a nucleating agent and hinder the crystal growth of polymer chains. As a comparison of the two nanocomposites with different microstructures, because of the high degree of dispersion of its clay layer the exfoliated nanocomposite exhibited a faster crystallization rate and a lower degree of crystallinity than the intercalated one. Nanocomposites exhibited higher mechanical properties, such as strength and stiffness, than the matrix polymer as observed in the dynamic mechanical analysis and tensile tests. Exfoliated nanocomposites showed more enhanced mechanical properties than intercalated ones because of the uniformly dispersed clay layers. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Exfoliated poly(dicyclopentadiene) (pDCPD)—montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites were synthesized via intergallery‐surface‐initiated ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). This is the first example of in situ polymerization of pDCPD from clay intergallery surfaces using ROMP. Grubbs catalyst was immobilized on the surface of MMT clay modified with vinylbenzyl dimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride (VOAC), and DCPD polymerized from the clay surface while simultaneously crosslinking to form a thermoset nanocomposite in a one‐pot reaction. X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analysis indicated that the resultant nanocomposites exhibited exfoliated morphologies with heterogeneous clay platelet distribution. Conventional bulk‐initiated nanocomposites containing VOAC modified MMT were also synthesized as a comparison, and these resulted in nanocomposites with intercalated morphologies. The differences between the morphologies demonstrated that growing polymer chains from the initiator sites on the intergallery surface of the clay platelets pushed the platelets apart during the polymerization of the intergallery‐surface‐initiated nanocomposites, aiding in the exfoliation process. Compression testing indicated that the intergallery‐surface‐initiated nanocomposites led to improvements of up to 50% in the compressive Young's Modulus, while the bulk‐initiated nanocomposites at the same clay loadings did not exhibit improved properties. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The polyamide‐6 (PA6)/natural clay mineral nanocomposites were successfully prepared by solid‐state shear milling method without any treatment of clay mineral and additives. PA6/clay mixture was pan‐milled to produce PA6/clay compounding powder, using pan‐mill equipment. The obtained powder as master batch was diluted with neat PA6 to prepare composites by a twin‐screw extruder. The clay silicate layers were found to be partially exfoliated and dispersed homogeneously at nanometer level in PA6 matrix. The rheological measurements and mechanical properties of nanocomposites were characterized. The shear viscosities of nanocomposites were higher than that of pure PA6, and tensile strength and tensile modulus increased, but Izod impact strength decreased, with increasing concentration of clay. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. X‐ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) methods have been used to investigate the crystallization behavior and crystalline structure of hexamethylenediamine (HMDA)‐modified maleic‐anhydride‐grafted polypropylene/clay (PP‐g‐MA/clay) nanocomposites. These nanocomposites have been prepared by using HMDA to graft the PP‐g‐MA (designated as PP‐g‐HMA) and then mixing the PP‐g‐HMA polymer in hot xylene solution, with the organically modified montmorillonite. Both X‐ray diffraction data and transmission electron microscopy images of PP‐g‐HMA/clay nanocomposites indicate that most of the swellable silicate layers are exfoliated and randomly dispersed into PP‐g‐HMA matrix. DSC isothermal results revealed that introducing 5 wt % of clay into the PP‐g‐HMA structure causes strongly heterogeneous nucleation, which induced a change of the crystal growth process from a three‐dimensional crystal growth to a two‐dimensional spherulitic growth. Mechanical properties of PP‐g‐HMA/clay nanocomposites performed by dynamic mechanical analysis show significant improvements in the storage modulus when compared to neat PP‐g‐HMA. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Supramolecular polymers based on ureido‐pyrimidinone (UPy) represent a promising class of biocompatible materials for medical applications. Here, the chemical modification effect of UV irradiation, used to sterilize these materials, is studied. Besides anticipated crosslinking effects, UV irradiation causes telechelic UPy‐polymers to become fluorescent. UPy‐model compounds confirm a relation between UV‐induced changes and the UPy‐moiety. UV‐induced fluorescence and IR‐spectral changes are (partially) reversible by heat and/or solvent treatment. The results indicate the presence of at least two distinct UV‐induced molecular species. UPy‐model compounds with specific tautomeric forms directly relate fluorescence to UPy‐enol tautomers. Photo‐enolization is hypothesized to occur via an excited‐state intermolecular double proton transfer. Changes in UPy‐tautomeric equilibrium and crosslinking are factors that influence the dynamics of UPy‐based materials. Identification and understanding of such factors will aid in the successful application of these materials, for example as biomaterial in tissue engineering applications. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Even though nanocomposites have provided a plethora of routes to increase stiffness and strength, achieving increased toughness with suppressed catastrophic crack growth has remained more challenging. Inspired by the concepts of mechanically excellent natural nanomaterials, one‐component nanocomposites were fabricated involving reinforcing colloidal nanorod cores with polymeric grafts containing supramolecular binding units. The concept is based on mechanically strong native cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) grafted with glassy polymethacrylate polymers, with side chains that contain 2‐ureido‐4[1H]‐pyrimidone (UPy) pendant groups. The interdigitation of the grafts and the ensuing UPy hydrogen bonds bind the nanocomposite network together. Under stress, UPy groups act as sacrificial bonds: simultaneously providing adhesion between the CNCs while allowing them to first orient and then gradually slide past each other, thus dissipating fracture energy. We propose that this architecture involving supramolecular binding units within side chains of polymer grafts attached to colloidal reinforcements opens generic approaches for tough nanocomposites.  相似文献

Synthesis of poly(styrene‐block‐tetrahydrofuran) (PSt‐b‐PTHF) block copolymer on the surfaces of intercalated and exfoliated silicate (clay) layers by mechanistic transformation was described. First, the polystyrene/montmorillonite (PSt/MMT) nanocomposite was synthesized by in situ atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) from initiator moieties immobilized within the silicate galleries of the clay particles. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis showed the existence of both intercalated and exfoliated structures in the nanocomposite. Then, the PSt‐b‐PTHF/MMT nanocomposite was prepared by mechanistic transformation from ATRP to cationic ring opening polymerization (CROP). The TGA thermogram of the PSt‐b‐PTHF/MMT nanocomposite has two decomposition stages corresponding to PTHF and PSt segments. All nanocomposites exhibit enhanced thermal stabilities compared with the virgin polymer segments. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 47: 2190–2197, 2009  相似文献

Transparent poly(ethyl acrylate) (PEA)/bentonite nanocomposites containing intercalated–exfoliated combinatory structures of clay were synthesized by in situ emulsion polymerizations in aqueous dispersions containing bentonite. The samples for characterization were prepared through direct‐forming films of the resulting emulsions without coagulation and separation. An examination with X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy showed that intercalated and exfoliated structures of clay coexisted in the PEA/bentonite nanocomposites. The measurements of mechanical properties showed that PEA properties were greatly improved, with the tensile strength and modulus increasing from 0.65 and 0.24 to 11.16 and 88.41 MPa, respectively. Dynamic mechanical analysis revealed a very marked improvement of the storage modulus above the glass‐transition temperature. In addition, because of the uniform dispersion of silicate layers in the PEA matrix, the barrier properties of the materials were dramatically improved. The permeability coefficient of water vapor decreased from 30.8 × 10?6 to 8.3 × 10?6 g cm/cm2 s cmHg. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 40: 1706–1711, 2002  相似文献

A series of A3‐type star poly(methylmethacrylate)/clay nanocomposites is prepared by in situ atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiated from organomodified montmorillonite containing quaternary trifunctional ATRP initiator. The first order kinetic plot shows a linear behavior, indicating the controlled character of the polymerization. The resulting nanocomposites are characterized by spectroscopic (XRD), thermal (DSC and TGA), and microscopic (TEM) analyses. The exfoliated nanocomposite has been obtained when polymerization was conducted with 1% of organic clay loading. Thermal analyses show that all nanocomposites have higher glass transition values and thermal stabilities compared to neat polymer. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Nanocomposites based on sequential semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (semi‐IPN) of cross‐linked polyurethane and linear poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) with 0.25 and 3 wt % of nanosilica filler were prepared and investigated. The unmodified silica, carboxyl‐modified, and amino‐modified silica were used in an attempt to control the microphase separation of the polymer matrix by polymer–filler interactions. A variety of experimental techniques were used to study morphology, thermal transitions, mechanical properties, and polymer dynamics of the nanocomposites. Special attention was paid to the investigation of the hydration properties of the nanocomposites in the perspective of biomedical applications. The results show that the good hydration properties of the semi‐IPN matrix are preserved in the nanocomposites. Effects of water on polymer dynamics were found to be particularly pronounced for the secondary βsw,PHEMA and the βPU relaxations, in agreement with interpretations in terms of hydrogen bonding interactions with specific groups in the structure of the two polymers. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
